Add topicInterest to join the Steering committee
[edit]- I am interested in joining the steering committee and I have been working on language diversity in both my personal and professional capacities. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 13:52, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- Forgot to reply here, but you have been added. Thanks for the interest! Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 11:35, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
Hi! Do you still need some help in the steering committee? If yes, I am interested. --K2suvi (talk) 19:00, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @K2suvi, sorry for taking so long to reply here! In the previous steering committee meeting, we decided to open it up for observer members as well – are you still interested? If so, we can bring that up in the next meeting, and I don't foresee any problems. Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 14:00, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby (WMNO): Ping! I'm interested. I'm the lead editor / coordinator for LinguaLibre. So much to do on this diversity front. After spending years on setting up, keeping up, reorienting Lili, I would like to connect with other initiatives and be an observing member of this Language Diversity Hub. Non-English based Programming languages
[edit]I am interested in programming. The most keywords in programming languages are based on the english language. There are some programming languages based on other script or language used for the keywords. Examples are listed in the article linked English Wikipedia article in the sentence before. From my point view there is at the moment a big presence of English in Computer science. Do you have experience with Non-English-Based programming languages and what do you think about the current situation. Does the language barrier exclude people from programming or make it more difficult. From my point of view it is interesting to discuss that to make Wikifunctions what is maybe the basis for Abstract Wikipedia an inclusive project and lower the barriers and there especially the language barriers for making contributions. Spreadsheetfunctions are translated into many languages and are additional to visual programming languages like Scratch the examples where Multilanguage support is a standard. Please tell me if you think that the current situation is acceptable or if you wish that something changes. Hogü-456 (talk) 20:58, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Mali Brødreskift (WMNO) What do you think about that. Is the Language Diversity Hub focused on natural languages or is it also about Programming languages. There is a new project page about other multilingual concepts of programming. Hogü-456 (talk) 21:24, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Hogü-456! thanks for sharing about this! it has not been a topic for discussion yet in the Hub. I do believe this is a barrier that has not been talked enough about, and I am happy to bring this topic up in the next meeting. Maybe you would be itneresting in presenting the project there? [edit]- How to recruit native speakers for a small language Wikipedia : Learning from the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group approach Yug (talk) 13:40, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
- This project is great! I think all of the langauges we have interviewed are looking for more ways to grow the community. I can already think of a few languages where it would be fun to try. The importance here is to have a good way of following up and giving courses to the ones registering. That is where I can see the Langauge hub - maybe with some input from the Yoruba community - can give support! Thanks for sharing it here! Mali Brødreskift (WMNO) (talk) 09:12, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
Program ?
[edit]@Mali Brødreskift (WMNO), Jon Harald Søby (WMNO), Astrid Carlsen (WMNO), and Amqui: thank a lot for pushing forward with yesterday visio-conference. I still consider myself an observer, but I would like help around, first with my on-wiki project organization skills. One of the first thing to do as a "hub" seems to me to be the following :
- Identify some on-wiki organisators → consolidating the meta pages for the hub, via major and minor edits (WikiOgre,WikiGnome)
- From the edits I saw: Jon (WMNO), I'm in (Yug). Maybe Amqui and Astrid Carlsen as well if relatively free this year (?).
- Note: a good part have already been done thank to those 3 users (mostly Jon !)
- To map existing wikimedia projects and communities → collaboratively expand {{Wikimedia Language Diversity/Projects}}
- Map LDH's active editors and their "roles" → for what are they the reference contact point. {{Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub/Interested parties}} and Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub/Steering committee
- Map time via upcoming deadlines, "events", milestones → {{Wikimedia Language Diversity/Program}}
- Pick a forum page → Talk:Wikimedia Language Diversity or Talk:Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub or ... ?
- Remember to keep the place(s) clean, archive outdated noise, etc.
Most is well on track already thanks to the WMNO's team. But I'm interested to exchange lightly with you to ensure my involvement in this general direction is ok. Then I can push forward, cleaning things around, and drafting a {{Wikimedia Language Diversity/Program}} for you to review (mostly a timed list of Wikimedia Hackathons, Celtic knot, Wikimania, etc.). Meet at Wikimania?
[edit]I am on a team evaluating prospects for a North American hub. We are collecting example of practice from other affiliates and hubs. Could I/we meet with any organizers or Steering Committee members of the Language Diversity Hub, at the 2023 Wikimania perhaps, or by video call later? -- econterms (talk) 23:34, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Malikbr (talk) 20:39, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
Nenzit Wikimedians User Group
[edit]Date: 16 December 2024
To: Wikimedia Affiliates and the Global Wikimedia Community
Dear Wikimedia Affiliates and Community Members,
We are excited to announce our intent to form the Nenzit Wikimedians User Group, a new Wikimedia User Group with a focus on expanding Wikimedia outreach to Platoid languages spread across Central (Middle Belt) Nigeria and Northwest Cameroon. This user group aims to promote Wikimedia projects, i.e., contribute to, preserve, and expand free knowledge around the Nenzit region.
- Mission
- Our mission is to create and sustain Wikimedia projects in Platoid languages and promote free knowledge in the Nenzit region through awareness, content creation, and community engagement. We are committed to supporting the Wikimedia movement by organizing activities like in-person and offline events, workshops, edit-a-thons, content creation, and collaborations.
- Focus Area
- Our group will primarily focus on Platoid languages also known as "Central Nigeria" languages, spoken by the Nenzit peoples. Specifically, we will engage with the following:
- Themes: language, culture, geography, history.
- Geographical Region: We are based in Central Nigeria, Northwest Cameroon, and Alibori and Borgu departments of the Republic of Benin and plan to extend our activities within this area, fostering connections with local communities and institutions.
- Current Location and Regional Activities
- Our group is currently located in Kafanchan, Nigeria, and we aim to collaborate with local affiliates and communities across the Nenzit region to ensure widespread participation and representation in our activities. We plan to collaborate with language departments teaching any of these languages and language development boards to foster collaborations, as well as participate in conferences organized by Wikimedia, its affiliates, individuals, and other bodies, with common goals and improve Wikimedia presence across the region.
- Call for Collaboration
- We welcome collaboration and support from other affiliates and individuals across the Wikimedia movement. We believe that working together with other user groups and affiliates will enhance our efforts and strengthen the global Wikimedia ecosystem.
If you would like to learn more about our user group, share feedback, or explore opportunities to collaborate, feel free to contact us on our talk page. We look forward to contributing to the Wikimedia movement and making a meaningful impact through our activities.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Kambai (for the proposed Nenzit Wikimedians UG) -- Kambai Akau (talk) 17:51, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
