From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

POTY 2010 CentralNotice

Hello, I'm Mono. I'm on the organizing committee of the Fifth Annual Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year, a contest where the featured pictures selected from 2010 on the Wikimedia Commons are voted upon by the community. It's quite a big deal and we'd like to see an increase in global participation this year—it's an enjoyable competiton that occurs annually. Since it relates to matters that concern the community at large, it would be great to have a sitenotice for logged-in editors, inviting them to join.

The contest will likely happen in May, so I'm posting early—would it be possible to post a global notice? If so, what would be involved?

Best regards,  ono  04:06, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Hey Mono, do you mean a local site-notice for commons or a global one using central-notice? A local site notice could probably be enacted easily by the Commons community through commons:MediaWiki:Sitenotice. Central-notice as you probably know would be enacted through Meta but after proper approval and support. I can help if you want. Theo10011 04:18, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Globally would be preferred, especially on the English Wikipedia. My main query was how to get "proper approval and support".  ono  04:20, 21 April 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I don't know of a proper procedure yet for requesting a campaign, most Meta admins only make corrections etc. to existing notices. I will forward it to someone from the staff and get back to you on this. Thanks. Theo10011 04:28, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Me and my niggling mind would sleep better, if there's a (correct) comma.

Board Elections - Linking directly to a translated page

The link to "Become a candidate" from the CentralNotice in the Hebrew Wikipedia points to a page in English. Is it possible to make it point to a page in Hebrew?

This is probably relevant for many languages. --Amir E. Aharoni 08:44, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Change logo on Www.wikimedia.org template

Hi all,

I saw on the www.wikimedia.org web page that on the top right for the Wikimedia logo, the image is actually linked to the wikimedia foundation website, http://wikimediafoundation.org/.

Therefore, it made sense for me to change the Wikimedia logo to the Wikimedia foundation one. I've made this change on the /temp page here.

Therefore, could an admin please review and sync my change? Also, a commons admin will need to protect commons:File:Wikimedia_Foundation_RGB_logo_with_text.svg, just as commons:File:Wikimedia logo text RGB.svg has been protected.

Thanks in advance,

The Helpful One 21:56, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Done - seems sensible. -- Mentifisto 22:31, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, could you also unprotect commons:File:Wikimedia logo text RGB.svg as the only reason it was protected was because it was used on the portal. The Helpful One 22:49, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Done. Béria Lima msg 22:58, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Note: After discussion on IRC with User:Mentifisto and User:Beria on IRC, we decided it would be better to have this image fully protected as it is quite heavily transcluded across many projects. The Helpful One 23:05, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Update to MediaWiki:Rightslogtext

Hi all,

I was looking at the user rights changes log, and noticed that it said "the bureaucrat or steward changing the right" and "User is the name of the bureaucrat or steward". Majorly added stewards back in August 2008, but since then administrators have been able to grant the autopatrolled and flood flag right.

Therefore, can you please update to "the administrator, bureaucrat or steward changing the right" and "User is the name of the administrator, bureaucrat or steward" accordingly?

Thanks,

The Helpful One 00:36, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Please create an edit filter to tag users that create very short new articles

Hi all,

From my tagging of pages as offtopic, I have noticed that many of them are quite short pages. Therefore, can you please copy this abuse filter at en.wiki which basically flags any edits of users creating very short articles. It does not stop them creating the article, just tags it, making it easier for admins/patrollers to delete/tag for deletion.

The abuse filter should be able to be copied without any modifications.

Thanks,

The Helpful One 16:44, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, there are some pages that aren't on that filter, so a more edit filter savvy admin will need to look at this request. The Helpful One 16:54, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Centralnotice issue

Hi, the current board elections notice banner doesn't link properly on the secure server. It goes to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/200 instead of https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/meta/wiki/Special:SecurePoll/vote/200 . Can this be fixed at all? If it seems appropriate, could we add another menu item to the navbox in Template:Board elections 2011. Here's a diff of my basic suggested change-- to promote discussion, add a link to the election talk page.

Right now, we're not getting a lot of participation or discussion about the board election, so I can't imagine it's a controversial change-- the more input and participation, the better. I'm finding it nearly impossible to fairly assess most of the non-EnWiki candidates without a more robust debate. --Alecmconroy 10:07, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Added. But the "discuss" field needs now to be translated in every languages (except english and french). -- Quentinv57 (talk) 19:33, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
I just translated it in 23 languages, but some languages are missing. You can also help by adding parameter "discuss=<value>" to lang templates. -- Quentinv57 (talk) 20:06, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
