- Out of curiosity I took a 20# sledge to the ice on the sidewalk and measured it. Four solid inches. I'd upload it to Commons, but I can't find the appropriate category for "Winter sucks". There's another seven inches of snow on top of it, now. Kylu 20:41, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

- Helpful, clueful, thoughtful. I hope that sometime we'll have enough stewards to force each one of them (by means of lack of things to do) to have some spare time and to avoid wikistewardshipholism. --Nemo 22:37, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- Well, there's more to it than that. I'm finding myself being "used" to having steward tools. When you've got buttons and the sort of ... well, global mandate, I suppose ... that many stewards do, it's possible to do some quite out-of-policy things and nobody calls you on it. Tyciol, for instance... I was dubious about the lock and expected there to at least be some public discussion on if it were appropriate, and to an extent I tried to encourage it, but none was forthcoming. It bothered me that I could lock someone's account on my say-so that there were a number of complaints and nobody would actually question me on it other than the blockee, and that only in passing.
- That's not the sort of power I'm comfortable with anyone having, really. Trust is a wonderful thing, of course, but there needs to be some sort of verification and questioning that go along with it. I tend to think that the stewards are a fairly transparent bunch (especially compared to many other groups online), but I don't want to hold the hammer so long that everything looks like a nail ready to be flattened. Having read opposes on other confirmations many a time, people go absolutely bonkers over things that are typically trivial compared to the actual abuse that a rogue steward could actually perpetrate.
- Requests for comment/Minimum voting requirements is really worthy of some attention and making into a firm policy. So many people think that if they get four or five friends on a project, they can simply make themselves all admins and/or bureaucrats and run it the way they'd like and chase off anyone who objects. That's very un-wiki and not the sort of behavior we should tolerate, much less encourage from the way the system is implemented now. Also, Requests for comment/Dispute resolution committee and Requests for comment/Global requests committee could use some attention.
- I'd like to thank you all for the kind words so far, of course, and the trust that has been shown to me in previous elections/confirmations. I only hope that I've been more of an asset than obstacle, even for those who I was in opposition with at times. Kylu 03:50, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for this message, where you highlight the most important issues around.
- It's interesting to see someone leaving because of a lack of drama. ;-) Seriously, though, it's true that our admins etc. are often left a bit alone in their decisions and we should support each other more, at least for some difficult cases; on small wikis it's difficult because there are few users, but on Meta we should find a way to do so, although I don't have a solution apart from your exemplary transparency. With regard to Tyciol, it's a tough topic; I didn't like much that lock and especially its reasons, and I said so (if I remember correctly), but actually I don't care much about en.wiki and their USA-centric puritan policies (if any): the only thing people cared about here was to tag the proposed policy as such [1] [2] and I'm sure that someone would complain, if you ever got so used to the tools as to lock other users (and especially non en.wiki users) according to that non-policy.
