How do I vote?

I follow the link in the header on en.wiki to try to vote and it tells me I need to log in. I try to log in and it tells me there's no user OwenBlacker on Wikimedia Elections. I've made thousands of edits over several years, mainly on en.wiki but also elsewhere, and have voted in elections before; I even have a global account.

So how do I get the site to let me log in to vote? — OwenBlacker (Talk) 14:11, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

There is a bug affecting some editors. A bug fix has been created but is waiting for an SPI admin to install it. Apparently, if one encounters this error one can usually get around it by going back to your home wiki and clicking the button that takes you to the vote server a second time. Looks like the system allows multiple votes if logged in from different projects or differen languages versions. No message like 'you've already voted'. Dedalus 21:14, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

I have mentioned the bug here The reason is that for those of us who have chosen to hide the Wikimania scholarship announcements, it has the collateral effect of hiding this announcement. I believe the developers will fix it shortly. OhanaUnited^{Talk page} 04:16, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Voting is still not possible to me. Here is a screen shot of log in page. If i go to log in button, the next page says that there is a wrong user name or password.--Seha 10:37, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

That login is for people administering the vote wiki. The "Welcome Seha" is all you need. Just scroll down and vote. I've now hidden the login button on the vote page (may need to clear your cache), so we should avoid that confusion in the future. Dragons flight 11:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

RTL on Hebrew version

Hi, the translation of the Hebrew version is problematic. If you mix Hebrew and English you must use RTL (right to left) code for direction, otherwise, you can't really read the text because the English and the Hebrew parts are mixed.. can someone change the page so the Hebrew version will be RTL? --Itzike 21:39, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

also in the meta page the problem appear. i added DIV tag to include direction to RTL and align to the right. check the page now. if the vote software will accept it, will be great. --Itzike 06:08, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Multiple voting?

I think there might be an issue with multiple votes from the same user who participates in different projects. I made my first vote using the link from the en-wiki. When I try to follow the same link again, the message is displayed, which says I have already made my vote and can only change it. But when I follow the voting link from other wikiprojects (ru-wiki, meta, ru-wikisource), I see no such message, and everything goes like it's normal voting. I have three receipts now: SPID 2222, 2229 and 2256 (and one more from en-wiki, which number I forgot to write down). Can anyone tell what's going on? Can users vote multiple times or not? This seems to be an ongoing problem with the voting software. The licom is working to fix it and remedy instances of duplicate voting. —Anonymous Dissident^Talk 10:53, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

I also accidentally voted several times, because the message, which says I have already made my vote was gone. The reason was, as I know now, that I tried it first from the German wikipedia, than from Commons and from the English wikipedia. Are all my votes removed now or only the duplicate ones? --Chstdu 19:28, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Not seeing vote option

I've made ~80 edits at en.wikipedia.org (not counting those to 'Talk' pages) but don't see the 'vote' header. Is this a known issue? Have I miscalculated my eligibility somehow? Gojomo 20:15, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes; the notice did not appear for me at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page or any other article page. However, by directly visiting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/1 I was able to vote. Gojomo 20:24, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Vote receipt

After I voted, I was presented with a "voting receipt" in the form of a PGP message. What am I supposed to do with that?

The PGP message appears to be encrypted with a public key (ID 35A64240B98FD85E) that is unknown to me, unknown to key servers and unknown to Google. Am I supposed to have the secret key for that? Is there something wrong with my preferences? Or is it a Wikimedia-internal key? If so, how can it function as "evidence of my vote"? Henning Makholm 04:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

The third party administrator, SPI, has the key. In the very unlikely event that there was a dispute over your vote they could use the PGP block to confirm that you voted and what for. I think this approach is a little silly (especially since the reciept doesn't contain any conventional plain text evidence). But it is what it is. Dragons flight 05:52, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

More than a little silly, I'd say. I count SPI among the good guys, but if, hypothetically, I were to dispute the tabulation of my vote, I have no way of knowing that the receipt I have actually confirms the vote I remember casting. For all I can know, the vote could have been tampered with before the receipt was generated. But thanks for the explanation. I was more worried that my account settings had somehow acquired a "this user's PGP key" field that I had not set myself. Henning Makholm 07:16, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm getting the following message when I try to vote:

Set $wgShowExceptionDetails = true; at the bottom of LocalSettings.php to show detailed debugging information.

Wiki does not exist

Clicking on the vote link while logged in on secure.wikimedia.org takes you to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/1, which shows a "This wiki does not exist yet." message. --cesarb 01:05, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

No, this is more pervasive. The site notice link will always break on secure.wikimedia.org due to a conflict with how secure does url redirection. One could directly craft urls such as https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/1 which will work, but I can't think of any way to place that in the site notice that wouldn't also lead to breakage elsewhere. The site notice is displayed using JavaScript, right? How hard is it to write var voteURL = wgArticlePath.replace("$1", "Special:SecurePoll/vote/1")? Or you should be able to do it in wikitext (which I believe the notice templates are parsed as) with {{localurl:Special:SecurePoll/vote/1}}. --Ilmari Karonen 14:54, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

The license notice "template" [2] operates on a weird hybrid of template substitution and HTML. I'm really not sure what it will parse correctly. Someone may have to experiment. Dragons flight 18:13, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Actually I believe it won't. The generated HTML is cached by language but not by site, which I think makes it impossible to use site specific functions. Dragons flight 22:41, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Are you sure? On the secure server, the centralnotice JS gets loaded directly from Special:NoticeText (e.g. [3]), which believe (assuming I'm reading the code right) bypasses the static JS cache entirely. --Ilmari Karonen 23:08, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Cannot vote on English Wikipedia, have made 25 edits before 2004

Trying to vote on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/1 and am not able to. I get http://isuckatdomains.net/~apeiron/vote.png despite having 25 edits before 2004. Apeiron 22:04, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Clarify and maybe suppress

Pardon me - newbie coming through... Hi, I am glad I located this page where I found a description of my problem (secure login, cannot vote due to "no wiki exists"). This is about the same time I learned that as a <25 edits editor I will not be able to vote. No problem. But I would request an explanation that goes beyond the phrase "Sorry, you are not in the predetermined list of users authorised to vote in this election." Or a link from the word 'predetermined' to the explanation. Ideally (or maybe not) the option to vote would not even appear for those of us who cannot. Thanks. I'll try attempt to solve your voting problem. First thing, make sure you attempt in in the wiki where you made over 25 edits (or the project you made most edits on), not using Meta nor SPI-INC's link. Then follow the link in that project to attempt to vote. Now going back to your question, the "predetermined list of users authorized to vote in this election" are those that made 25 edits prior to March 15, 2009. While I agree with adding this link so those could understand why they're not qualified, I don't think it really matters that much because there's nothing you could do to change it (other than try voting it in another project which you met the criteria, or, your edits were made before February 2002) OhanaUnited^{Talk page} 03:25, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
