Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Fiji Hindi

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code hif (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Fiji Hindi Language name in English
Language name Fiji Hindi Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q46728 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality no indication Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Sabdkosh "Wiktionary" in your language
Project namespace Sabdkosh usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Sabdkosh ke baat "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Pacific/Fiji "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Fiji Hindi is a language that is spoken by all Fiji citizens of Indian origin and also by many people of other races (in districts where Fiji Indians are in a majority). This language developed in Fiji about a hundred years ago from the different dialects spoken by the Indian immigrants and has also been strongly influenced by English and Fijian languages. There are some 460,000 first language speakers of the language of which 150,000 reside in Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada.

A Fiji Hindi Wiktionary will provide this diaspora with an opportunity to have a reference source of words peculiar to this language. This will also enable Fiji Hindi writers to consolidate their attempts to develop a common standard for writing in Fiji Hindi.

Other discussion

I take it that the Wikipedia is the primary objective. This means that before the start of this project a full MediaWiki localisation and the localisation of the MediaWiki extensions will be required. GerardM 12:11, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is the primary objective but Wiktionary is being worked on at the same time because the two projects complement each other. Girmitya 23:00, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Girmitya et al.: Please complete the table at the top of the page with the data that are needed to the creation of the wiki (project localised name, logo, timezone etc.) --MF-W 19:18, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

May I remind you of the project name and namspaces? --MF-W 23:21, 16 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Namespaces

[edit]

The names of the namespaces used in the new wiki will match those currently used in the Fiji Hindi Wikipedia (seen, for example, in the drop-down menu at hif:Special:PrefixIndex — except, of course, where those names refer to the Wikipedia project name!). The "Project" and "Project talk" namespace names for the new wiki are already specified in the "Settings" box at the top of this page. The rest of the names are listed in the configuration file MessagesHif_latn.php. Do you see any problems in that list? If so, please discuss them here. (For more information about namespaces, see mw:Manual:Namespace and mw:Extension default namespaces.) - dcljr (talk)

Names of namespaces should be consistent with those used in Fiji Hindi Wikipedia. Abdul Kadir (talk) 00:31, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Note to interested parties, including Abdul Kadir and Girmitya: A question has arisen in the Phabricator task about the project name, "Sabdkosh", not being based on the word "wiki" in any way. Should a different name be used? What is the literal meaning of the word "Sabdkosh"? Does it mean "Dictionary"? Would something like "Wikisabdkosh" make sense?? - dcljr (talk) 18:55, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Although I don't have knowledge of it, I minor Support WikiSabdkosh. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:09, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Article counting

[edit]

The "article count" (also known as the count of "content pages") of each wiki is reported on the local Special:Statistics page (and some other places). Almost all Wikimedia content wikis use the so-called "link" method of determining what constitutes an article (since that is the default, as set in configuration files). See mw:Manual:Article count and mw:Manual:$wgArticleCountMethod for more information. Unlike in some projects (e.g., Wikisource), the "link" counting method seems to work fine in Wiktionaries. However, it is possible to choose another method ("any" is also a realistic choice). Please state here if you want the wiki to use a counting method other than the default "link" method. - dcljr (talk) 03:51, 18 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To be consistent with what most other wikis use, it is best to use the link method. Abdul Kadir (talk) 00:35, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note that there still doesn't seem to be a logo for this wiki yet. Not linked to in the Settings box above, anyway. - dcljr (talk) 18:59, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
