100 article limit

[edit]

As Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Participants says there will be a strict 100 article limit, I think we will have a problem of having lists that are both representative and useful for all communities. Let's take an example of Belarusian culture: Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Structure/Belarus/Culture where we have:

  • Well-known topics like Marc Chagall, but covered in most wikis. We may want to include them, as wikis with poor coverage of Belarusian culture (like Bosnian or Albanian, or communities from outside CEE) should start with Chagall and not with less important subjects.
  • More obscure topics like w:Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya that have red links in most wikis. More wikis will benefit from including such topics due to greater potential, but they are bad starting points (it would be weird if a wiki will have an article about Byalynitsky-Birulya but not about Chagall).

Thus is it possible to make some guidelines that will make lists useful for all participating communities? For example, I can suggest the following:

  • at least 50 out of 100 articles should be present in less than half of participating languages, to make sure that there are enough gaps for large communities
  • an extra list of up to 50 'vital' articles (beyond 100 article limit) with articles in at least 75% of CEE languages, to make sure that small and non-CEE communities can cover the key topics

Thanks — NickK (talk) 19:04, 16 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nick - yes, we still have to set up guidelines for choosing articles - the most obvious choices would be articles that have well-written articles on English Wikipedia and hardly any translations in other Wikipedias. That way participants are more likely to start writing about a topic.
The vital articles sound interesting, the only question being if those vital articles really are missing in small language communities. Probably depends on who wants to participate, maybe I'm not thinking globally enough ;-) Braveheart (talk) 09:24, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart: Thank you for your answer. I have read and heard discussions that CEE Spring will be open to non-CEE communities this year, in the same way as Wikimedia Asian Month. If this is the case, we are likely to have communities with very limited coverage of CEE topics. I am not sure if I understand correctly, so please clarify if this is not the case. Thanks — NickK (talk) 14:36, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@NickK: - essentially, yes. Should we limit this bonus list to articles that exist in every CEE country? The essentials basically ;-) Braveheart (talk) 23:47, 17 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart: Not sure we will have many of those. Taking again Belarus as an example, even Adam Mickiewicz, Belarusian ruble, flag of Belarus or Svetlana Aleksievich do not exist in all wikis, and Alexander Lukashenko got the last interwiki that was lacking only during CEE Spring 2016. Of course you may feel free to come up with whatever other criterion you like — NickK (talk) 08:17, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we will open the contest to non-CEE-communities, which are willing to write about CEE. I would recommend local organisers to add a mixture of articles to the list - main articles like "Geography of __COUNTRY__", which can be used by small communities to fill in huge gaps and by larger communities to create excellent articles during the contest, and specific articles "__IMPORTANT PERSON/NATURE RESERVE/etc. FROM THE COUNTRY__" in order to let larger communities create new articles. --Nikola (talk) 08:34, 18 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
The discussion has not been very active. Limiting lists to 100 (10 topics by 10 categories) will affect some previous organizers very noticeably. However I have seen no significant objections. Does this mean everyone agrees? We (Latvians) have another problem — it is impossible to pick a topic which has decent English article, but lacks Russian one (due to large Russian minority here), meaning there will be noting of interest for Russian users to write about. --Papuass (talk) 15:22, 23 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hm... I'm sure this probably varies from language to language, but how would Russian users translate articles about Latvia? Are you specifically targeting users who can translate from Latvian to Russian? Braveheart (talk) 08:26, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
You misunderstood. Most Latvian topics are well covered in Russian language (neighboring country, lots of Latvians with Russian knowledge). My guess it could be same problem with Czechia/Slovakia. --Papuass (talk) 10:32, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, yes, that makes a lot more sense. I think there are certain close relationships that make it difficult to create completely new articles (the same problem applies to Austria and the Czech Republic for example). Would a special prize for focussing on improving articles in Russian about Latvia be a viable option? Braveheart (talk) 12:49, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think the most effective will be creating articles in English, because articles, which don't have English IW, will not be translated mostly in another languages. See Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Structure/Belarus/Culture. --Artificial123 (talk) 13:47, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

I can agree, but we have limited time and Wikipedian resources for that. I can work on several English articles myself, but not 100. --Papuass (talk) 14:20, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Serbia - ~195 articles, Croatia - ~135. --Чаховіч Уладзіслаў (talk) 11:58, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Why in Belarus should be a hundred articles? Why not [articles]? --Чаховіч Уладзіслаў (talk) 15:27, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
The local organisers with lists that have more than 100 articles are being notified, you should see some changes in the next few days :-) Braveheart (talk) 09:35, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Quoting myself from Braveheart's talk page: Please note that the timeline for the countries isn't mandatory and/or some contestants may have already started working on articles about, say, Armenia (=huge list) which is at the end of May. Changing the lists now would leave them in uncertainty and waste any preparatory research or writing/translation they have already done. Moreover there isn't a real reason to shorten the lists, since a) the inernational organizers are fine with >100 article lists and b) really good, long articles for the contest are becoming a little hard to find, even on the longer lists. So it's better not to have any more changes to the lists now. Let's see if we want different/unlimited lists for next year, but for now let's stick with what we've got for the sake of the participants - Badseed (talk) 00:37, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I support the keeping of the articles if they exceed 100 per country. However some lists are too long. It is hard to handle them. There are several hundred articles in Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Russian Federation and I didn't notice the article about ru:Петржак, Константин Антонович. There is one more thing: Module:WikimediaCEETable can't handle more than 400 articles per 1 page. So when there are too many articles not all of them are shown in the list. Some sections are shown, the other show an error: "Too many Wikidata entities accessed". In future this feature can be used to limit the number of articles. --Jarash (talk) 10:33, 19 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Translations

[edit]

Can someone prepare the page/pages for translation? I guess a translation admin is needed, so perhaps User:Ата? Thanks! - Badseed (talk) 01:48, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Does it really need to be translated? If so, I'll mark it soon --Ата (talk) 09:33, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
No, it need not be translated. These pages are for the international organisers and all of them know English well and will create local contest pages in their languages. --Nikola (talk) 22:21, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Last year's were. It's not really necessary, at least not now, I mainly asked because perhaps it will be useful for local users that want to know more about the contest or its organizing, but I may as well replenish the content locally. Cheers! - Badseed (talk) 00:14, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, last year's were, but it was a waste of time. --Nikola (talk) 09:23, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
Non-English speaking people generally deserve the right to understand what the pages are about, even if the conclusion would be that they realise that the page has nothing to do with them. --Base (talk) 16:56, 26 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Lithuania

[edit]

Greetings. I'm a bit late, but add Lithuania (Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Lithuania), please. We are participating too. Hugo.arg (talk) 16:46, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

It is never late to participate at CEE Spring, Hugo.arg. Welcome! --Никола (talk) 16:53, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Contest statistics

[edit]

Hello colleagues. Will it be possible to see the general statistics of the contest online, as it was last year? If it already exists, give the link. JukoFF (talk) 07:47, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. My stats will appear today or tomorrow. No idea about Botik. --Base (talk) 12:05, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Request. When Statistics is working, share the link :) JukoFF (talk) 15:19, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Europeana/1914-18

[edit]

Hi: Will there be a "Europeana/1914-18" part this year? --Balabinrm (talk) 16:09, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Balabinrm: The Romanian community included some articles on this topic in their list, see Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Romanian#k. 1914-18. --Gikü (talk) 12:23, 27 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
We also prepared a special prize for the user with most articles written on this topic, per Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Rules#Romanian. --Gikü (talk) 12:29, 27 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Great! Thank you. --Balabinrm (talk) 10:52, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi: It seems that not a great number of WWI articles is available this year. Could I suggest some addition for Turkey, for example?

Thank you in advance. --Balabinrm (talk) 16:11, 15 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Balabinrm: Sorry, how can I help you? I'm not organising this event... Le Loy 00:21, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry then for a ping... I thought, that you "have power" ) --Balabinrm (talk) 00:23, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
You'll have to ask your national organiser - User:Basak, but I don't see what would speak against adding a Europeana section to your list. Keep in mind though that the Europeana challenge is a competition for Wikimedia affiliates, not a individual contest (if I'm not mistaken). Braveheart (talk) 08:37, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! @Basak: --Balabinrm (talk) 10:24, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Balabinrm: Hi Balabinrm! Are you suggesting adding "1914-1918" section to CEE Spring Article List of Turkey ? Sure, that would be possible, if it is not a problem to go over 100 articles. We can work on a 1914-1918 list next week. And thank you for the suggestions!--Basak (talk) 17:42, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it seems to be that 100 is more a "benchmark" (see Russia, for example). Great, thank you! --Balabinrm (talk) 18:18, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Europeana/1914-18 section has been added!--Basak (talk) 18:06, 24 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! ) --Balabinrm (talk) 20:52, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Are article lists final?

[edit]

Hi! I would like to know which article lists are final and which are still not? It was announced that local lists should have exactly 100 articles, but only few teams seem to respect this guideline:

  • Exactly 100: Austria, Bulgaria, Crimean Tatar, Latvia, Romanian, Ukraine
  • Small deviation: Turkey (102), Belarus (101, with 1 added by a foreign user), Esperanto (98), Georgia (98), Kosovo (95)
  • Significantly less than 100: Slovakia (58), Albania (80), Lithuania (88), Poland (89), Erzya (90)
  • Significantly more than 100: Croatia (121), Azerbaijan (126), Hungary (131), Greece (136), Bashkortostan (150), Macedonia (168), Kazakhstan (171), Serbia (181)
  • Way more than 100: R. Sprska (212), Armenia (302), Estonia (361), Russia (476).

I ask this because last year we translated all labels into Ukrainian to create lists of red/blue links (like uk:Вікіпедія:CEE Spring 2016/Список статей до створення/Сербія), but I don't think that it is worth investing time in translating 476 Russian labels if only 100 will be ultimately kept. Thus I think it would be useful to mark lists that are final and those that are not — NickK (talk) 13:49, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Have you considered translating labels in Wikidata? You can then use some coding magic and show these translated labels in ukwiki. This way it is better use of time and translated labels benefit Wikidata. --Papuass (talk) 09:58, 30 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Papuass, It is exactly about labels at Wikidata. --Base (talk) 12:01, 30 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've chosen exactly 100. Isn't 101 a problem? --Artificial123 (talk) 10:50, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Artificial123: We've also discussed this topic at the Wikimedia Conference and I'm starting to understand where the lists came from - they were originally intended to inspire editors to write articles on a certain subject in a country. The list should ideally contain 100 articles, but it's not mandatory. Hope that helps. Braveheart (talk) 12:17, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Article lists for 2018

[edit]

Hi! Do I understand it correctly that a group of users does not have to be an official member of Wikimedia CEE in order to provide a list of articles (Bashkir and Erzya groups aren't listed at Wikimedia Central and Eastern Europe)? I'm thinking about offering the Chechnya project in Russian Wikipeduia and Chechen-language Wikipedia edition users to compose their own list of articles for the CEE-2018 (Chechnya project is fairly active and they have just composed a list of famous Chechnya topics for a weekly contest). Where can I see the requirements for the lists? And where do groups of users submit their lists? Le Loy 02:26, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Ле Лой: Yes, every language with it's own Wikipedia is also welcome, as long as it is in Central or Eastern Europe (including the somewhat murky border areas of the region). The tasks for local organisers can be found at Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Participants#Duties - the lists are created similar to Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Lithuania - in your case that would be Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Chechnya. The tables are fed with Wikidata items. Braveheart (talk) 08:52, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart:, thank you very much! Le Loy 09:01, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Poland

[edit]

How can I add kazakh language to this table?--Kaiyr (talk) 12:58, 9 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Kaiyr: - the table can be edited via Module:WikimediaCEETable. I've added Kazakh to the list, it should show up now. Braveheart (talk) 08:52, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Botik stats

[edit]

I've just reanimated Botik, and now it again process statistics by languages and countries in good old way. See Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Structure/Statistics. Unfortunately, I can not develop this machinery now. So we hope for future progress of User:BaseBot/CEES/MMXVII. --Alexander Sigachov (talk) 14:44, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Europeana/1914-18 for Poland

[edit]

Dear @Magalia: It seems to be that Poland currently has below 100 articles. Could I suggest an addition of "Europeana/1914-18" section?

Best regards. --Balabinrm (talk) 18:38, 23 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Jarash: @Aegis Maelstrom: @Natalia Szafran-Kozakowska (WMPL): @Nostrix: --Balabinrm (talk) 18:09, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think that there is no need to add these articles. The week of Poland ended on May 1. --Jarash (talk) 18:41, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, that is a pitty ( "Russian spring" is still on - till 31 May. --Balabinrm (talk) 20:30, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Icons

[edit]

Is there any graphic masters? It would be nice if all icons in tables of articles (like this one) were similar. There is no icon no Bashkirian, Esperanto and Serbo-Croatian languages. Also Erzya has rectangular shape. Thank you. --Artificial123 (talk) 11:28, 4 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Europeana/1914-18 for Albania

Dear @Margott: It seems to be that Albania currently has below 100 articles. Could I suggest an addition of "Europeana/1914-18" section?

UNESCO Challenge

[edit]

I've got message on twitter from CEE Spring: "During #CEESpring write about CEE UNESCO World Heritage sites and submit them to an additional article contest". I like this idea and I will do it for Croatia. UNESCO Challenge is happening right now at the same time as CEE Spring so we can contribute at both projects at the same time.--Fraxinus (talk) 20:05, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that's the idea. There's also a CEE Spring post on facebook I believe :-) Braveheart (talk) 12:45, 12 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Removal of articles for writing a dictionary during the contest

[edit]

A big request to the Romanian colleagues, do not cross out some articles from the list. The authors have already written articles on the designated topics within the framework of the contest, and now I do not understand whether the finished articles will go to the final test. JukoFF (talk) 15:57, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Mitigated at User talk:Gikü#Корректировка списка статей для написания в рамках Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017. We had set up the list based on consensus of Romanian community, and I only removed items which were added afterwards without discussion. Will make sure to revert faster if this happens again. Thanks. --Gikü (talk) 22:37, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tatarstan

[edit]

Hi! What do you think about adding Tatarstan at the end of the contest. This is first time CEE Spring in Tatar language. --Visem (talk) 21:58, 21 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Why not? I'll translate a couple of articles from Russian into Belarusian. --Jarash (talk) 20:03, 22 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dear organizers, I add Tatarstan to the Article list Template, please find the best way to put it into the timeline. --Visem (talk) 20:12, 22 May 2017 (UTC) Welcome to CEE Spring! --Fraxinus (talk) 14:58, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Frhdkazan: will you support the idea? --15:12, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Visem: - Ok, this is mighty late, but we'll promote it in this week's blog :-) Best, Braveheart (talk) 19:27, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you. --Visem (talk) 19:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Will there be awards?

Yes, for the special prizes on international level and in each community that took part in the contest :-) Braveheart (talk) 15:58, 19 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Braveheart, and in Bulgaria?
User:Vodnokon4e is the local organiser there, he should be able to tell you when and where :-) Braveheart (talk) 16:55, 19 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

User:Vodnokon4e?

Sorry, I forgot to put my reply here - mass message was delivered to all the participants' talk pages with details.--Vodnokon4e (talk) 12:22, 3 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Results?

[edit]

Until now, there are no results of the contest in the Ukrainian Wikipedia. Why? 45.114.116.192 10:02, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

There are results in the statistics section, but we're currently working on making the stats more reliable. Braveheart (talk) 10:31, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart: No, you did not understand. There are still no results (who is the winner) in the Ukrainian Wikipedia. That is, the results (points) are not summed up, etc. uk:Вікіпедія:CEE Spring 2017/Переможці. All other Wikipedia’s have already evaluated and summed up the results. And in the Ukrainian Wikipedia for more than 3 months nothing happens 45.114.116.192 11:42, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry! That's a question that User:Nickispeaki should be able to answer, sorry for the delay! Braveheart (talk) 12:04, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Thanks. 45.114.116.192 12:07, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi, guys! As you can see here - Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017 and Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/uk, Ata and Base are the International organisers from Ukraine. I ping them. @Ата and Base: Sorry, but for now I can do only this. Braveheart - why did you ask me for answer? --Nickispeaki (talk) 12:19, 29 August 2017 (UTC) Sorry! It's my fault too. I am in local organisers too (See Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017/Participants), but stopped mythelf activity in it... Thank you for your attention.--Nickispeaki (talk) 12:28, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nickispeaki: I'm very sorry that you stopped your activity. Maybe then such questions would not have appeared. It seems to me that Ata and Base did not cope with duties 45.114.116.192 12:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
No - the international team is usually not directly involved in the activities of local organisers, for various reasons. The team can offer to help if problems like this one here arise, though. ;-) Braveheart (talk) 14:50, 29 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Pavlo1, I assume? I have asked other local organisers to help with a current blocker besides the assessment itself, you may be bold and collaborate to help. It is more constructive than violation of NOP anyway. As to the situation in general, it is mostly my fault not providing article lists for assessment in adequate manner time wise. There are other issues contributing to it though, our organising committees are less efficient now than they used to be. Base (talk) 17:26, 30 August 2017‎ (UTC)Reply

As I see, we have a lot of articles in uk-wiki. About 1,500. For now (30 of August) we have only one table (list) with 525 articles. It's only first week. We need to rate at least 1,000 articles. As Base told jury didn't rate articles because they didn't have the list of articles. @Base: Can you, please, make a list of articles? Rest of all? --Nickispeaki (talk) 18:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Nickispeaki, there was more than 1 week the contest lasted, so there are more subpages: uk:Категорія:Вікіпроект:CEE Spring 2017. --Base (talk) 19:03, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
O! Yes! Thank you! But the first list has a lot of unrated artiles! From all of jury. ;-0 ;-( And other - at least 7, 8, ... what about 10 and 11?--Nickispeaki (talk) 19:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, I know I am a member of the organising committee. I cannot work on CEE Spring right at this moment but I am following it and I know the jury is working now. @Nickispeaki: Currently help is needed to split articles between Education and Science, can you please do it? (Потрібно розділити окремо категорії освіти й науки, які були змішані докупи, зможеш, будь ласка, це зробити?) — NickK (talk) 21:05, 30 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Braveheart: A month has passed... Nothing happened... The problem remains: no results.... Probably the local organizer still needs help? And maybe international team will help them? 45.114.116.192 07:41, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Base: If you can not cope with the work of the organizer you need ask for help from an international team! Today is the 22nd of September. When the competition ended? 45.114.116.192 07:58, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Pavlo1, do you really not have anything better to do? The problem is that the person on the international team who is the most likely to be of use is Base, but he happens to be myself. On the other hand, explaining someone else what needs to be done is the task of the scale of actually doing it. Which I might resolve to rather sooner than later because although I know what needs to be done I am not sure I am capable to do it. Looking for a bug is rather nasty a job. --Base (talk) 08:59, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Base: Instead of performing your duties as an organizer now, you are constantly making excuses. It seems that you are the only person in the world who can do something ... Furthermore, all may seem that If not you, then there would not be a competition... But you did not do anything for 4 months. And now you do nothing. Therefore I suggest contact the organizer of other Wikipedia for help. They will help! From the moment that I wrote (29.08.2017) that you did personally? You will write this every month until the next CEE Spring 2018 or no? P.S.You confuse me with someone. I'm not Pavlo1. I do not even know who that is! 45.114.116.192 10:14, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
You seem to know the duties well, since the contest is not yet finalised it is not too late to join the team. No, I am not the only one, my bot is open-source and anybody can contribute, including you. In practice, though you prefer keeping me busy responding you. It takes time, and though I appreciate your concern it is not helpful. Of course there would be the competition without me. I do not enjoy the position I am in and I do not want to create an impression that I am in any way a more important part of the whole thing than the others are. As you can see is is exactly the opposite, without me everything would go smoother. You are free to invite other people to help, you seem to know whom to ask better than me so I would rather leave that to you if you please. Sorry, but I am not going to report to you what I did or did not. Perhaps you are not him, it is insubstantial, though I would prefer talking to a logged in user, I feel unsafe being regularly disturbed by someone withholding their wiki identity. --Base (talk) 10:42, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Base: First, the competition has already been finalised and only the Ukrainian Wikipedia did not sum up. Secondly, if you do not want to answer me "what did you do?" - why then write this now? Thirdly, I raised this issue, because I am interested in the fact that the results were announced in time. But there are still no results. I can not help you because I am a participant of this contest. I can only advise you, as an organizer, to turn to other people for help if you are incapable. And as you can see from the contest conditions - you were not able to sum up the results until July 31. Today September 22. Participants write articles. Jury evaluate them.. Organizers - organize. Let's each fulfill their duties! 45.114.116.192 11:12, 22 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Again - you'll need to ask the Ukranian organisers. We're still working on the stats, but since everyone's busy this will take time. Sorry for the inconvenience. Braveheart (talk) 08:45, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory - project in line with CEE Spring

[edit]

Hello everyone,

My name is Marc Miquel and I am a researcher from Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra).

While I was doing my PhD I studied whether an identity-based motivation could be important for editor participation and I analyzed content representing the editors' cultural context in 40 Wikipedia language editions.

Few months later, I propose creating the Wikipedia Cultural Diversity Observatory in order to raise awareness on Wikipedia’s current state of cultural diversity, providing datasets, visualizations and statistics, and pointing out solutions to improve intercultural coverage

I am presenting this project to a grant and I expect that the site becomes a useful tool to help communities create more multicultural encyclopaedias and bridge the content culture gap that exists across language editions.

Here is the link of the project proposal: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Wikipedia_Cultural_Diversity_Observatory_(WCDO)

I expect this project to help CEE Spring finding some specific culture gaps to fill by the participants.

I am searching for a volunteer in each language community. If you feel like it, you can contact me at: marcmiquel *at* gmail.com

I need a contact in your every community who can (1) check the quality of the cultural context article list I generate to be imported-exported to other language editions, (2) test the interface/data visualizations in their language, and (3) communicate the existance of the tool/site when ready to the language community and especially to those editors involved in projects which could use it or be aligned with it.

Communicating it might not be a lot of work, but it will surely have a greater impact if done in native language! :). If you like the project, I'd ask you to endorse it. In any case, I will appreciate any feedback, comments,... Thanks in advance for your time!

Best regards,

@Marcmiquel: Hi Marc! First off, your proposal is really interesting and certainly would help establishing a framework to measure these kind of gaps on different Wikipedias. On important aspect which would make it useful for CEE Spring is the fact that the cultural gap articles to be written need to have an English version. Would this be difficult to implement? It doesn't make a lot of sense to suggest articles to editors that are written in Hungarian only. Best, Braveheart (talk) 19:47, 8 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your kind words. :) I am not sure to get your point totally. You mean that you use English as a bridge language to understand what articles from other languages are about. However, this is not necessarily the only possibility. You could use the Content Translation tool and you could look for equivalent sources to extend or adapt the article to your language. I am going to provide lists of articles for each Wikipedia that *deserve* being translated to others (or at least, that the concept should exist and be developed). However, I could *highlight* somehow which of the list do exist in English, if that makes editors work more agile, of course :). Thanks for the feedback, I think CEE Spring is a wonderful iniative that I hope to contribute to the most. Let's keep talking. --Marcmiquel (talk) 13:08, 9 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
This is the reality — there is no common language in CEE region and English is closest to that. Russian does not come close. Translation services are awful when used in smaller languages. --Papuass (talk) 21:38, 9 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the tool would only be helpful when highlighting articles in English. :-) It's all fine and well when you list articles which "deserve" to be translated, but without the proper pre-requisites it won't help much :-( P.S.: It would be cool to see Catalan taking part in CEE Spring next year as an external community (i.e. writing articles but not contributing a list of its own) :-) Braveheart (talk) 22:51, 10 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I take note about the English point. In regards of the Catalan in CEE Spring, it would be cool. I am going to ping the Catalan Wikipedia chapter leader and tell him about it :) --Marcmiquel (talk) 17:10, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

CEE Spring 2017 Ukraine

[edit]

It's already the middle of October, and there are still no results in the Ukrainian Wikipedia. Why? 173.209.57.244 18:42, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Again, please ask WMUA. This has been mentioned a few sections above this one already. Braveheart (talk) 21:22, 15 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
We have a problem with a calculation. Base told about it higher in a previous topic.--Nickispeaki (talk) 03:29, 16 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
There was a problem with calculation of results (basically points given to users in some cases were completely wrong). This problem was resolved a few days ago, the jury is now making the final check of points, and results will be available in a few days — NickK (talk) 10:19, 19 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
