OKA (Open Knowledge Association) is a Swiss non-profit organization dedicated to improving Wikipedia and other open platforms. It provides Wikipedia training and monthly stipends (grants) to full-time and part-time translators to edit Wikipedia. It currently funds ~15 full-time translators (split among 30+ active translators).

OKA editors are disclosed as paid editors because they receive compensation. However, OKA editors are independent and not required to work on any particle articles or topics. OKA is active on three Wikipedias (English, Portuguese, Spanish) and covers many source languages including French, German, Italian, and Russian.

OKA is an association based in St-Légier, Switzerland, founded in 2022 (UID CHE-461.288.884). It is recognized as a tax-exempt organization with a public utility purpose.

Joining OKA[edit]

OKA is always seeking volunteers. If you are interested in joining us, please contact us. Potential tasks include:

  • Day-to-day management (prioritization of articles, quality review, teams management)
  • Admin (disbursement of grants, annual reports, accounting)
  • Internal processes improvements
  • Fundraising and community outreach
  • International expansion

Individuals who donate over CHF 5,000 per year are eligible to join OKA as formal members with voting right in the annual assembly.

Grant application[edit]

OKA does not accept unsolicited applications for grants. When positions for stipend recipients are open, they are generally advertised on LinkedIn for a very short period of time. CVs of candidates are then reviewed, followed by a short interview and trial period.
