[edit]- Hill Mari language use another orthography! But half of all Mari sites are in Hill Mari/ Language code could be h-chm
- ?? (9 jan 2005)
- That's true. But there are not special language code for Hill Mari, even it is different language
- The en:ISO 639-2 code "chm" is for both what you called "Hill Mari" and the other main variant of Mari, so the two would take together "chm", such as British and American (English) in "en" and Belarusian in Cyrillic/Latin alphabet in "be". (13 jan 2005)
- I dont know how to explain it, but differences between them are more than between Serbian and Croatian... So, Hill Mari is spoken only by 15.000...

I can't see why a wikipedia in Mari couldn't cover both dialects. Take an example of the Normandic wikipedia. It got off very recently and is flourishing. Every article is written in one of the several Normandic dialects, and carries a tag saying in which dialect it is (see for example nrm:Jèrriais). As far as I can see, it works! And even if the same article would be written in both languages, that could be solved easily with some sort of disambiguation message. IJzeren Jan 06:59, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- Judging from the experiences with Nynorsk and Bokmål Norwegian, I would say that it is better to have two Mari wikipedias (or only one for Eastern). The problem in the nb/nn case was that articles started in one language pretty soon became a mix of both langugages, and then someone started editing the article in one direction or the other, with bad feelings as result. As for language codes, the languages have different s39-3 codes. We could use chm for Eastern/Meadow and the -3 code for Western/Hill mari, or we could use the two -3 codes.
