Template:Box-shadow

Please stop your edit warring at Template:Box-shadow. You seem to have a complete lack of understanding about the inner working of the <noiclude> tags, and the wiki parser in general. I know my way around the codebase for MediaWiki and your argument about minimizing linebreaks is complete nonsense. -- [[User:Edokter]] {{talk}} 22:44, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

I do PERFECTLY know what noinclude is. Dojn't even think to challenge me about that. The gact is that this section should still be minimized to the maximum as we don't want anything else there than the documentation (so no categories as well). It is STANDARD to put ONLY that docluemtnation template and nothing else in the noinclude section at end of ALL templates.

YOU absolutely don't understand this standard which explcitely makes inserting anything else there undesirable (notably by bots that are looking for newlines in the last noinclude to insert theur own tags).

YOU are trying to push your OWN standard there. Nobody wants that except you. So: no comments, no blanks, no newlines, ONLY the doc template inclusion; even if for you it looks cleaner.

YOU ignore the fact that EVEN what is is the noinclude will take memory in the parser, EVEN if it won't be part of the generated code. All templates that can be used extensively should be compacted as much as possible, don't just assume that the parser will drop these without any cost, even if it does (but after several intermediate parsing steps). verdy_p (talk) 02:46, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

You should have been blocked for such abusive harassment of me. I did not break anything. I just see that you don't want any discussion about that and absoltely don't want understand the reasons I explained or even read them. : How impolite you are.You have started the war with these lame edits.

You have also sent lied about me or my understanding, visibly you simply do not see the huge work I do here on Meta (even if since a few weeks it is a bit slower), MUCH MUCH MORE THAN YOU here; with many erors from you that I also corrected.

(I contest your unnneeded privileges here on Meta, given that you are abusing by your position with such personal attacks). Wikis do not block users for perfectly valid contributions (well your edits also look valid; but they are not needed and have an additional cost without any benefit).

There are much better admins here with which I cooperate often; ad well as many WMF staffs that want my work here). Meta-Wiki does not belong to you; you just want to apply here your own "preferences".

Your lame edits were NOT needed; not justified at all, there was nothing bad and absolutely no need for you to insert dummy characters in this small template (there are good reasons why we want some simple templates to remain very small. But as you never want to understand that (and the other resons I explained about the behavior of bots and the fact that many people are trying tin insert categories or interwikis in the noinclude section which is strictly enough with the simple inclusion of the doc template and nothing else). verdy_p (talk) 13:28, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

You should know better. When someone reverts your edits, it is your responsibility to gain approval. We've had this discussion before on mediawiki.org, and you were told in very clear terms not to editwar, regardless of how right you think you are. No matter how great of a job you do otherwise (and I do mean that), abusing your editing privileges through edit warring will have consequenses on any project. Now if my edits weren't needed, neither were yours. I do maintain this set of templates across multiple projects, so their code base needs to remain consistent. Exactly, you abused my revert of your edit; "When someone reverts your edits, it is your responsibility to gain approval.", and in this case this exactly applies to your revert of my revert. You've proven here that you know that rule, and chose to ignore it for yourself. In additin your last arguments are non-sense because your edit is inconsistant with all other templates that do not include anything else than the transclusion of the doc page in the final noinclude section !

YOU started the edit war; and did not try to get any approval from anyone else; but YOU chose to abuse your privileges to force it (and also threaten to use it to block someone for illegitimate reasons when someone said to you that your edit was non-sense and not needed); you did not hear anything about what I said and challenged me with FALSE assertions (notably in the comment of your revert of my revert). verdy_p (talk) 06:49, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Verdy p. Your edits to Template:Box-shadow don't look great to me. Typically whitespace is unimportant and this template is no exception. The extenuating circumstances seem to be that Edokter prefers a slightly looser style (I do as well as I learned the <noinclude>\n{{documentation}}\n</noinclude> form) and he's trying to keep this template in sync with others, as I understand it. Given these two factors, I don't see a reason to make the template code more compact. If you feel that the template code must be made more compact, please clearly explain why. Reading your posts here and your edit summaries, I can't discern an actual reason you care about this. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:33, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Reading his posts here, I can't discern any actual reason why he did care about his unneeded change. But it's a fact htat he has lied several times in his arguments.... I gave mine, but the argument for keeping in sync with others is not sufficient when it is also incoherent with many other templates that don't use this unneeded "coding style" (there are different views about this, but this template (and many other small similar templates for formatting) is small enough that we don't need further expansion with dummy characters.

The doc template was created on purpose to avoid exanding the noinclude section and convince everyone to put other metadata in the doc page, not in the template itself. The position of the very short noinclude section at end of the code does not justify adding anything else, it does not make the template code more readable.

And there's no excuse for his FOUR successive reverts by him only (HE is the only one that started the edit war by its second revert). He has abused the standard rights of normal users, and has also abused his privileges here by sending excessive threats to block me when I broke nothing and his "contrib" was completely useless. verdy_p (talk) 16:59, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Urgent template fix

Hello Verdy. I know you are Meta's top expert with translation templates, so I am contacting you for this. Could you please fix {{Sr-elections_2015}}? The statement is not included in English by default, e.g. see here. This is really important, and I will be very grateful if you fix it. Thank you in advance! @PiRSquared17: Ok I've searched and understood the problem. Then I looked at the horrible code of the template and I took the liberty of reformating it to have it more readable and understandable, then I think I've corrected all the issues caused by the confusion between the current user language and the languages of the candidate descriptions (this caused fallbacks to not work properly, the codes were wrong and the template attempted to do its own fallbacks the wrong way.

If you look at the code, it is much cleaner, and easier to translate, and what it generates is correctly tagued with the proper HTML lang tags. In addition it correctly displays the language used in the effective description selected by the fallbacks (but the language name itself is still translated into the user's language and not left native or in English).

I've improved also a bit the rendered layout. If you think it needs more changes and see some defects, I can fix them, but my code is correctly presented so that it will be much easier to update.

Note that I've replaced all tabs by spaces (this causes havocs in text editors, I've setup my external editors so that It will never autoinsert tabs when inserting and indenting new lines, in Notepad++ there's a preference for that).

The performances are very good and the full list of candidates is displayed instantly, the generated HTML page is even more compact than before.

Of ccourse the user language is honored as much as possible, but if this is not the case, the standard fallbacks are used (not necessarily English from all languages) : so if a person's information are translated in the user language, that version is displayed instead of the possible fallbacks . The code also checks the case where there's absolutely no fallback available (this should happen only for languages that have no other fallback than English, but there's still no English translation ; in that case we should display a default language, the original, but we don't have a parameter to say in which language it was initially written if this was not English).

Ideally we should be able to switch the panel displaying the personnal info, like in licence panels on Commons, using a special class for the container, allowing a javascript to switch languages without reloading a page with a different URL or changing the user's language. verdy_p (talk) 11:35, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store. Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

thank you for your work on translations for the Wikimedia movement.

Today I'm requesting translation of the page Free Bassel, which is to be the landing page linked from a CentralNotice banner campaign informing our readers about the dire situation of Bassel Khartabil, a fellow Wikipedia volunteer and open source software developer who might be facing death penalty imposed by the Syrian government.

Please kindly take some time to translate the page; I set 30 November as the deadline for the translation, but really do hope the page might be translated earlier than that, as Bassel's situation really is of the utmost urgency.

I'm seeking your help with this short notification intended for village pumps and other community notification boards to help us figure out what IdeaLab campaigns to run in the future. The message invites participants to meta to discuss campaign topics and participate in the survey, but participants should also feel welcome to discuss their ideas on their local Wikimedia project where this notification will be posted, where I'll be monitoring it.
