Re: AWB into the future
[edit]I was going to paste the following as a task in Phabricator
At the moment GenFixes is focused at English Wikipedia. The value of the tool is greater if it can be considered a broader wiki tool as pywikibot has moved to be. It would be great if parts of the architecture of AWB could be moving further towards a universal approach.
As part of that I would like to see GenFixes move towards the ability to be rules set per wiki. This would allow sister wikis to set their specifics which can differ significantly …
then I pulled back, and thought that I would seek your thoughts on how and where AWB is progressing rather than possibly cause a ruckus elsewhere, especially as I don't see a good conversation space outside of setting tasks. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:48, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
billinghurst You are right. This would be very nice to have. We are far behind this right now but it is something it has already been discussed and we have in in the back of our heads. -- Magioladitis (talk) 06:08, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

I want
[edit]I want this edit done a few thousand times. I'd like to delete the template, and then (of course) all of these instances would have to be removed. Bgwhite was set up with AWB at that wiki but is still completely inactive (and I'm still worrying about him, as I'm sure you are, too). Would this be an easy thing for you to do? WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:11, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- Comment excuse me butting in @WhatamIdoing:, but why would we be intervening in a wiki to remove their templates? That template has parameters to modify the output style, and it a community should be able to set their style as they see fit. I would only think that we would take such action if the community wished it. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:07, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- "We" would not be intervening in "a" wiki to remove "their" templates; "I" would be requesting help for "my" wiki to remove "our" template. I wrote the deletion policy at htwiki, so I'm confident that I understand what's involved in that process. Assuming that none of our (very few) regular editors objected to deleting the template, then the next step would be removing the template from a few thousand articles. (If it had only been a few hundred articles, then I could have removed them by hand over time, after I finish the last few pages in w:ht:Kategori:Paj ak lyen fichye kase, but I think that this volume is better handled with AWB or a bot.) I'd rather have someone lined up to deal with that work before nominating the template. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:37, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
Hi WhatamIdoing. Thanks for contacting me. I will do it for you. Yes, I am worried about Bgwhite. I have no contact with him after the "incident" and I am really dissatissfied of how "community" addresses these matters. I spent time to explain that we need a afe enviroment for everyone but I do not see any effort right now on this direction. All I got is that the majority does not recognise that there is a problem to be solved. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:44, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks. I think it will take a few weeks to set this up (assuming nobody objects, etc.). Would you mind poking around the wiki for a bit, and tell me if there are any other problems that ought to be addressed at the same time? I'm particularly interested in accessibility fixes, and of course the death of Tidy always on my mind. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:05, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)
[edit]Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.
If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018
[edit]Greetings,
Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.
Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks if you can, or if you find a delegate. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:56, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
Grazie ancora e a presto,

We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

Wikisporadic Newsletter: September 2022
[edit]Wikisporadic, an Occasional Newsletter for our Germinating Community.
- Oral knowledge We held a session on oral knowledge and Wikispore as part of Options Space at Wikimedia Summit 2022 in Berlin, looking at options with several African affiliates to link out to cultural topics from Wikipedia(s). Some African communities are already doing oral knowledge documentation like the Nigerian community working on oral history as well as the growing Mozambican community working on oral history documentation in Makhuwa language. This is a way to provide more sources as well as digitize some oral parts of their history.
- Wikidata integration There is a plan to install the new UnlinkedWikibase extension, advancing the vision of Wikisprout and full Wikidata integration such as use in infoboxes.
- Movement strategy Using the Cargo and related extensions on Wikispore, work is underway to create a demo of Movement Strategy activities, adapting Baserow data from Wikimedia Summit.
- Halloween event As a Wikidata 10th Birthday event, there is hope to collaborate at the end of October with Wiki Cemeteries User Group on Grave Spore (see discussion), for maps and in-depth coverage of individual graves.

We need your feedback on a tool from the Wikimedia Summit
[edit]Hi! I'm contacting you as one of the participants in the Wikimedia Summit 2022, to kindly ask for your feedback through a 5-10 minute survey to evaluate 'Baserow' (note: the survey is on a Google form).
Baserow was a tool through which participants in the Summit co-created a database of Movement Strategy activities. We hope to learn from you how useful it may be to keep using it in the future to help document and connect on Movement Strategy work.
You are welcome and encouraged to fill out the survey in any language. Your feedback would be very appreciated --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:27, 16 February 2023 (UTC).
