Talk:List of articles every Wikipedia should have/Expanded/People
Add topicA catastrophy
[edit]This list is a catastrophy. 100 "Artists / Architects, visual", 135 "Authors / Poets"? Not much in 5000 years human history. But 120 (!!!) "Actors and Actresses", a medium, that's 120 years old? And then - mostly american or english speaking people. Dinah Shore? Ed Sullivan? (not much people outsite the USA know him, he's not important worldwide!) William Shatner? Deborah Kerr? (I love her, but she's not that important to be listed here) and so on. But at the Artist no Exekias, no Euphronios, no Berlin painter, no Polykletos, no Kresilas, no Lysippos, no Praxiteles, no Scopas, no Phyromachos. There's no Apelles or Polygnotos. What's with Hermogenes or Mnesikles? All in all the ancient art is unbeleavable unterrepresented. Why? It's the fundament of the western culture! But who knows Richard Meier? And I better not start to talk about the mixing of historical periods. The western System with Prehistory - Ancient Times - Middle Ages - Modern Age is only fitting for the western world and it don't fit also for Sub-Sahara Africa, Pre-columbian America or Far East. It's an old view of the world, an collonial view! Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:53, 19 May 2013 (UTC) PS: Same in sports. The people of the english speaking countries are so much more than all the others - it's not realistic. And because this is the list with articles ALL Wikipedias should have: dear US-Americans: no American Footballer or Baseballer. The most of the world is not interested in these sports. And Paul Bunyan also knows nearly nobody outsite the english speaking world. Why "Hänsel and Gretel" are "Mythical and legendary people" but "Snow White" should be a "Fictional/cartoon character" - both comes from Grimms fairy tales. And Homer Simpson don't need an article in every Wikipedia - the main article depending the Simpsons should be enough.
Reggie Williams - are you kidding?GrV (talk) 22:27, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
- I think for this list. If you mention what you want to do and nobody complains bitterly. You can go ahead and make the change. And so far nobody has complained about these changes. They seem fine to me. --MarsRover 07:35, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Sports and olympic people sorted
[edit]I've sorted the sportspeople into their different sports her: User:Santac/sandbox1. If no-one complains I'll change it on this page. --Santac (talk) 06:13, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- Sorting would be a great improvment. Boivie (talk) 08:34, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
Sports and olympic people - notable?
[edit]After having sorted the sportspeople it's hard not to notice the very biased selection. I dont' know much of the american sports but I've tried to set stars on the must hae articles. I hope that thess stars can be used to sort out some of the entries. I want to sort them out in order to add some athletes. Since i don't know much about the american sports I would prefer if someone else sorted them out. e.g. Figure skating: remoce 90%, Baseball: remove 50%, Basketball: remove 50%. --Santac (talk) 06:26, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's hard to know what sports are important on a global level. But I'll make a guess, and say that Baseball is the most overrepresented sport in the list, and that it could be reduced by 60%. Then I would think American football, Basketball, Figureskating and Tennis each could be reduced by 30%. I think Soccer is the sport that would need the biggest increase, being the #1 or #2 sport in basically all countries around the world except the US and Canada. I also would add some to Motorsports. Like you, I wouldn't know which specific persons to remove, and if noone else are willing to sort them out, there's always a possibility to use some kind of statistics, like the size of the articles at enwiki, or the number of languages who has an article. Boivie (talk) 08:58, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- Now I checked the list at enwiki, en:Wikipedia:Vital_articles/Expanded/People#Sports figures, 134, and it seems to be better balanced. Boivie (talk) 09:46, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- I think we should copy the list from en:vital_articles to this page and delete the sports entries that are now. Then we can add the 66 articles from that to get to 200 (if thats the limit). --Santac (talk) 11:56, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- I've deleted 50% of the baseball entries (and Reggie W from basketball), none of them was on en:vital articles. Then I added the people listed below. --Santac (talk) 05:50, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

- I've deleted some more; Figure skating and American football was cut in half. Then I added various sports eg badminton. Since the list was so obviously US-biased I've made the changes without debating who to delete/add. There's still more work to do on the list, but now it's a lot more balanced. --Santac (talk) 09:23, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
- Great! Keep on making changes to these lists wherever you find need for improvements. Boivie (talk) 17:15, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Additions
[edit]I have boldly added
- en:Hans Holbein the Younger (German graphic artist)
- en:Inigo Jones (English designer and architect)
- en:Cicero (Roman orator and politician)
- en:Tacitus (major Roman historian)
- en:Roland (French legendary figure, hero of epic, also important in later literature -- note: the English article needs a lot of work)
- en:Helen of Troy (Greek legendary figure)
- en:Pāṇini (Sanskrit linguist)
Is this OK? I think their importance is clear e.g. from the current English articles (except in the case of Roland). I also took one out, from among mythical and legendary people --
- en:Cassiopeia (mythology) (a very minor figure, and there are too many from Greek mythology: she remains as a constellation, elsewhere in the 10,000)
Please tell me if I need to explain more! Andrew Dalby (talk) 15:22, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
- I support all these, and strongly support la:Cicero and en:Pāṇini. A. Mahoney (talk) 16:57, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comment. But I didn't realise, when I did this, that the total of 10,000 has already been reached. I ought therefore to propose some deletions to match, and I will do so at Talk:List of articles every Wikipedia should have/Expanded. Andrew Dalby (talk) 11:25, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Very few chemists
[edit]People like Linus Pauling, Gilbert Lewis, Fritz Haber, Robert Burns Woodward, ... made very important contributions to humankind and are not on the list. Ariel C.M.K. (talk) 14:15, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed, add them in and see if anybody complains. --MarsRover 09:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Actors
[edit]We have a preliminary discussed quota of 70 for actors, but 125 actual. Therefore some cuts are inevitable. What we can do for now is moving some less notable actors to Candidates subpage. I am not competent enough to make any changes to actors list, but i have asked user:Horim who is an active editor on movies to make some suggestions (see his talk page, unfortunately only in Russian). Now i will make cuts according to his suggestions, but even some more are necessary.--Abiyoyo (talk) 11:48, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
What is also important is to add some more asian (chinese, indian, japanese etc), african, maybe australian and european actors. For now there is a dominance of US actors, which is fair (for Hollywood importance and influence), but it should be not that overwhelming. Therefore even more cuts in american actors in favour of others is necessary.--Abiyoyo (talk) 12:33, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Current political leaders, 13

One in, one out
[edit]I wanted to add the most significant Romanian author, en:Mihai Eminescu. I feel we have too many English-speaking and too many science fiction authors so I took out Clifford D. Simak. If anyone wants to suggest a different change, please say! Andrew Dalby (talk) 21:03, 3 September 2014 (UTC)
- I came here to suggest that en:Mihai Eminescu was cut from the list. He does not appear to be recognized outside of Romania. Many others are more relevant to include. --Santac (talk) 09:36, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Tennis: include Djokovic, drop an American player
[edit]On June 13, 2021, Novak Djokovic won his 19th singles Grand Slam title, just 1 less than Nadal and Federer. He also trails Margaret Court, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf, but is ahead of everyone else in the history. He is also the current holder of multiple additional records: most weeks as ATP No. 1 (325 and counting, passed Federer in March), most year-end No. 1s (shared with Sampras but most probably going to improve this season), the only male player in the Open Era to win each Grand Slam tournament at least twice, the only male player in the Open Era to hold all 4 titles simultaneously besides Laver, the only man to win all ATP Masters singles etc. Looks like this litany of achievements should make him eligible to be included in the 10,000 list. It means that another player must be excluded. I see three more or less obvious options, all of them Americans:
- Pancho Gonzáles (who spent most of his playing days in professional tour, almost - but only almost! - won professional Grand Slam but has only 14 amateur or professional Grand Slam titles in total and was not competing against half of the field - either amateurs or professionals - most of the time);
- Andre Agassi (who is a career Golden Slam winner and at some point oldest male No. 1 but otherwise has only 8 Grand Slams, just 101 weeks as No. 1, and only once finished as the season's No. 1);
- or Chris Evert (who is a woman and thus less comparable but still has slightly less Grand Slams than Djokovic, less overall time as No. 1 and slightly less seasons finished as No. 1).
Any thoughts on why Djokovic should NOT be included or who should be excluded instead? --Deinocheirus (talk) 14:11, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- OK, for a month and a half there were no objections, and in the meantime Djokovic has caught up with Federer and Nadal in terms of Grand Slam titles and is presumably on his way to a calendar Grand Slam, just the second in men's singles since the start of the Open Era. So keeping him out of the list is not even an option. Strictly based on achievement numbers, I am going to substitute him for Pancho. --Deinocheirus (talk) 17:38, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
Luís Gama
[edit]Luís Gama was an 19th Century Brazilian lawyer, journalist and poet illegally enslaved when a child and as a free adult he managed to free more than 500 people from captivity (also being responsible for the largest freedom of slaves in the Americas). He could be notable enough for this page? What about Santos Dumont, Machado de Assis and Candido Portinari? Thanks, Erick Soares3 (talk) 23:31, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Paul Celan
[edit]Celan is generally regarded as one of the most pre-eminent European post-World War II poets, if not the single most important one [2], [3]; he was the central figure in the dispute on "writing poetry after Auschwitz". Could replace e.g. Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy (does not seem anywhere that influential). Blacklake (talk) 18:14, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
- Well, I haven't heard from Celan and I have heard (and read Tolstoy). But besides my opinion, Tolstoy is available in 176 languages while Paul Celan is in 48 languages. The difference is great. Theklan (talk) 14:25, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- More context here: Tolstoy is the 6th most popular person for street names in European capital cities. Theklan (talk) 11:29, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- You are talking about Leo Tolstoy, not Aleksey. Deinocheirus (talk) 18:13, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Greta Thunberg for Al Gore
[edit]Al Gore is listed as an activist, what is doubtful. Greta Thunberg is not in the list. Having a woman from Sweden would make more sense than a man from the US who is famous for being VP, a list that is too large. Theklan (talk) 10:15, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Al Gore is actually famous as a global climate change warrior who was into it before Greta was even born and got the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. With all due respect to her... Deinocheirus (talk) 02:07, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
Figure skating: Substitute Yuzuru Hanyu for Scott Hamilton
[edit]Hanyu is arguably the most important male skater of 21st century, the only double Olympic champion in the post-WWII period, seven-time World championship medalist (sharing the record for the postwar period), owner of multiple point records etc. The only possible argument in Hamilton's favor is that he had more World championship titles, but his influence on the sport seems incomparable to Hanyu's. Deinocheirus (talk) 21:19, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- No comments for 3 months now, I am going ahead with the change. --Deinocheirus (talk) 13:50, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Missing scientists
[edit]Rosalind Franklin, Lise Meitner, Vera Rubin, Jocelyn Bell. Scientists, who earned but have not been awarded a Nobel Prize. Vitosmo (talk) 10:15, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
- We don't have all Nobel laureates in the list. For people who weren't awarded the prize, there is a need to prove that they are more worthy than the laureates already in the list to replace them. Deinocheirus (talk) 15:19, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
How to access wikipedia pages from the Wikidata top node
[edit]The list specifies the top nodes (Qxxxxx) for every topic suggested. To translate or update a Wikipedia page in the target language, however, one needs the page URL.
Let's take Toshiro Mifune as an example. In Wikidata, you find him under [Q37001]. Going down the opened page, one always ends with the list of already implemented pages, en to start with and then all the other languages, for instance for Toshiro Mifune in Slovene: Toširo Mifune.
What code should I use to come from the top node (Q37001 in the above example) to land the URL for (existing or possibly not yet existing) wikipedia page in the desired language?

Figure skating: Substitute Tessa Virtue for Tara Lipinsky and/or Scott Moir for Robin Cousins
[edit]There are no dance skaters in the list of 7 figure skaters, while there are 3 men's singles and 3 women's singles representatives. This is quite a skewed situation. The list includes Tara Lipinsky who won World Championships once and Olympic Games also once, Robin Cousins who also placed first at the Olympics once and actually never won worlds, and Michelle Kwan who won only worlds (although four times) but failed to win at the Olympics. On the other hand, the Canadian dance pair won Olympic games twice (only one of two dance tandems who managed to do it) and world championships three times. They also played crucial role in the Canadian victory at the 2018 Olympics team event , so technically they are three-times Olympic champions. Their names are also associated with a much popularized comeback story at the 2018 Olympics when they returned from retirement to beat the favorites Papadakis and Cizeron. It seems to me that we can include both of them in the list, but if not then at least one of them. Deinocheirus (talk) 22:36, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- There were no objections or correcting suggestions for over two months. Since two members of one pair and two Canadians seems too much for a list consisting of 7 names in total, I am only replacing Robin Cousins with Scott Moir. If anybody has additional ideas regarding the original suggestions, please continue this topic. Deinocheirus (talk) 12:33, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
