Comment on "Discussing the future of global affiliate gatherings"

Some comments on the post Wikimedia Summit Purpose 2 - "future of global affiliate gatherings"

1. There seems to be a formatting error, such that there is a stray double bracket. Ping Eva Martin (WMDE) to see if there is a fix needed.
2. I would suggest that the group of folks listed as looking into the future of affiliate gatherings engage members of the Wikimania Steering committee (of which I am one). Other than the Wikimedia Summit, Wikimania is the effort that deals with the most logistics relevant to what might be needed for an affiliates meeting or a Global Council meeting. We consider things like travel proximity to our community, costs/scholarships, regional rotation, trust/safety issues, and visa considerations. Therefore, we are very happy to be involved with this conversation as soon as possible, and have already started discussing within the Wikimania committee how the next few Wikimania locales could possibly support functions similar to what Wikimedia Summit/Berlin has in the past few years. The chairs of the committee are Phoebe and Iopensa, so feel free to get in touch with them, or I can relay any messages. Where to link conference reports

Is there a page here where people can link their conference reports to make them visible to one another? I have mine at Cascadia Wikimedians/2024 Wikimedia Summit report, but I wouldn't expect much anyone to find it there without my linking that. Podcast interview series

For anyone interested, I recorded some interviews in the breaks and are publishing these as podcasts on Wikipediapodden. What is an "unorganized volunteer"?

What is that phrase supposed to mean? It's unclear who it is meant to encompass and what is being implied by it, though it's extremely unfortunate wording, and comes across as a negative implication, either about individual editors' habits/approach, about the editorial community and its approach to editors, or both.  — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ >^ʌⱷ҅_ᴥⱷ^ʌ<  23:55, 26 May 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for your message @SMcCandlish. We agree that the wording is unfortunate. The group had a very short time to draft these final statements, so some of the language may lack clarity. Although the Summit organizers were not involved in the drafting of these statements, we believe that the working group was thinking about volunteers who aren't connected with any affiliate, and that this statement was really meant to protect editors and ensure that the voice of volunteer editors without affiliation is represented on the Global Council. Okay, I guess that makes a kind of sense. I hope first-off that the WMF and its bodies like GC and summit organizers and so on really, actually, deeply understand that the vast majority of editors are not part of these affiliate groups and don't have much interest in them, yet independently do the vast majority of the encyclopedia (and dictionary, and etc.) building work. Secondly, as to the wording, this kind of comes off like missionaries believing they are "bringing civilization to the savages and saving them". We are not "unorganized". Many of us are very organized about what we do, including in groups, but generally organized online and about getting the work done (wikiprojects, etc.). We're just not involved in meatspace get-togethers, nor interested in the irrational hominid politicking and bikeshedding those are almost certainly going to involve. Many of us can see the value in things like editathons and other meetups that get actual work done, of course. But if WMF is under the impression that the way forward for WMF and its editorial community is to "organize" everyone into chapters or other affiliates on a regional or language-division basis, they are deeply mistaken. I don't need to belabour the point at any further length, but it seems to need to be made briefly, given some of what I've seen in memoranda and planning documents and other material from WMF and its bodies over the last few years.  — SMcCandlish ☺ ☏ ¢ >^ʌⱷ҅_ᴥⱷ^ʌ<  11:08, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
