Cannot edit Meta due to IP block despite having Global IPBE permission

I have received following error when trying to edit meta pages, despite having the Global IP Block Exempt permission:

Your username or IP address have been blocked.

Reason as below:

Multiple blocks target your account and/or IP address Block start time: 2021-06-07T10:09:47 longest block end time: 2023-08-16T04:14:00 Relevant Block ID: #183673、#279782 (Your IP address might be in the block list) Your current IP address is 185.242.4.142. Please include the above information when asking.

Can that be fixed?C933103 (talk) 02:14, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

It looks like, though you have a global IP block exemption, you'd also need a local Meta IP block exemption. Different wikis will have different criteria for granting local IP block exemptions; on the other hand, Meta is the central coordination wiki where you requested, and were granted, your global IP block exemption. Requesting action from interface admins

Hi all. The two special pages Special:DoubleRedirects and Special:BrokenRedirects contain some redirected ".js" and ".css" user pages that haven't been fixed by bots because bot accounts don't have the "edituserjs" and "editusercss" permissions. Only interface administrators do. My request for interface admins is to run the script redirect.py to fix those pages. Thank you. --Meno25 (talk) 07:50, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

@Meno25: Do we really need to act? People can fix their own css/js redirects or presumably they can be deleted, and the Help: redirects are as they should be.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:10, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: The ideal solution here is to create a new user group (let's call it "interface admin bot") that has the "edituserjs" and "editusercss" permissions and add one or two bot accounts operated by one or two expert bot operators (who understand the security implications of the edit js and edit css permissions) to it to fix such redirects regularly but life is not ideal. As regarding your question "Do we really need to act?" Well, of course no. We are not obligated to do anything here. Fixing redirects is a bot task and I know that asking human editors to fix it every now and then looks weird but as I told you, life is not ideal. --Meno25 (talk) 08:29, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
I must have not been clear enough. Why do you think that we need to fix those double redirects? We can leave them, they are not breaking any functionality on site. If we had a bot then it would break the help redirects which are set up purposefully.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:35, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
The reason we need to fix double redirects is stated at w:Wikipedia:Double redirects and I thought that you knew it. To quote:
These pages are unwanted, because Wikipedia's MediaWiki software is currently configured to not follow the second redirect. The MediaWiki feature which will allow it is not mature yet. If someone is redirected to a redirect, the chain stops after the first redirect, like in the example. These situations create unpleasant experiences for the reader and make the navigational structure of the site confusing.
Regarding your comment "We can leave them, they are not breaking any functionality on site": Your comment is true for now but you are missing the point here. Simply put, the current practice (ignoring them) is unsustainable. Those redirects will not fix themselves by themselves. If we ignored them, then, after 3 months, there will be like 100 to 200 of them on the special page, and after 6 months/1 year there will be like 500 of these (and let's say in the far future after 5 to 10 years, there will be like 5,000 to 10,000 of them on the special page). At some point in the future someone will have to deal with this problem. Possible solutions are: 1-Run a bot as I mentioned earlier or 2-Run a maintenance script to periodically fix them directly on the database or 3-Modify the MediaWiki code of the special page itself to ignore ".js" and ".css" user redirects. I agree that we are not in a hurry to fix this problem now though.
Regarding your comment: "If we had a bot then it would break the help redirects which are set up purposefully" Of course, any bot running to fix those redirects can be instructed to simple ignore (not to fix redirects in) the "Help" namespace. This is a common knowledge for any bot operator. Thank you @Billinghurst: for taking the time to comment on this issue. --Meno25 (talk) 09:42, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
User:Meno25: I am talking about THESE double redirects, those js/css in user namespace. The only impact is for the users, and if you look them they are not redirects as you cannot have redirects in css and js files. You are missing the point and missing the obvious. They don't need fixing, this is "make work" for no purpose but focusing on a report. Nothing is broken that the user cannot fix. They don't need our intervention. If you concern is the accumulation in the list, then I suggest that the better solution is to lodge a phabricator ticket so they are ignored.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:11, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
In the end they are dead css/js of moved accounts. They should never be fixed, they should be deleted. Next time you see them, please compile a list and nominate for deletion according to meta's processes.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:47, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Agree, "redirect" js/css subpages in the User namespace that are not associated with a registered user should only be deleted. — xaosflux Talk 14:26, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Requesting for MassMassage Rights

Hello, I am Nitesh (User:Nitesh (CIS-A2K)) working with CIS-A2K. I would like to request you please give me MassMassage rights for next six months. My previous rights period is over now. This month from 1st June, CIS-A2K started an Internet Support program in India. I have to inform communities through their Village pumps. You can see the program page here. We are planning for a few activities in the upcoming months, so that's why I need the MassMassage rights for the 6 months. Thank you Nitesh (CIS-A2K) (talk) 09:33, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Patroller (rollback) for EstrellaSuecia

I've found myself scrolling through recent changes on Metawiki quite a lot in the recent months and being able to quickly revert obvious vandalism would be great. Although I'm currently not heavily involved in Metawiki discussions I'm certain in my ability to determine what is and what is not vandalism, especally considering my experience of dealing with LTA's and trolls. I have been a sysop on SVwiki for almost a year with over 25k edits there without getting into any conflicts or that sort of thing. I also have experience with Commons, Wikidata, ENwiki and ESwiki and I am becoming more and more active as well here on Meta. If elected, I would like to use my tools to revert obvious vandalism here on Metawiki. I believe my contact information and so on is sufficient with the policy and my activity level might be fine, I'm not really sure how much acitivity is expected. At least I regurarly add requests at SRG and Spam blacklist and tag obvious G1-G3 for speedy.

EstrellaSuecia (talk) 08:15, 6 June 2021 (UTC)

Oppose Oppose You have eight undo actions, only three in this year and one of them was a self-revert. While I don't doubt your experience, I don't see any need in the rights. ~~~~

Support Support (prob would have just flipped this if not for the oppose above) - sysop on a content project with non-trivial global edit history; I'd only oppose if there was an actual showing of misuse as patroller is fairly low risk and can be easily removed if abused. — xaosflux Talk 17:40, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Support Support per Xaosflux. Patroller is little to no deal, and can (and should!) be granted to any reasonably trusted user on request. EstrellaSuecia is a content-project sysop, and if he wishes to help by patrolling/rollbacking here, that's fine with me. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 17:53, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Support Support per Xaosflux and Martin Urbanec above, but also because I do believe the patroller user group on Meta Wiki is quite a minor user group. As long as someone can demonstrate understanding of Meta:Inclusion policy, I think we should be fairly liberal here. Dmehus (talk) 18:11, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Fine by me then. ~~~~

Can not edit Meta-wiki even if have GIPBE premission

I currently have GIPBE permissions, but the proxy I used when editing Meta-Wiki cannot be edited and I cannot edit my talk page. A few days ago, I sent an email to the steward mailing list to report this matter but I did not receive any response. Therefore, can I grant me a local IPBE permission for Meta-Wiki? Thank you!

Block message below:

Your account or IP address has been blocked.
What can I do now?
You can email ‪Martin Urbanec‬ or another administrator (list) to contest the block. You cannot use the email this user feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences, has been confirmed, and you are not disallowed from using it while blocked.

Your current IP address is 2406:da18:f31:8300:6627:ee78:8962:58a7 and the block ID is #191997. Please include this in any queries. Blocked users can edit their own user talk page, unless specifically disallowed from doing so (if you are not logged in as a registered user, this will be the talk page for your IP address). You can add {{unblock|your reason for requesting an unblock here}} to your user talk page to request unblocking.

If the block reason seems unrelated to you, it is possible you were affected by a software feature known as the autoblock. In that case, contact an administrator and they will do their best to remove the autoblock. Please note that, for technical reasons, removing the autoblock is not always possible. In such cases, you may need to wait 24 hours for the autoblock to expire.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have happened.

夢蝶葬花 (talk) 01:45, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

@夢蝶葬花: You can clearly edit metawiki as you have edited here. Aside from that, global IPBE only overrides stewards' global blocks, it will never override a local block by an admin. And to note that metawiki is not impacted by/excluded from stewards' global blocks anyway, only local blocks. Local IPBE granted for 12 months.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:49, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! 夢蝶葬花 (talk) 05:35, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
The IP mentioned in the request (rather the /36 range) is blocked locally but not globally. I'm not sure why Martin Urbanec did not perform a global block but that is why GIPBE did not work, as Billinghurst explained. ~~~~

Oppose Oppose Your account is blocked at English Wikipedia for sockpuppetry, and the English Wikipedia is the only project you have significant experience at. I'm unable to support a permission request of someone who does not explain what happened and why should the community still trust you here. Sincerely, Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:35, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Martin Urbanec, that's what I was afraid of! I am blocked on English wikipedia for abusing multiple accounts but I have the will to move forward productively and as they said, I am waiting for few months to appeal my block there. I know I did wrong there and but I have changed totally since then. Here at meta, I would like to help translate pages to urdu language. Hulged (talk) 13:25, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Comment Comment I don't see the need for you to be autopatrolled, there is no need for the patrol marks to come off your edits. I wouldn't fuss that they are there, they are more indicators for us, than for you, especially as we operate our spaces and patrolling differently that the wikipedias.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:47, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

Request for "Patroller" right

Hello. I'd like to request for the "Patroller" right on Meta-Wiki. I've Started and Added your Name on active SWMT patroller, and have patrolled Meta-Wiki via Global Twinklethe global abuse log. I'd like to request patroller rights so that I can easily rollback vandal/LTA edits on Meta (I do have Twinkle Global but I run into filters some times, a difficulty that I would not face with rollback). Please give me this Right as tempraory Only Three Months because in Past I more Active on English Wikipedia. Best Regards MXX8 (talk) 13:45, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: "If we believe that you need the rights, they will be allocated." - thought requesting is mandatory? Leaderboard (talk) 08:09, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
@Billinghurst:: There's a sentence here on Meta:Patrollers that says:

The right is given by default to any administrator, but can be given to trustworthy users upon request on the request page for help from a sysop or bureaucrat.

@Leaderboard: - since you're a patroller here, how'd you get patroller rights (just asking, since I don't know what's the usual norm to get it.

Request for sidebar translation

I request to create the following pages with their respective content:

If not appropriate, please tell me why. Thank you. —— Eric LiuTalk 08:11, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Done one as the text, the others as redirects. From memory only one of the languages should be containing the text.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:45, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

FYI Wikienterprice

Wikienterprice (talk contribs count logs page moves user rights block log email) - just FYI, no specific admin intervention requested, but I leave it up to anyone here to determine any response (if any at all).

This is new user account created on Meta, with a single (now reverted by an independent volunteer) edit. Given that this edit is merely a sarcastic subsection on Talk:Wikimedia Enterprise, and the username is "Wikienterprice" it is fair to say that this is a single-purpose account designed to "spoof" the project. Furthermore, given their comment, that this is an existing Wikimedian who has created a second user-account merely to publish that comment.

As stated, I'm not requesting any specific admin action, just noting here for awareness. LWyatt (WMF) (talk) 13:53, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Internationalization guidelines

Dear sysops, I would like to know if the preparation of pages for translations in accordance with the Meta:Internationalization guidelines is mandatory, and if I can request blocking of those who insistently and after multiple warnings refuse to follow these guidelines. Also, in the case of a translation administrator, they must follow these guidelines, right? How can we make them follow these guidelines, If he/she insistently do not follow them? --Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 21:29, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

I do not believe it is mandatory (maybe thats because I have never seen it before) and I would object if it was without a highly publicized discussion, the use of the new tvar syntax for example should not be required. But, it does include some generally applicable suggestions that are useful, though it depends on the specifics of a case - I do not believe deviation from the guidelines (even after warnings) is by itself enough to warrant a block, the changes made would also have to be disruptive themselves. If you are in dispute with another contributor, a third person may help as a mediator.
About I18n, I mainly regrets WMF staff are not trained to well prepare pages. They are granted without any training and often produce a pretty bad tagging.
I would support a stricter granting for Translation admin right: for example, having prepared a page and be able to fix all i18n issues before being granted. And WMF staff would follow the same granting process. -- Pols12 (talk) 11:32, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Pronoun removal

I'm not sure if this is the right the right forum or not, but I have a global preference set to display he/him as my pronouns. I would like to remove that altogether. There are radio buttons to select they, she, or he, but there is no option that I can see to not display them at all, which is what I want. —Fredddie 22:33, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

@Fredddie: Use "they" if you do not want a specific gender. If that is not suitable, then you will need to go and lodge a phabricator: ticket for the developers to consider.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:05, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Please note, this is only a "language" setting, it is specifically not a value to store someone's sex or gender. See a longer discussion we recently had on enwiki on this topic here: w:en:MediaWiki_talk:Yourgender. Would have to check, but I think you may be able to change this back to "unknown" using the API - however functionally picking unknown is identical to picking gender neutral. — xaosflux Talk 13:44, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
FYI, just checked the setting - the values this can hold are "male", "female", or "unknown". Specifying the They edit wiki pages option will literally set your value to "unknown" - how projects and other specific messages set their verbiage about this value is mostly up to them. — xaosflux Talk 13:54, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
