Where to hyphen

[edit]

Heya! I'm also interested in this, seeing as Norwegian is, much like German, a language with a lot of closed compound words (such as redigeringsverktøyet, arbeidsplassopplæring, and innholdsoversettelsesverktøy). I am curious, however, how it would determine where to hyphenate the word? Is it just wherever it would be cut off? EdoAug (talk) 22:05, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@EdoAug: Modern browser have language-dependent rules to determine where to hyphenate. Usually, a hyphen is inserted after a syllable. For example, this is how your browser hyphenates Norwegian:

innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet redigeringsverktøyet redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet arbeidsplassopplæring redigeringsverktøyet arbeidsplassopplæring redigeringsverktøyet arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy innholdsoversettelsesverktøy arbeidsplassopplæring redigeringsverktøyet arbeidsplassopplæring innholdsoversettelsesverktøy arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring innholdsoversettelsesverktøy arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet redigeringsverktøyet arbeidsplassopplæring arbeidsplassopplæring innholdsoversettelsesverktøy innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy arbeidsplassopplæring innholdsoversettelsesverktøy redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy innholdsoversettelsesverktøy arbeidsplassopplæring redigeringsverktøyet innholdsoversettelsesverktøy

@Dexxor: Thanks for the example! This looks presentable enough, though there are some I would hyphenate differently. Does appear in the TOC? I know I couldn't use it in the Community Wishlist overview table when translating. EdoAug (talk) 12:23, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EdoAug: does appear in the TOC, but then you also need to embed invisible soft hyphens when cross referencing the section title or add an w:WP:ANCHOR to the section. Plus, it's simply not feasible to add soft hyphens to every article that needs them. Dexxor (talk) 13:13, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to bring up the HTML <wbr> tag, "word break opportunity". This tag can be inserted in the middle of a long word to let the browser know to prioritize line-breaking at that specific spot instead of by using its own methods to determine where to break. <wbr> doesn't insert a hyphen, though. Dexxor (talk) 08:43, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
