Learning and Evaluation/News/Learning Days for Wikimedia Conference 2018/Education Session

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Education Team at the Wikimedia Foundation, in collaboration with Wikimedia Argentina, are offering a session for program coordinators, affiliate representatives, and other Wikimedia Conference 2018 participants that share enthusiasm for Education in the Wikimedia Movement, to get together and share best practices for education programs in our movement. This will be a three hour session in the afternoon of Thursday, April 19th.

Objectives

[edit]
  1. Participants will have an understanding of what is happening in education programs globally and the best practices that are common among them and will be able to connect with others in order to support education activities globally
  2. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to plan and evaluate high quality education activities, and to advocate for Wikimedia projects in education

Session Structure

[edit]

The first hour of the session will include a facilitated networking and sharing activity. During this activity all participants will have the opportunity to discuss their education activities or interests with others in the group.

The second half of the session will provide several options based on individuals' interests and preferences. These options were developed within the framework of the recommendations from the Education Program Survey Report, and will provide both experienced and new education program leaders with the opportunity to grow individually and contribute to our community.

The three options will be explained in detail at the beginning of the event, during which time participants will be able to express their preferences.

Education Program Planning and Evaluation

[edit]

This workshop prepares program leaders to be able to plan and evaluate education programs with clear outputs, outcomes, and high level impact. It will be a hands on workshop with active participation. We will go through a problem analysis activity that will lead us into outlining our outputs, outcomes, and a vision statement for our project. This activity is a modified version of the workshops that took place during Nichole's site visits in Asia at the end of 2017. Community members who participated in those workshops found them highly useful.[1]

Creating shared guidelines for Wikipedia assignments in Education Programs

[edit]

Based on a document proposed by WMAR, we'll be discussing general guidelines that any program leader can use to implement a (mostly) Wikipedia assignment in the classroom. The discussion will include next steps to keep improving the document and make it a reference especially for new education programs.

You are welcome to participate on-wiki (even before the Education Session) with your improvements, comments and questions on the document: https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Education/Education_Program_Itinerary

Case Studies clinic

[edit]

The Community Programs team needs new case studies that highlight current and diverse programs whether in GLAM, Education, STEM, Gender Gap, or other programmatic areas. We have created a series of templates for creating consistent case studies, that should make it simpler for you to share your story, and make sure that the best programs get repeated throughout the Wikimedia community. During this clinic we will support you in drafting or developing your case study using the case study templates on outreach.

Session Leader: Alex Stinson
