Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Nuosu

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

Please contribute to the test project. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:13, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ii (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Nuosu Language name in English
Language name ꆇꉙ Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q34235 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Shanghai "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Discussion

[edit]
  • Oppose until we can demonstrate that there is a community of native speakers who are willing to regularly contribute to it and maintain it. With Wikipedia blocked in China and most Yi people being able to write only in Chinese, I don't think it's possible to build a viable online Wikipedia community of native Nuosu speakers. Without regular useful contributions, small Wikipedias will practically be children's picture dictionaries with most edits being from cross-wiki vandals. Sabon Harshe (talk) 16:59, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong Oppose Nuosu native speakers have not shown any interest in contributing here. All the edits were from non-Nuosu users. Wikimedia incubator can be accessed from Mainland China via VPN but how many Nuosu internet users actually use VPN? How many Nuosu VPN users are aware of Wikipedia? How many Nuosu wikipedia users are aware of the existence of Nuosu Wikipedia at Incubator? And of how many of those users are actually wiling help create new articles at all? Nuosu people are more than willing to be involved in Paid tanslation services Here and Here and Here so internet connectivity to the global world is not an issue for them, yet not one of them are willing to come to Nuosu Wikipedia Incubator to help at all from 2001 to the present day spanning over twenty years. It shows that the Nuosu are a lazy, greedy and self-serving ethnic group that will not be willing to make any edits unless they are paid in money to do so. nuosu test wikipedia should remain in Incubator until they stop being lazy, greedy and self-serving. --Snæfellsjökull5 (talk) 02:33, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Needless to say, opposing a Nuosu Wikipedia because they are a "lazy, greedy and self-serving ethnic group" is not a particularly convincing position.
I do agree with a moral support of Wikipedia Nuosu at such time when an active Nuosu community emerges, concurring with @Sabon Harshe that a Wikipedia without a strong base is particularly susceptible to vandalism. NovumChase (talk) 22:25, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
