I'm here from Simple (unification made this one, not me) to ask a favor. Could you guys please support [1] please? There's a request on our main page and I volunteered to ask here. Some mobile users need it. Because it's not supported, they cannot use the simple.m and so they must use the main Simple. That slows their phones. As well as computers under Tor. On Simple I have been making very good edits lately and I wanted to help people. You wouldn't just be helping me. You'd be helping people all over the world. That's why Simple was made, right? So that people could read things in English and have it Simplified for them, so it's not hard. I also kind of unified from En and Simple. I don't use my Simple unified one. It's IanP. Here's a link. [2] No, don't block me. I made the Simple one by accident by visiting this one while I was signed in on Simple. I'll be watching this page for any replies. Ian.bjorn 20:05, 9 March 2011 (UTC)
In the sidemenu the Translations link is not capitalized, as well as the Community drop-down menu button, planet and the Beyond the Web drop down menu. Is this intentional? Kolrok | Msgs © 10:14, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Translations should probably, as well as planet - for beyond the web/community it depends, when I look at it on monobook (my choice of skin), it is *not* capitalised, but if I look at en wiki or commons on monobook, it isn't capitalised whilst it *is* on vector. Therefore, should probably be fixed for the vector skin. The Helpful One 16:30, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Although it seems like User:Cbrown1023 removed capitalisation of the "beyond the web" back in February 2008 - so more than 3 years ago to the date, not sure as to why. The Helpful One 16:33, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Whilst I was looking through the history, I noticed it was customary to update the ** Wikimania 2010|Wikimania-text for each year. Barras removed the 2010 link at the end of the year, presumably as the 2011 page hadn't been created yet. However, now that Wikimania 2011 exists, can an admin update that accordingly too? :) The Helpful One 16:37, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Killiondude updated it[3]. Theo10011 17:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- I requested for some admins on IRC to help fix the capitalisation issues, seems to have been fixed now as well. Thanks for letting us know! :) The Helpful One 17:53, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
I think the World Heritage addition is fine, but the fake play button really ought not be there. That's a mean trick on the user. --MZMcBride 04:44, 1 June 2011 (UTC)
- Copied from tenwiki: - if only Wikimedia wikis had decent video support. ℳono 18:37, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
- Don't see what video support had to do with it. It tricked me too. If you're going to take a screenshot of a video, crop out the playback controls... And in the wiki spirit I've corrected this unfortunate oversight. – Adrignola talk 15:11, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Main Page is semi-protected. Anything would you full protect the main page, including other languages of main page? This will prevent autoconfirmed users to vandalise them. --Kungfu2187 01:19, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- We don't get much vandalism on there. I'd rather we keep things open unless there's a pressing need to close them. Cbrown1023 talk 20:09, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- Finally, someone who gets it. CompuHacker 23:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
- No one did some vandalism before so they deiced it to semi-protect it. -- Mohamed Aden Ighe 03:24, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

I think both should be included on the main page as they are an important aspect of wikimedia projects as a whole. -- とある白い猫 chi? 20:30, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
I propose a templated structure for the main page where the words seen by the user are parameters, this way translating the main page and keeping it up to date would be less of a daunting task while maintaining the same style. Any thoughts? Unless there is serious opposition I will create the template as a subpage (without changing the main page in any shape or form) -- とある白い猫 chi? 20:33, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
Template:Other languages/Main Page
- I went ahead and created three new main pages using the template structure and got them translated with the help of others. The structure is as following:
- Template:Main Page
- Template:Main Page/Intro
- Template:Main Page/World Heritage
- Template:Information thread
- Template:Main Page/Requests
- Template:Main Page/Core issues and collaboration
- Template:Main Page/Community and communication
- Template:Wikimedia Foundation
- Template:Sisterprojects
- -- とある白い猫 chi? 01:38, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- The template thing isn't a bad idea. But the actual main page doesn't use subpages for different languages. See Commons:Portada, for instance. Killiondude 03:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- With the template structure it will :) It will link to the Spanish main page of commons and etc. The most "complete" one currently is the nl version. You can see how it links to the dutch main page on commons. -- とある白い猫 chi? 04:23, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- I do not agree with moving main page titles on meta. My example was to how commons does it. On meta, currently the french use Accueil. I don't think they should use Main Page/fr. Killiondude 04:26, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- It won't be moved. What for example will happen is Main Page/fr be moved to Accueil. The /fr would remain a redirect. It is temporarily there until it is ready. The very idea of this entire thing is to make meta less English-only club. It currently isn't as non-English pages quickly get outdated and become irrelevant.
- I however did notice a disambiguation problem particularly with Portada so ISO codes may work better (somehow) but this is beyond the scope of the current proposal.
- -- とある白い猫 chi? 08:04, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- I actually decided to simply transclude the template. Do you have objections? -- とある白い猫 chi? 00:23, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Actually I find it hard to believe that all this will make translation easier: at least for me the main page is now a lot harder to update and fix; I liked it so much that it was so simple to edit compared to other projects' main pages... And I don't see how translations are actually being managed. As an effect, I see that for instance the Italian main pages is already less up to date than it would be with the previous system (no October news), effectively forcing Italian language users to use the English main page or interface. --Nemo 10:54, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- At least it isn't outdated by several years like other language editions. How is the main page a lot harder to update? You click one edit link to edit individual sections without having any kind of requirement to understand complicated wiki markup or wiki/html tables. If you add a new item to the main page (Template:Main Page/Code) it would show up on every language edition (once the transition is complete) showing people exactly what part is out dated.
- The news section is going to be dealt with later. It will display English if a localized translation does not exist. Italian translation of the news was recently made and before it was completely in English which forced readers to always refer to it in English provided they understand English. Also recurring events like steward elections will not require two translations per year as it will be handled automatically. You are welcome to join the translation efforts.

I have redesigned the news part for your consumption. Above are 12 languages to demonstrate. The borders are there for demonstration purposes only. Only one will show up per language. The magic happens in {{Main Page/WM News}}. Comments before I implement it? -- とある白い猫 chi? 20:52, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Actually I'll implement by being bold :) -- とある白い猫 chi? 21:18, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
