Wikivoyage/New language versions
This page is kept for historical interest. Please do not modify it. All new requests for new Wikivoyage language versions should be made through the process described here. |
Template:Language versions This page is where potential contributors can sign up for a new language version of Wikivoyage. See the rules for language versions for more details about the requirements for starting a new language version. Please add yourself to any language that you would like to help create a Wikivoyage in and also say if you are willing to become an admin. You will be contacted when the language version can be started.
If you prefer to keep your declaration of interest confidential, don't hesitate to send a mail to the association board (vorstand@wikivoyage.org). We ensure respect of your privacy and won't publish your name here.
Old discussions are archived here.
Note: At the current time language versions will be initially created from a backup of Wikitravel content (up-to-date through 02-August-2012), including all images and full article histories.
A minimum of five "support" votes will be needed before a language version is imported to Wikivoyage. Additionally, any language specific patterns that need to be replaced should be posted on tech:Patterns to replace after the Import. The namespaces on tech:New namespaces for language versions also need to be checked and corrected if necessary.
Currently, the following languages have 5+ supporters and will be imported and editable. Feel free to update this list:

[edit]Things around Wikivoyage have changed. The ongoing mass exodus of angry Wikitravel admins and contributors as well as the fact that Ryan had to stop his backing up of Wikitravel contributions have changed the situation dramatically. Experienced WT admins have asked the Wikivoyage Association for migrating the English WT wiki. We would regard this migration as an intermediate state. As soon as the WikiMedia Foundation gives green light for the "Request for Comment", all WV wikis including en: would be migrated to the WMF.
However, starting a migrated wiki on an other site always contains the risk of a community fork. In order to keep this risk as low as possible, Wikivoyage needs to be sure that the migration is supported by the vast majority of the active Wikitravel admins and contributors. Therefore, it is essential to see which active Wikitravel admins and contributors know about the migration in question and who of them would support it.
Please register and sign for "Support", "Oppose" or "Abstain". Also, give a short rationale for your decision. WT admins, please add "(adm)" behind your signature.
See the Migration FAQ and its talk page for more details and the progress.

- Support. I agree with Peter. The migration should be done as early as possible, in order to keep the WT users and their current edits. It is also important to demonstrate that the community can live and work without IB. - Support Yes, a migration would hopefully provide a living 'snapshot' of the current WT content before it degrades any further. This should also provide an opportunity for those articles already effected by inappropriate edits to be patrolled and tidied up in an environment spared of the current deficiencies in the IB model. The ongoing effort of those unaware of the potential abandonment of the IB vehicle could also be captured before they become obscured any further by excessive levels of garbage edits and spam. There is still some very worthwhile editing and content contribution occurring on the WT site, along with a steady encroachment of dross now that many of the watchkeepers have wandered off. If the existing WT community do not have a clear target to transfer their focus to then they may become disheartened and wander away completely. We must understand that for many contributors the arcane nature of all this may leave them cold, even if they ever even come across the links to the information that details it. I also have some lingering concerns that preemptive migration may present the appearance of a fork, rather than a more formalised 'relocation;' of the project. Ryan has 'captured' and archived the project in a quite recent version, however that is a static archive. For the project to survive it may need to be kept alive. If WT is potentially turning into a zombie then perhaps we need to put the project on life support here on WV until the details are hammered out, despite any misinterpretations that may arise from doing that. This could even help out IB (if they ever get their system to function properly) as they could later dump the rescued project content back into their own WT servers scrubbed free of the garbage that is steadily encroaching upon it. We would however need to be certain the WV servers and IT support can deal with the sudden arrival of the wounded beast, otherwise we may end up with two hobbled versions instead of one. There is a lot of transition work to do before the environment will feel 'normal' for the bulk of WT contributors..-- felix 13:21, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

- Support I'm a user on Wikipedia and Wikitravel. I've already expressed my support for the proposed WMF Travel Guide over a month ago. Moving the English WT over here to WV in the interim should (I'm assuming) make the eventual move to WMF a bit easier. Hosting an English travel wiki here also provides a nice security option in the event that the WMF declines to host a travel site, as the IB-owned Wikitravel appears to be beyond saving at this point. - Support with the caveat that it is Wikimedia (NOT Wikipedia) that we are joining and that we do not impose salifist tendency diktats from Wikipedia about NPOV and "No original Research". A travel guide needs up-dates from travellers about destroyed bridges, closed restaurants, bankrupt airlines and new bus routes, etc and often this WILL involve "original research" - ie travellers/contributors will have personally experienced the missing bridge or have had to buy new airline tickets and this timely and accurate information should be incorporated! As editors, we need to be able to choose good places to sleep and eat and, of necessity, this will involve subjective choice! W. Frank 14:25, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

- Support I am Wikitraveler AHeneen. I am still trying to weed through all the Wikitravel/Wikivoyage/Wikimedia-Meta discussions to figure out all that is going on. I realize that the plan is to move WT content to Wikivoyage and then to a WMF site. Comments on the creation of a WMF travel guide ended today and now we'll have to wait for a decision. Would it just be easier to wait for the WMF decision before putting the WT content online for editing and such? Between user accounts & proper credit, the creation of non-German/Italian Wikivoyage travel wikis and then merging into WMF (unified accounts, Wikimedia Commons) sounds messy. And what about Wikitravel/Shared content? I would assume that all inline links to images (etc.) would need to be changed. And since a lot of Wikitravel/Shared content has come from Wikimedia commons, the tech people will have a large job (bots could probably do a lot though). Just some of my thoughts. [edit]*Oppose - As far as I'm concerned this has no sense at all. WT administrators wants to join WP. So, why fork? Non-English versions of Wikitravel are a dead project and WP cannot bring them back to life. Gobbler 21:19, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- WT administrators (along with Wikivoyage administrators) want to join the Wikimedia Foundation, not Wikipedia. Moving here is not viewed by us as a fork, but rather a place to work on improving WT content before a migration—it will make the process easier, and provide Wikitravellers a place to work while wikitravel.org falls apart. And not all non-English language versions are dead at all, and I'm not sure their contributors would appreciate hearing them referred to as such. --Peter Talk 22:05, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- I should add that, if we do not set up here at Wikivoyage, we will be setting up a site elsewhere in preparation for the move to the Wikimedia Foundation. So why not do it here, since we all (I thought?) want to re-join our communities into one? --Peter Talk 22:13, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
::Sorry! I don't wan't to offend anyone. So, wiki-voyageurs are compelled to join WMF because of WT' troubles. is that right? Gobbler 22:23, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Not at all, but it was my understanding that Wikivoyaguers wanted to rejoin with us under the umbrella of the WMF as a new project, with the content brought over from WV :de and :it, and from WT :en, :ru, :ja, :nl, etc. The Wikivoyage Board of Directors have discussed and agreed formally to do this [1]—were you not aware? --Peter Talk 22:36, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Gobbler: I do understand your intentions were entirely honourable in deleting the entire conversation immediately above between yourself and Peter with this recent edit after you were persuaded by the power and logic of his (and others' ?) arguments to change your stance.
However, we have had quite enough of "IBodkins" disappearing conversations at (legacy) Wikitravel and I think we should have higher standards of transparency here on our migrated projects!
I have, therefore, restored the above conversation and taken the liberty of unilaterally interfering with your own words by applying "strike-through". Please consider myself thoroughly chastised for presumptuous interference if you had already agreed with Peter to remove his words as well as your own. W. [edit]Discussion
[edit]I'm not sure where to write this, but is there any indication that the Japanese Wikitravel community intends to move to Wikivoyage? There are three support votes above, but two of the supporters have never edited Japanese Wikitravel, and User:Texugo has not edited the project since 2010. Looking at the Japanese Special:RecentChanges, there doesn't seem to be any major change in edit patterns between July (when the API was enabled and backups were possible) and October (without any obvious way to make a backup). Also, one of the administrators has written on his talk page that he isn't intending to migrate to Wikivoyage.[3]. If the community decides to stay with Internet Brands, a fork isn't going to be successful. --Stefan2 22:28, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- I don't really know, but the :ja contributors have basically been completely non-responsive when I've tried to ask them what's up. (It might be a problem that I'm asking in English...) If they are inclined to stay with IB, I would recommend forking regardless, as long as we have people interested in working on a WV/ja. There is plenty of good content to start with, and presumably :ja Wikimedians could do good things with it. I'm personally a little concerned that continued work on WT/ja could wind up getting lost, as it is not backed up externally anymore by anyone, but it's obviously up to the individual volunteers to determine where and how to work. --Peter Talk 22:38, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I am also concerned about potential loss of information. Due to the disabled API and the disabled Special:Export page, there doesn't seem to be any trivial way to backup updates to the website. --Stefan2 00:17, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
- It would be good to make sure that our :ja colleagues are fully informed about a) the potential to lose their work and b) the fact that they are skipping over the potential to be admins and work to shape the new WMF site. If someone who speaks Japanese could work on that, it would be most helpful. --Peter Talk 13:59, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Please post language specific patterns that need to be replaced. Post on tech:Patterns to replace after the Import#Special to sv:. Also, correct or verify my guesses for the names of the namespaces. -- Hansm 23:30, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
- The namespaces are checked, and OK. there are no patterns specific to the swedish language edition. There is one instance of translation of traveller to resenär but that would be the same translation for voyager. So, as far as I can see, alles klar!. /Johan Jönsson 10:36, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- One side note only, we have a lot of words that are written together as one word. Do the import script take those? For instance we write "wikivoyagesida" as one word on swedish and not as the english two words: "wikivoyage page". /Johan Jönsson 10:43, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- Well, the only thing I can do is to replace patterns without understanding their meaning. We will replace the character string "Wikitravel" by "Wikivoyage" in the general section. But this is probably too less for most languages. In English. for example, the word "Wikitraveller" would be replaced to "Wikivoyageler" what is definitely wrong. Thus, we need to replace "Wikitraveller" by "Wikivoyager" in a language specific section before we apply the general replace rules. It's up to you who know the language to find out what patterns need to be replaced.
- It's not about translating English words like "traveller" into Swedish. It is just how the Swedish text as it comes from Wikitravel needs to be adapted before we can publish it on Wikivoyage.
- -- Hansm 11:05, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- Then it is OK, just felt that I had to check that it really was replacing the character string "Wikitravel" by "Wikivoyage" even if it was embedded in a longer word. Thanks for the good work!/Johan Jönsson 11:09, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

- Yes.
- Btw: Is "Wikivoyageler" really correct in Swedish?
- -- Hansm 21:41, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
- We do not use wikitraveller, wikivoyager or wikivoyagler, we use wikiresenär, much like the dutch. We do not use it much at all. (reminds me of the hamburglar, could this be the wikivoyage mangler?:) /Johan Jönsson 05:47, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
- OK, I see. After having set up the sv: wiki, I have counterchecked it by running a full text search on WT/sv and did find some occurenes of "Wikitraveller". But you are right, this are only very few places and it is all English text. So, everything seems to be fine with our sv:, so far. -- Hansm 06:58, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
