Talk:Celebrate Women/2023 archive
Add topicUpdates for 2023
[edit]Hi all, I am Alex Stinson, a member of the Campaign Programs team at the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year, we are providing some support in updating this page design and structure. I am going to be keeping a a log of what I have changed, and welcome any recommendations or feedback that you have below. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 02:40, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
Changes
[edit]In my first batch of edits, I: added buttons for regions and for adding events to the subpages, archived last years events to Celebrate Women/Events/2022 and tweaked the language to better reflect the most recent statistics and knowledge about the gender, gap. You can find the diff here, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 02:40, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- This week I made a few additional changes to the main page, improving language, updating links to ongoing initiatives and coverage of topics. Additionally, we marked the table for translation. The table translation may introduce complexity in updating the table on the main page, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 12:02, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
Recommendations for changes to this page
[edit]This section is for recommending changes to the page.
- One idea is to add flags for the country column -- I am not sure if there is a good way to do this that wouldn't lead to a lot of breaking in VE, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 02:40, 13 February 2023 (UTC)
- Suggestion: Delocalize Gender Gap Initiatives of the English text from English/French/Italian initiatives only.
- Instead of us (other-language-speakers) localize the initiatives only in the translated pages; the English text (as língua franca) should similarly present other languages initiatives. Meaning: Addition of Mulheres a Vermelho (Lusophone branch of Women in Red) and Wikiproyecto:Mujeres (equivalent in Spanish), as well as the usergoups Muj(lh)eres latinoamericanas en Wikimedia; Wikimujeres, Wiki Editoras Lx, and WikiMulheres+. These are the ones I know of, but any other initiative should be welcomed.
- PS: I will make the proper additions to Gender gap/Initiatives thorough list.

- PS: I will make the proper additions to Gender gap/Initiatives thorough list.
- @CalliandraDysantha Feel free to make that change -- I don't know enough about their activities to be able to represent them correctly. The text in those sections is currently from last year, Astinson (WMF) (talk) 14:16, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
- And to clarify the reason I don't feel confident adding it: I don't think I could accurately describe the events in scope of those groups @CalliandraDysanthaAstinson (WMF) (talk) 11:54, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you @Astinson (WMF). I tried to, but when a content has the <translation> tags I freak out and can't do it, haha. Do you have a advise for perilous times like this one? ❋CalliandraDysantha (✉︎) 22:50, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- @CalliandraDysantha Add the content like you normally would, and if the page breaks I will fix it (sorry for the after weekend response). Nothing dramatic will happen if you miss a tag. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

- Suggestion: In the main text, where it says: "Citations to women, pictures of women, and representation of topics important to women have similar gaps" change to "Citations to women, pictures of women, and 'women's perspectives on relevant topics have similar gaps". Echoing @Scann:'s comment on the Conversation Hour earlier today, on how is not just about gender-related topic, but about gender perspectives. ❋CalliandraDysantha (✉︎) 18:57, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

- Suggestion: Add Wikimedia Argentina guide on how to write LGBTQI+ biographies announced here, available in Spanish, and I think @TCappelletto (WMF): said today that it was available in Portuguese, but I don't have the link. --Scann (talk) 20:17, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Other Feedback
[edit]This section is for suggestions or ideas other than for design of the page.
- Crazy idea: the initiatives be presented in a world map. Unfortunately I can't help on how to do it, haha. But I once did used a Open Street Map, like this one. Best, ❋CalliandraDysantha (✉︎) 18:44, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
- @CalliandraDysantha I like the idea of doing that -- but I am sure how to make that Visual Editor/Newcomer friendly -- one of the principles here: is that I want folks to be able to edit it with little to know wiki knowledge -- having to update in two locations, one of which requires adding JSON is a little hacky and not consistent with the ease of contribution. Только женщин?

- Hi @The WishMaster!
- You are welcome to organize a similar event for International Men's Day in November. I imagine that articles about men, though the biographies are higher in numbers, can also have a very one sided bias. Especially topics as abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence and the consequences of these for boys and men could be central in an event like this. While IWD has the focus of better balancing the quantitative content in our projects, a IMD drive could have a more qualitative focus. Ciell (talk) 10:02, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Spam
[edit]Why am I forced to see banners about this nonsense 100 times? And not just in one wikipedia, but in wiktionary, and other language wikipedias. Unchecking all banners in user preferences does nothing. It is pure spam of a politically motivated nature, and most unappreciated by many users. At least we know now never to give money to wikimedia and wikipedia, it is very clear where the money will go. Bitternis (talk) 04:22, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- The banner will show to you on 7 projects, 5 consecutive times in 5 days. So depending on the number of projects and languages you visit, you will indeed see it a bit more often. But I see you have received instructions on how to block *all* banners globally through your global.css, so I think this is solved already. :) Ciell (talk) 19:40, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- You are rather missing the point.
- Wikipedia, and its partner projects are supposedly politically neutral. And yet there is clear constant intersectionality advocacy. Take a look at the calendar of "announcements" in central notice.
- What about the silent majority of users who do not want to be subjected to advertizing and advocacy?
- People will claim that wikipedia and similar projects always require donations... but I strongly suspect that projects like wikipedia could be run for a tiny fraction of the money if they didn't fritter away their money on pointless garbage.
- Furthermore, absence of political advocacy would reduce problems like undue weight, historical revisionism and pseudo-science. Bitternis (talk) 21:10, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- The point of this talkpage, is to discuss on- and offline wiki-events for International Women's day and Women's History Month.
- You were already discussing your broader complaints on the right talkpage and getting help there: there is no need to go into that here as well. I am sorry that our banner triggered you like this, but it has very little to do with our events and no relevance to our message. Ciell (talk) 21:56, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- You events do nothing but encourage historical revisionism and undue weight Bitternis (talk) 04:47, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Ciell, could you explain why I am seeing this banner if I have my preferences set to disable banner ads; and secondly, why do I need to run a 3rd party script in order to disable it? Asdfsadfsadfsa (talk) 22:58, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
Less than 20% of [biographies] are about women
[edit]Hi. Don't take me wrong, I am not against the campaign. But I dislike biased statistics, because I believe them to be detrimental in the long run, because of loss of credibility. So...
Historically women had less public exposure, so I presume it is normal that there are less biographies about women from, say, the Ancient Egypt, or 13th century Portugal. Can you get the same statistics, but for women born in the 20th or 21st century in the "western" world (say Europe, North America Australia, New Zealand)? What if you restrict to some more or less clearly defined class, say, for western politicians (cabinet members) does the fraction of men with (non stub) articles is larger than whose of women? By how much? - Nabla (talk) 23:27, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for this question @Nabla, and I agree: there are so many layers to this! A lot is more nuanced in the Gender gap portal here on Meta. We have collected a lot of links there to research in the movement about this, dating back to 2011. Also, we collect the clean numbers per project/language, etc. whenever we see them communicated somewhere. This month, the Wikimedia Research showcase will have their monthly YouTube hour on the topic of recent research on Gender and equity in Wikimedia.
- So while the language in the banner is indeed very generalized, I hope these pages help you towards the nuances you are looking for. Ciell (talk) 09:51, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
Spam "[1]"
[edit]Can somebody delete the spam in the title, please? You can see it in other languages and it appears as [1] before the text "Celebrate Women". Thank you. -- Amàzona (AWM) (talk) 16:46, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Amàzona (AWM)! Can you tell me what language the spam comes up in, and if it's on the landing page or in the banner? A screenshot would be very helpful! Ciell (talk) 11:36, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- (There was vandalism on the page that has been reverted just after your request here, but I want to make sure it's gone!) Ciell (talk) 11:39, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Ciell: you can see it in any other language rather than English. Thank you. --Amàzona (AWM) (talk) 12:28, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification @Amàzona (AWM): it should be solved now! Please let me know if something like that happens again.
- I have semi-protected this page now, for the duration of the banner. Ciell (talk) 13:42, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Ciell: yes, I've checked several languages and now it's solved. Besides, semi-protecting this page is a good idea. Thanks! --Amàzona (AWM) (talk) 13:48, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Asking for an edit to change a wrong link
[edit]Hi, the link to the online event "¡Alto! Mujeres trabajando 2023" is incorrect, please correct it to: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Encuentros/%C2%A1Alto!_Mujeres_trabajando_2023

Why is this banner displaying on articles for me if I have banner preferences set to not display?
[edit]What am I missing that it's not being disabled? Asdfsadfsadfsa (talk) 22:41, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Asdfsadfsadfsa,
- So sorry about this, there is currently a problem with (as far as I understand) cookies for all banners. I hope this will be solved this week: the bugreport can be tracked through this phabricator ticket.
- For this specific banner I have lowered the diet yesterday, since we are already halfway in the month of March: I hope that also helps in the meantime. Ciell (talk) 09:46, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
"Celebrate women" please, how revoltingly patronizing
[edit]- I don't recall wikipedia showing any concern about closing the racial knowledge gap during African Heritage Month that said "Celebrate Black People!"...so why this? Wikipedia has a gender bias, and it's not in favour of men. Alialiac (talk) 01:23, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Alialiac,
- Thank you for this remark. The English Wikipedia runs Wikipedia:Black WikiHistory Month every year. Other wiki's can join the initiative, and it is for the organizers of the drive to decide whether or not they want to use a banner to call attention to their project. Same as that for the African countries at the moment there is a banner running for the Wiki Loves Africa 2023 photo competition, who's organizers choose a different theme every year.
- If you are purely talking about the text in the banner, I'd be happy to hear some alternatives that we can draw from for next year to improve the text we show for International Women's day/Women's History Month. Ciell (talk) 15:03, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
Wikitable does not sort / dividing lines be handy to read
[edit]Hello, @Anthere:, thank you for your hardwork to realize a great landing page! I have been catching up to localize the page, and two things I wish to consult you.
1) D own from the section title "Gender Gap Initiatives", can we have horizontal lines to dviide each initiative/project? As I apply mobile skin on PC, for my eye problems, it is very hard to distinguish which group/event title covers what. 2) The second thing is that as I see those event tables are arranged as wikitable sortable, or we have toggle switch to each column title, they don't change, or I can't align them when0chronologically or weher: alphabetically. Any fix to come ? Happy spring equinox day, it is our "respect your ancestors day - visit them at their resting place" holiday in Japan. - Hi @Omotecho I did fix the table to a standard wikitable with the formatting. It's not exactly pretty but helps with accessibility. Unfortunately the sorting of tables by dates is very complex and not a skill I have -- and I wouldn't know how to solve with the tools in front of me. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 20:16, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Astinson (WMF), hellow, thank your prompt reaction, and I am glad to tell you I have finished translation on that page. Case solved, @Ciell, appreciate your thoughtful guidance. Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 05:45, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Increase diversity in our Wikidata integrations research
[edit]Hello Celebrate Women editors!
Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects at Wikimedia Deutschland is focused on enhancing data reuse and functionality between Wikidata and its sibling projects. We are sorely lacking diversity in our research and are seeking fresh perspectives.
We are conducting 1-hour interview calls to understand editors' experiences (positive & negative) when integrating Wikidata with other Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Commons, Wikisource etc.). Your insights will help ensure the products we build are suitable for all editors, regardless of gender, language or experience level.
Interview Information:
- Interviews will be conducted in English.
- Compensation is available.
- Sessions will be scheduled soon and on a rolling basis.
- Sign up here if you are interested.
- Diversity: We are keen to hear from women editors; editors with a diverse gender; beginner or casual editing experience and/or those who edit in non-latin or non-western languages.
Thank you for your interest in contributing to our research, Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 15:48, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
P.s. We also invite you to write to us if you prefer to contribute in written form. Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 15:48, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Danny Benjafield (WMDE) Hi Danny and thanks for this, I've shared it in some women and nonbinary editor instant message groups. Abraços, TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 14:59, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
