This page is the Annual Report of PhilWiki Community for the year 2023. It includes the activities of the organization from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.

The Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group or PhilWiki Community was formed on 1 June 2015 to served as an organization of unaffiliated Wikipedians in the Philippines.

January

  • January 26 - Teachers participated in the Wiki Quiz as part of the presentation on the utilization of Wikimedia in class during the 5-day In-service Training of Teachers in Minalabac District. Proper citation and relicensing were also discussed to over 50 teachers and school heads in attendance. At the end of the session, outputs were presented and at least 20 teachers signified to participate in the upcoming Wiki-related activities, in the formation of a Wiki Club for teachers in Minalabac and in organizing a teacher's training on Wikimedia next school year 2024-2025.

  • February 9 - Primary school teachers attended their first Wiki meet up at Cocoland Farm and Resort in Minalabac with PhilWiki Community President Maffeth O. Sto. Tomas for the formation of a Wiki Club. Nora Rejalde of Antipolo Elementary School (AES) was elected president of the organization. MaryGrace Valencia of Malitbog Elementary School was chosen as the vice president. Rose Ann Navales and Janice Penetrante from AES, and Shyrel Jacobe from Magadap Elementary School were appointed secretary, treasurer and auditor, respectively.[1] Nora, MaryGrace and Rose Ann have previously attended the Bikol Wikipedia Conference 2023 and WikiCommons PH Conference 2023 held last year.
  • February 18 - Three organizations namely the Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., Philippine Wikimedia Community Inc., and the Bikol Wikipedia Community had a Memorandum of Understanding signing with the aim to promote heritage advocacy and preservation through Wikimedia projects, programs and activities.[2] The signing was then followed by a meeting with Wiki Loves Manuscripts team on the Bikol Wikisource activity which Bikol Wikipedia Community is planning to organize in partnership with PH-WC and NCHMI. The Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group through its GLAM Philippines program will be digitizing old publications and manuscripts later this year in partnership with the University of Nueva Caceres Museum.

  • March 16 - At Starmark Cafe in Naga City last March 16, active members gathered for the organization's 2024 Annual Meeting. Architect Ian Kenneth Orasa, Maffeth Opiana-Sto. Tomas and Marife Altabano were re-elected for another term while Leah Sumalinog and Badette Roco were chosen by the members to replace Francis Charles Brioso and Glenda G. Brioso. The new board reappointed Ian Kenneth as board chair, Maffeth as president, Marife as treasurer, and Joseph as internal auditor with Badette as the new secretary.[3]
Celebrated during women's month, the Philippines has been participating the global campaign since 2019. The editing activity focuses on improving and creating new articles on women related topics using the Wikipedia Content Translation Tool.
PhilWiki Community Diversity Committee and Wiki Women Filipinas program chair Glenda Perico-Brioso organized the month-long activity.

  • April 6 - Twenty-two senior high students actively participated in WikiQuest: Journey through the World of Wikis as part of the Wiki Education Philippines program of PhilWiki Community. Assisted by their teachers, the participants completed a set of tasks related to Wiki collaboration by exploring the open educational resource and getting familiarized with some of the basic actions in contributing to the project.[5]
Teacher-Wikimedians from Cararayan NHS, Camarines Sur NHS, San Juan NHS, Antipolo ES and CBSUA served as facilitators in the fun-filled activity wherein the newbie editors performed simple tasks such as 'Fix It' or fixing grammatical and typographical errors on Wikipedia, 'Categorize It' or adding images to appropriate categories on Wikimedia Commons, 'Transcribe It' or transcribing and proofreading pages on Wikisource, and more.
All Grade 12 participants are members of the Cararayan National High School Wiki Club, a pilot extra-curricular organization formed in 2023. Marife Altabano, the committee chair of the Wiki Education Philippines program serves as the club's adviser. The club will welcome interested Grade 11 and junior high school students starting next school year.

  • June 1 - In celebration of its 9th anniversary, The PhilWiki Community Blog was launched to give the latest updates of our activities and related news around the Wikimedia movement. Inspired by the Diff blog, it is a space dedicated for up-to-date and relevant information beyond the confines of social media and Wikimedia platforms.
  • June 7-30 - Wikisource Loves Manuscripts PH training was conducted and 23 participants joined the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts PH Proofread-a-thon. The PhilWiki Community conducted a soft launching of Wikisource in the local languages featuring the translated novels and other writings of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.[7]
  • June 15 - PhilWiki Community - GLAM Philippines visited two more GLAM institutions to gather photographs of artifacts and collections to illustrate Wikipedia articles. The participants headed by GLAM committee program chair Francia Charles Brioso went to the Albay and Sorsogon provinces for their museum visit at the National Museum of the Philippines in Daraga and Museo Sorsogon to collect free licensed images.[8]
  • June 18 - PH-WC and WMTW had a quick meet-up at a cafe at level 88 of Taipei 101. The attendees talked about random things including trivial facts about the city, must-see places in Taiwan, and the next ESEAP Conference to be held in Kaohsiung.

Local Wiki Loves Earth organising countries
  • July 1—31 - The 2024 edition of Wiki Loves Earth in the Philippines was held to promote the natural heritage sites of the Philippines.[9] Now on its 7th year, the Philippine edition of the competition has received over 6,000 images now available under creative commons license. The competition is part of the international annual photography competition.
At the end of the month, over 1,000 photographs from the Philippines were submitted as part of the world's largest nature photography contest.
  • July 5—6 - The Third Wikimedia meet-up in Cebu took place in Cebu City. This is the first actual meet-up since May 3, 2009 which happened in the afternoon to early evening in Mandaue City. Four Wikimedians participated in the activities which included an informal discussion among other attendees from UP-Visayas, USP and LUDABI members on how to revitalize the Cebuano Wikipedia. A photography walk and museum hooping walk were done at the National Museum of the Philippines, Port San Pedro, Museo de Parian, Yap-San Diego Ancestral House, Casa Gorordo, among others.
  • July 11 - Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines concluded the 24-hour training program on transcribing, proofreading and validating Wikisource pages at Tugawe Cove Cafe. Seven participants from the University of Nueva Caceres College of Engineering and Architecture completed the training program.
  • July 20—21 - The opening session of the month-long Bikol Wikisource Training of Trainers under the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts Philippines training program was conducted attracting around 40 participants from the University of Nueva Caceres – College of Engineering and Architecture, Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges – Center for Rinconada Culture and Arts, representatives from the City Youth Officials of Naga City, and Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA)-Calabanga – College of Education.[10]

  • September 15 - Announcing the Top 15 entries in the Wiki Loves Earth Philippines 2024 photography competition!

Winning the grand prize in this year's edition is Kramthenik27's photograph (CC BY-SA 4.0) of the Apodynerus flavospinosus, a species of potter wasp endemic to the Philippines.


  • September 20—22 - The GLAM Wiki Conference Philippines 2024 was held in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Vigan in Ilocos Sur. The national gathering brought together cultural heritage professionals from Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums with the vibrant Wikimedia communities in the Philippines to exchange and share their experiences, new ideas, and collaboration results about open digital resources, cultural preservation including tangible and intangible heritage, and discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted.

  • October 4 - The first Philippine-language based edition of Wikisource has been created! the Bikol Wikisource is now live. The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project. [11]
  • October 26—27 - The PhilWiki Community conducted the Wiki Takes Bacolod, a photo scavenger hunt and free-content photography outreach activity held during the MassKara Festival. A total of 171 photographs of sights in the City of Bacolod and Silay City were captured during the activity and some of these are now being used in Wikipedia articles that need them.

  • November 1—December 31 The PhilWiki Community conducted Wiki Loves Food Philippines, the annual national gastronomic photography contest now on its 3rd year. It is a food photography competition on Wikimedia Commons which aims to collect free-licensed images of the rich cooking traditions and practices in the archipelago.
  • November 15—17 The PhilWiki Community formed Team Wiki Loves Birds PH which participated at the Puerto Princesa Underground River 7th International Bird Photography Race. The team is composed of PhilWiki Community members Michael Angelo Luna, Raniel Jose Castañeda and Alvin Casitas. The event is one of the highlights of the Puerto Princesa Underground River Subaraw Festival. The team also conducted an outreach in Puerto Princesa to increase the quality and quantity of free licensed images of different bird species on Wikimedia Commons.

  • December 3 - Announcing the winners in Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 Philippines! A panel of jurors composed of architects and Wikimedians selected the 10 best photographs based on the following criteria: technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.), originality, and usefulness of the image for Wikipedia. Winning the grand prize in this year's edition is Richmond Chi's photograph (CC BY-SA 4.0) of El Depósito, an underground water reservoir located at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in the city of San Juan built during colonial period, was adjudged as Grand Winner in this year's edition.[12] Congrats to the participants, organizers, and finalists for the Wiki Loves Monuments Philippines 2024.[13]

This year's final jurors were: Ar. Artemio Pasa Jr. (User:Jun_pasa), Ar. Casey Abalayan and Ar. Josenia Merencillo of the United Architects of the Philippines-Camarines, Wasiul Bahar (User:Wasiul_Bahar) of Project Korikath, Bernadette Roco of PhilWiki Community, and Irvin Sto. Tomas (User:Filipinayzd) of Commons Photographers User Group.
