I know you're already experienced, but I hate to see a redlink on an admin's talk page. ;) Should I scatter clouds around here for no reason? I think I will.

Revert Template:IdeaLab/Feature why?

[edit]

https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:IdeaLab/Feature&oldid=8500643&diff=prev

JMorgan is currently playing elsewhere, diabling/reenabling translations after moving some pages.

What I had fixed was to make sure (with clearer code) every part was laid out correctly and translation used where possible.

There was absolutely no mess in that when I wrote it, but ask JMorgan about what he's currently doing, because apparently he does not understand how the translate tool works or what are its limitations. Many of his curent changes for now are not sycnhronized.

I'm sure my edits were fully correct, It preserved the full layout and also prepared other use (notably in the 3 main page where a feature is randomly selected). My changes were consistant with what its bot was already doing, but now he's changing it. Unfortunately, he has not documented how his bot works.

Be careful: there were also bugs in the Features page including it (basically there were mismatched div/div, and the columns on the main page where not closed properly)

You are also reversing clear bugs and reintroducing them, this will confuse JMorgan more.

With your reversal, translations will no longer work at all. verdy_p (talk) 00:38, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

I do not have the time to carefully piece out the edits that don't affect the layout from the ones that do, it has all become so complicated with translation tools. Code may seem more clear to you, but it becomes less clear to me and you have changed the layout of pages - if you cannot tell what is different, please resist making changes. If translations that used to work are no longer working, that is mysterious. Heather Walls (WMF) (talk) 02:18, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
The visible layout was identical in the English version, it did not work in others (and there's another issue coming from the JMorgan bot which is missing a needed parameter for tracling the language, plus another bad assumption using and exact match of FULLPAGENAME).
Oh well... So much work tracking (patiently) what was not working, now broken because you don't undertand it or simply because you have only thought about it in English.
JMorgan and others want to support more languages. These pages are mostly intended for mission priorities and goals, in communities where English is a minor secondary language badly understood and almost impossible to write even if people may read some limited texts.
Your reaction (reverting everything) is a real deception (Wikiemdia works on the concept "be bold", and I did not change radically your design, visibly you don(t want translations, other do). I suggest that your tem involves some more WMF staff that also understand the lingusitic issues and that you meet them in some brainstorming for solutions. verdy_p (talk) 02:47, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I also note that one of your revert was because of a "misalignment problem", something that was already existing even before my change. You have tried to use a bad quirk witin negative top margin; this is really a very bad trick used in these pages that also break on various browsers with bad effects such as hiding useful content, and not working on all screen sizes (you have then used a page container forcing a page widhth: another bad trick.)
There are other ways to enforce the vertical alignment of floating divs.
Even with our urrnt version you've had to readjust this margin and according to the displayed content below it, and this already does not work because this content changes.
I also note that you ahve also revertd my changes in the Feature template possibly because it was not matching the exact height (for a few pixels ?) you get on your own screen. Really, consider testing with other browsers, and see how this renders once the content changes regularly: your tricks really does not work.
In other words, you've canceled most useful changes only to make sure that your tricks matches your desire, but this simply does not work at all. You've wasterd your time, and mine by just reverting something that was more useful than what you're trying without success (now the page is compeltely broken with parts completely unreadable as they are hiding each others, making the partly covered text unreadable.
Really I suggest you to avoid all attempts to use negative margins, this will always cause problems, it is not maintainable, and it will never work woth translations even if you fond something nearly stable in English only. But visibly you have difficulties, but don"t want any help from anyone if your only action is just "revert because I prefer it on my PC or because I don't understand the reasons of the change".
Your role in the staf should be to initiate the contents, create some basic infrastructure, then give some wheels for cooperation. You've compeltely forgotten the WMF goals and strategic priorities; especially for the role that these pages should play with the community. verdy_p (talk) 12:40, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

wmf:Template:Chapters addresses/layout

[edit]

Since you were the last editor of this template, please see Foundation wiki feedback#Regarding Local chapters overlapping divs. - dcljr (talk) 00:26, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Once again HWalls is too much used to size page elements with pixels in mind and only with English.
There's littel care about thuise not using his own browser on the wide screen of his Mac, and his own version of MacOSX and its limited set of installed fonts.
I recommend to HWalls to test his pages on his smartphone and also consider producing a test layout in Arabic, possibly by using a translatable sandbox in his user pages, and teting it with some longer contents.
Here it would have been easy to test the layout of addresses by collecting some randomly selected addresses to see if their lines can really and reasonably fit.
Note that when you force elements using "float:" to line up in a matrix, you need to set their height in exact pixels. This works only for images, or you must leave enough vertical space for possibly longer contents.
Using "overflow:hidden" will truncate and hide the content; using "overflow:visible" is always a bad idea avoid it compeltely. If you are in doubt of the height to allocate, use "overflow:auto" (to allow a scrollbar to appear).
It's not the first time that I see you, HWalls, creating randomly designed often with broken and completely invalid CSS (or HTML with mismatched closing tags) and frequently forgetting basic tests for RTL languages, narrow screens and forced fonts that don't support other languages than English or a few European languages, and assuming that everyone uses a Mac desktop or notebook.
Please consider that your equipement and language is fine, but concerns a small minority of our users. There's nothing wrong in developing early testbed pages like you do, but you shold then give your page to be reveiwed and checked by someine else that will fix your frequent errors or incorrect assumptions.
I think you are not very much trained to wikis, and more used to build basic HTML sites targetting English users in US, and I'm convinced ypu still have difficulties to work with wikis.
And please take a course with someone else working near you in the WMF. There's nothing wrong in not knowing everything and asking for help to learn (Education/Training is even a core mission of the Foundation, all WMF staffs should have this goal even in their work, they have lots of things they can learn to work even better from the community or from other staff around you, that will be beneficial). So please work less alone. insert your work within a workshop, even if your initial goal was to create and summarize meaning contents and explain procedures with some good sense of look&feel.
But several of your "solutions" do not work as expected : don't assume font sizes, don't assumes even that your suggested fonts will be used. You can also test your page from your browser by using the Mobile view of Wikimedia sites (such as meta.m.wikimedia.org). Things that you should absolutely avoid are negative margins, trying to hide the page title. Also use margins economically (margins of several ems, especially on pages that show multiple colons of texts) will break for many users. on their screen. Finally avoid setting font sizes in pixels, and avoid reducing more the default font sizes (which are already smaller than browser defaults with the current default Wikimedia skins for Vector and Monobook). Finally don't assume that everyone uses the Vector skin (it still does not work properly with accessibility tools needed by some readers) and use distinctive colors for text more sparingly (many people don't see the difference in standard and small font sizes, or will have difficulties to read the text if theur lightness is not enough contrasted).
Finally avoid packing too much info in narrow columns (it is already not evident to place a single column of side text in an infobox, or just a single floating image)
Thanks. verdy_p (talk) 19:47, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I did not make that page or template, I only tried to fix something when a previous complaint happened. Please feel free to improve it. Heather Walls (WMF) (talk) 19:19, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

IEG probox text formatting

[edit]

Hi Heather, I'm working on Grants:IEG/Editor Interaction Data Extraction and Visualization. In the probox the strategic priority is listed as "increasing_participation" despite my writing "Increasing Participation" as the goal. I looked at another IEG proposal and it has the same formatting problem in its probox. Can you see if you can tweak the template so that it produces correctly formatted text? Thanks! --Pine 18:22, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pine! Yup. Also pinging User:Jmorgan (WMF) if that is a thing that works here. heather walls (talk) 18:29, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I fixed it, Pine. Thanks for the heads-up! Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 19:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jmorgan (WMF), I'm afraid that fix only fixed the display of the category at the bottom of the page. The formatting of the text in the probox at the upper right corner of the IEG proposal is still incorrect. --Pine 07:12, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Fair point, Pine. I've logged that as a bug. It'll get fixed--tho since it's not breaking any functionality, I can't give you a firm timeline yet. Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 16:51, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Jmorgan (WMF). For what it's worth I spent some time trying to fix it myself in the probox code, since I know you have plenty of other things to do. (: --Pine 18:55, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Mainspace and talk space

[edit]

Hi Heather, Grants:APG/Comments should have been at Grants talk:APG/Comments so I have moved it. In the original space VE was confusingly enabled, which is a problem because VE does not support signatures. Thanks, --Pine 18:54, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

595 euro for stroopwafels

[edit]

Hello Heather Walls,

This is you eating a stroopwafel at wikimania 2014 in London. I hope you liked it. The dutch wikimedia chapter had spend 595 euro people donated for these stroopwafels. Don't you agree people should pay for their own food? Discussion about this issue (in dutch language) is here. De Kolonel (talk) 22:06, 29 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I for one WELCOME our new stroopwafel overlords! All Hail The Stroopwafel. Oh, and p.s. [1]. Wittylama (talk) 14:54, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am not terribly surprised, but thank you for the insight Wittylama! heather walls (talk) 18:06, 5 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wafel

[edit]

The color selection and design palettes for the W15 site are delightful. Thank you for adding a wonderful visual latticework that I'm sure will be used and varied for years to come. I wonder if there's a way to combine that overall look and feel with a Litographs text-rendering for a full-bleed shirt? SJ talk  18:28, 30 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi there Heather! I started a discussion on the Village Pump over at WP about updating the Wikipedia logo. Majora mentioned to get your input on it. Essentially, I'm unsure where the decision lies, commons, WMF? Oh, and fwiw, I know the discussion should be on meta as opposed to en, have yet to move it over. Anywho, any feedback would be more than appreciated! Drewmutt (^ᴥ^) talk 22:54, 4 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Have you seen this? - dcljr (talk) 22:23, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Will you participate in the discussion about the branding?

[edit]

The only valid place for discussions about anything in the Wikiverse ist on-wiki, everything else ist just futile stuff. I don't see you participating in any discussion at all, why don't you answer at the appropriate venues, i,e. on-wiki, at least on Meta? Do you plan to say anything at all? Hello :) I have asked an essential question on the rebranding RfC page that for 10 days already is left unanswered. Could you answer it? I've pinged you twice but apparently you did not receive any notification; that's why I'm leaving this message here. Thanks in advance for your reply! Cheers, tufor (talk) 12:48, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

The "rebranding" fiasco

[edit]

I do not see how this discussion does not lead the WMF to do a complete reversal immediately, let alone push ahead. Please take a look at all these volunteers you've pissed off and explain to me how this could ever have a net positive effect on the Wikimedia projects. PJvanMill (talk) 23:23, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
