PhilWiki Community engages in various activities in the promotion of free knowledge using different platforms. As part of its inclusive and pluralistic focus, the organization is currently presiding over various outreach programs aimed at reaching out to marginalized groups in the Philippines.

Ian Kenneth L. Orasa is the Chair of Advocacy Committee (2023-present). He currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees and previously served as PIO from 2021-2022. Steven Fung and Ramon Olaño, Jr. held the chairmanship of the committee from 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, respectively.

Engagements with civic and non-government organizations

As part of our community outreach activities, we have engaged with organizations which share a common interest with PhilWiki Community. It has collaborated in various celebrations such as the Mariano Perfecto Day celebration in commemoration of contributions of the "father of Bikol and Hiligaynon literature", Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day celebration held in Naga City, the Pagkarahay Tres Art Festival, and supported conferences on history, heritage and culture.

Last 15 October 2023, thru the Advocacy Program Committee head Ian Kenneth L. Orasa, PhilWiki Community collaborated with the Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement, Inc., the City Government of Naga, Centro Naga Business Club, Sumaro Bikolnon, UAP Camarines Chapter, Partido State University Center for Partido Studies, Partido State University Extension and Community Services Division, Bikol Historical Research Center, and ADNU Social Sciences Department, in the Celebration of the 437th founding anniversary of Ciudad de Nueva Caceres. Dr. Danilo M. Gerona delivered a comprehensive presentation on Revisiting La Ciudad de Nueva Caceres supported with documents from Archivo Franciscano Ibero Oriental, Museo Naval, Real Academia de la Historia and Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, and the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. He talked about the glorious past of the Nueva Caceres as one of the first four Spanish royal cities in Asia.

From October 25-26, 2023, PhilWiki Community promoted its language preservation and cultural heritage advocacies at the SIRANG Perspectives and Prospect: International Conference on Understanding the Contemporary Landscape Through the Lens of History and Heritage held at Ateneo de Naga University. PH-WC served as one of the partners in the international conference.[1]

Sumaro Bikolnon

Sumaro Bikolnon is a cultural organization which advocates the promotion of Bikol history and culture. Founded in 2007, its current president is Ramon Olaño who served as a board member of PhilWiki Community.

During the culminating program of Bikol Wikipedia's 15th year celebration last 31 October 2023, six (6) institutional partners including Sumaro Bikolnon were recognized by Bikol Wikipedia Community and Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group for their significant contribution and outstanding support.

Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement

Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement is a heritage and historical organization which advocates the preservation of built heritage and local history of Bikol. Founded in 2015, it is a vibrant group of architects, writers, and enthusiasts who are passionate in the preservation of local heritage. In 2015, the organization supported Wiki Takes Rinconada. Likewise, PhilWiki Community has engaged in a number of activities organized by the NCHM. The most recent engagement was a heritage tour in Sorsogon province on October 28-29, 2023.

Kintab Artists Group

Kintab Artists Group is a network of visual artists, writers and other artists which promotes different forms of artistic expressions. In 2019, the group conducted an art exhibit participated by some members of PhilWiki Community who are also into arts. During the Katood Art Exhibit as part the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day celebration organized by Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement among other entities, Wikimedia promotional materials such as bookmarks and stickers were made available to the attendees.[2] In 2021, the two organizations engaged in the Wiki Loves Art mural painting activities at Manapao Elementary School, San Juan National High School, Central Bicol State University of Agriculture and Bikol High School for the Arts and Culture.

Last 25-30 November 2021, Pagkarahay Art Festival 3, sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Kintab Artist Group Inc., Isarog Garden Society Foundation Inc. in partnership with the city government of Naga, Metropolitan Naga Water District and PhilWiki Community was held at Naga City Ecology Park. On the part of PhilWiki Community, it conducted Wiki Loves Art Photo Hunt, discussions on Wikipedia as part of its 14th Bikol Wikipedia Day celebration, and Wiknic gathering. The 6-day art festival featured art exhibit, murals, art installations, painting competition, photo walk, Wiknic, traditional games, open forum, art talks, and concert. This year's festival has a theme “Kapalibutan: Burabod nin buhay” (Environment: Source of life).

Media promotion

Media promotion in television and radio programs and newspaper columns reach a wider audience and create interest among its subscribers. PhilWiki Community has appeared in a number of local media outfits while its members have been invited to share about its activities.

Last 10-11 August 2022, we promoted Wikimania 2022 in radio stations wherein the community members also discussed the promotion of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons in the Philippines.

Fora

As advocates open knowledge as well as local culture and history, community members have been engaged in various fora as speakers or participants.

On 6 September 2019, at the Third Annual James O’Brien, SJ, Memorial Lecture Series: Preserving the Bikol Language – A Challenge to Bikolanos held at the Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City, Ramon Olaño, Jr. served as one of the invited reactors. The main lecturer is Dr. Jesus Federico Hernandez, Associate Professor at the Department of Linguistics, University of the Philippines, and is currently the Director for Training of the Linguistics Society in the Philippines. Other reactors are Fr. Wilmer Tria and Dr. Cyril Conde.[3]

The Wiki Loves Earth PH: Intro to Wikimedia Commons[4] was among the presentations at the Pagkarahay Art Festival 2021 organized by Kintab Artist Group, Inc. in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Minalabac and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) held in Minalabac, Camarines Sur. Last 7 March 2019, PH-WC president talked about the international nature photography competition and free licensing. The 8-day art festival featured webinars, zoom and live streaming, arts exhibits, art installations, performance arts, murals, films, bands, yoga, zumba, open mic, talks and workshops on arts, literary, theatre, music and dance, bringing in the theme “Pagkarahay: Isip, Lawas, Kalag” (Healing: Mind, Body & Soul).[5]

From October 25-26, 2023, PhilWiki Community promoted its language preservation and cultural heritage advocacies at the SIRANG Perspectives and Prospect: International Conference on Understanding the Contemporary Landscape Through the Lens of History and Heritage held at Ateneo de Naga University. The founding chair of PhilWiki Community and Bikol Wikipedia administrator presented PhilWiki Community: its advocacies in indigenous languages and cultural heritage preservation through Wikimedia. PH-WC served as one of the partners in the international conference.[6]
