Grants talk:TPS/NestedLoops/Hack42-Hackerspace-Exchange/Report
Add topicQuestion about your outcome
[edit]Dear NestedLoops,
Thank you for submitting this report.
I don't have clarity about what you are submitting to meet the outcome requirement. Can you clarify this?
As you may recall, I posted specific guidelines about what meets the outcome requirement on the talkpage of your original request. Please let me know if you have any questions.
In your original request, you said that your outcomes would be:
- Articles to be created in SQ Wikipedia about Netherlands and more specifically Arnhem
- Articles in NL Wikipedia created about Albania and more specifically Tirana
It sounds like you were not able to meet your goals during the event. You said that the reason was that "The timing didn't allow us to create." Can you give more information about this? Was the timing different than the event organizers led you to believe beforehand?
Thank you for any further information you can provide.
Warm regards,
--Marti (WMF) (talk) 17:30, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
Dear Marti (WMF)
I'm really glad you asked me about this.
The plan of going to the Hack 42 Hackerspace was as described in my application. After the invite we were also informed that there was going to be a slot time for each of us to give a presentation. I decided to give a workshop/talk with my time and also informed the Hackerspace about that, which is posted at the Wiki of Hack 42 (link is in the description of the grant application form). Things for better or worse didn't turn out as such, because the presentation (event) didn't start until late in the evening, indicating that the time for each one of the speakers was max 15 min in which no one opened their laptops. Though this was my first time presenting for Wikimedia Commons and unexpected I was still prepared for that. I had in mind that the important thing was to create a structure of work that could achieve the required goals. I gave the presentation about Wikimedia Commons that consisted of planning a collaboration with the people attending, Dutch and Albanian to organize an Editathon in the upcoming months. And we decided that we're going to organize the Editathon on February where both hackerspaces will work simultaneously on batch uploading pictures of their cities in WikiCommons, and improve/create articles on Wikipedia. This meaning that the outcome might have been more far-sighted as predicted but in my perspective it opens up a variety of work cases. As stated before an important thing is that now we have a very nice collaboration and communication with the Dutch community of openness in Arnhem and we are going to make more projects like this in Wikimedia. I want to make clear that I was prepared for what I described in my report and maybe even more, but if you re-check the schedule in the Wiki of Arnhem Hackerspace ( https://hack42.nl/wiki/OpenLabs_visit_to_Hack42 ) you will see that there was just one hour in the agenda planned for the talk in total, for 8 people, and I wasn't aware of that. Nonetheless it was a great experience that I'm planning to do it more in the Wikimedia community.
I want to thank you for taking the time to see my report.
Best of wishes,

Report accepted
[edit]Dear NestedLoops,
Thank you for providing this clarification. I saw your email indicating that you have felt disheartened by the lack of response before now to your report and your response to my inquiry. I am writing to let you know I am very sorry about the impact to you of the delay. I can imagine why it is disappointing to make an effort to offer your time and energy in contribution to the Wikimedia movement, and then not receive more acknowledgement and recognition of your efforts. I am sorry that this happened. Because of the holidays, our annual staff convention which happens every January and a bad case of the flu, my review of TPS has fallen very behind. I share this with you only to indicate that the delay in response is in no way a reflection on your work, only a reflection of a significant backlog in my work.
In any case, your outreach efforts, and your thoughtfulness about them, are deeply appreciated. Your explanation above is very clear about how you approached your outcomes. I think your focus on building a productive partnership with Dutch and Albanian participants was an excellent way to capitalize on the time you had available during your session.
I gather from your email that you have or will be moving ahead with an editathon based on the networking you did at this event. This is such a wonderful level of initiative in taking advantage of the connections you made at the event. I particularly want you to know how much we do appreciate and value your efforts, which are above and beyond what we tend to see in terms of follow-up to TPS funded participation.
I am accepting this report now and hope we may see you again in this program, in spite of the frustration you have experienced in this process.
Warm regards,
Marti
