Photos of professions in articles about professions?

Hi! As a personal and very occasional project I've been diversifying photos in articles about professions. Some examples to help clarify what I mean:

• Prime Minister (diff) - moved lead picture of group of exclusively male prime ministers to "history"; replaced with modern photo of gender-balanced (though not geographically/ethnically balanced!) PMs. First images of women PMs in the article. Similar changes in Head of Government (because of availability of US government pictures, these are also more geographically diverse and slightly more ethnically diverse than the Prime Minister photos).
• Lawyer (diff, diff) - added two women (including one African-American woman) to places in the text that were appropriate; replaced infobox photo with a gender-balanced photo. First images of women in the article. Similar change in Barrister. (Not the first!)
• Programmer (diff) - use gender-balanced infobox photo; add textually relevant photo of two women in the body.
• Architect (diff) - add relevant picture of award-winning female architect to "awards" section (first picture of a woman in the article).

These aren't necessarily hugely impactful, but it does look like this handful of edits are seen by about 6-7k views per day.

A few questions:

• My edits above obviously could do better with ethnic/geographic diversity, but Commons (as we know) isn't great on that. Suggestions on how to find images that are more diverse/representative in those dimensions?
• Outside of infoboxes, I've tried to add images that are pretty clearly tied to the text. This means that if the text is not good on representation issues, I've sometimes found it hard to insert representative images. (You can be creative, of course; see what I did in Lawyer as an example.) Suggestions on how to improve that (besides editing the text)? Especially helpful would be links to any enwp essays/guidelines that can help me think through this problem (and justify additions if I'm challenged).
• One trick I've tried to use (as in Prime Minister) is to find pictures of panels at conferences. This can be hard. :/ Any suggestions for using galleries (or other ways of creating composite/group photos) in enwiki in ways that are less ugly and more appropriate to place higher-up in the article?

Finally: I did the edits above over the space of many months. When I realized that this was becoming a theme, I asked Wikipedia Twitter for help and got a list of articles about "professions", sorted by pageviews. I've then edited it down to remove specific roles/titles like "Governor of Florida" in favor of generic professions like "Politician". What's the best way to turn that list (which is long!) into a shared project list or otherwise make it available/useful to this group? I can share the Google Sheets spreadsheet? Other suggestions welcome.

Here's the spreadsheet. The first 400 or so in the first tab are decently edited to remove specific roles/jobs/titles and focus on big picture careers/professions.

Probably somebody with better Wikidata skills than me could extract a better list. These are based on Wikidata queries related to "occupation" (lots of results, poor quality) and "profession" (few results, but higher quality).

So this is probably far from perfect, but the top 250 pages total 5M+ page views/month, so there's a lot of potential impact, I hope. -LuisVilla (talk) 05:03, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Well done! Have you already checked the various photo-gathering initiatives to see if they can help provide some balance? I see many women in commons:Category:Images of people in science from Wiki Science Competition 2017. A gender-themed section could be added to this competition and others (e.g. Europeana's) to find some more. --Nemo 10:13, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Admittedly, I mostly get photos of women from Flickr streams of significant event organisers. There are several Wikimedia initiatives listed at commons:Category:Photography competitions and commons:Category:Photo scavenger hunts though. I've never managed to find a serious list of photo contests, the least promotional I found was Reddit https://redd.it/5wx252 --Nemo 20:26, 6 June 2018 (UTC)
