Proposal
[edit]Algerian Darija, also known as الدارجة الدزيرية (in Arabic script) and Darija Dziriya (in Latin script), is a significant and widely spoken language in Algeria, with approximately 50 million speakers. While a Wikipedia edition for Algerian Darija in the Arabic script already exists, there is currently no dedicated Wikipedia project for Algerian Darija in the Latin script. This is a notable omission, as the Latin script is extensively used by Algerians in digital communication, social media, and informal writing.
The Latin script for Algerian Darija is not just a transliteration of the Arabic script but has evolved into a distinct and widely recognized form of writing, especially among the younger generation and in online communities. A Wikipedia in Algerian Darija (Latin script) would cater to this significant portion of the population, providing them with access to knowledge in the script they most frequently use.
Creating a Wikipedia edition in Algerian Darija (Latin script) would enhance the availability of online educational resources in this script, preserving and promoting the language in its Latin form. It would also contribute to the linguistic diversity of Wikipedia, offering a new avenue for the expression of Algerian culture and identity.
This proposal aligns with Wikipedia’s mission to ensure that everyone can share in the sum of all knowledge, regardless of the language or script they use. The creation of this new edition would support the digital inclusion of those who predominantly use the Latin script in their daily communication.
Support for this project can be observed in the growing number of digital resources, social media content, and academic interest in Algerian Darija in Latin script. Establishing a Wikipedia in Algerian Darija (Latin script) would provide a formal platform for this language and script to flourish in the digital space.
I strongly believe that the creation of a Wikipedia in Algerian Darija (Latin script) will be beneficial not only to native speakers but also to scholars, linguists, and anyone interested in the language and culture of Algeria. This initiative would complement the existing Arabic script edition and ensure that Algerian Darija is represented in all its linguistic forms.

Discussion
[edit]- Algerian Darija is on the incubator. A language that hasn't got off the incubator isn't going to get a fork in a different script. It's possible the people working on the incubator project are willing to work on script issues, but the discussion should be taken there.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:15, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
