Question about the description in the reward section

[edit]

Hello, I'm currently translating description into Japanese. I noticed that in the Rules and Rewards section, it says:

> The top 10 contributors will get a certificate for participation from UN Human Rights and the Wikimedia Foundation.

I assume that the word "council" is missing after the "UN Human Rights". Is this a typo?

Thanks --TAKAHASHI Shuuji (talk) 03:04, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@TAKAHASHI Shuuji Hi! So the certificate is not from the Council, but for the professional office supporting the council: https://www.ohchr.org/en/ohchr_homepage -- They go by both Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights or UN Human Rights. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:43, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
I understand. Thanks for making me clear. TAKAHASHI Shuuji (talk) 23:07, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

does trying to get an article to good article status count?

[edit]

Hello, I am interested in working on an existing article and trying to get it to good article status. This doesn't involve adding a new section, though it may involve re-arranging and copy editing existing sections. Can I participate in this challenge with this project? Thanks 76.14.37.32 04:44, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi! So we don't have extra points for those kinds of improvements, but that kind of improvement should be covered by
  • 1 point: for every 2000 bytes of additional content added to an article that includes at least one reference per 2000 bytes to a topic in scope whether through translation, expanding articles or article creation
  • 1/2 point: For every two existing photos from Wikimedia Commons on another Wikimedia project with a well written caption
I am assuming improving an existing article, includes activities like those two. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:46, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be great if changes were counted too, so the bytes don't have to be additional. And deletions should count as well if someone is cleaning up an article. I'll do my edits as I had planned, and if it ends up being no points, that's OK. It'll still be fun to participate :) Ruthgrace (talk) 19:24, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Ruthgrace totally! The prizes and points are kindof a bonus that some folks find motivating, and we really are designing the campaign outputs around expanding coverage in different language Wikipedias or adding a human perspective to the environmental crises. Missing word?

[edit]

In the section about Commons, a word seems to be missing between "using" and "on" in "For every two new photos that you upload using on a Wikimedia project with a well written caption". PamD (talk) 10:34, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@PamD Good catch, tweaked, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 13:52, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Few questions

[edit]

1) Since the theme is on environmental issues, will the edits on topics like activism against racism not be counted?

Try to focus on the overlap of racism and environmental injustice: (see en:Environmental racism, or en:Environmental justice or en:Climate justice or Indigenous land rights) -- we welcome folks contributing on other human rights topics (use the hashtag) -- remember too you could always add a human rights perspective that describes the overlap of the two topics, in different parts of an article. I.e. expanding an article about an informal settlement, marginalized community, mining locations that both violate racial and environmental rights etc.

2) Are we supposed to include #WikiForHumanRights in every edit summary? Like, if we expand an article paragraph-by-paragraph, are we supposed to include it in all of the edit summaries, or only including it in the last or the first edit will do?

It doesn't need to be every edit summary, but at least one per page you edit: it helps us quantify # of articles and # of languages effected. These kinds of tracking approaches are never perfect, and the points still need to be manually recorded.

3) I use two accounts: one for specifically editing Hindi Wiki, and this one for all the other Wikis. Should I list my both accounts in the participants' section?

As long as the account is publicly identified as connected, we are happy to count those as one contributor.

Thanks in advance. Lightbluerain (Talk | contribs) 17:35, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Stop activist takeover, it's the end of any project.

[edit]

WP organises knowledge, Amnesty International and others fight for human rights (or so they claim at least). No need to mix things up, no need to add another bureaucratic layer that suffocates real work, there's too much politicising as it is anyway. --Tickle me (talk) 04:30, 14 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Tickle me we are focusing on topics that appeal to advocates, but encouraging documentation via all the best practices of Wikimedia contribution: community editorial rules, volunteer contributions, etc. To be clear, we are not working with Amnesty, but instead UN organizations to identify high impact topics that have plentiful high quality sources. I am not sure I understand your comment " add another bureaucratic layer that suffocates real work", and recommend you read my diff post explaining why we need to create invitations to other kinds of contributors, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 12:55, 14 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup & Addition?

[edit]

Hello, the topic lists needs cleaning up:

  • Remove duplicate entries
  • List all wikis participants contribute to
  • Provide a way to automatically calculate the points earned?

Just ideas-Eptalon (talk) 12:23, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Eptalon I am not sure what you mean by duplicates, you can contribute to any Wikipedia and we can add more languages to the list table if you want, and there is no easy way to automatically calculate points unfortunately. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 11:56, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

What's happening in Uganda

[edit]

I think we can try to pressurise the Ugandan government to stop torturing political prisoners and arresting in innocent souls for the crimes they haven't committed. We can also use the opposition parties in the run against such injustices of murder, poisoning which are currently happening in Uganda. International ogranisations like the IMF which fund the government should come up with strict measures and put conditions which favour human rights when funding the Ugandan government. Media should also join the fight against human rights violations although media houses in Uganda can't do it because of fear of closure but we can also spear head the campaign on human rights via social justice platforms like Facebook, Twitter and so on. @Astinson (WMF): Question: What measure do we use for the size of the article? Eg the en:United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples I've created is "Wiki text: 2588 B" but "Prose size (text only): 350 B (56 words) "readable prose size" " (much of it is a table). Which figure must be "of at least 2000 bytes"? PamD (talk) 19:33, 16 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Winners

[edit]

Hi all! Apologies for the delay in notifying you of the winners! We were analyzing the campaign, and wanted to make sure that we were able to connect the celebration of your contributions with the larger campaign. We were excited that the whole campaign, including local events, included over 700 contributors and improvements to over 4000 Wikipedia articles -- as well as improvements to Wikidata and Commons.

This year, the top 3 contributors  went to:

The other top contributors who will get a special prize for top Non-UN Languages will be:

Other top 10 contributors who will receive certificates:

We also realized that there was a gray area in the rules for the writing contest, and we wanted to provide an additional special honorable mention for @Achiri Bitamsimli: who recorded 3409.3 Points. They contributed batch improvement to labels in Dagbani for Wikidata items related to biographies of people involved in human rights by doing this in batch with Quickstatement; after spotchecking the Wikidata items, we concluded that most of the labels were an improvement, but not to Wikidata items generally in the scope of the theme of the campaign. They will get a prize equivalent to the Non-UN language Prize of $50 credit to the Wikimedia Store and a certificate.

To claim your prize, please email astinson@wikimedia.org and I will collect your email for coordinate the Wikimedia store prizes and desired name for the certificate. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 15:12, 24 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Clarification on points per article and future evaluation

[edit]

Greetings @Astinson (WMF), I have two questions:

  1. 1 - there are people addings articles in which, for example, only 50% of the article text is supported by sources, and the other 50% has no sources. Will the jury pay attention to this? Or everything counts, even content without sources?
  2. 2 - if I understood well, the maximum points per article we can have is 3 (one bonus, one new article, one 2000 bytes added), but I see people, for example, writing 23 points in a single article. Who's wrong? the 2000 bytes added to a single article counts only once, or if I add 10k bytes, it will count as 5 points?

Thank you, Luís Almeida "Tuga1143 22:17, 11 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Tuga1143 apologies for the delay in response, you caught be out of office last week, and I missed the notification until today.
  1. we are counting the total number of bytes added, and looking for content that is mostly of high quality. If it appears that the content is entirely unsourced, or doesn't appear reliable we may reevaluate giving points for that.
  2. We recently noticed that as well -- yes the max number of points this year should be only 3, and were trying to figure out what happened -- we think it has something to do with the translation of the rules -- where the old calculation method was not translated for all contributors -- even though we marked it for translation. Instead of trying to disrupt folks working in multiple languages, to recalculate the scores for folks that appear to be winners (all of the top 15-20 contributors). Each year we do this with contributors anyway -- because we have noticed that self-calculation, frequently will have gaps or problems.
We will make sure all submissions are scored fairly by the published English language rules -- the more important thing is listing the articles you contribute to.
Cheers, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 01:05, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
