Global notifications

[edit]

Lieber Melancholie, sieht fein aus, was Du da machst, ich wollte Dich nur wissen lassen, dass es vermutlich so was Aehnliches bereits gibt naemlich hier, vielleicht könnt Ihr beide Euch ja zusammentun :)

Liebe Gruesze, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:48, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Interwiki bot request

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you run an interwiki bot. Is it possible if your bot can run to tag/modify interwiki links in Wikispecies? OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:43, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Is running now, see species:Wikispecies:Bots/Requests_for_approval#User:MelancholieBot :-) --- Best regards, Melancholie 18:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

User:WikimediaNotifier

[edit]

What will this do that mw:Extension:CentralNotice doesn't? When do you envisage it being run, and where is it going to notify? Conrad.Irwin 21:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

If I see that right, mw:Extension:CentralNotice allows to create a global SiteNotice? Global notifications will be for Betawiki stats updates and other stuff that is interesting for every wiki(community) in a whole. I am preparing the surrounding pages, currently. It should be ready tomorrow. It will notify about important things like that current poll or the fundraiser translation request on all wikis then, see Global notifications. --- Best regards, Melancholie 21:56, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
It will notify where and how exactly? --Brownout(msg) 23:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
The bot will edit within my user namespace (secured by MediaWiki, as *.css/*.js is used). Then the appropriate page/list can be included everywhere you want, in every wiki. Maybe I will make Project:Wikimedia_notifications pages on wikis. --- Best regards, Melancholie 23:32, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
On pdcwiki it made it to this page. One question about the table of content (TOC). If the notifications are integrated through a template the TOC appears on the left and not on the right as on the original page. May you help to change the appearance to the proposed appearance. Thank you for your help and best regards --Marbot 16:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will change that behaviour by removing noinclude tag, thanks :-) --- Best regards, Melancholie 17:42, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Beautiful! Thanks a lot for your help. Best regards --Marbot 21:15, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Global notifications

[edit]

Great work! For almost a year I am thinking about something like this, including very similar technical concept; but I was too lazy to finish it. Maybe I even have some page on Meta where I described it, but I forgot where it is :) (In the mean time, I realized where it is: Wikimedia Postal Service.)--Millosh 09:36, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

So, if it is written in Python, I may join development. Also, I would like to see incorporation of this messaging system with mailing lists and even external web places, like forums and similar are. What are your ideas? --Millosh 09:36, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that kind of tool had been pretty overdue! But it's done with Perl, combined with the PyWikipediaBot framework for the execution part. Coincidently, User:Pathoschild has began to do global edits publicly, too :-) His solutions seem purely based on Python! @Mailing lists etc.: That sounds interesting! To spread the word also an automatic web blog could be created, aggregated by http://en.planet.wikimedia.org/ then for example? @forums: Not sure whether plain web forums would see that as some kind of spam ;-) --- Best regards, Melancholie 18:26, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
P.s.: Maybe it would also be useful to add a "tech" subsection, where people could announce changes/improvements to template and script code. There are templates using ParserFunctions and JavaScript scripts that are improved on one wiki, but all the others still use "obsolete" ones, currently. Not sure how much that would get adopted. It will be even hard enough to get Global notifications properly adopted/used on all wikis. --- Greetings, Melancholie 19:04, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Improve edit summary

[edit]

Hello Melancholie. I got the following message on my talk page about your bot. I pointed the user to this page.

Hi, the WikimediaNotifier currently just writes *** global announcement *** in the edit summary of each new message. Would it be possible to add some more useful information there, eg. the topic/title of the announcement? With such a small change, people could already decide on their watchlist or on recent changes whether they are interested to check out the news more closely. --Latebird 10:14, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pathoschild 18:30:39, 04 November 2008 (UTC)

I already did so for the "Translation of the Week" (yet in script code only). As mostly there will be only one (or two) notification(s) per loop, I think I will do so :-) --- Greetings, Melancholie 18:51, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Here Vinhtantran@vi.wiki again

[edit]

Should I add a link to translated page in vi:User:WikimediaNotifier/translate next to some machine translation links? Vinhtantran 10:46, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that page can be modified to your wishes :-) That's even intended.
You even may write a short introduction/description in your language!? By the way, how good/bad is Google's translation readable in your language? --- Best regards, Melancholie 09:47, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Many newspaper reviewed that Google's Vietnamese translation was very basic, and would make the translation meaningless. I can use Google, but it's painful because I must guess while reading. Vinhtantran 03:23, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Translation of global notification

[edit]

Currently, Global notifications are only released in English. but someone can't understand English. (Using machine-translation is not good idea. auto-translators have poor quality in some language like Korean) I'm willing to translate in Korean. How do you think publishing already-translated version?--Kwj2772 11:01, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

See one section above and Talk:Global_notifications#Wikimedia_notification_system. Maybe I should add a >add your translation page link here< to User:WikimediaNotifier/translation? --- Best regards, Melancholie 00:34, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I added the translated page to ca:User:WikimediaNotifier/translation but it has been reverted. --Vriullop 11:23, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for that! I seem to have checked that page for changes before you edited it. I have reverted it, it will remain now. --- Sorry, Melancholie 11:38, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will create ko:User:WikimediaNotifier/topic because translated version has different sectionname.--Kwj2772 15:31, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
See Talk:Global_notifications#User:WikimediaNotifier.2Ftranslation for that. I am considering to create a help page for that... --- Best regards, Melancholie 15:34, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Most missed articles on pl.wikt

[edit]

Hello Melancholie. What should be done to enable "most missed articles" on pl.wiktionary? --Derbeth 13:36, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

See wikt:pl:Wikisłownik:Najczęściej_szukane_hasła :-)
You can import that JavaScript mentioned on top there; that will improve results. --- Best regards, Melancholie 14:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Most missed articles on cs.wikt

[edit]

Hello. I wanna ask if you could enable the project Most missed articles on Czech Wiktionary or if some our action there is needed. I have only few information about so I'm not sure what should be done. Best regards. --Reaperman 18:05, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

See wikt:cs:Wikislovník:Most_missed_articles :-) I currently have to do this with my PC (~per request), as the server has pretty much to do ;-) But it's no problem; you can improve the quality of that list in future by importing the script mentioned on top there. --- Best regards, Melancholie 23:52, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. --Reaperman 09:25, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

WikimediaNotifier breaks images?

[edit]

You can see here the image works. But here (and everywhere else) it's broken. How to fix that?  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:49, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, thanks and sorry! See Talk:Global_notifications#broken_image_link. Will have to move from a rather quick-and-dirty MediaWiki based solution towards a proper script solution anyway, would have fixed things naturally; but now it should work this way too. --- Best regards, Melancholie 00:17, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bot at Wikispecies

Hi, is your bot down? It hasn't been active over a week. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:10, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for that, I have re-started it :-) I had to stop it for some days, because I needed the computational power/resources for other processes. It will stay up now. --- Best regards, Melancholie 15:15, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. OhanaUnitedTalk page 06:17, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Software localization global message

[edit]

Hi Melancholie, could you please add to this message a comment making clear that Betawiki is not a Wikimedia project? Even though it is stated (not quite prominently, though) in the main page of Betawiki, this is a basic point to make in order not to subtly mislead Wikimedians. --0 º 15:03, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done, this seems to be an quite important issue for some. Not sure why though ;-) --- Nice regards, Melancholie 03:11, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Melancholie. For me it just works the other way round. I am not sure why something so basic is a project out of Wikimedia and why so many seem so complacent with it or just do not seem to even notice it... it seems the easy turn of the blind eye in the impulse of the momentum of usefulness. [...]. The more I think about it the less I understand it. Anyway, here you call the project not yet a Wikimedia project. Does that mean it is going to become a Wikimedia project? Regards. -- 0 º 23:42, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Don't know; but I noticed that myself as well ;-) Did already correct that with this diff ("no ... so far" :-) --- Greetings, Melancholie 02:56, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just a heads up

[edit]

I moved your "Individual preferences?" Wikibooks Logo topic to the main talk page; you'd accidentally placed it in an archive. EVula // talk // // 19:59, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It actually belongs to the archive talk page, as it refers to the content of that, not the heading page. Now it's missing context, but it's OK ;-) I just fixed the links to that. --- Best regards, Melancholie 20:05, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: Global notifications

[edit]

Re: this edit. I'm not objecting to you calling it MediaZilla. :P It's just that mediazilla: is used when linking directly to the main bugzilla page and bugzilla: is used when you name a bug number, it bypasses the redirect. ;-) Cbrown1023 talk 23:18, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, didn't know so far that there is a difference; you are right, mediazilla: does redirect people from /# to show_bug.cgi?id=#. Thanks for this note :-) This should actually be clarified at Bugzilla and Interwiki map. --- Nice regards, Melancholie 23:28, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

WikimediaNotifier edit summary

[edit]

Please don't use the default "Automated import of articles" edit summary. It was used by a prolific vandalbot on bewiki. To monitor that, we had added that edit summary to the IRC monitoring bots & thus your bot is triggering them. We'd like to keep that as a monitoring rule in case that vandal returns (or others abuse pywikipediabot), and your bot should probably use a more descriptive edit summary anyways. Thanks a bunch.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 02:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Of course; the point is that something went wrong with the automated edit summary, sorry. Strange. Will look what actually happened (actually the standard pywikipedia messages should be disabled (should have been empty in this case, hmm)). --- Regards, Melancholie 11:37, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I seem to have missed to comment out a line in pagefromfile.py; normally it's done automatically, but I seem to have done this manually there, or whatever. Done now. --- Thanks, Melancholie 11:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi Melancholie, I read the global notifications through a RSS reader that doesn't allow me to understand clearly what you notify. So would it be possible for you to add a more telling object, as +new magic word, adding translation on the week and so? Abbreviations would be great too. Thank you. --Elitre 14:45, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hello Elitre, which RSS reader do you use? Normally the edit summary is shown for Thunderbird e.g. Edit summaries are given on local wikis, see contribs. For smaller updates only 'update' is given yet, though (but can be specified through the edit summary for the bot on Meta). The global RSS feed on Meta will be replaced by a nicer HTML-like RSS feed in future, by the way. --- Best regards, Melancholie 11:19, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I did not think of checking whether the it.wiki version had edit summaries, sorry. My reader is Firefox' add-on Sage, I removed the feed from Meta now. Thank you. PS.: About the new magic word, I was wondering about which gender you match with statuses, is the "available" one male or female? :-p --Elitre 13:17, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean with that, do you want to know my actual gender? --- Nice regards, Melancholie 14:03, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

No! Forget about it. It was a stupid joke and maybe it only works in Italian. Thanks again for your time. --Elitre 22:23, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Edit page rendering bug

[edit]

Please see bugzilla:17232.
Your edittools page contains 13 opening <p> tags, but as much as 16 closing </p> tags, what invalidates your HTML, so either remove those 3 surplus closing p-tags or (preferably) add 3 opening p-tags in front of them to fix this bug. You can find these tags around id="european". --- Best regards, Melancholie (مناقشه) 02:42، 30 يناير 2009 (UTC)

  • [2] [3] Hey, thanks for notifying me, but I just don't know how to fix the problem :(
  • However, we intended for those lines to appear as they are already appearing right now.
  • Excuse me, I will paste the box here. Notice that I will redirect it to appear from right to left exactly as it appears on arz.wikipedia

...

  • Then how are those lines supposed to appear as in seperate lines (not connected on the same line), without making that problem you are talking about?
  • I don't know if I have the right to ask for this, but could you edit the box (if it had a problem, without changing how it looks) to fix the problem? I would be very thankful :)

THEwikiStics

[edit]

Hey, buddy, I don't mean to sound bossy, but, what happened with THEwikiStics? If you're not going to update this anymore, do you know if there's a place where we can check the top 1000 monthly hit pages for each Wikipedia? I'm particularly interested in the Spanish wikipedia. Thanks in advance. Dove 13:34, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dove, sorry for the outdated stats, I am going to fix that as soon as possible; had some problems with the resources and particularly with lack of time, time/life is merciless. --- Sorry for the late answer, Melancholie 20:14, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Melancholie, you don't have to be sorry. I'll be checkin then, thank you again for your effort in this project. Dove 23:44, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I cannot express how grateful I am. If you're curious, I'll tell you why I needed this list updated. In the Spanish Wikipedia, we're taking special considerations for the most popular articles, because we have concluded that these pages are probably the most representative of the project. To achieve this, we’re constantly monitoring and improving their contents. Of course, we need to know which articles to look. Thanks again. Dove 04:12, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is nice to see that the (now up-to-date again) list is useful :-) --- Kind regards, Melancholie 01:17, 28 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Mal so mal so, IE eben.
Vielen herzlichen Dank :) --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:18, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
--- MfG, Melancholie 20:24, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

How do Global notifications/requests et approved? There are a few good looking ones there.

We are discussing on wikimediameta-l (I know, how quaint!) how to use the notifier to share messages about strategic planning and the like. -- sj · translate · + 04:12, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Appeal to visitors in the Netherlans

[edit]

Wikimedia Nederland organizes a Wikimedia Conferentie Nederland 2012 on November 9th, 2012 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. We would like to attract as many visitors from the Netherlands as possible. On global notifications/requests an appeal has been drafted in Dutch which should be aimed at any visitor from the Netherlands to any Wikimedia project website. Could you help with that?
