Wikimedia Indigenous Languages

[edit]

Good day, I thought that you might be interested by the creation of Wikimedia Indigenous Languages, an international body for the promotion and support for the development of Wikimedia projects in small and endangered languages. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 05:18, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I am interested so I added my name in the list. Thanks for notifying! :-) — T. 08:00, 28 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

IP block

[edit]

Hello Tanvir, the IP I'm currently writing from is blocked on Wikipedia. This makes sense since I'm at my school at the moment and I can imagine that there was quite a lot of vandalism in the past as every student has a laptop and has nothing better to do during class... However, until today it was possible to contribute with a registered user name, mine being Christallkeks in the German and English Wikipedias as well as Commons. But since today I even get the "block message" when I'm logged in. Could you please enable me to contribute? Thank you.

Details that may be required: IP 202.45.119.27 - Start of blocking 10:48, 3. Sep. 2012 - Supposed end of blocking 20121203004851. -- Christallkeks unfortunately writing as -- 202.45.119.27 23:12, 9 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

What is your registered account's name? Do you have a global account? If so we can give your account an exemption to this block.--Jasper Deng (talk) 00:12, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Now I'm at home, so it's a different IP address... Its name is Christallkeks, as mentioned above. I don't have a Meta account and I'm also not completely sure wether I have a global account or not... When I log in at the German WP, it gives me this You were also logged in to these related services message. I created my account in the German WP on 7 May 2010. My username was changed in September - see here. All the accounts I use are linked in the initial post. I hope this information helps! -- 27.32.193.69 02:04, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is helpful (sorry for missing your username in your first comment). If you login to the German Wikipedia you should be logged in to Meta too... in any case, that means we are able to give you an exemption.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:09, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
No worries, I chose the link titles unwisely... I'm currently logged in to the German and English Wikipedias, but at Meta it still shows me "Create Account - Log in" in the top right corner... And when I try to log in as Christallkeks it says that this user doesn't exist on Meta. Weird. Thanks for the exemption, I'll try it tomorrow. :-) -- 27.32.193.69 02:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oops, I should've looked harder; you need to first merge your existing accounts; I'm not a steward and cannot grant you an exemption (only a steward like Wikitanvir can do so), and you'll need to merge your accounts first.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:50, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough ;-) I successsfully unified my accounts so that I can get this exemption. And by the way that solved the Meta issue! :-) Thanks for your advise -- Christallkeks (talk) 04:29, 10 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Nice to see you people sorted out. Thanks a lot Jasper! — T. 15:54, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Translation administrator flag

[edit]

Hello, I see that you have translation administrator flag but apparently never used it; if I'm mistaken, forgive me and consider the rest of the message for what it's worth. The current wording of the policy says «Meta administrators are able to add (and remove) themselves to the group if they are willing to help other users or need it», so you can add it to yourself at any time; but you may consider removing it for now. This would also help users willing to contact translation admins, making it easier. While I'm at it: please watchlist Meta:Babylon if you have not yet. Thanks, Nemo 11:29, 31 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Happy Bengali New Year

[edit]

I am still enjoying the memories of the insight you gave me into Bengali culture and the kindness you shared in introducing me to your city. Thank you for giving me these things. I believe that Bengali perspective is underrepresented in international discussion and that the world is harmed for being cut off from the culmination of centuries of tradition from a deeply introspective and creative society. I believe in your dream to share what Bangladesh has to offer with the rest of the world and likewise to join those taking Bangladesh itself into a brighter future by increasing access to educational and informational resources. I very much want to see you find success in everything that you try, because I feel that your success is tied to the success of many other good people.

I apologize for falling out of touch. Happy Bengali New Year and may you accomplish what you intend at the Wikimedia Conference in Milan. Let's chat soon. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:59, 15 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Uklanjanje bot zastavice / Removal of bot flag

[edit]

(English) I want to inform you that on bs.wiki there has been a voting that resulted in accepting the removal of bot flags for inactive and/or interwiki bots. Your bot has been identified to meet at least one of these criteria. This decision has been made due to the new developments with Wikidata by which all interwiki bots have become unnecessary. If you want to keep your bot flag, then please report that here by indicating what new task your bot will be performing and how this will be done. Note however that this has to be a concrete and useful task for the community before it will be accepted. If you have any questions, please let me know on my talk page. In case of no response, the removal of the bot flag will be performed within a few weeks from now. However, after that period you are always welcome to file a new request for a bot flag.

-- Edin(r) 01:23, 27 april 2013 (CEST)

Thank you for letting me know. It's a good decision!
My bot will not longer be active to edit inter-wiki links, so no point to keep the flag in this purpose. — T. 05:15, 28 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

LGBT Wikimedians User Group

[edit]

There has been some discussion on the Wikimedia LGBT talk page re: the creation of LGBT Wikimedians User Group. The project has not done a great amount of outreach, but I believe there is enough interest to apply for user group recognition. Furthermore, I believe that we could recruit many other supporters with a planned interwiki outreach effort. Do you have any thoughts, or might you be able to provide detail about some of the next steps that need to be taken? Thank you for any assistance. --Another Believer (talk) 15:10, 23 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please see Wikimedia LGBT/Participants. I added names from the Proposed Board list to the general list of project participants/supporters, in the order in which they added their name to the Board list (based on time stamps, when possible). Your name is included as an Advisor. If you are able to include yourself as a project supporter, would you mind signing the general list as well? (If your role is strictly AffCom-related and signing as a supporter is a COI for some reason, I understand.) Thanks. --Another Believer (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

StewardBot

[edit]

Hi Tanvir. Did you hear about the problem with stewardbot? PiRSquared17 (talk) 06:06, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not really. What's the problem? — T. 07:48, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
You should be using prepared SQL statements. It is quite easy to do SQL injection, e.g. @stew info MF-Warburg";DROP_TABLE_stewards;--. Even if you just do @stew info Barras", it will stop responding to all replies and must be restarted. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:55, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, @stew info is relatively safe, as it uses query() not modquery(), but some of the other commands are not, and it is still possible to crash the bot using query(). PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:29, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Congrats for posting this publicly. --MF-W 21:31, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's not like you can do much damage without committing, which query() doesn't do. Only stewards have access to modquery commands. The worst that could happen is someone breaks the bot and needs to restart it. Not a big deal imo, but should be fixed. PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:15, 26 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Translate some names for hundreds software projects including MediaWiki

[edit]

Hello, I'm writing you because you subscribed to a Language support team. As you know, Wikimedia projects exist in almost 300 languages; supporting them all is a big effort so we partner with other organisations. One small but visible thing we miss is that many interwiki links in sidebar (among others) don't offer a translation of the language name when hovered. We're now able to translate 100 more language names in your language.

If you're interested, I can create you an account to submit translations on the CLDR web tool (within June 14): please send an email to ask one and I'll follow up with instructions. On CLDR you can translate and tweak many other things, if you desire; your work will impact hundreds of software projects. Thanks, Nemo 17:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users

[edit]

Dear Wikitanvir,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee is requesting comments on the approval process and agreements for Wikimedia user groups.

Wikimedia user groups are groups of Wikimedia users who support and promote the Wikimedia projects in the offline world by organizing meetups and other projects. The Wikimedia Affiliations Committee's responsibilities include approval of new Wikimedia user groups.

The committee will seek community input until Friday, May 1, 2015. The committee will then review the community's input, and publish the new process and agreements on Meta-Wiki. The committee will again seek community input approximately six months after any changes are adopted to gauge effectiveness and if any additional changes are necessary.

Please see the RFC page on Meta-Wiki for more information and to provide feedback.

Thank you - Wikimedia Affiliations Committee

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Global bot

[edit]
This message is being left on your talk page at Meta-Wiki and those of your home wiki(s). Sorry for the duplicates.

Dear global bot operator: Some days ago you received a message in which you were informed that one or various accounts you hold lost a global bot flag because of inactivity. Due to a mistake, messages informing about this were not sent before removal took place as policy mandates. As such, if you think your bot will be active again on global bot duties, you can request the restoration of the global bot flag on the stewards' noticeboard at Meta-Wiki within the next two (2) weeks after this message has been posted. Please note that this removal was purely procedural based on inactivity. If you have any questions, you can reach me on my talk page at Meta-Wiki. Please accept my apologies in advance for this. Best regards. -- MediaWiki message delivery (talk) on behalf of MarcoAurelio at 18:11, 2 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

機械人權限撤銷預告/ Notification of pending suspension of bot permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon
According the Bot Policy of Chinese Wikipedia, bot accounts that have had no edits for two years, where the listed operator has also had no edits for two years, will be deauthorized. Prior to deauthorization, the bot will be nominated for review and a one-week notification will be issued. If you wish to have these permissions retained, please post to this page within a week. Re-application of the permissions is needed if you remain inactive for the notice period. Thank you for your past efforts.—J.Wong17:23, 12 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Bot activity on the Dutch Wikipedia

[edit]

Dear,

Your bot account hasn't made any edits on the Dutch Wikipedia for at least three years. In accordance with the local bot policy the bot flag will be removed in three months. To avoid losing the bot flag, you can confirm you want to retain the bot flag by going to this page.

The Affiliate-selected Board seats process welcomes your support

[edit]

Hello. You are receiving this message because you are active in the field of translations <3 The movement needs you! The Nominations phase has started for the ongoing selection process of two Board members, and the timeline is quite tight.

A Translation Central is available to help translators figure out what's been covered and what's left to do. Over the course of the next few weeks, your attention on candidates' profiles is particularly welcome.

While there are four languages that are especially relevant for multiple affiliates (namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish), we are asking your help for Chinese, Ukrainian, Bengali, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Farsi, German, Cantonese, Finnish, Hindi, Thai, Dutch, and Greek, as these also matter to affiliates! If you can't help: please see if you know anyone in your circle who could, and spread the word :) Thank you! Elitre (WMF) and Facilitators of ASBS 2019, 21:35, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Translation help?

[edit]

Hi.

You, and some other users, are getting this message because you've previously translated from English to Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil or Telugu here on Meta. The Community Engagement department at the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to get some information we think is very relevant to the Indian communities translated into these languages. If you have the time and would be willing to help out, please take a look at User:CKoerner (WMF)/Support for our communities across India, which we'll be posting as soon as possible.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF) 11:40, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
