Mirandese

[edit]

Hi, Gerard. Currently, there are 2 requests for wikis in Mirandese: a Wikipedia and a Wiktionary. I noticed that the requirements for the Wiktionary already contain full localization as if it were a second project. From my perception, it seems that the Wiktionary is more demanded right now, while the Wikipedia is kind of "abandoned". As these two are still requests, wouldn't it be more correct to require just the Most Used messages for the first approved project (which may be the Wiktionary)? I think the Wiktionary proposer thinks Most Used suffices, which would make sense if the Wiktionary gets approved before the Wikipedia. Cheers, Malafaya 11:57, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

When the "most used messages" have bee localised, it is fine when a request is made to have Wiktionary first. At that time full localisation will be required before a Wikipedia may be started. It is not really an issue, just get it done. Thanks, GerardM 12:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
That's what I thought. Thanks, Malafaya 13:34, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Could you please update Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Mirandese to eligible? :) Malafaya 13:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Namespaces at os.wiki

[edit]

Saluton, Gerard. Please, help us fix the namespaces issue at os.wiki: it seems that we use Википеди: there, which is not the namespace for Wikipedia:. Could you please check that? That will make the article count fall, I presume, but the thing must be done. And I do not know how to do it the right way; hopefully you can help. Thank you in advance, Amikeco 03:18, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Hoi, these issues are dealt with at translatewiki.net. The name of namespaces is however something that is true for Ossetian. When it is only true for Wikipedia, it becomes a different story. GerardM 11:43, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
The namespace Wikipedia: — how could we change it to the de facto used (but supposedly counted as main space articles) Википеди: — that is the question. — Amikeco 12:27, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
This too is best asked at Translatewiki.net ... Thanks, GerardM 13:53, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
The change of project namespace name (Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.) should be requested at bugzilla:. Other namespaces names can be translated at translatewiki.net. Malafaya 16:26, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Now it's fixed. Thank you all. Amikeco 11:11, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Would you please help us again? We have this problem: bots are doing their best to fix double redirects, but they are wrong using the Ossetic translation from betawiki („рарвыст“ for „redirect“). How could we push the translation from betawiki into use? Amikeco 00:53, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

The best place to ask is at Support at translatewiki.net. Thanks, GerardM 04:21, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Mirandese Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi GerardM. I wanted to know if this page could be updated status of the Mirandese. I'm not sure but Mirandese Wikipedia could already be aproved? Could that process start? Thank you --Cecílio 08:39, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Hoi, either the Mirandese Wikipedia or the Mirandese Wiktionary may start with only the most used messages localised. We have had a request to give preference to Wiktionary. This request is admissable. There are other criteria for starting a new project then just the localisation.
It is to be preferred when the Mirandese community agrees on what gets preference. When there is no agreement, the project that is the most vibrant will go first. Thanks, GerardM 09:34, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. Mirandese Wikipedia should go first(i talked with the user that said that Wiktionary is the first project and explained the situation). Mirandese Wikipedia it's older and has more contents and active users. I just requested the Wiktionary because i think that the Wikipedia can be approved. Most used messages are already done. You can see here Untranslated Most used Messages. So could be started the approve process for Mirandese Wikipedia? Once again thank you - Cecílio 09:49, 6 March 2009 (UTC)
When there is a consensus, that is great. I am sure that we will know that there is consensus when we assess the Mirandese projects. In the end, it is the people that do that have the biggest say in this. Thanks, GerardM 11:04, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Incubator or not for ckb Wikipedia

[edit]

In the process for approval of a Kurdish (Soranî) WP (code:ckb) we are at the incubator stage. However, there are more than 500 Sorani pages in the Kurdish Wikipedia (ku) already which would be moved to the new WP and deleted in ku. Is it therefore really necessary to move them all manually to the incubator? --Erdal Ronahi 08:20, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Hoi, it is for you to convince the Galician Wikipedia that they accept the orthography you support. You have to appreciate that competing orthographies that fight each other are in many way not the best way to promote your language. GerardM 10:10, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit]

Please, take a look at Talk:Language_committee#Requests for approval Meadow Mari Wikipedia. Nobody has answered yet on my last post week ago. --Сай 09:00, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there! I am glad to inform you, Language committee, that now Mari Wikipedia Incubator commutity has three active not-grayed out editors for last three monthes (look at statistics). So, the last requirement is meet now.
Also I want to add, that there will be a big conference in July, 10. There would be around 150 young mari. I will take part in this conference and intend to talk about Mari Wikipedia to involve more people to contribute. There are more chances that new participants will contribute to Wikipedia than to Incubator. So, I am asking you to consider approval of Mari Wikipedia before the start of conference(before July, 10). As for me, I have some technical skills. I can help you, for example in creating subdomain mhr.wikipedia.org or in moving pages, etc. And of cource, if you think that mari wikipedia don't have something for final approval, please, write it here immediatly, so we can fix and solve all the problems before July 10.
Please, post your answer here --Сай 05:56, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Hoi, it has been pointed out to me that my statement was too big. It turned out to be some 1398 characters. I did not know because MediaWiki does not tell you that. As I was told that the officials might remove my statement, I did some surgery on the text.

I thought this included your duties

[edit]

It says your duties affect how fundraising is done. With far less content in the English language wikipedia, which is the largest of them, there are far less people coming here, to look for things enjoyable to read. The mass destruction of a considerable number of articles, after a very small number of people managed to change the notability rules, I think would concern any board set up for the foundation. Someone asked a question about regulating sexual content, so I don't see how that is any different than regulating what else people can keep or destroy. Do you agree that the more people who come to wikipedia, the more donations there would be, and the better off it is? That the massive amounts of destruction, by elitists deletionists who consider everything fancruft and unnecessary, hurts the wikipedia? I mean, when you find an article on a bestselling novel you looked up information on deleted, wouldn't that give you a negative opinion of wikipedia? Dream Focus 17:39, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

The more mature projects are not waiting for directions from the board and, by and large, this should not be necessary. With a project of sufficient size, these things will be taken care off one way or another.
In my opinion there are other things that are more important particularly making sure that the support each and every language gets is sufficient to have viable projects. This is imho vastly more important. The fact that right to left support for languages like Arabic are no properly implemented or that the font used for Lingala is not working well. I think the board is also better positioned to stimulate cooperation with like minded organisations.
It is also important to grow our smaller projects so that they can have the same problems the English Wikipedia has.. The same problems and the same success. Thanks, GerardM 12:25, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Update

[edit]

Hello Gerard, will you be so kind to update this page?Regards,--George Mel 10:57, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Hey Gerard, changes to the project portals should be done on the /temp (ie. Www.wikipedia.org template/temp) pages first and then sync'ed. This makes sure the two pages are up-to-date and changes can be tested first on the temp page (especially when non-admins need to change something). Cbrown1023 talk 21:02, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

That is nice and non obvious. What is obvious is that there are problems with the implememtation of language codes.. this has been mentioned in a bug in bugzilla. GerardM 05:53, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Questionable edit at Public_speakers

[edit]

Regarding the content of the Public_speakers page, absent a process to evaluate actual speaking engagements or the like, which I invite you to help work on at the talk page, anyone who wants to put themselves forward as a speaker should be allowed to do so without interference, within reason. This edit could be construed as a personal attack. Please don't do that, and don't edit war with others, no matter how much you may think they are not here in the best interests of the project. ++Lar: t/c 22:48, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Also, are you really prepared to say that the contributions of everyone else on that list are universally welcomed within the WMF community? That's an awfully big word. —Random832 23:10, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Please unblock the IP you were in a dispute with. It's obviously not Kohs, it's based in Great Britain. This kind of behaviour – for an admin – is very poor. Majorly talk 00:51, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
  • The comment that Lar points out is extremely disrespectful to Wikimedia as a whole. This is our public face and should not be used to attack other users. If you have a problem with another user, please keep it out of site instead of putting it right in an area intended for the public to see. The edit was highly unprofessional and I ask that you never make such attacks again. Ottava Rima 02:35, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
    • I have started a discussion on the talk page of this page, to examine your use of administrator tools (ie. editing a protected page) to continue your revert-warring which you started prior to the page protection. Daniel (talk) 05:18, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
      • warning - If you edit war through protection again, as you did here you may find yourself blocked. Make the case at the talk page but do not edit war. As an admin at multiple projects you should know better. ++Lar: t/c 12:00, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

Edited a template

[edit]

Are you aware that with this edit you edited a template to add a comment? That was rather careless. An editor who is an admin on multiple projects would be expected to realise that. Or if they made a mistake, not have to rely on the good offices of someone else to clean it up. I'm suspecting that your passion in this matter is perhaps making your act rashly and without sufficient care, causing you to make simple mistakes, as well as say things that are not supportable. I note you have yet to answer why you felt it appropriate to edit through page protection. ++Lar: t/c 19:37, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

You may be surprised that I am proud to make mistakes. If anything it proves that I actually do something. When I read what you write you give the impression that this whole thing takes a lot of my attention. It does not. It is a little affair that is only relevant because it is another instance where Mr Kohs abuses the wiki. Personally I find that it has taken too much of my time already. Thanks, GerardM 21:26, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Then you should step away entirely, because in my view it's not been a good use of your time at all and your contributions are far from constructive so far. I note you have yet to answer why you felt it appropriate to edit through page protection. ++Lar: t/c 11:54, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
The question is what is constructive. Reverting the nonsense of Mr Kohs was worthwhile. The removal is the best solution as far as I am concerned. This is in my objective a constructive aim as too much time has been wasted as a result of this gentlemen already. Thanks, GerardM 12:20, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Localization of the Zazaki language

[edit]

Hi Gerard,I am writing for the Zazaki Wiktionary project. As you told me, one of the requirements of opening a new wiki project is to translate “most-used MediaWiki messages”, “all MediaWiki messages”, and “all extensions used by Wikimedia Foundation wikis”. We have so far only translated all of the “most-used MediaWiki messages” and half of the “all MediaWiki messages” for the Zazaki language. There are thousands of messages that are not translated, and we are having a hard time to translate all. That is because special status of the Zazaki language.

Zazaki language is spoken in Turkey. Between 1923 -2003 Zazaki was banned by the government, along with the Kurdish language. Only until 2003 some of the restriction in the Turkish law removed in favor of the Zazaki and Kurdish languages. However Zazaki is still cannot be thought in schools, and it is not a formal language. That is why the Zazaki language is mostly a non-literal language. Zazaki literacy has only peaked up around late 90’s.

Because the language was forced to stay as backward as possible in the past, translating all those Wikimedia messages is very hard. Zazaki is not like Turkish, Persian, or any other state language. There is almost no computer software translated to Zazaki. Zazaki lacks words that define many of the modern-day terms. Messages translated to Zazaki also do not make that much sense to a Zazaki speaker. Most of Zaza people know Turkish and English, and they use computer programs in English or Turkish. Is it possible for us to use either Turkish or English translation for the Zazaki Wiktionary? Then we can slowly translate other messages slowly. I believe that would make much more sense for us for the Zazaki Wiktionary project. --Xoser 04:13, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Zazaki Wiktionary Project

[edit]

Gerard, it seems like we have met all the requirements for the Zazaki Wiktionary project [4]. What is the next step and the time line? We would like to move to our new place as soon as possible. We would like to know if more needs to be done. Sooner we get our place, the better we can work. One of my partner is also wondering when this process will end. He doesn't know English. I am writing for him too. He says he has a lot of time these days and could contribute more in the new place. We also have many entries and it is becoming hard to work with prefixes (wt/diq). I look forward to hearing from you soon. Cheers. --Xoser 23:08, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Dear Gerard,
I thank my colleagues Xosere and Aspar for their great effort, although I am not satisfied with their translations of MediaWiki messages of Zazaki in 100%, because they made many grammatical mistakes, these need to be corrected. But we will correct them gradually too.
I'm also not necessarily happy on the requested Wiktionary, because on here the two (Xosere and Aspar) act against the will of others (all other Zazas) and try to enforce the Kurdish alphabet and they are writing everything with the Kurdish alphabet. That is absolutely not acceptable and needs necessarily to be changed. Please see my arguments against!--Mirzali 20:52, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

Veurblad nds-nl

[edit]

Dag Gerard!

Servien 10:18, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Proposal: The general rules of language use in Wikimedia

[edit]

Dear GerardM!

[I know that my English is not perfect. And I sorry for possible grammatical and stylistic errors.]

I am a professional anthropologist and at the same time, a man with considerable experience as a politician and as a party to legal conflicts. I am very interesting by those most bitter conflicts in the Wikipedia community around the creation of Wikipedia in those or other languages. This, in particular, the sharp conflicts over language: Volapük, Lombardian, Siberian, Klingon, Quenya, Toki Pona, Moldovan.

[I note that the closing pages of the Moldovan and Siberian languages was partly inspired by political motives, respectively, the representatives of Romanian and Russian languages. There is no doubt in the existence of a group of Siberian dialects of the Russian language, and there is no doubt in the existence of a formal written language, which was called "Moldovan" and was considered different from Romanian.]

I believe that decisions on these matters do not meet many of the panellists. This means that the problem of the continued functioning of languages of the Wikipedia needs more regulation. Should be introduced simple and obvious rules, which could satisfy all. Moreover, these rules should be considered obvious and fair to all members of the Wikipedia community.

These rules I have set out in the form of a few simple and universal legal norms. These rules have a few sources.

Main source: These rules follow from the main purpose of Wikipedia. The purpose of Wikipedia - creating the most complete and high quality on-line version of the encyclopedia in all languages of the Earth.

Second source: own practice of the Wikipedia community (especially the Language committee) in dealing with such issues, the presence in the practice of historical precedents.

The third source: the general universal principles of law that have proved themselves throughout the history of mankind, and which recognized the basic legal systems of almost all States, except in the most odious dictatorships. In this case there are two such universal principles:

1) A person shall not be liable for the acts of illegality which he could not have known. In particular, it should not be punished for acts which at the time they were committed were not illegal.

2) If people are free to enjoy certain rights, these rights they can not be taken away or limited. This is a very important universal principle, which dictates the obvious solution of a number of the most violent conflicts in the Wikipedia community.

Based on this latter principle, those languages that already have existing Wikipedia pages, or who have already obtained the right to create such pages in the wiki-Incubator, in any case can not be denied the right to own Wikipedia.

Because of this legal principle should be necessary to reopen the languages of the Wikipedia: Klingon, Toki Pona, Moldovan and Siberian.

On the other hand, these Wikipedias have been closed due to fair and honest reasons. So we must not allow the emergence of similar pages in the future. For this purpose, and should be taken these guidelines.

The general rules of language use in Wikimedia

A. Rules of use of existing languages in Wikimedia

1) Any language of Wikimedia may not be removed from it.

2) Administrators of each active Wikipedia in any language are obliged to care about the quality of Wikipedia articles. In particular, there is considered unacceptable the bot-creation of the main part of Wikipedia articles in any language.

In case of serious doubt as Wikipedia in this language guide Wikimedia Foundation may require the removal of all articles that have been bot-uploaded.

3) If necessary, bad-quality Wikimedia to correct the deficiencies can be returned to the Wiki-incubator.

4) In case if the language is used in two or more writing systems, separate sections for each type of writing is not created. Instead, is necessary to create a program that can translate the contents of any article on this language from one writing system into another.

We are welcoming the creation for any language of Wikipedia, program that gives the contents of articles into the International Phonetic Alphabet, as well as program that translates into the Latin transcription of the contents of articles in those languages, which made other writing systems.

B. Rules for the establishment of Wikipedia and Wiki-Incubator for new languages

1) In the Wikipedia and Wiki-incubator can be created sections in any native (living or dead) language, having the code ISO 639-3.

2) In the Wikipedia can be created partitions on any living language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:

a) there are people for whom this language is native;

b) these language has a literature and electronic sites;

c) there is a scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;

d) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.

3) In the Wikipedia can be created sections on any recently extinct language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:

a) The language died out not earlier than 1850;

b) there is a tutorial of the language;

c) these language has a literature and electronic sites;

d) there is the scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;

e) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.

4) In the Wikipedia can be created partitions on any dead language, not having the code ISO 639-3, if it satisfies the following conditions:

a) in that language existed and survived to the present day own rich literature;

b) there is a tutorial of the language;

c) these language has a modern literature and electronic sites;

d) there is the scientific description of the language: its vocabulary and grammar;

e) The Wikipedia has pages devoted to this language in English and at least three other languages.

5) All the languages that do not meet the criteria set out in paragraphs 1), 2), 3) and 4), are considered to be artificial.

In Wikipedia, there are sections of the following artificial (constructed) languages: Esperanto, Simple English, Ido, Novial, Intelingua, Interlingue (Occidental), Volapük, Lojban, Quenya, Klingon, Siberian, Toki Pona, and Lingua Franca Nova.

In the Wikipedia is not possible to create partitions on any other artificial languages.

As an exception, the decision to establish a section of Wikipedia in any other artificial language can be accepted by Wikimedia Board of Trustees. In this case the language must meet all the requirements of paragraph 4) for the dead languages and have code ISO 639-3 and a level of development and popularity of not less than the Quenya in 2009.

6) If a native language has the code ISO 639-3, but does not satisfy the conditions about 2) or 3) or 4), proposal of this language can be rejected.

I believe that the adoption of these rules will remove all the stress and all the discussions around the language policy of Wikipedia.

Best Regards,

Ihor Rassokha, Ukraine

validation criteria of a project in incubation

[edit]

At what rate translation project in incubation (incubator, wikisource or betawikiversity) can claim to be observed and followed with interest by the commitees. It would also be interesting to know the rate of monthly contributions is the second criteria. Does this rate may be added in terms of indication of maturity of a project ? Crochet.david 17:11, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Personally I start looking at the content of projects once they have achieved the threshold for localisation. Often people signal when their localisation is done. Typically I am likely to notice when I do my monthly localisation updates on Wikipedias.
The prodding is welcomed. GerardM 17:19, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
more than 80 % of "Extensions used by Wikimedia message" translated since 5 months and 5 monthly actives contributors since 5 months are a good starting to allow comittee to be noted with interest an incubating project ? Crochet.david 17:15, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
The activity is recongised by the tool of Pathoschild. The point is that there is enough to start with, the localisation should be done and there is a start of a community.. Thanks, ~~

Recent coments

[edit]

Hi Gerard,

I have seen it before and noticed it today again but I would like to ask you to not place comments like no anonymous cowards since Wikimedia and Wikipedia are based on the believe that everybody can edit it.

You protect a page with this comment so you believe that every ip that edits is a coward? I would like to say that there are people working as ip that do more and better work than you or me.

Could you please use more agf comments in the future?

Best regards, Huib talk 10:52, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

I am involved in the language politics. I have found that most of the destructive comments are from anonymous cowards. Most of their remarks are damaging. Given that the languages policy asks people for their support, we require users to commit themselves. Your point is correct in many instances. It is not for things that have to deal with new languages and with the deletion of languages.
I do not consider anonymous requests to me personally as relevant. Also I disagree that there are ips that do a better job. Thanks, GerardM 10:58, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

How to appeal for wiki in 'unified Northern Berber'

[edit]

Please can you tell me how to communicate with the language committee, to appeal the recent rejection of a unified Norther Berber wikipedia? Here are the references: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Tamazight http://www.mail-archive.com/wikipedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org/msg00393.html

At the moment, there is a different Berber language variant spoken in each zone where the language survives, because the variants have been isolated from each other for centuries. The variants retain a clear common structure, pronunciation and vocabulary.

The Berber group (code ber) falls into two main groups, the Northern Berber group, and the Tuareg (Southern) group. Tuareg has an extended vowel system but is still similar.

Each variant within the two groups has achieved its own language code, such as the Moroccan variants Tachelhit, Central Moroccan Tamazight, and Tarifit.

There is confusion because the word Tamazight can be read to mean 'the Central Moroccan Tamazight variant of Berber', or to mean 'Tamazight the language group ber', or 'Tamazight the group of Northern variants'; or even 'a common Tamazight Northern Berber variant' which is the topic here.

The language variants are still geographically separated, but the Internet will now make a common Northern Tamazight language possible, and there is a great collective will to do this. (There is already a code for Tuareg as a unified language and not a language group, but that's understandable because Tuareg variants are more mutually intelligible and more effort has been made to create cross-border works).

The objective of a common Northern Berber literary language is compatible with the stated aims of the Language Committee. But it is the Internet and Wikipedia itself that can make convergence come about.

This is therefore an unusual case of a language that needs a code to describe itself before it can take root. Some authors have already written books that use compromise grammatical forms, and widely-understood vocabulary, and their work would be classed under this new code already.

1) I suggest therefore revisiting the proposal but giving it an x- private language code until the common language's iso-639-3 code has been requested and assigned. There is no risk that the new wiki will become redundant, given that the proposal looks to the future and not the past, and that it does not describe the language of a special interest group. On the contrary, there will be new energy, and the organizational features of Wikipedia are ideally suited to the task of crystallizing the language's use naturally.

2) The existing wikis for the Berber variants are in the Latin script, the civil society concensus. But the official script in Morocco for the Moroccan variants is Tifinagh. In Algeria there is no official script defined, but Latin is the civil society concensus.

I suggest therefore that the script component of the language code is very important for disambiguating the wikis, but it has not been considered as part of proposals and wiki codes so far.

People need to be able to create a Rifian wiki in Latin script and in Tifinagh. Time will tell which prevails, but conversion of texts is easy for editors. I presume that the implicit script understood from the language code alone is the one defined by the country's government, and not the civil society concensus. So the existing Rifian wiki would be rif-Latin, and rif alone would refer to the Tifinagh one. The same for Central Moroccan Tamazight and Tachelhit.

In Algeria, kab would presumably imply Latin since it's the de facto standard, the state has not defined a script, and very little has been written in anything else.

How can I put these two points to the language committee? Anderssakoul 16:03, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

I will point the language committee to this section. Thanks, GerardM 16:35, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. I'll join the discussion wherever it might pop up, or I can be emailed. Anderssakoul 18:35, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

arz translation

[edit]
  • Dear Gerrad ; sorry to bother you about this, as you might be aware there has been some problems due to User:Meno25 efforts in translating the arz messages , my self , Ramsis and Dudi were trying to rectify them as much as possible, Meno importsthe messages in Arabic not in Masry and as arz wikipedia is different this is causing some problems. One of them that the message about needed templates because some of the templates needed is due to the word معطيات replacing Country data , I tried to find this message to revert it to default but I can not find the message with معطيات replacing country data on translatewiki, would you mind helping me in this. Tuareg-Tamazaq/Tamazeq

[edit]

For a converged Tuareg-Tamazaq/Tamazeq language, assuming a language request is made and granted, I have a technical question about Wikipedia pages:

There could be a default script for the wiki shown first, with tabs at the top for alternatives, as for Serbian.

The content itself would be available in two encodings - in Latin script, transformed to Tifinagh one-way (or two way if capital letters are dealt with). But additionally the Tifinagh content needs to be shown with different fonts according to the region of the user - this is important.

Is it technically possible, if a user selects Tifinagh script, to make wiki pages specify different fonts (falling back to a sensible default) depending on which regional profile a user chooses? (The assumption is that each region will have well-known Tifinagh fonts appropriate to the letter repertoire used there).

Do you happen to know anyone who has experience of doing something similar for fonts? Anderssakoul 16:43, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Hoi, technically it is possible. As it is, your question is quite abstract. Is there a transliteration possible between what fonts ? The assumption is that the writing is indeed the same ? Thanks, GerardM 23:22, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, the writing's exactly the same Unicode sequence - only the font for the pages changes per region (this changes the glyphs displayed for some of the code points, and captures the regional variations at some points in the script). Anderssakoul 01:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Advantages of common Berber wiki

[edit]

The wikipedians involved with the Central Moroccan Berber (Tamazight) wiki are interested in a common Berber language, and are keen to support the Tifinagh script for its historical and cultural resonance. They will probably use this wiki as a vehicle for common Berber anyway, rather than writing the wiki in the Middle Atlas Berber variant described by the language code. That exploits the confusion of 'Tamazight' the language group and 'Tamazight' the specific Moroccan variant. To avoid this, it would be better to create a separate wiki with a provisional code for the common Berber language. Doing this has three benefits:

  • It avoids the Central Moroccan Tamazight wiki serving two purposes and being pulled in different directions
  • It will support future proposal of the common Berber language code to ISO by giving unambiguous evidence of a common Berber language being used
  • It highlights that the Central Moroccan wiki uses Tifinagh and the other wikis do not. That is not justified specifically for this particular dialect - the same factors affect the choice of script for the others, especially the Moroccan varieties where the state specifies Tifinagh but civil society mainly uses Latin. To avoid further confusion, the script tag part of the language identifier needs to be used in the wiki code, or some other solution such as different namespaces used so that the scripts can coexist for each language variant.

I've noticed that there have already been discussions about automatic interconversion of Latin and Tifinagh pages. What design was favoured, and did any implementation efforts get off the ground? Are the contributors still active? Anderssakoul 01:27, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

Before posting a request, I’d like ask you you two questions :

  • it seems ok but can you confirm that br.wikisource is eligible ?
  • we just re-launch the test on oldwikisource this weeks (oldwikisource:Degemer:Brezhoneg); how long should we wait before posting the request and then to have our project ? (in order to better organize ourself : te link to oldwikisource are not verry clean and we apparently have no possibility to fully test the Mediawiki breton interface). Is it a question of weeks/months/years ?

Cdlt, VIGNERON * discut. 14:12, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikisource in Breton will be eligible, no worries there. The localisation for Breton is also almost complete. When the localisations is done, give us a signal so that we can mark the occasion. At the same time work on your source material and signal when you feel comfortable for a release.
As to testing the Breton interface, change your language to Breton and all the software that is localised will show up in Breton. Thanks, GerardM 14:19, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank for the confirmation.
For some stange reason, extension messages (eg. proofread messages) dont show up in Breton even when the messages exist on translate wiki, do you know why?ThomasV answer us : proofread message can’t be localised.

"Western" Punjabi Wikipedia

[edit]

To Whom it May Concern,

I recently noticed a Wiktionary incubator under the name "Western" Punjabi on Meta; as well as a Wikipedia under the same name that had been approved. I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that, while the language above exists, these projects are not written in this language, rather they are written in the Lahori sub-dialect of Eastern Punjabi; with the only real difference of being written in the Arabic script. Indeed, I transliterated the article on Lahore from the "Western" Punjabi Wikipedia to the Eastern Punjabi one, and it worked fine. Since I can read both scripts, I can tell you that this is not the language it claims to be. It is a shame, because those who actually speak that language will not be able to run a Wikipedia now. Please don't approve the Wiktionary at least, without confirming the language it is written in.

Many Thanks.

Breton Wikisource

[edit]

Hello Gerard,

I am one of the Breton Wikisource contributors. The project was given a new start recently. I think, along with the other contributors, that having a proper subdomain is an important goal. In my opinion, this would

  • make interwiki linking cleaner,
  • make it easier to watch recent changes,
  • facilitate administration, if we can obtain a local sysop (I suppose so).

Currently, all the MediaWiki core messages have a Breton translation. If I understand correctly, all the extensions used by Wikimedia should be translated as well (currently 783 translations are missing, I intend to help there). Is there anything else to translate ?

As for numbers, we have 4 active contributors (the other 2 are inactive) and well over 100 pages, many of them using the Proofread extension.

In your opinion, what else do we need to request a subdomain ? Kouign-amann 15:41, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

A request can be made at any time. It will be deemed eligible. Having us consider if you are ready will only be done once the localisation is done. Ping me when it is, Thanks, GerardM 17:00, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
All right, we will do that. Thanks. Kouign-amann 11:20, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Hmong Wikipedia proposal

[edit]

Hey GerardM!

I started a thread about the Hmong Wikipedia proposal at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hmongstudies/message/424

But a person replied saying that Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Hmong is locked.

Would it be alright if it is unlocked? If not, where should the discussion continue? Thanks WhisperToMe 06:26, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

The discussion is locked for anonymous contributors.. so it is a matter of having a profile. There is no point in having people say "I am in favour and we should do something" when we do not know to who to say "so do something". Thanks, GerardM 07:50, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
In that case, I'll just instruct people to sign up and register. WhisperToMe 12:02, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Regarding Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Hmong - Would it be alright if you gave your opinion on whether, specifically the White Hmong language should get a Wikipedia? The "Wikipedia Hmong" proposal seems to be in favor of granting White Hmong a Wikipedia and using the language code specifically for White Hmong (mww). WhisperToMe 23:49, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
As long as the language fits the description, it is fine. This is checked when there is a sufficiently large corpus of articles.

Thanks, GerardM 14:50, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Good - So where should initial articles be submitted to? When does the mww domain get activated? I'll notify the Hmong community that there will be a certain method of submitting the initial articles. WhisperToMe 16:30, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
This is done at the Incubator and the required localisation is done at translatewiki.net. Thanks, GerardM 19:52, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi and Happy New Year!

[edit]

Hello Gerard, I'm Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot), we met and spoke a little while during the Gdansk convention. First of all Happy New Year, I wish you and your family all the best for 2011 and that the minorized and endangered languages will be able to survive and grow as long as possible. I wanted to tell you that the Catalan Viquipèdia will be celebrating its 10th birthday soon (http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viquip%C3%A8dia:10_anys_de_la_Viquip%C3%A8dia) and that we are working on it and plan to have some sessions directed towards getting some wikipedias out of the incubator and we will need at least your advice, at best your participation (so you're invited to come to Barcelona and I hope you'll be there!): http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Teamwork_of_projects_in_languages_with_singular_status. I'll let you know more of the project if you're interested since right now it's still at the beginning... Otherwise have tried nearly every possible way to make our voice be heard in the creation of a Catalan Chapter but until now, unfortunately, we received very little attention from the administrative bodies of the Wikimedia world except from Jimmy Wales himself, which I am really grateful for, if you think our cause is just you can still sign our Members and Supporters' list: http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_CAT/Members_and_Supporters&action=edit. Again, my best wishes for 2011. Take real care and keep on doing this excellent work! Claudi/Capsot 10:02, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

HT-Haitian Creole Wikipedia - Move System Message to translatewiki.net

[edit]

Hi GerardM,

For the moment, there are no administrator on the haitian creole wikipedia as i retired last year due to some difficulties (besides, i had 3 or 4 temporary admin access, as the unique candidate to this post since 2007...)

One of our users is driving translations on translatewiki.net and would like to be able to propose translations for System message (http://ht.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espesyal:ToutMesaj) but it seems that it is not possible to overwrite the translated messages done on this page (http://ht.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espesyal:ToutMesaj), due notably to admin privillege (as i'm not an admin, even not temporary admin anymore, i can do nothing to solve this issue for the moment).

Could you have an eye on this issue and eventually propose a solution ?

Thank you in advance for your interest. Thank you for all the huge works you've done for HT Wikipedia and for Wikipedia/wikimedia in general ;-)

Cordially, MasterChes (Masterches on HT wiki)

Questions to Board candidates

[edit]

Hi Gerard

Based on the statistics concerning the number of pages read in previous years' Q&As, I infer that few voters take them into account. Personally, I see it as a very interesting exercise despite the fact that we the candidates are also the main readers. I believe it is a unique type of debate among us that is especially interesting.

I have noticed that User Alecmconroy suggested a very interesting series of questions on strategic issues. They can be seen here: User talk:Alecmconroy#More questions for Board Candidates (or others). I have given my opinion, but I see he has not communicated directly to the candidates this set of questions. Perhaps you find them interesting.

I wish you the best possible result in these elections and, if you agree, I suggest that we continue having this type of debate regardless of who is chosen.

Cheers and good luck.--Gomà 09:27, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Posted to all candidates talk page:

To aid in the fair evaluation of all the candidates, especially those not active on EnWiki, verifiable data about the candidates is being compiled. Anyone is invited to help compile the data since it is all publicly available on-wiki.

But since the people best qualified to help are the candidates themselves, it seems reasonable to ask:

  • Which languages do you speak? (voter statement)
  • Which projects do you contribute to?
    • For each, when was your first edit?
    • For each, how many total edits? (exact figures not need)
  • Which projects are you an admin on?
  • Are you a bureaucrat? which projects? when?
  • Are you a CheckUser? Which projects? When did you start??
  • Are you a steward? If so when were you made one?
  • Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on a project? (e.g. Like EnWiki's Founder or Arbcom member)
  • Have you served in a verifiable leadership role on at the Chapter or Foundation level? (Trustee, etc)

Are there any objectively verifiable facts that should be included in this guide but aren't?

(Incidentally, this document won't reflect my own personal values or wikipolitical opinions. Ideally it will come to exist outside of my userspace in some neutral, visible location. -- Alecmconroy)

Any idea why this link fails for you? it works for most, but not all, of the candidates. --Alecmconroy 00:53, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

but Hoi, with 490 users in different WMF wikis alone, compiling the data you ask for is too much work to compile. As I am not only but also involved in projects like translatewiki.net, projects that are very relevant to our environment, as I have been involved in the creation and promotion of several bits of software, something you do not ask for, the data you compile may be the same for everyone, it does however not provide the relevant data you hope it does. Wiki India Conference 2011

[edit]

Dear Sir,

This is with reference to your session at Wiki Conference India 2011 on 18th November - Enabling Volunteers for Indic / Localisation. It was a great session for me since the Organisation I head, Multiversity, is into a lot of eContent Development in many Indian Languages. I would like to explore avenues to work with Wiki in the field of localization since this would give me a good hold over Localisation and at the same time We will be able to contribute to Wikimedia.

I have given a brief overview about Multiversity below:

Multiversity, founded in the year 2000, is based in Pune, India. Our organisation has core competencies in the areas of Multimedia Content Development, e-Governance, e-Learning, e-Services, Design Solutions and IT Training.

Multiversity is a Knowledge Partner of Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (www.mkcl.org) which is credited with imparting Computer Literacy education to over 6.5 million Learners in a span of 8 years. MKCL has successfully developed and deployed one of the largest Educational Frameworks across the state of Maharashtra (India), now being deployed nationally in other states of India and internationally in the King Saud University, Saudi Arabia.

Multiversity develops the complete Computer Literacy Program eContent for MKCL. One of the USP’s of the program is that we have developed an inbuilt framework with an Assessment Process that enables individual learners to test themselves and to explore further on their own.

This course comprises of: • eLearning based self-learning sessions with evaluation through MKCL’s Learning Management System • Reading and understanding a highly illustrated book • Providing hands-on practice sessions • Learning facilitation by certified professionals

After completing this course, a learner will emerge as a confident and versatile user of Information Technology.

This program is offered in India as well as Saudi Arabia. We are now in the final stages of revision of the content to the new MS Windows 7 & MS Office 2010. We also have a portfolio of 7 full-fledged courses developed by our in house Content Development Team covering the Adobe Suite – Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Premiere, Flash and a Financial Accounting Course.

We develop this IT Literacy Course in English, Arabic, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Odiya and Urdu Languages. Other Languages like Odiya, Tamil, French and Bahasa Indonesia too are in the pipeline. For language and cultural localisation, we have very eminent Indian Language Experts associated with us for this Localisation Work.

Sir, please let me know how we can take this forward.

Hi,

I saw your message at here. Where can we express our concerns on this? And I request to wait for community consensus before implementing it on ml.wikipedia. --Vssun 11:47, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

We at Tamil Wikipedia have a similar position. The Lohit Tamil defective font issue we raised hasnt been fixed. Though there have been some improvements, We in Tamil community would also not urge for deployment and need to go through more testing before they being deployed to Wikimedia projects. This testing is being done by me, Logicwiki and Santosh offline and there is no bugzilla track and we dont know what exactly is the status. Also there is a serious IE8 breakage bug which hasnt been fixed yet. Webfonts has been tested insufficiently.--Sodabottle 16:24, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Proposal: Language Charter of Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello and Happy New Year! May be, this proposal will be interesting for you and for Language committee generally. Please, answer me, what do you think about:

Language Charter of Wikipedia

I. Project Justification

1. In essence, the language policy of Wikipedia should be limited with just two simple principles: a) Any internet community using any language which is able to create a quality wikipedia in this language, should have such an opportunity. b) Unnecessary duplication should be avoided (for example, if there were several wikipedias in English, each of them would have had its supporters. But it would be by expense of the quality of any of them).

2. The problem is to prevent the occurrence of weak projects which discredit the very idea of Wikipedia. Wikipedia's most widely spoken languages with developed literary tradition already established. Therefore, the need arose for a simple formal procedure to select the number of applications for new wikipedia the ones that can have a good prospect.

3. Language Committee established by the Wikimedia Foundation has done in this respect a great work. In particular, it established the existence of a language code, ISO 639-3 as a prerequisite for the adoption of new applications,. I must apologize for not immediately appreciating the significance of this condition. In addition, members of the Language Committee are trying to take into account the total number of native speakers, if a language has an official status and developed online community. The proposed draft of the language charter of Wikipedia summarizes the positive experience of the Language Committee.

4. The main problem of language policy now is that the Wiki incubator has accumulated a huge amount of "dead" projects which are generally not being developed, even without the main page. My proposal allows the clean wiki of obviously dead projects and prevent their occurrence in the future. In order to do it, it is proposed to create another filter: the site "Wiki-creation". If on Wiki incubator the projects can stay for an unlimited time, in Wiki-creation - no more than for a year. If during the year there will be established the main page and at least 30 articles, the project is transferred to the Wiki incubator. If not - the project is closed and can be restarted only in 3 years.

5. All the dead Wiki incubator projects should be closed in a year. "Living" projects (with at least 20 substantive articles) should stay in the Wiki-incubator on a permanent basis, with a guarantee of not being removed. And other projects - only conditionally for one year, during which they will need to create 30 articles and home page. Those projects that do not complete this task will be closed.

6. For the vast number of possible applications Language Charter provides a simple formal procedure: just need to make sure that the language has its own code of ISO 639-3, and over 10 thousand native speakers. Languages without ISO 639-3 code, and without native speakers are immediately rejected. The projects of existing languages with other written forms, historical forms of spelling, etc. must also be rejected

7. Only two cases will require expert assessment of the Language Committee. First of all, this is the case when the language has less than 10 thousand native speakers. Here the main question is whether the Internet community has sufficient resources to create high-quality Wikipedia in a given language? - It is obvious that in most cases the answer is no. However, exceptions are possible. A possible action of the Language Committee is first to offer a creation of "unofficial" wikipedia within Wikia. You can also offer to provide a list of sites in a given language (the Language Committee does it anyway ) and a complete list of books in that language, published in the past 10 years. Already good, if such books and such sites actualy exist.

8. A special case - the languages with the «multilingual» status. In linguistics, there is no clear boundary between language and dialect cluster, dialect continuum, a set of closely related languages. You can create a single literary standard for several closely related languages (a good example - the German language). But Wikipedia can only be created at a macro language, which already has an established literary norm. That means that a language must already be widely used in education and administration. For example, in this regard Akan language is quite valid - in Ghana, this is a literary language, in spite of some literary standards in languages Twi and Fanti.

9. When decisions were made about the closure of existing wikis, in 10 cases this was due simply to their very low activity. This is a wiki for the Herero, Sichuan Yi, Marshallese, Muskogee, Kwanyama, Ndonga, Choctaw, Afar, Kanuri, Hiri Motu. These Wikipedias have been removed from the Wiki incubator, but nevertheless are treated as existing. In showing them as if they were existing there's no point. The very presence of Herero Wikipedia with 0 articles on the list discredits the idea of Wikipedia.

10. Language issues are directly related to the national feelings of people and their national rights. This is a very, very explosive and delicate issue. The general principle of all democratic legal systems is that the rights that people already use, can not be taken away from them. And in general this principle has been established in the community of Wikipedia. So it is unlikely in the future that any Wiki will be closed due to the fact that someone did not like its language. The maximum that can be done with low-quality Wikipedia is temporarily return it to the wiki incubator. It seems that the community of Wikipedia has a consensus on this subject.

11. However, in the past there were four cases of closure of existing wikis because of "wrong" language. This is a wiki on the Siberian, Klingon, Toki Pona, and Moldovan. In the case of the Siberian language, you can agree that the project was based on the joke. And it's not just about artificial Siberian language. In the end, the Siberian ("chaldonian") dialects of the Russian language do exist. The fact is that the participants of "Siberian" project did not take it seriously. There is no literature and no real online community in "Siberian". But most important is the fact that, although after the closure of Siberian Wikipedia, this project has been moved to another site, it didnґt have any development and has been frozen. So the decision to close the Siberian Wikipedia proved to be right. In the remaining three cases, the situation is different.

12. The most controversial situation is related to the closure of Moldovan Wikipedia. The question was very politicized. From the perspective of Romanian patriots, any separate Moldovan language does not exist. True, the Romanian patriots also recognize the existence of the Moldovan dialect of Romanian language, which is different from the literary Romanian. Literary Moldovan language uses writing based on Cyrillic and is confusing for Romanians. There is in fact an independent state formation - Transnistria, where the official language is Moldovan, not Romanian. If we accept as a correct one the definition that a "language is a dialect with its army and navy," the Moldovan language is all right. In general, the difference between the Romanian and Moldovan is approximately equal to the difference between Serbian and Croatian, or between Hindi and Urdu.

However, there was put forward a really serious argument against the Moldovan language. The authority of independent Moldova established Romanian as an official language instead of Moldovan. In this regard, ISO 639-3 code was repealed.

But before the Moldovan language had this code. And in the libraries of Moldova there are millions of books (including encyclopedias and dictionaries) which are printed in Moldovan. And, unlike, for example, cuneiform tablets from the library of the Assyrian king Assurbanipal, the books of the Moldovan libraries are still relevant. They were widely printed before 1990, and in Transnistria they continue to print them even now. But even information from encyclopedias of early twentieth century candnot be considered completely outdated: sometimes in the Wikipedia there are texts from the early twentieth centuryґs enciclopedias. So even if we accept the view of Romanian patriots that the Moldovan language does not exist now, they will be forced to recognize that this language existed before, had its own code of ISO 639-3, and had a rich literature, which has not lost its relevance. So, the creation of a separate Moldovan Wikipedia is just as justified as the preservation of books (including reference books and encyclopedias) in the Moldavian language in libraries around the world.

13. The situation with the Moldovan is very similar to the situation with the Serbo-Croatian. If in the first case current politicians argue that two different languages is in fact one, in the second case, they argue that the Serbo-Croatian language - it's actually three different languages (Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian) or four (if we consider the Montenegrin ). Serbo-Croatian also had its own code of ISO 639-3, as the main language in former Yugoslavia. And the strong development of Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia shows that a lot of people still feel Yugoslavs. But most importantly is that Serbo-Croatian has also a rich literature (including background literature) which did not lost its relevance.

A third similar case - the Ottoman Turkish language Wikipedia which is successfully developing in the wiki-incubator. This language before 1923 was the official language of the Ottoman Empire and had a rich literature. In the same time it is quite different from the modern Turkish language considering the vocabulary and uses a different writing system. So it's a different language.

I propose to consider Serbo-Croatian, Moldavian and Ottoman Turkish new historical languages which have the right to have their own wikipedia. Obviously, there are enough people willing to develop wikipedia in these languages.

14. Generally the most bitter conflicts in the language policy of Wikipedia are related to language, without native speakers - historical and artificial. The languages of two removed Wikipedias - the Klingon and Toki Pona - are artificial. Wikipedia on another artificial language - the lingua franca nova - "has been taken into account as existing for a few months." Wikipedia in Quenya removed from the incubator to the Wiki. Sharp conflicts were related to languages like Volapьk (artificial), a Prussian, Greek, Coptic, Phoenician (historical).

15. In general the Language Board has a policy of denying the requests in any language without native speakers. In my opinion, this is absolutely correct. Moreover, it should be officially enshrined in the Charter language of Wikipedia. Still, some of Wikipedia's historical and artificial languages exist. And no one is going to close them. So, before formally prohibit the creation of a new Wikipedia in artificial and historical languages, you should make sure that the list of existing historical and artificial languages Wikipedia is really full and fair, according to the principle: "Say now or be silent forever."

16. First, the historical languages of Wikipedia. They can be divided into four groups: classic, revived, new ones (which have already been discussed) and actually historical.

Classical languages of Wikipedia are Latin, Sanskrit, Classical Chinese, Pali and Old Church Slavonic. These are languages of a huge cultural value, the classical languages of the major world religions and traditional civilizations: Western, Indian, Far East, Buddhism Hinayana and Orthodox Slavs. All of these languages are relevant today. Arabic as the language of Islam should be added to this list, but it is now alive language. Only Ancient Greek really needs to be added here - the language of the European classical education, the Orthodox Church and the Christian New Testament. And then the list of classical languages will be complete. There is no more of them in the world. There are also several local languages of religious liturgy: Tibetan, Coptic, an ancient Ethiopian (Ge'ez), Old Armenian (Grabar), Avestan. But Tibetan is alive language. For the Ethiopian church today is more important Amhara as a language of communication, for the Armenian one - modern Armenian, for Zoroastrians - Farsi and Gujarati. And the ancient languages such as ancient Egyptian, Akkadian, Sumerian, Mayan classic, Phoenician does not have cultural content and do not serve as a communication tool in any modern human society.

17. Reviving languages of Wikipedia are the Manx and Cornish. This means that there are many people who are representatives of the Manx and Cornish ethnic groups. I know only about two more such examples: Coptic and Prussian languages. And here, in both cases we are talking about ethnic identity. There are a number of people who recognize themselves exactly the Prussians, not the Germans, Lithuanians or Poles. And a very large proportion of Christians of Egypt (several million) are not aware of themselves as Arabs, and Copts. This means that these people will develop their own languages of Wikipedia, which serve as a symbol of their ethnic identity.

18. Thus, it is proposed to limit the number of historical languages of Wikipedia to 15 languages. Among them, six are classical (Latin, Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, Classical Chinese, Pali, Old Church Slavonic), 4 are revived (Manx, Cornish, Prussian, Coptic), 3 are new historical (Serbo-Croatian, Moldavian, Ottoman Turkish) and 2 are historical in fact (English Saxon and Gothic). The existence of the Anglo-Saxon and Gothic wikipedia justified the historical connection of these languages with English and German - the most powerful language of Wikipedia.

So in order to make the list of existing historical languages of Wikipedia complete, it must be supplemented with five languages: Moldovan (which you just need to unblock), Ottoman, Coptic, Ancient Greek (these wikipedias are a wiki-incubator, and the ancient Greek and Ottoman are ready to be transported into Wikipedia right now) and Prussian. Prussian Wikipedia exists in Wikia.

19. Generally, there are 5 "unofficial" Wikipedia in Wikia: on Prussian, Klingon, Quenya, Toki Pona, and Lingua Franca Nova. Moreover, all five "unofficial" – Wikipedia are actively developed projects: the most recent Wikipedia in Quenya has 156 articles, on Klingon - 189 articles, Prussian – 291 articles, Toki Pona - 427 articles and Lingua Franca Nova - 2655 articles. (!) Pay attention to the main argument against these Wikipedias: "Because of the limited language they cannot create a full article." This argument is refuted by the volunteers of five informal wikipedias: they have proved in practice that wikipedia in these languages can be created.

Therefore, I propose to add to the list of eight existing artificial languages of Wikipedia (Simple English, Esperanto, Volapuk, Ido, Intelingua, Novial, Interlingua, Lojban) four more languages. These are the languages that had previously been expelled from Wikipedia: Klingon, Quenya, Toki Pona, and Lingua Franca Nova. Of course, all the common and popular artificial languages were among the 12 artificial languages of Wikipedia. And the list should be closed forever.

Wikipedia on the Lingua Franca Nova can be directly transferred from Wikia to Wikipedia. A Quenya, Klingon, Toki Pona, and Prussian deserve to be returned to Wiki incubator.

20. Languages Quenya and Klingon often contrasted with other artificial languages on the basis that, letґs say, the Lojban or Volapuk are "serious" projects, and Klingon and Quenya are "playful ones", "weird" languages. But in reality supporters of Quenya and Klingon are not a company of jokers. In these games they play very seriously. Among all artificial languages Quenya and Klingon are inferior only then Esperanto in degree of popularity. They are taught to children. They have "paper" media and a large number of sites on the Internet. Poems, songs and even a rock opera are written on them. When in Russia during 2002 census there was allowed to specify any ethnicity, several thousand people called themselves elves. And for most of them it was not a joke. This is their real identity. In fact, Quenya and Klingon are two successful projects of creating an alternative ethnic culture. They deserve to create their own wikis, and will actively promote them.

21. But if someone from the Wikipedia community are still not tolerant to Klingons or other artificial or historical languages, they are also able to express themselves. The proposed draft lof the Charter provides for the right to boycott any artificial or historical language of Wikipedia, with the exception for simplified English, Esperanto, Latin (the official language of the Vatican) and Sanskrit (one of the official languages of India).

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this!

We offer you a draft Charter language Wikipedia with the transitional provisions. It can cause a lot of questions and comments. The huge request: please, before making these comments, read the Project Justification.

Project

II. Language Charter of Wikipedia

1. Language Committee created by the Wikimedia Foundation determines the language policy of the Wikimedia Foundation on the basis of the principles set forth in this Charter.

2. None of the existing Wikipedias in any language can not be closed.

3. In the case of the low quality of existing wikipedia in any language Language Committee may temporarily move it to the Wiki-incubator, with a clear statement of reasons. After correction of these issues, this Wiki should be returned to the Wikipedia. While in the incubator wiki pages of this wiki can only be accessed from the Wiki-incubator, and this wikipedia is not considered and is not marked as current, with the relevant notes.

4. The application for the creation of Wikipedia in the new language is accepted in case if:

a) there is no existing project in a given language in Wikipedia, Wiki-incubator or Wiki-creation ;

b) the language has its own code of ISO 639-3 with the scope «individual»;

c) the site «Ethnologue» indicates the number of carriers of the language as a native language for at least 10 thousand people.

5. If the number of native speakers of a language as a mother tongue is less than 10 thousand people, but the language satisfies a) and b) of the paragraph 4, e.g. has a rich literature and a strong community on the Internet, then that application may be accepted as an exception.

6. Application for a language with the scope «multilingual», meeting all the other requirements of the paragraph 4, shall be made only in case if the language has an official status of a language of administration and education.

7. It can not be drawn into the language without code ISO 639-3, as well as the already existing language Wikipedia, including his other historical forms, spelling, another system of writing, slang or dialect without custom code ISO 639-3.

8. Historical language of Wikipedia: Latin, Sanskrit, Pali, Classical Chinese, Cornish, Manx, Old Church Slavonic, Serbo-Croatian, Anglo-Saxon, Gothic, Moldovan, Ottoman Turkish, Ancient Greek, Prussian, Coptic.

Artificial languages of Wikipedia: Esperanto, Simple English, Ido, Intelingua, Volapuk, Novial, Intelingue, Lojban, Klingon, Quenya, Toki Pona, Lingua Franca Nova.

An application of creation of Wikipedia in any other language that has no native speakers cannot be accepted.

9. Latin, Sanskrit, Esperanto and Simple English have equal rights with the living languages of Wikipedia. Cross-references to articles in Wikipedia on other historical and artificial languages may be removed from the pages of Wikipedia in other languages. The decision about it is taken by the Wikipedia community of the corresponding language.

10. Any application for a new Wikipedia is considered by the Languages Committee no later than for three months.

In case of rejection of the application by the Languages Committee, the new application for the creation of Wikipedia in the same language may be presented not earlier than in five years after the rejection of the previous application. An application submitted before that day will be considered invalid.

11. In the case the application is accepted by the Languages Committee , a page on the website "Wiki creation" is created for it. At least 30 substantive articles of the new wiki, and a main page should be created during the year since the inception of the page. If this condition is completed in one year a new Wiki is transferred to Wiki incubator.

12. The residence time for a wikipedia in wiki incubator is not limited. Once it reaches a sufficient level of development (a few hundred items of satisfactory quality), this wikipedia is transferred into Wikipedia and listed as existing.

13. If within one year stay in the "wiki creation" new Wikipedia could not reach the level of development referred to in paragraph 11, the application will be canceled and the corresponding Wikipedia page of the project deleted. A new application for the creation of Wikipedia in the same language may be submitted no earlier than in three years after the cancellation of the previous one. An application submitted before that day will be considered invalid.

14. Language committee shall determine its policy with respect to the other Wikimedia projects. As a general rule, applications for these projects can only be made by representatives of the existing Wikipedia.

III. Transitional provisions

1. Wikipedia on Lezghian (lez), Kichwa - Chimborazo Highland Quichua (qug), Salar (slr), Tachelhit (shi), Yucatec Maya (yua), Lower Silesian (sli), Ancient Greek (grc) and Ottoman Turkish (ota) should be transferred from the Wiki incubator to the Wikipedia.

2. Wikipedia in the language of Lingua Franca Nova (lfn) redeployed from Wikia to Wikipedia.

3. Wikipedia in Prussian (prg), Klingons (tlh), Quenya (qya), Toki Pona (tok) transferred from a Wikia to the wiki incubator.

4. Moldovan (mol) Wikipedia should be unblocked.

5. Previously closed Wikipedias in Herero language (her), Sichuan Yi (ii), Marshallese (mh), Muskogee (Creek) (mus), Kwanyama (kj), Ndonga (ng), Choctaw (cho), Afar (aar), Kanuri (kr), Hiri Motu (ho) should be completely deleted from Wikipedia. Paccoxa 12:03, 03 January 2012 (UTC)

Hoi, in my opinion the Language committee is doing its job. The policy works pretty much as designed. It has a limited role leaving the projects as they are. With this proposal there will be a lot of upheaval and not all of it positive, much of it will be not positive at all. There is room for the language committee to do what it feels is necessary. This is done when its members agree unanimously and the WMF board as a rule accepts our proposals. Consequently I am not inclined to favour this proposal. Hello GerardM. When endorse Georgian Wikisource?, All of the major messages have been translated. What else needs to be done to create a partition?--David1010 (talk) 08:04, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Fiji Hindi

[edit]

Hi

I am administrator at Fiji Hindi Wikipedia. Sometime ago you left me a message about fall back of hif to hif-latin. That would be preferred option. As a mater of fact, when the Wikipedia was originally set up, we intended for it to use Latin script only, but somebody (from higher up) decided that there should also be an option to use the Devanagri script. There is nothing in Devanagri script in the Wikipedia and we will prefer that by default hif uses the Latin script. Girmitya (talk) 03:54, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Cantonese Wikipedia proposed namespace changes

[edit]

Hello! Just picked this up from [7]. Sorry for the late reply! I'm not sure what you're referring to, because the link has rotten already. However, you may wish to look at this bug. It is an attempt to localise the namespace names to Cantonese which ended up crashing the entire Cantonese Wikipedia.

The local consensus on the Cantonese Wikipedia is that we prefer the original English namespaces. In particular, we wish to point out that the monowidth colon is inherently foreign (same situation happened to the Chinese Wikipedia, but the transition broke fewer things so they settled with the colon being sandwiched between strings of Chinese words) to East Asian languages.

It should also be pointed out that retaining the English namespace names in the Cantonese Wikipedia is not necessarily against the purpose of localisation. The Cantonese-speaking world, which includes the provinces of Canton (Guangdong) and Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau and overseas Chinese communities, have had centuries of heavy international contact. It has become standard linguistic practice to use foreign technical terms untranslated. Attempting to "localise" everything by creating new buzzwords often makes them sound even more unnatural and is usually unsuccessful. Deryck C. 15:29, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

alternatives for namespaces of waray-waray wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Gerard, I'm JinJian, an admin at Waray-Waray Wikipedia. Sometime in March 2012, we have discussed about namespaces for Waray-Waray Wikipedia. The result is still working fine however, a few would just transcribe the english namespace names to waray-waray instead of using the preferred term. There are few instances where "Category" is sometimes written as "Kategorya" or "Kategoriya" instead of the preferred "Kaarangay". It would not work because "kategorya" or "kategoriya" are currently not considered as alternatives. Would it be possible if "Kategorya" and "Kategoriya" will be considered alternatives for the preferred "Kaarangay"? Just like what was done to the namespace "File" where both "Fayl" and "Paypay" are currently accepted. For the "File" namespace, can we still add "Payl" as an alternative, but the preferred namespace still remains "Paypay".

I would also request if the following can be considered alternatives for the namespace "Special": "Ispisyal", "Espesyal", "Espisyal", "Ispesyal". However the preferred waray-waray term for this namespace should still be "Pinaurog". Thanks --JinJian (talk) 12:21, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

About South Azerbaijani wiki (From 2008)

[edit]

Salaam, dear GerardM I want to ask about South Azerbaijani Wikipedia (Wp/azb). The request for creation of azb test wiki was done at 2008-10-15. We asked many times like here, here, here and here, but it seems that all of them ignored. We want you to prioritize the azb status and it's creation. I saw the other created new wikis status. I think at least the azb test wiki reaches to that parameters that they have (See here or comapre Wp/azb and Wp/min contributors, revisions, articles, etc). We'll greatlly appreciate you, if you respond as soon as possible. Regards. --Arjanizary (talk) 13:06, 6 February 2013 (UTC)

Hindi Wikipedia machine translation

[edit]

Hello Gerard, as you're a fan of stats, Indian languages and machine translation: can you help adding more data on the measurable impact of translation drives and machine translation tools on the Hindi Wikipedia? I'd also be interested in comparisons with other Google Translator Toolkit initiatives (I seem to recall Swahili, possible?) and WikiBhasha (Hindi and Arabic I think?). --Nemo 08:40, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Requests for new languages/Wikipedia South Levantine Arabic

[edit]

It seems like the proposal at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia South Levantine Arabic doesn't even match the "South Levantine Arabic" it's supposed to be. User:AnonMoos mentions A Palestinian guy trying to make a standard writing for Palestinian Arabic. Do you think Nizar Habash would be interested in a true South Levantine Arabic?

Reasonator <-> nl.wikipedia

[edit]

Dag Gerard,

I feel free to talk in Dutch, if you don't mind.

Dick Bos (talk) 16:41, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I do not mind. But I prefer to respond in English :)
The big Wikipedias are the top 10 Wikipedias in traffic. Sadly for the Dutch, nl.wp is not one of them :) GerardM (talk) 16:46, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Asking Help for INCREASING TIBETAN FONT IN TIBETAN WIKIPEDIA <bo.wikipedia.org>

[edit]

Hi, I was just contributor in tibetan wikipedia, on bo.wikipedia.org, tibetan font was too small and even coding every article with big ... /big like that, it still very small. so i don't know where to ask about this problem, and find solution. I found out that Dzongka wikipedia got big font, which is same font as tibetan. so there must be absolute solution. hope you can find out some help for us, we are waiting since long time. thanks for advance.

dz:MediaWiki:Common.css vs. bo:MediaWiki:Common.css. PiRSquared17 (talk) 13:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
Doing it in Common.css can fix this locally. To make a better fix for all wikis with Tibetan font, this should be done in the framework of the Typography refresh project, which aims to gradually resolve all such problems for all languages. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:44, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Economic Data Project

[edit]

Hi Gerard, just saw on a page (crashed afterwards - which one?) your opinion on the project of the Iranian guy who wanted to collect economic data. I have no clue what it is about, but is the problem really getting money to him??? Or do the Wikimedia guys not want to have any transaction with Iran because of axis of evil legislation in US? If it should be a practical question - no problem. It will not be many thousands, i guess. I work in Teheran, so there are lots of ways (without which I could not live here myself). Ok, I have no clue what it is about - but if you can turn anything and need a solution tell me on my sw-page (I do not come here often). Cheers Kipala (talk) 20:34, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, there are many ways to solve any issues involved. The reason is because of USAmerican legislation as you rightfully assume. It is important to take these laws seriously enough. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 10:57, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

I can't await ... to go

[edit]

I can't await you to go, and our good working discussion system to retain. Your contributions on the mailinglist show an egocentrism that should make you feel embarassed of yourself. I just can tell you that nearly noone will miss you. So good bye. --178.0.93.254 11:09, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you brave anonymous coward for having a thought. I am really obvious that I have an opinion. I use arguments and I keep it to the point and personal. If embarrassment comes into play, it is because of the quality of arguments that are being used; they are lacking realism. When you embarrass yourself by stating "our good working discussion system" I really wonder how you came to miss all the evidence that has been given that proves the point how wrong you are. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 16:29, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Is it possible yo change iso code of a language?

[edit]

Hello GerardM, hope you're fine. I want to ask about something that could happen in the future (I know you're not Genie!). Our goal is not just making a Tunisian Wikipedia but also making better Tunisian contents for Tunisians. That's why, I see that maybe we will get a new ISO 639-2 code for Standard Tunisian. At that time, can we change the code of Tunisian Wikipedia from aeb to *** (the new code) or not? (because the aeb is for Spoken Tunisian Arabic, not for Standard Tunisian)

But as always someone poorly versed in history makes all the decisions here. Hopefully, Ukranian Latynka will get more recognition in the future.

Vraag over bot

[edit]

Steinbach (formerly Caesarion) 19:11, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Tunisian Arabic

[edit]

As shown in the new edition of Ethnologue, Tunisian Arabizi (One of the Latin Scripts used for Tunisian) has been recognized as a common script for Tunisian Arabic. As it is the most used script in Internet, we will use it in Wp/aeb. I have slightly modified this method so that it can be converted to Arabic Script. I have created a script converter for Tunisian Arabizi and I will implement it with explanations very soon. However, I need to test it before. So, you are invited to change the name of Tunisian Arabic in Latin Script into Tounsi and change the editing software of Tunisian Arabic Wikipedia into Left to Right format. Thank you in advance. --Csisc (talk) 16:16, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Bot sync from Wikidata

[edit]

Re [16], it would be very sad if getting/using a bot flag to edit articles with Wikidata data was easier than editing templates to make them use Wikidata. I can see how in some wikis this might happen (e.g. because a template is protected and an admin opposes editing it, but the same admin doesn't dare blocking bot X), but I would definitely not promote such a workaround. Nemo 06:02, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

The idea is that when we know about people who studied at a university, we can include the categories. When we know information, why not make it widely available. it would be something that could work in any project, any language. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 09:13, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey

[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

LangCom verzoek Wikinews

[edit]

Groet, --Livenws (talk) 21:15, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Vriendelijke groet, GerardM (talk) 13:45, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
--Livenws (talk) 16:19, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
Ymnes (talk) 21:36, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
@GerardM: ook ik zou een antwoord op de laatste bijdrage hierboven van Livenws zeer op prijs stellen, bedankt alvast. De Wikischim (talk) 13:08, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
--Livenws (talk) 21:43, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Meer kan ik helaas niet doen, alles ligt nu in handen van de LangCom die spoedig werk van dit dossier zal maken. --Livenws (talk) 21:54, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Where is your support for Montenegrin wikipedia?

[edit]

Hi Gerard! I hope you are doing well. Since last time we talked (11 years or more) i have moved to sunny California. Remembering all our discussion and all your arguments back then, I feel appropriate that you should show some regret for your statements back then considering Montenegrin language being all without base, and that you should show your integrity as person with dignity and help Montenegrin people get what they rightfully deserve. Or I need to remind you what you where saying back then? I think Gerard that you should, for your own sake, do that and right your wrongs. Otherwise I would be greatly disappointed in you. This is not one man we talk about but hole nation who suffered greatly because of your ignorance. Decade of inability to contribute to global community is a lot to play with. I hope to see you step up a bit because some of your friends from language committee are quite rude and have negative attitude like they are following your footsteps. I hope that you will use your experience and influence them to not repeat your mistakes. Say hello to your friend Milos! --Ego and his own (talk) 04:14, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

@Ego and his own: Hey, the recently comment of your questions that dropped here by Gerard can be found at [18]. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:59, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

There have been arguments made why Montenegrin are not accepted. As you may know, there are multiple arguments why a language is accepted or not. In the practice of the language committee there is a clear dividing line between what went before and after the passing of the policy about the acceptance of languages. This is not the way nor the place to make arguments or representations. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 10:49, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

What arguments? you clearly shown what kind of man you are. You know nothing about language and claimed since 2006 things that had been proven are false and you still maintain your position. That can be easily proven by your remarks since then. I would not be part of this disgusting and perverted community. And if not in USA court then on judgment day we will settle this when you will not be able to abuse and hide behind language committee and not answer legit questions. I know that none of you know Montenegrin language or any specific but you side with your Serbian friends and change rules as you find beneficial to your personal interests damaging one hole nation. That is worthy of a curse. Thanks --Ego and his own (talk) 17:46, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
The nice thing of your curse is that it reflects most and best on yourself. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 18:49, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Regarding Fonts on dv.wiki

[edit]

Greetings Gerard! I would like to change the font size and fonts used on dv.wiki. It seems most of the fonts used on the package are outdated. I would discuss with an active member CRC43 for a font to be used. But the font size is very small and it is very difficult to use the wiki. Any ideas/suggestions would help.

  • Also, here are the fonts usually we use now for different purposes. check it out

--Glacious (talk) 00:25, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Consider contacting Amir Aharoni. He has been working on such issues in the past and he will certainly know the right person if it is not him. Having the font displayed at a bigger size should not be an issue. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 01:21, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick response! Possible you could link me to his page?

Guianan Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi, I would like to know if you can activate the Guianese Wikipedia project, and please do not discuss it with another administrator, because I think I have sent too many messages; they do not want to answer any more, please, I did all that I was asked to do for this project, Check by yourself, it has been a year since I am told that they will activate it and create officially the Guianese Wikipedia, but they have not done anything so far, so please activate this project because it's really important for me, but it has also developed in me a huge stress, I think about it all the time and it drives me crazy to tell me that they will never approve of it, even though I did everything as they asked, please Create the Guianan Wikipedia! At least for a trial period, if you want just 3 months, but created the SVP, it's really important for me! LeGuyanaisPure (talk) 13:19, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

The Community Wishlist Survey

[edit]

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

What do you think about @Prz rulez:'s comment? This looks like contesting the rules of langcom and is it appropriate to you? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:39, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

New respond:Well... First of all this "grandfather clause" is causing a discrimination. I really can't understand that Bosnian standard has its own Wiki and Montenegrin doesn't. Secondly - I guess a compromise would be creating common Serbian/Montenegrin Wiki with possibility of 2 articles existing - one in Serbian standard and second in Montenegrin one. That would sort of solve the problem. Because, even if I know that Wikipedia isn't (usually) a reliable source for citing, it's not fair that Montenegrins can't use the Wiki material in their own standard. --2409:8902:9301:F7F8:661C:FD23:FBA4:F48 00:55, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

Stress in 'selderie' and 'selderij'

[edit]

Listening to File:Nl-selderie.ogg and File:Nl-selderij.ogg I hear the stress on the final syllable. However, the sources I could find that discuss the stress pattern of selderie/-erij state or imply that the stress is on the first syllable. For example, a publication entitled “Nederlandse woordklemtoon” lists “selderie” as a word in which the syllable following the reduced vowel e (a schwa) is weak (see display (28) on p. 222). And a publication entitled “Wat zal het zijn: i of ie?” states (quoting Schönfeld) that the ie in selderie was preserved because of its “weak tone”. As to selderij, a publication entitled “Metrische fonologie – de representatie van klemtoon in Nederlandse monomorfematische woorden” assigns the stress also for that word to the first syllable, giving it explicitly as an exception to the rule that the stress goes to the final syllable if its vowel is a diphthong (see p. 543 after ie:).  --Lambiam 10:34, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Dus mijn Nederlands is geen Nederlands omdat een boek dat zegt? Als ik selderie koop dan krijg ik wat ik bestel. Bedankt dat je het anders ziet en nu? 85.144.242.74 10:39, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

BBLD

[edit]

https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#Property:P2580

Fake by Kolja, Jura1 and Co. The only vandalism is carried out by them.

  1. Fake name "Baltisches Biographisches Lexikon digital ID (former scheme)" - source gives only "BBLD ID"
  2. Fake regex, source provides a list of regular expressions, but the WMF-fake is not included : https://bbld.de/BBLD-ID
  3. Fake formatter URL : "https://web.archive.org/*/www.bbl-digital.de/eintrag/$1/" reason for deprecation "link rot" - what? Not in web.archive.org, ... by nature of databases that grow, they will never be completely in web.archive.org in the moment where a new item is created, so adding that formatter URL in the first place was wrong
