Traditional culture is a culture of a society living in line with traditional values. The spread of scientific inquiry followed by technological revolution, industrialization and following globalization of economy pushes traditional cultures into the realms of cultural heritage and cultural identity. Most societies of Turkic people are in the process of completing their transition from agrarian into industrial societies.

As a project directed at documenting all sum of human knowledge and preserving it for future generations that receives global attention, Wikipedia is arguably the best location for uploading individuals' cultural knowledge for making them available to others. 2008 UNESCO document “Securing a Place for a Lnguage in Cyberspace” outlining steps for preservation of language and related culture in the era of cyberspace names use of Wikipedia as an important tool in this undertaking. Wikimedia Foundation & Wikimedia Community currently support around a dozen of various other platforms for promotion of knowledge (Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikibooks, Wikiversity, etc.), all of which are open for Turkic-language communities if they are ready & capable of using respective resources.

Out of a total of 35 initiated Turkic Wikipedias, currently only 20 have active users & 16 exist as a stand-alone projects outside Wiki-incubator. Традиционной считается культура традиционного общества, живущего в соответствие с традиционными ценностями. Развитие метода научного познания и последовавшие далее технологическая революция, индустриализация и глобализация экономики вытесняют традиционную культуру из активной повседневной жизни, оставляя ей нишу в сфере культурного наследия и культурной идентичности. Большинство тюркских народов сейчас одновременно совершают переход от аграрного общества к обществу индустриальному и экономике знаний, и осмысление своего культурного наследия в такой ситуации является особенно актуальным.

Важным шагом для сохранения нематериального наследия для последующих поколений является ее документация, обеспечение доступности указанных культурных знаний и постоянная работа по их популяризации. Ориентированная на документирование всей совокупности знаний человечества и сохранения их для будущих поколений,[12] Википедия является самым популярным энциклопедическим ресурсом Интернета, стабильно входит в первую десятку самых посещаемый сайтов.[1] Благодаря технологии «Вики»,[27] свои знания в энциклопедию может внести любой читатель, а система правил и процедур проекта [22] обеспечит постепенное улучшение качества статей. В результате, использование возможностей данного проекта является одним из важнейших инструментов для сохранения языка и связанной культуры в эру Интернета.[11, с. 8] Фонд Викимедиа и участники Сообщества Викимедиа по состоянию на данный момент поддерживают также развитие около десятка других платформ для популяризации знаний (Викисловарь, Викицитатник, Викитека, Викиучебник, Викиверситет, и т.д.), вместе представляющие собой интегрированное информационное пространство.[30] Все эти ресурсы открыты для тюркоязычных народов, если в их среде найдутся сообщества, готовые воспользоваться соответствующими возможностями.

Упоминание опубликованных результатов научных работ и практических исследований в статьях английской Википедии,[26] на счету которой (более 60% всех обращений к Википедии,[23] или одного из разделов на региональных языках международного общения (русский, французский, испанский или арабский) позволяет донести знания до наибольшей потенциальной аудитории, однако исследования по традиционным тюркским культурам будут представлять особую ценность и актуальность для постоянных читателей Википедий на тюркских языках.[5]

Из общего числа Википедий, инициированных на тюркских языках (35), активная жизнь на сегодня наблюдается в 20, а 16 из них уже живут самостоятельной жизнью за пределами Вики-инкубатора.[5] Развитие контента о культурном наследии соответствующего народа и культурных реалиях его современной жизни является одним из естественных приоритетов малых и новых языковых разделов,[21] тогда как одним из распространенных способов популяризации культурной информации являются вынесение соответствующей информации на заглавную страницу проекта или создание тематических порталов.[13] Методологическая поддержка всем заинтересованным вносить свой вклад в развитие малых Вики-проектов оказывается в рамках работы центра координации усилий по поощрению и развитию в проектах Викимедиа автохтонных языков Wikimedia Indigenous Languages [33] и его российского аналога “Проект: Разделы Википедии на региональных языках России”.[14] Из восемнадцати Википедий на языках тюркских народов России одиннадцать все еще живут в инкубаторе: самый активный рост показывает новичок – сибирскотатарская Википедия.[4]

Все языковые разделы Википедии на языках тюркских народов взятые вместе отстают по количеству статей, глубине их проработке и активности пользователей даже от русской, не говоря уже об английской Википедии.[24][25] В связи с этим википедисты, вносящие свой вклад в развитие разделов на языках тюркских народов, параллельно ведут работу над проектами по написанию и улучшению наиболее актуальных статей, категоризации накопленного материала, переводу и адаптации руководств по развитию своих разделов и популяризации этого информационного проекта в социальных сетях.[7] Целенаправленной межъязыковой координации между языковыми разделами Википедии на тюркских языках пока не ведется, сотрудничество осуществляется на уровне индивидуальных запросов пользователей-редакторов, которые знакомятся друг с другом на электронных вики-форумах или (реже) в ходе офлайн Вики-конференций. Ближайшее подобное мероприятие в России проходит в г. Уфа 24-26 апреля 2015 г.[6] В некоторых тюркоязычных разделах Википедии уже сформировались такие устойчивые центры поддержки развития проектов, как региональные организации в Турции[17] и Казахстане,[9] или тематические группы пользователей Азербайджанской Википедии,[8] другие разделы находятся в процессе объединение своих пользователей (Кыргызстан),[10] но большинству это еще только предстоит. В рамках подготовки доклада по текущим тезисам, в татарской Википедии был создан ресурс, отражающий базовые статистические и контактные данные по тюркоязычным разделам Википедии [5], далее планируется сбор более детальной информации о происходящем в тюркских Вики-сообществах в культурном аспекте [16] посредством массового обращения активным пользователям с опросниками типа «Расскажите нам о вашей Википедии».[18][19]

В соответствие с принципами свободной лицензии Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0, [32] на котором построена работа Вики-проектов Фонда Викимедиа, данный материал может свободно распространяться и использоваться при упоминании авторства. Первая предварительная публикация данного материала (на английском и русском языках) была сделана на странице обсуждения основного докладчика в Мета-вики проектов Викимедиа [15] в рамках обсуждения проекта тезисов с участниками разделов Википедии на тюркских языках. Там же ведется публичное обсуждение по подготовке самого доклада. Взаимодействие с соавторами из других тюркоязычных Википедий, региональных организаций Викимедиа [2] и тематических пользовательских групп Викимедиа [3] осуществляется по электронной почте и посредством публикации сообщений на их страницах обсуждения.

Фархад, мне кажется, вполне нормальное для научной тусовки сообщение. Если правильно понимаю, основной задачей является заявить о факте существования таких проектов, как тюркские википедии, а также их сообществ?
Можно было бы немного сузить название сообщения, а именно - не акцентировать его временнЫе рамки. Впрочем, можно и оставить.
Что касается текста самой аннотации, у меня есть парочка предложений. Третье предложение первого абзаца предлагаю убрать, так как это действие существенно не ухудшит информативности сообщения, но одновременно улучшит адекватность восприятия информации, которую мы хотим донести до уважаемой аудитории.
В первом предложении второго абзаца предлагаю заменить эпитет "наилучшая", применительно к википедии как площадке, на более нейтральный (использовать менее превосходную степень, "одна из лучших...", "возможно, практически единственная..."), или добавить ссылку на источник, утверждающий это (по свидетельству...), либо, как вариант, точно указать область, где она наилучшая.
Конец последнего предложения второго абзаца предлагаю модифицировать следующим образом: "если найдутся сообщества, готовые воспользоваться возможностями указанных ресурсов".
В последнем абзаце можно убрать слово "зеркало", заменив его на "аналог" (ни зеркалом, ни ответвлением центра координации данный проект не является).
Позвольте подчеркнуть, что это лишь мое мнение. Принять участие в научной конференции и заявить о проектах, развивающихся в рамках Викимедиа - прекрасная идея! Буду рад, если кто-то поедет и представит наше сообщество. Что касается меня, то существенные транспортные затраты (Якутск-Мск-Уфа-Канаш-обратно) вряд ли будут восприняты организаторами с радостью ;) HalanTul (talk) 23:42, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Николай, предложенные изменения внес, в некоторых аспектах даже расширил и добавил доп.материал - результат выше (см. английский оригинал и русский результат). Тему приняли и для публикации тезисов в сборнике конференции предложили в течение 3 дней прислать текст оформленный по ГОСТу. Раб.языки - русский, татарский, турецкий. Направил запросы на потенциальное очное представление тюркоязычных Википедий активным участникам татарской и чувашской Википедий, также опубликовал информацию на СО проекта Разделы Википедии на региональных языках России. На мои публикации на форумах тюркоязычных Википедий отреагировали казахские и азербайджанские коллеги, другие видимо заняты. По результатам публикации информации на английском в почтовой рассылке Wikimedia Indigenous Languages и на турецком на контактный эл.ящик заявленный в турецкой Википедии обратной связи пока также не было. Рахмет! Буду рад получить окончательный вариант материала. Судя по переписке, в Канаш может Каийр поехать? С ним я познакомился на московской конференции, очень интересный человек. Одна просьба. Из другой области. Заметил, что в татароязычных ресурсах используется слово "якут" и его производные. Прошу наряду с ним (в идеале - вместо него:) использовать и синоним "саха", "язык саха". Павел обратил мое внимание на наличие стандартных ознакомительного текста про Википедию и карманного вики-справочника, которые (если будет перевод на татарский и другие тюркские языки), он любезно согласился сверстать. Весьма здравая идея. Я несколько раз к ней подступался, в том числе во время подготовки к смоленской и в рамках предстоящей уфимской вики-конференций. Мы с Рустамом рассылали письма с тем, чтобы люди хотя бы откликнулись. Но всерьез к формированию самого опросника так и не приступил. Причин основных два. Первое - откликов на обращения с просьбой рассказать о себе и своем проекте бывает очень мало (возможно, в будущем отчасти тут может помочь прямой звонок). Второе - значительным препятствием к объективизации сведений может быть естественное желание быть или выглядеть лучшим среди равных, или по крайней мере не выглядеть бледно по сравнению с другими. Но давайте попробуем. Возможно стоит опираться на сведения, которые можно получить из статистики. А интервью брать для уточнения деталей, а также для того, чтобы понять какие настроения в проекте и какие перспективы видят ключевые лица. --HalanTul (talk) 23:08, 16 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Хочу кратко познакомить Вас с проектом, направленным на выявление лучших практик обеспечения долгосрочной жизнеспособности разделов Википедии, текущими результатами и актуальными выводами. На текущий момент подготовлена основа для анализа разделов на языках тюркских народов и народов России, сделаны первые шаги для потенциального включения всех разделов. Во второй части своего выступления постараюсь проанализировать причины сегодняшнего состояния ТатВики и первоочередные задачи для активизации ее развития.

Для достижения заявленных идеалов участникам любого начинания необходимо:

  • обладать пониманием реального состояния проекта
  • иметь доступ к информации о лучших практиках среди разделов
  • желание и готовность предлагать, обсуждать и принимать предложения по изменению текущего состояния.

Идеалы Википедии:

  • Википедия является совместной собственностью всех ее участников — текущих и потенциальных, сегодня и в будущем.
  • Достижение цели создания Википедии — создание возможности доступа ко всему богатству энциклопедических знаний человечества на родном языке — и дальнейшее поддержание достигнутого состояния этого ресурса возможно только при задействовании в этом проекте значимой части представителей всех языковых групп человечества на повседневной основе и их активном взаимодействии.

Инструменты анализа группового поведения позволяют социологам описывать уникальные культуры народов или отдельной совокупности индивидуумов и диагностировать слабые места для целостности конкретной группы. Простейшим инструментом для получения подобных аналитических данных для диагностики Википедии является сравнение соотношений статистичеких показателей разделов. Для этого в татарском разделе докладчиком были созданы аналоги страниц «w:ru:Википедия:Список Википедии», «w:ru:Википедия:Разделы Википедии на языках России», а также «w:tt:Википедия:Төрки халыклар телләрендәге Википедияләр», в которых собраны абсолютные и относительные статистические показатели, характеризующие особенности разделов.

Базовые гипотезы и допущения:

  • Жизнь Вики-проекта — постоянное создание новых и улучшение существующих страниц.
  • Здоровье Вики-проекта — активность и качество взаимоотношений в проекте.
  • Большинство посетителей и активных участников проектов — лица, читающие на языке.
  • Носители языка ~ читающие/пишущие на языке

Абсолютные: Кол-во статей, посещений (заглавн.страница) и активных пользователей (30 дней), носителей языка, администраторов и бюрократов.

Относительные:

  • Посещения / Статьи — чем больше число, тем богаче разнообразие тем, потенциально замечаемые посетителем раздела.
  • Посещения / Акт. участники – чем выше число, тем более популярен раздел среди читающих на данном языке.
  • Статьи / Акт. участники - чем выше число, тем больше усилий должны прилагать участники для обновления статей (поддержания актуальности информации).
  • Носители / Посещения – чем меньше число, тем выше популярность раздела среди носителей языка.
  • Носители / Акт. участники – чем выше число, тем больше усилий необходимо для трансформации раздела в авторитетный источник энциклопедической информации.

Статистические данные (для Википедий на языках России имеющих собственный домен):

  • Самые читаемые статьи — в разделе на мокшанском языке (далее на тувинском и русском). Ниже татарской — только чеченская (активная ботозаливка).
  • Самое высокая доля активных участников среди посетителей — в разделе на лакском языке (далее на русском и коми-пермякском). У татар тут дела чуть лучше чем у башкир, чувашей и украинцев.
  • Самое большое внимание активных участников получают статьи в разделе на тувинском языке (далее на бурятском и аварском). Татары в конце списка — чуть лучше чем у чеченцев, чуть хуже чем у чувашей.
  • Самое высокое отношение посещений и активных участников к кол-ву говорящих на языке — в разделе на мокшанском языке (далее на вепсском и горномарийском). По обоим показателям лучше чем у татар ситуация только в разделах на идише и кабардинско-черкесском.
  • Самая высокая степень доверия (дружелюбная атмосфера взаимодействия) внутри проекта в разделе на лезгинском языке (далее на эрзянском и мокшанском). Наибольшая степень централизации власти в русской (далее украинской, чеченской, крымскотатарской, чувашской, бурятской и татарской).
  • Самое сильное влияние бюрократ/а (ов) на атмосферу в проекте в разделе на карачай-балкарском языке (далее калмыкском и саха). Менее авторитарны бюрократы в татарской/башкирской/удмуртской (поровну), украинской и русской Википедиях.

Предварительные выводы:

  • Организовать каталог лучших практик разделов на языках России.
  • Изучить способы объединения усилий российских и русскоговорящих википедистов по совместной популяризации и поддержке развития многоязычной Википедии.
  • Наладить обмен лучшими практиками с представителями других разделов, участвующими в международном проекте по развитию Википедий на региональных языках.

ТАТАРСКАЯ ВИКИПЕДИЯ: ВЫЗОВЫ И ПОДХОДЫ К ПРЕОДОЛЕНИЮ.

Актуальность темы лучше высказать перефразированием знаменитого аята из Корана - «Безразличие к сложностям в жизни отдельного Вики-проекта равносильно безответственности по отношению к своему».[1]

Татарская Википедия [2] — языковой раздел Википедии на татарском языке,[3] имеющем статус одного из государственных в Республике Татарстан [4] (татары - 53% населения, или 2,04 млн. человек). Изначально возникший на базе ряда вариантов татарской латиницы, раздел пережил попытки полного перевода проекта на кириллицу. Некая стабильность в вопросах допустимых написаний была достигнута в 2013, после утверждения Госсоветом РТ [5] общего тюркского алфавита [6] как стандарт в вопросах латинской транслитерации кириллических текстов на татарском [7] и принятия его в ТатВики как единственно допустимого для статей на латинице. [8]

Из позитивных факторов можно отметить тренд на популярность общения на татарском языке: на улицах Казани, в общественном транспорте и социальных сетях сегодня общение молодежи на родном языке уже не редкость. Данный фактор предоставляет хорошие возможности для популяризации среди татар проекта [9] и концепции свободных знаний в целом. За год с момента регистрации автором учетной записи “Татар Википедиясе” в сети Facebook (1 апреля 2014 г.) количество ее друзей перевалило за 1500 человек,[10] за этот же период среднее количество посетителей заглавной страницы возросло приблизительно на треть и перевалило 600 человек в день.[11]

Основным фактором, препятствующим повышению активности в Татарской Википедии является отсутствие дружелюбной среды совместного редактирования в связи с множественными повторяющимися нарушениями основополагающих принципов Викимедии [12] и внутренних правил проекта [13] пользователем, получившим полномочия бюрократа с нарушением местного правила о выборах администраторов и бюрократов [14], а также игнорировании этого другими действующими администраторами раздела, т.к.:
1. большинство старых участников раздела не считают базовые правила Викимедии обязательными для данного раздела;[15]
2. единственный бюрократ регулярно игнорирует действующие правила проекта, консенсусы, достигнутые в рамках дискуссий на СО,
3. предложения по устранению нарушений принципов и правил игнорируются или приводят к угрозам и/или указанию на дверь участникам, не разделяющим статуса кво (включая администраторов/бюрократов других разделов).

Основным подходом для конструктивного вклада в развитие малого языкового раздела Википедии [16] в такой ситуации является работа над задачами, которые не требуют траты времени на защиту своего вклада в проект от поползновений некого самодержца, что особенно актуально в проектах, членами которых потеря дополнительного участника (даже не во всем адекватного) рассматривается как потенциальная угроза его существованию.

Долгосрочная востребованность языка и языкового раздела Википедии не ограничивается только его функциями инструмента сохранения культурного наследия и культурной идентичности. Интенсивная глобализация и переход к экономике знаний требует активного развития возможностей языка в отражении современных реалий информационной среды. Утверждения в статьях Википедии должны подкрепляться проверяемыми ссылками на авторитетные источники, но это не мешает ей быть великолепной средой для документирования реалий, для которых в языке уже существует хотя бы относительно устоявшаяся терминология. Для этого необходима платформа для обсуждения потенциальных терминов [17] и возможность создания заготовок с подобным названием и связывания их посредством механизма ссылок интервики [18] с близнецами на других языках.

Повышение активности в проекте так или иначе зависит от активности и системности мер по его популяризации (особенно в социальных сетях), над чем участникам татарской Википедии возможно имеет смысл работать совместно как с участниками других разделов на языках тюркских народов, [19] так и с коллегами из разделов на языках других народов России. [20]

Татар Википедиясе [2] — Википедиянең Татарстан Республикасында (татарлар - 53%, ягъни 2,04 млн. кеше)[4] дәүләт статусына ия торган телләрдән берсе булган татар телендәге бүлеге [3]. Иң баштан татар латин язуыннан берничә вариантлар нигезендә барлыкка килеп бүлек тулысынча кирилл язуына күчтереп карау чорын узган иде. 2013 елда ТР Дәүләт Шурасы [5] тарафыннан гомум төрки әлифбаны [6] кирилл язуыннан татар телендәге текстларны латинга күчерү [7] мәсьәләсендә стандарт буларак раслаганнан һәм ТатВикидә аны бердәнбер рөхсәтле буларак кабул иткәннән соң бераз тотрылыклы халәт урнаштырылган иде.[8]

Уңайлы факторлардан татар телендә аралашуның популярлашуы трендын билгеләп була: Казан урамнарында, җәмәгать транспортында һәм социаль челтәрләрдә яшьләрнең туган телендә аралашуы сирәк әйбер түгел инде. Шул фактор татарлар арасында проектны [9] һәм ирекле белемнәр концепциясен гомумән популярлаштыру өчен яхшы мөмкинлекләрне бирә. Бер ел эчендә Facebook челтәрендә "Татар Википедиясе" исәп язмасын теркәлүдән соң (2014 елның 1 апреле) аның дуслар саннары 1 500 кешедән артты,[10] шул ук вакыт эчендә баш биткә керүчеләрнең уртача саны өчтән бергә артып көненә 600 кешене тәшкил итте.[11]

We're hoping to launch the consultation on January 18th. Realizing getting all translations in place before the launch of the consultation may not be possible (and that people will likely help with translations after the launch), I'd be really grateful for any assistance especially that you can give in translating the templates at that Meta page link, like this one. It'll probably be harder for casual translators to help out with those!

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Arab World Education Program at WISE Doha 2015

Snippet: Education Leaders at WISE Doha 2015 introducing Wikipedia Education Program in Egypt to WISE Conference attendees, as an example of a program in the Arab World, to share their experience to inspire other universities and institutions starting new programs in the area.

WISE 2015 Sessions and Plenaries were designed around three main pillars such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals; education and the economy; fostering innovation in education systems. Each pillar examined a variety of key topics including: the linkages between education, employment, and entrepreneurship; education reform and innovation in the MENA region and Qatar; emerging models of education financing, attracting, rewarding and retaining quality teachers; and the importance of investing in early childhood development.

Representatives of Wikipedia Education Program Walaa Abdel Manaem and Reem Al-Kashif participated in WISE Doha 2015 in Qatar, the annual World Innovation Summit for Education is the premier international platform dedicated to innovation and creative action in education where top decision-makers share insights with on-the-ground practitioners and collaborate to rethink education. Also, WISE 2015 was the first global education conference following the ratification of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015. Contributions ranged from Arabic Brochure of Editing Wikipedia for students in WEP in Egypt and everybody who would like to edit Wikipedia without ‎problems, The Arabic version of Welcome to Wikipedia reference guideline, PDF of brochure handed out during Arabic Wikipedia Convening, Doha, Qatar, 2011 and Introduction to Wikipedia. These contributions are related to show a case study of Wikipedia Education program in Egypt and how it worked since February 2012 till the November 2015, as the seventh edition ended last October. All discussions were about the program's mechanism and what were the motivations keeping it going. The program helped increasing gender diversity and supported the featured content on Arabic Wikipedia. Wikipedia Education Program, like any other initiative, has achievements and dark sides, for that reason, the representatives had to locate both of them and how they influence the Arabic community and how the community interact with this phenomenon.

Wikipedia in Higher Education in Israel: A new for-credit elective course focusing on contributing to Wikipedia at Tel Aviv University

Snippet: A first-of-its-kind, for-credit, elective course that focuses on contributing to Wikipedia has opened at Tel Aviv University and is now available to all B.A. students on campus

On October 19th a new for-credit elective course called "Wikipedia: Skills for producing and consuming knowledge"[2] has opened at Tel Aviv University (TAU). The semester-long course (13 weeks) is available to all B.A. students on campus and this semester about 50 students from various disciplines are taking part in this first-of-its-kind course in Israel.

Working in small groups to correct copyrights and Non-NPOV violations

The course draws from "flipped classroom" concepts and uses "blended learning" methods, which practically means combining in-class lectures, workshops and small-group activities, as well as online individual learning. Both the Moodle learning management system (LMS) and the Wikipedia Education Extension are used to monitor the students' work and progress throughout the course.

The course has 2 main assignments - expanding an existing stub, as well as writing a new article, in the hopes that the content added during the course will assist not only the students themselves, but also future generations of learners as well as the general public. Though the course focuses on adding quality content to Wikipedia, it also aims to help students sharpen their academic skills and their 21st century skills, highlighting collaborative learning, joint online research and interdisciplinary collaborations in the process of constructing knowledge.

This course was initiated and is led by Shani Evenstein, an educator, Wikimedian and member of the Wikipedia Education Collaborative, in collaboration with the Orange Institute for Internet Studies, as well as the School of Education at TAU. The syllabus for the new course builds on the success of Wiki-Med, a for-credit elective course, which was designed in 2013 and is led by Evenstein at the Sackler school of Medicine for the third consecutive year. While Wiki-med is focused on contributing medical content to Wikipedia and is only available to Medical Students on campus, the new course is designed to accommodate students from different academic disciplines and varying backgrounds.

The course was chosen to be part of TAU's cross-discipline elective courses system ("Kelim Shluvim") and was approved by the Vice-Rector, who heads the program. In that, the course marks an important precedent in the collaboration between Academia and the Wikipedia Education Program, as it is the first time a higher institution acknowledges the importance of a course focusing on Wikipedia on a university level, offering it to all students, rather than a faculty level or individual lecturers as mostly practiced. It is our hope that other higher education institutions will follow this example and offer similar courses to students both in Israel and around the world.

The collaborative production in open educational environments: Is Wikipedia an answer?

How to be a Wikipedian in a week (educactional MOOC for university professors)

Educators with different profiles and from different latin america countries, but most of them professors at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) from different faculties, have just participated in the online training and free course "Educational scenarios with technology. Among the real and the possible" organized by the Center for Innovation in Technology and Pedagogy (CITEP) of this university.

Different educational activities were carried out simultaneously. During the week and under the topic “Open movement”, Wikimedia Argentina participated with three different proposals: starting with an interview of Patricio Lorente accompanied with a short text to know more about the movement. To make an immersive experience we designed " Knowing Wikipedia by first-hand or Wikipedia in the first person" to work directly on the platform translating articles from english to spanish from a list created especially for that purpose. Along with this specific proposal, educators participated in a videoconference with Galileo Vidoni (available in Spanish), where participants could talk and learn more about how are the first steps to become a Wikipedian and the importance of the movement at the local and regional level.

A professor´s educational experience with Wikipedia explained with a tweet. He said: "I´m translating, enjoying and learning with Wikipedia". Know more experiences on Storify.

With only seven days and without being mandatory, different educators discovered how to edit on Wikipedia, indeed many of them mentioned that they had it as a pending to learn and participate on the free encyclopedia, but never had the time or the real chance. The enthusiasm was also present on social networks, where they shared the experience with the hashtag #escenariostec.

The result

More than 100 educators got involved and exchanged their experience in an online forum with more of 280 messages that reflected their learning process while experiencing with the activity. 80 of them were new users, and they created 61 new articles in spanish. An important fact: 78 of them were women, which means that working with educators is a key issue to continue closing the digital gender gap.

Finally from CITEP, they shared the following insights regarding the question that ran through all the activities that took place during the week dedicated to the open movement. Some thoughts can be sum up as follows:

The collaborative production in open environments: chaos or construction? (...) For the teacher also means accepting new challenges: encourage students to produce knowledge in an environment of divergent nature, it requires permanent operations and convergence. In a space that fosters interventions unmarked, the teacher needs to frame depending on the purpose of education and teaching purposes. (…) Wikipedia is the best example of the challenges posed by the digital era in the educational field, it forces us to rethink the relationship between technology and the production of knowledge and allows us to confirm that the collaborative work does not lead to chaos, if not to the construction. Collaboration with Masaryk University turns official

Snippet: The second largest university in the Czech Republic has employed a Wikipedian in residence, leading to a boom of Wikimedia activities in the city of Brno.

Collaboration between Wikipedia and Czech institutions has always been a priority for Wikimedia Czech Republic, but the year 2015 has taken this to another level. First, an official memorandum of collaboration with the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) was signed in May 2015, to be followed by official collaboration with Masaryk University in Brno (the second largest city and university in the Czech Republic), which was contracted in November 2015. In fact, Wikimedia activities in Brno have been blooming for several years now, mainly as a result of the community's own development, but aided substantially by the external interest in Wikipedia by Masaryk University alumni society, demonstrated as early as March 2013.

In February 2015, the university employed one of the most experienced Czech Wikipedians – Marek Blahuš (Blahma) – who was appointed to become the university's first "Wikipedian in residence". Marek Blahuš has been in the center of the Wikimedia community in Brno for about two years, organizing regular Wikipedia meetups, the 2014 edition of the annual WikiConference (more in English here) and creating the Czech-Slovak Wikipedia translation tool, which has famously led to the creation of >9000 articles on Czech and Slovak Wikipedias (more in English here). His current work as Wikipedian in residence is funded by Masaryk University and runs under the patronage of Wikimedia Czech Republic as well as Masaryk University's rector Mikuláš Bek.

Since February, Wikipedia has taken a prominent role within Masaryk University. Marek Blahuš started a "Masaryk University Wikipedians team", gathering local Wikipedians and facilitating contacts with the university, aided by his status of a graduate and current employee in its language center. Articles about Masaryk University alumni and faculties have been identified and improved after consultations with Masaryk University archives and libraries which provided helpful resources. Wikipedia citation templates can now be directly generated from the university's on-line archive of theses. In September, a public conference called "Masaryk University Is Getting High on Wikipedia" took place on university grounds, featuring the experienced Wikipedian Jan Sokol (Sokoljan), who is a philosopher, university teacher and a former presidential candidate. The talks focused on the use of Wikipedia in university education, in line with the successful Czech "Students Write Wikipedia" program. One of the teachers, Jiří Rambousek, expressed his desire to organize a Wikipedia Club as a regular meetup where articles would be improved in a collaborative effort and new editors introduced to Wikipedia.

The program is actively preparing for 2016 when we expect Wikimedia Czech Republic to take a more active role in overseeing the initiatives as well as the creation of a position of a "Wikipedian in Brno" – person officially in charge of the wide array of Wikimedia activities happening in the city. The chapter's annual plan includes initiatives to increase the number of university courses which incorporate Wikipedia into the curriculum, public presentations of Wikipedia at various events, scanning and uploading of images from institutional and personal archives, and much more. Wiki expeditions, animation clips about alebrijes and more at the Tec de Monterrey in Mexico

For the Fall 2015 Wiki Learning-Tec de Monterrey held two wiki expeditions in Mexico City and began a collaboration with the Museo de Arte Popular. We also received our first grant!

The 32-campus Tec de Monterrey system has each semester an event called "Semana i" (i Week), when students forego normal classes for an entire week to work on challenging projects called "retos." For the Mexico City and Santa Fe campuses, one option for students was to work with Wikimedia, with the aptly named projects "Reto Wikimedia." Both campuses opted to do wiki-expeditions to different parts of Mexico City. The Mexico City campus had the larger group with almost 90 students registered, who covered the two southern boroughs of Xochimilco and Tlalpan. The Santa Fe group had 35 participants, and covered the San Ángel neighborhood found not far from this campus.

Both campus took photos of landmarks with the Mexico City campus also focusing on photos of everyday life in the south of the city. The Mexico City campus tallied 5264 photos, 8 videos and 36 articles, including articles related to the area into French, Swedish and Danish. The Santa Fe group tallied 605 photos, and ten articles in Spanish on landmarks in San Ángel.

In addition, the Mexico City campus had a special speaker the borough chronicler of Xochmilco, Sebastián Flores Farfán. A short montage video of the event is in the works.

Wikiservicio, students working with Wikimedia for their community service requirement, added a new component. To attract more students and encourage more students to do all of their community service hours with Wikimedia, a collaboration was set up with the Museo de Arte Popular (MAP)... the first of many we hope! Six students from the digital art and animation major (see last newsletter) have continued working with Wikimedia, but focusing their efforts in creating short animation clips in relation to the mission of promoting and preserving Mexican folk art. One clip has been completed and can be see to the right of this text. So far, the video has subtitles in English, German, French and Punjabi. A second clip is nearing completion at the time of this writing.

Classes and Wikimetrics

Fifteen students completed work with Wikiservicio doing translations, writing new articles and doing photography projects. As of this date, 7 have indicated interest in working with Wikiservicio on campus and another six with MAP.

Five university level classes and one high school class on the Mexico City (South) campus have had projects, all in writing and translation, with some video work.

First grant Wiki Learning received its first grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. The long-term goal of this grant is to establish a system for financing Wiki Learning. The grant, which totals a modest 12,500 Mexican pesos, will be used for swag, such as t shirts, stickers, buttons, etc, especially for Semana i activities and promotion of wiki activities to other campus. The money will also be used for incidental travel expenses, especially for projects needing to move expensive camera equipment.

Wikimedia Argentina, about the global and local in the digital and academic communities

Snippet: Aprender para Educar writes about Wikipedia Education Program in Argentina.

The digital free magazine Aprender para Educar (Learning to educate) of the National Technological University (UTN) is recognized in the community of education and technology in Argentina to write about innovation issues in Spanish, which is not common in the academic dissemination and teacher training field.

Cristina Velazquez, general editor of the magazine invited Wikimedia Argentina to write an article that generally describes their activities in the Education Program, after reading the proposal she decided to publish it as the main article of the 12th edition.

To describe the education program, WMAR wrote two notes completing one another, as doing a zoom: from the local to the global and from the global to the local, showing how a movement of this magnitude does not stand alone, it is part of a huge network.

Melina Masnatta, education manager in WMAR and Patricio Lorente, chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees wrote those two notes.The first one focuses on the Education Program, implementation, challenges and obstacles that they had at the beginning, plans to integrate it into the classrooms in Argentina and how different Wikimedia Projects are also relevant in education. The most important thing, Melina adds, is to strengthen the values that inspire them, show how the free culture give meaning to education in general and digital culture in particular.

Meanwhile in the second part, Lorente focuses on the global movement, the community pillars, the agenda of today's challenges and the effort of their volunteers as protagonists. It is not easy show the world what drives us and why we work as volunteers in different countries. In education very few people understand the value of building free knowledge. There is still a great prejudice or negative perceptions of Wikipedia in the classroom because teachers ignore how Wikipedia is built.

Everybody reads Wikipedia, but few people edit it. We can change this fact by spreading in spaces such as the Journal of the UTN and inviting more people to collaborate and be the protagonist of this huge collective work for humanity.

Online ambassador played a prominent role in helping Egyptian students to nominate their excellent content

Snippet: Online ambassador helped spanish students course in Cairo University to nominate their articles, scoring an exceptional record of WEP excellent content.

Bassem Fleifel, an online ambassador of Cairo university spanish course, played a prominent role to help all students to encourage them to nominate their excellent content to be a featured and good articles in Arabic Wikipedia. Those articles are History of bread (Featured article); Walt Disney; Daniel Radcliffe; Al-Andalus; Poet in New York; and Popol Vuh.

The seventh term, the program started in Cairo University with promoting posts on Wikipedia and social media websites to help new participants understand the general idea of the program as well as holding meetings with professors from the departments of History, chinese, English language and Spanish language. Walaa Abdel Manaem (program leader in Cairo University) and Bassem Fleifel (online ambassador) have held some workshops in campus and online for the whole students to teach them "How to edit Wikipedia". On the other hand, Prof. Abeer Abdel-Hafiz has exerted great efforts with her students in addition to introducing Walaa to new classes of senior students for whom she has organized general seminars about Wikipedia and the education program. At the same time Walaa was assigning her Spanish department students of the first and second year to edit Wikipedia.

This term, Prof. Abeer let the chance to her students to choose any articles they would like to translate from the Spanish Wikipedia to the Arabic Wikipedia or working on articles about history. They already have chosen some articles to translate with the target of nominating them to be a featured and good articles.

Most of students worked on articles about different topics like history, writers, actors, history of food and drink, mayan literature, islam and politics, etc. This course itself achieved an exceptional record of Wikipedia Education program excellent content and the best term ever in the history of WEP in Egypt in general and in the Faculty of Arts, Cairo University in specific. Walaa has held 2 online webinars to follow up with her students in addition to the workshops held at the campus. Regarding numbers, 38 students joined this course, of which 35 are female and 3 are male students. They worked on 1748 articles adding more than 12,282,943 million bytes to the article namespace on the Arabic Wikipedia, with the help of the online ambassador, who also participated as a student.

Norwegian Masters students in History and Archeology twists their brains on Wikipedia

Snippet: This fall masters students in History and Archeology at the University of Oslo take on the task of Wikipedia editing as one of the main parts in a subject on communication of History.

The University of Oslo is Norway’s largest higher education institution, and it is the first time Wikimedia Norway collaborates with this University in forming and using Wikipedia editing as a integrated part of higher education. The collaboration started by Wikimedia Norway contacting assistant professor John McNicol, who already had gotten some media attention on his eagerness to make students skilled in knowledge sharing.

Starting off with a two hour lecture on the secret world of Wikipedia and a two hour editing workshop in mid-September, and in October the students will evaluate the life of their articles. Has there been many additional edits on their articles? Discussions? Request to delete everything? For Wikimedia Norge it is fun to see the students both engaging in Wikipedia editing and using the ways of Wikipedia to discuss how knowledge is formed.

Уважаемые господа,
Прошу Вас дать разъяснение относительно следующего:

  1. Допустимо ли игнорирование участниками ttwiki требований резолюции Совета попечителей Фонда Викимедиа по лицензированию контента и, если всё-таки нет, тогда
  2. Что возможно/следует сделать для исправления ситуации, возникшей в результате допущения этого поколениями в остальном уважаемых администраторов и бюрократов, которые часто и сами вносили недопустимый контент и продолжают делать это сегодня.

В последние 4 года я достаточно активен в ttwiki и ранее натыкался на изолированные случаи наличия в статьях большого объёма текста вероятно скопированного из различных источников (книги/учебники/энциклопедии/печатные и онлайн-медиа, и т.д.) даже среди хороших (w:tt:Урман) и избранных (w:tt:Сәләт (яшьләр оешмасы)) статей - когда максимальной степенью атрибуции является URL-ссылка или название энциклопедии/книги в разделе Источники). Это меня беспокоило, но не казалось приоритетным т.к. у нас в разделе немало других нарушений, связанных с решением сообщества о том, что соблюдение Основополагающих принципов Викимедиа (и законов США) для ttwiki не обязательно.

Через год активной работы со справочными страницами ttwiki, а также мета-переводов, моё восприятие изменилось в марте, когда я стал свидетелем того, как действующий бюрократ добавляет компиляцию материалов из разных несвободных источников без чёткой атрибуции, несмотря на упомянутую выше резолюцию, а также того, что указанные вопросы также подпадают под требования внутренних ВП:Критерии быстрого удаления, ВП:Критерии добросовестного использования несвободного контента, ВП:5 столпов, ВП:Цитирование источников и даже правило при отсутствии или неясности внутренней политики, обращайся к политикам РуВики ...

Установленный мной на одну из секций статьи шаблон-предупреждение был незамедлительно удалён, мои действия заработали мне очередную угрозу о долгосрочной блокировки, тогда как сам Участник:Правда (перевод с татарского, бюрократ в результате цепного нарушения внутренней политики по выборам администраторов/бюрократов) продолжил практику, создав ещё одну подобную статью и добавив соответствующий контент в другую, и т.д. Попытка обсуждения необходимости исправления данной ситуации внутри раздела (Форум:Общие вопросы, Запросы к администраторам) значимого внимания участников не привлекла, с форума администраторов информация была удалена самим бюрократом.

О себе: кроме ttwiki, с 2015 года я активен в сообществе Википедий на языках России, подготовил доклады (1 и 2) к ВМРУ-инициированной конференции «Википедия и информационное общество». Занимаюсь популяризацией ТатВики в социальных сетях, один из инициаторов проекта Многоязычность на сайте ВМРУ, участник Янгантауского вики-семинара (наставник), Финно-угорского вики-семинара 2016 (постерный доклад).

Я также буду благодарен любой помощи/рекомендациям относительно использования какого-либо автоматизированного решения для подготовки/обновления списка статей нарушающих авторские права (например Eranbot) вместо ручной проверки всех предложений с помощью Google/Yandex. С уважением,

Dear Sirs,
I request your clarification on the following:

  1. Is it Ok for ttwiki participants to ignore the requirements of Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Resolution on Content Licensing and, if indeed it's not, then
  2. what should/can be done to correct this in a project where generations of admins and bureaucrats have been allowing and often themselves contributing non-compliant content and continue so today. Thank you in advance.

I'm quite active in ttwiki for last 4 years and I previously came across isolated cases of significant amounts of content likely to have been copy-pasted from various sources (books/textbooks/encyclopedias/printed & online media, etc.) even among Good (w:tt:Урман) and Featured (ex. w:tt:Сәләт (яшьләр оешмасы)) Articles - maximum attribution being URL or encyclopedia/book name in the Links section). This concerned me, but was not a priority as we are having plenty of other violations pursuant to 2013 community decision that Wikimedia's Founding principles (and U.S. laws) do not apply to ttwiki.

After a year of active work with ttwiki help & guideline pages, as well as meta-translation, something clicked in early March, when I've seen an active bureaucrat adding a compilation of materials from different non-free sources without clear attribution, despite the above-mentioned resolution, as well as ttwiki having respective issues covered by local WP:Speedy deletion criteria, WP:Non-free content criteria, WP:5 pillars, WP:Citing sources and even when local policy's unclear or missing, refer to adopted ruwiki policies rule ...

Copyvio warning template that I placed at one of the article sections was swiftly deleted, my actions earned me another long term block threat, whilst User:Truth (translation from Tatar, bureaucrat as a result of chain violation of local admin/breaucrat election policy) went on to create similar copyvio article and add copyvio content to another, and more such later. My efforts to inform ttwiki participants about the importance of fixing this (Village Pump/General, Requests to admins) didn't get much community attention, whilst the note at admins forum was deleted by the bureaucrat.

About myself: On top of ttwiki, since 2015 I'm active around Wikipedias in the languages of Russia, prepared reports (1 and 2) for WMRU-initiated «Wikipedia & informational society» conference, promote ttwiki daylybin social media (member of ComCom list), one of the initiators of Multilingualism project at WMRU wiki, participant of Yanghantau wikiseminar (mentor), Finno-Ugric Wikiseminar 2016 (poster report).

I would also appreciate any help/advice regarding engaging something similar to Eranbot or any other solution to automate preparation/updating copyvio articles list, as opposed to checking all article in Google/Yandex sentence by sentence manually. Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Wikidata celebrates its 4th anniversary on October 29th. Around this date, a lot of events will happen online and offline.

Birthday events

Editors all around the world organize meetups to celebrate the birthday. You can join one of them or create an event in your own town!

Online

A lot of surprises, stories and presents will be shared between October 29th and November 4th. Check the project chat or the mailing-list every day to see what happens!

Приветствую, Visem. Татарстан выделять вроде не совсем правильно – там живёт менее трети татар, хотя по официальной доле татар самый татарский регион. В Поволжье и Приуралье итого уже около 60%, в целом по России ~ 80%, по Евразии >95% (и везде Родина ...). Так что про татарский мир желающий найдёт, что написать. Коллегам в ТатВики предложил список на следующий год определить в tt:Бәхәс:Проект:Вики-яз — 2017. --Frhdkazan (talk) 19:03, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Почему? Ну можно по татарскому языку или народу список сделать, как в этом году с крымскими татарами и с эрзя. Просто в даному случае есть еще отдельная територия, т.е. отдельная республика, но это не значит что нельзя выходить за ее пределы. Может быть статья "Татары в Украине" или "Татары в Казахстане" например. Все таки когда есть список хотя бы небольшой, то есть ориентир. Thanks for your endorsement on the Commons app renewal proposal! :) To answer your question, Russian translations for the app can be submitted at translatewiki. It appears that all of the Russian translations have already been done, however many existing Russian translations still need to be reviewed. You can also submit translations for other languages by selecting a different language from the drop-down menu on the upper right.

    • The organization team is still looking for sponsors to support the event and provide even more awesome stuff to the attendees. If your company can support the WikidataCon, please get in touch with Lydia.
    • Seeing the enthusiasm of the community for the WikidataCon, we raised our attendees limit from 150 to 200 persons. The last tickets will be released on September 1st. People who registered on the waitlist will be notified when a ticket is available.
    • The program committee is currently reviewing and organizing the submissions. We will contact the speakers soon, and publish the program in the beginning of September (around 6th).
    • We're looking for a keynote speaker who could bring an external point of view on ontologies. If you know interesting people, feel free to help
  • Development
    • Worked on fixing the technical glitch in the UI (phabricator:T173543)
    • Did polishing on the Constraint Checks gadget (for example phabricator:T173738)
    • Worked on caching constraints checks results which is needed to enable constraints checks for all logged-in users (phabricator:T173696)
    • Made progress on checking constraints also on qualifiers and references (phabricator:T168532)
    • Worked more on making it easier to see when input in a property or value input field is not recognized (phabricator:T170531)
    • Fighting with load issues in the job queue (phabricator:T173710)

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

You can find more information in the final report for the grant.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.

On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.

    • Removed language fallback hints for dialects to make the UI less cluttered for them and make it less necessary to enter labels and descriptions for them (phabricator:T174318)

    • Unrecognized input in entity selectors will be highlighted in red (phabricator:T170531)
    • Added language code fr-ca for monolingual text input (phabricator:T151186)
    • Added an additional normalization for page titles when linking pages on Wiktionary via Cognate (phabricator:T172987)
    • The API will not only output the hashes for qualifier snaks, but also for main snaks as well as references snaks (phabricator:T174692). Note that hashes (other than IDs) are not meant to be stable identifiers, and should not be stored for a longer time.

    • Finishing touches on adding full URIs for external identifiers to our RDF export so we're good citizens of the semantic web (phabricator:T121274)
    • Added a new mw.wikibase.getAllStatements Lua function in addition to the existing getBestStatements, that returns all statements regardless of their rank (phabricator:T176124)
    • Looking into an issue where unwanted email notifications are being sent (phabricator:T174794)
    • Released version 2.1.1 of the base DataValues component

    • A mw.wikibase.getLabelByLang Lua function will be added (phabricator:T173262)
    • The mw.wikibase.sitelink Lua function will accept a second parameter with the global identifier of a wiki (e.g. "enwiki") to link to (phabricator:T142903)
    • Had to temporarily turn off showing Wikidata's changes on Commons and Russian Wikipedia because of database issues. We're working on turning it back on.
    • Continued work on persistently storing edits to Forms on Lexemes
    • Finishing work on checking constraints on qualifiers and references with the constraint checks gadget
    • Fixed a bug where notification emails for Wikidata changes were sent when they shouldn't have been (phabricator:T174794)
    • Full URIs for external identifiers will soon be in the RDF export (phabricator:T121274)

    • Fixed an encoding problem in the SVG download of query results in the query service (phabricator:T178564)
    • Fixed a problem with change dispatching changes to Wikipedia and co, that sometimes lead to single wikis falling way behind. (T179060)
    • Added full URIs for external identifiers to the RDF export
    • You can leave feedback on how improved fulltext search result page should look like

Dear WAM organizer,

I’m Erick Guan, the coordinator of WAM 2017. Welcome to Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. Here is some information about organizations of events at a national level.

Timeline

The event lasts a month for the participants. As of the beginning of the event, please:

  • Invite previous participants to join. We have a template you may want to use.
  • Setup your WAM page in your local wikiproject if you haven’t done that.
  • Link your WAM page at Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. It’s important for others to understand and connect to your community! Remove the X when you done that. WAM is organized at national level. So I have to ask you to put your country in front of your name if you haven’t done that.
  • Publish a notification about WAM in site notice as well as village pump. Go public!
  • Connect with us. Generally send me an email so that we can reach you for future information!
  • Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
  • Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.

In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!

    • Wikidata will get dedicated database resources, and go read-only for 30 minutes on 9th January 2018 (phabricator:T181645)
    • There were no RDF dumps last week due to problems generating them, investigation is still going on (phabricator:T181385)
    • Improved the threshold for ORES on Wikidata (phabricator:T180450)
    • Working on fixing a regression after a change in MediaWiki core that makes edit links show up on diff pages (phabricator:T181807)
    • More work on persistent editing of statements on Forms of a Lexeme (specifically phabricator:T180467)
    • Improved size of the diff that we sent to Wikipedia and co for changes happening on Wikidata. This is one more needed step towards only showing meaningful edits in the watchlists and recent changes there. (phabricator:T113468)

    • More work on caching constraint results so we can enable the constraints checks for all logged-in users by default

    • Final step towards being able to store statements on Forms of a Lexeme
    • Disabled RDF support for Lexemes as the mapping isn't defined yet (phabricator:T182660)
    • Adding some more smart tracking for Lua usage so we better know which properties from an item are used on a Wikipedia article even when the whole item is loaded (phabricator:T179923)

    • We are saddened to report that Polish Wikimedian Krzysztof Machocki (who was also active on Wikidata) died on 31 January 2018, aged 36, after a couple of weeks of illness. Our condolences to his family and friends.
    • Notes of the IRC office hour of January 30th
    • The call for submissions for Wikimania (Cape Town, July 2018) is now open. Deadline is March 18th. Ideas of submissions related to Wikidata can be discussed here
    • Based on community discussions, the ArticlePlaceholder will soon be deployed on Urdu and Estonian Wikipedias.
    • Statistics
      • January 2018 brought us 9,770,248 edits, 445,027 new items were created.
      • The number of users that edited Wikidata per day grew in 2017 from 2439 to 2672 users, 9,6% more compared to 2016. The number of edits by them grew with 18% to 190k edits per day. We also get edited by 542 IP adresses per day, 50% more than in 2016.
      • In 2017, Wikidata got edited by 46 various bots per day, executing 334k edits per day (63% more than in 2016). The most active bot in 2017 was Emijrpbot, who added 18 million edits to Wikidata.
      • 284 million statements now contain references, compared to 67 million at the start of 2017. The average number of statements per item grew from 5 to almost 9. 73 million qualifiers are now used to provide more details for statements, 13 million in early 2017.
    • New tool based on Wikidata: Random TV episodes
  • Development
    • Diffs now show the entity ID in the page title (phab:T181077)
    • Improved handling of translations in the Query Service UI (gerrit:406301, gerrit:406996), thanks to Li Song
    • Continued working on diffs for forms on Lexemes (eg. phab:T186317)
    • Added summaries for edits on representations or grammatical features of a form (phab:T184702)
    • Worked on showing links to Lexemes and statements (phab:T185332)
    • Rolling out fine grain usage tracking on more wikis, so only relevant changes are shown in the watchlist and recent changes (phab:T185032)
    • Improved scalability of fine grain usage tracking (phab:T185693)

  • Welcome to the 300th Weekly Summary!

The weekly newsletter was started by Lydia at the very beginning of the Wikidata project, even before the first deployment, to keep the community informed about the developments, the new projects and tools. More than five years later, the newsletter is still there, its content powered by the community, and sent every week all along the years. I wanted to say a warm "thank you!" to each person who helped filling the Weekly Summary <3

Over the past years, as you know, Wikidata has grown a lot. More data, more tools, more editors and reusers, more exciting projects led by the community. The Weekly Summary has evolved with us, and the 300th edition seems a good moment to ask you all your suggestions about the newsletter, how it could continue evolving, and how you would like to improve it.

On that purpose, you can find a feedback page to express all your ideas about the Weekly Summary. We're very interested to know more about your reading habits, the parts you're more or less interested in, the new topics you would like to share with the community. Thanks in advance for filling it.

  • A selection of cool tools on Wikidata

Here are a few tools that are recommended by some Wikidata community members. External websites, gadgets or scripts, they are very useful for Wikidata editors or users!

    • The Wikidata Query Service is an infinite source of amazing data and one of the best ways to explore and use Wikidata. (TweetsFactsAndQueries)
    • QuickStatements is a powerful tool that can edit or add Wikidata item en masse, via a text editor or importing a spreadsheet. (Éder Porto via Facebook)
    • Mix'n'match (manual), which helps us to interlink Wikidata with the rest of the web and the world :-) (Spinster, Siobhan via Twitter)
    • WikiShootMe! allows you to see Wikidata items plotted out on a map and shows you whether they have images or not. (Ham II)
    • Yair Rand's WikidataInfo script adds the QID of the equivalent Wikidata item to the page being viewed (on sister projects), along with its Wikidata label and description. (Andy Mabbett)
    • Recoin measures the degree of completeness of relevant properties of a Wikidata item and suggests any relevant statements that can be added to the item. (Rachmat04)
    • Template:Wikidata list ("Listeria") Self-updating lists on wiki pages, to drive projects and show results. Over 14,000 now live. (Jheald)
    • DuplicateReferences gadget adds a link to copy references and add them to other statements on the same item. (PKM)
    • checkConstraints gadget adds notifications on the interface to easily notice the violation of constraints and help people fixing them (Léa)
    • Resolve authors lists scientific articles with the property author name string (P2093) and groups them on the basis of co-authors and topic, which helps to distinguish people referred to by identical name strings. (Daniel Mietchen)
    • The Wiki Loves Monuments map is powered by Wikidata. You can look for a city and find the monuments around. (Stefano Sabatini via Facebook)
  • Development
    • Fixed incomplete "Label:", "Description:" and "Statement:" entity usage messages in various places (phab:T178090). Thanks, Matěj!
    • Improved violation messages for ranges involving the current date (e. g. “should not be in the future”).
    • Continued work on caching constraint check results.
    • Enabled Lua fine-grained usage tracking for better performance on several more wikis: hywiki, frwiki, svwiki, itwiki, zhwiki, bewiki, nlwiki, glwiki, and Wikimedia Commons (phab:T187265 phab:T186714)
    • Representation and grammatical features of the form can be changed using the UI (WikibaseLexeme) (phab:T173743, phab:T160525)

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Significantly (on average to 1/4th) reduced the number of changes from Wikidata showing up on the watchlists and recent changes on Wikipedias and the other sister projects. This way changes that do not affect an article should no longer show up. We're still holding off roll-out to Commons, Cebuano, Waray-Waray and Armenian Wikipedia because of scalability concerns.
    • Working on optimizing one of the largest database tables (wb_terms) (phab:T188279)
    • Fixing a bug on how Wikidata changes are shown on Wikipedia (phab:T189320)
    • Continued addressing security review issues for Wikibase-Lexeme extension (phab:T186726)

Inspire Campaign on Measuring Community Health

Do you have an idea about how to measure the health of your community? Do you want to review ideas that others have submitted? Through August 10th, we are inviting ideas on how to capture the well-being of Wikimedia communities, in terms of matters like conflict resolution, effective content creation, and being able to contribute in a collaborative environment. Ideas can be focused on either quantitative techniques, such as gathering raw data, or qualitative techniques, like surveying contributors. If you are submitting an idea, guidance is available for how to move your idea into implementation, such as through a grant or starting a Phabricator task to engage with developers.

    • EditGroups can now revert batches which created items. These items are deleted in the revert batch. This feature is only available to administrators but other users can easily request revert from the tool.
    • populationWDvsOSM: a new script that compares the population in OSM place nodes and boundary relations with Wikidata
    • user:Lakokat is back to adminship, congratulations!
    • Terminator, a tool by Magnus Manske that finds Wikidata items that lack a label, description, or article in a specific language, has now a version 2 (blog post)

dear farhad, today we were chattting about our work. here there are some links to my endeavour on this field, framed with two reflections on using wikis in school, one presented in belgrade in 2008 (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Slovene_student_projects_in_Wikipedia_and_Wikisource -- in english) and one presented recently (https://sl.wikiversity.org/wiki/%C5%A0ola_v_wikijih -- in slovene, use google translator for the basic understanding).

it consists of the textobook about web based writing on wikibooks (https://sl.wikibooks.org/wiki/Nova_pisarija) and Wikiveristy pages for my courses: https://sl.wikiversity.org/wiki/Strokovno_pisanje , https://sl.wikiversity.org/wiki/Uvod_v_%C5%A1tudij_slovenske_knji%C5%BEevnosti , https://sl.wikiversity.org/wiki/Magistrski_seminar , etc., pointing to Wikisource, where we build a national repository of all the belletristic texts in Slovene language (https://sl.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikivir:Slovenska_leposlovna_klasika) and to the students' assesments at Wikipedia.
