You've (almost) won!

[edit]

Congratulations, your logo is among the finalists for our International logo contest/Vote instructions. That means that from September 15 until September 25, Wikipedians will be able to vote on the logo. If your logo or one of its variants is the winner in this final voting round, it will become the official Wikipedia logo, and you will receive two prizes: a T-shirt with your logo on it, and 100 Euros/dollars of reward money.

But don't just sit there -- you have until September 15, 20:00 UTC to do the following:

Pick up to 5 versions of your logo and list them on International logo contest/Finalists. You can make minor refinements and optimizations of your logo(s) in accordance with viewer comments, but it should be obvious that the final logo(s) to vote on should not be substantially different from the original one(s) submitted. Talk to viewers to find out what they are missing in your logo and if there are several variants of your submission, pick the ones which you think best meet these concerns.

Please note that I have assigned arbitrary titles to each logo/variant on the finalists page. I encourage you to give your logo a unique title and to edit the page accordingly.

Good luck for the final voting round, and thanks for your participation in the contest!—Eloquence 06:05, 6 Sep 2003 (UTC)

User page content

[edit]

My only contributions to the Meta Wikipedia are some logo proposals.

Please be aware that the explanations below are not intended to be included in the final "product" in any way, so if you choose to read them, you can think of them as "spoilers". That's why you have to scroll down to get there -- only go there if you want to.

Brief Introduction

[edit]

Both my proposals (#8 and #12) are intended as conceptual entries, we're not even near to the August 20th deadline, so I (or any other designers for that matter) have no reason to feel pressured to provide the final version. I just wanted to make my concepts clear for whoever gives a damn, so people don't feel the need to argue that "we need more colour" or "we need more entropy". Which is not to say I don't want feedback, that's the whole idea, just concentrate on the concept, not on the visual details. My designs so far are conceptual, although I have to say my 2nd design (#12) is way better crystallized visually than the first (#8). Ok, here goes.

Proposal #8

[edit]

That design is based on a combination of natural elements (visually) and the Fibonacci spiral. I think that's interesting as a concept because the Fibonacci series converges to the golden ratio, the "perfect ratio". Wikipedia on the other hand converges to "the perfect encyclopedia" -- just like the Fibonacci series, Wikipedia will never be the perfect encyclopedia, but it will always converge towards that.

Also, I found the concept interesting because the Fibonacci series, the golden ratio and its mathematical properties have the following properties in common with Wikipedia:

  • intellectually challenging;
  • applies to a multitude of fields in human knowledge (e.g. arts and nature);
  • one can extend their "intended functionality" indefinitely

Proposal #12

[edit]

This design is more geometrical, it sticks better with the official requirements for the Wikipedia logo (PNG, ideally SVG, vectorial, can be scaled indefinitely). Here's my rationale for that design:

  • the sphere in the centre should be self-explanatory, the sphere has traditionally been the symbol of perfection and unity - that represents Wikipedia as a whole;
  • the arrows going away from the sphere represent the Wikipedia "consummers", the people who use Wikipedia for their own purpose;
  • the arrows pointing towards the sphere represent the Wikipedia "contributors", the people who actively contribute to Wikipedia;
  • visually, the outgoing and incoming arrows look as if connected -- but you can't be sure of that. Which is the WikiWiki principle -- you expect "consummers" to also be "contributors", but nobody can vouch for that;
  • the sphere is green -- green has always symbolized growth;
  • the text is orange, which is a positive colour, generally associated with a fruit ("the fruit of our common effort by growing the green thing", if you really needed this corny phrase).

Donation banner translation

Hello, could you translate the donation banner text below into Romanian? Be careful to use html, and not wiki markup.

Hi,

I address you as the ambassador of your wikipedia. Please notice the above project.

This project, more than other projects, will benefit from inter-wiki cooperation. Can you post a message regarding this project at your wikipedia village pump?

Thanks for your help, APH from the English wiki

Trust in Wikipedia

[edit]

this is Cathy from Hong Kong working on a research about trust on Wikipedia. I wonder if you would kindly contact me at researchingmedia@gmail.com? I'd like to chat with you about Wikipedia of your language. Would you kindly drop me your email or IM (Skype, MSN, AIM or ICQ)? It wouldn't take more than ten minutes, but it would help enormously for us to understand the overall trust-based social landscape of Wikipedia. Thank you!

Policy problem

[edit]

Hi, you might want to know that there may be a technical solution allowing both parties to write as they please. You might want to contact LangCom explaining your problem officially and asking for support. It's not going to happen in minutes, but AFAIK we are in a candidate release stage for this software. --Bèrto 'd Sèra 11:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
