Feedback on Draft Agenda by July 25

[edit]

Help us create a workshop that works on what you want. Please provide your feedback on the following by Thursday, July 25:

  1. Which topic would you prioritize for us to discuss together as a group? (a) Child safety (b) promoting a healthy information environment and freedom of expression (c) something else.
  2. Tell us what do you think about the proposed agenda: is there something that is missing, or do you see something that you put more focus on?
  3. Write 1-2 steps that you'd want to be involved in after this meeting to continue the collaboration of this network

1. Personally, I would be more interested in (b), especially in how the Wikipedia model can serve as a bulwark against disinformation on the internet and how this narrative can be packaged and sold to decision makers.
2. The agenda seems well-rounded. Starting with a skill development seems reasonable to build an equitable foundation, and the subsequent activities make sense. For now, I'm particularly curious how Activity 2 will allow us to put our newly built expertise to the test.
3. a) I'd be keen to be part of an engaged mailing list or signal group.
b) I would also like to learn more about other use cases, like disinformation, digital public infrastruture, AI, copyright law, etc. and what strategies and narratives folks have used to make progress. Jan-David Franke (WMDE) (talk) 09:39, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Jan-David Franke (WMDE) thanks so much for the feedback. You brought up some great points so I'd like to address them:
1+2: We've gone with (a) and feel comfortable doing so in part because it will also allow us to touch on topics like how important the Wikipedia model is for things like media literacy and therefore to combat disinformation. The activities are also designed to ensure the skills from the stakeholder profile sections are applied, and I hope, in a fun way!
3a: You're on the public policy mailing list (albeit the list is not too active) and I'm working to add you to the Telegram group.
3b: This workshop won't be diving into multiple use cases because we've done that in the past. We therefore wanted to narrow down on very specific skills and topic challenges that we know many of us are trying to nurture or address. That said, there's multiple ways to learn more about other use cases (though perhaps we can improve how one might access this information in one place). They are...
  1. Attend the Common(s) Causes day zero event from 14:30 onwards that our allies are running. The afternoon portion of that event is designed to discuss key campaigns and topics like principles for regulating AI for the Commons, an agenda for digital public goods, a Digital Knowledge Act for Europe, Green Technology and Open Climate, with allies.
  2. Come to this Wikimania session: "Policy Advocacy Showcase: Stories of policy advocacy work in the movement and future trends" on August 7, at 11:00 am in room 7. Wikimedians from NWE, CEE and LAC will share some strategies they've used to make progress on topics like disinformation, open knowledge for science/research, and more.
  3. Monitor our Don't Blink monthly recaps on Diff, our quarterly newsletter, and our resources page on Meta-Wiki to see how positions develop and what content we & Wikimedians create on these core topics.
