APG approved in the amount of $116,296

[edit]

Congratulations! Your grant is approved in the amount of $116,296, with a grant term starting 1 January 2021 and ending 31 December 2021.

This is a significant increase from last year, with good reason. We recognize the growth achieved by Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) in its last year and also want to provide more holistic support to its staffing. We agree with the committee’s assessment of your organization’s impact with institutional GLAM partnerships and overall community growth. Your organizational work on open innovation is demonstrated through your support of developing gamified apps, a web semantic book, a reconstruction process of images, and a collaborative mapping of the institution to prove your ability to successfully execute programs of high value to the community and the general public at large using the Wikimedia projects.

In response to the pandemic, WMB will be planning offsite community events that incorporate remote participation. We appreciate your education programs designed around building a network of learning resources for educators interested in Wikimedia collaborations. Wiki Movimento Brasil endeavors to address important knowledge and participation gaps about the Bahia region with a program Wiki Loves Bahia program involving photo contests and edit-a-thons in public universities. While this endeavor may carry more risks than other programs, these risks are worthwhile as the program is directly in service of building better knowledge equity about a region where public information is hard to access, and can be more adequately represented.

Overall, the annual plan proposal is well structured and has been clearly defined in four verticals with a focus on training workshops and edit-a-thons, community events, Education, and Wiki Loves Bahlia programs. We would like to see Wiki Movimento Brasil focusing attention more on organizational needs in this coming year, and request the following changes:

  • The targeted shared metrics seem ambitious with an increase of over 300% from last year and we would like to recommend decreasing the targets in your metrics sheet with regards to uncertainty around the ongoing pandemic.
  • In terms of your staffing, we are excited to see how the addition of a Community Manager impacts your programs and community development. Additionally, we also support the requested resources for insurance and security for the existing staff members.
  • As a means for supporting the organization's growth, we endorse requested funding for the administrative operations expenses and Wikimania travel for no more than two (2) representatives, as this is consistent with how we fund other affiliates for attendance at important regional and movement-wide events.

We wish Wiki Movimento Brasil all the best in your endeavors and look forward to supporting your planned work in 2021.

Best regards from the SAPG Committee and Staff, Siarus1074 (talk) 17:34, 15 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Siarus1074 and I JethroBT (WMF): Thanks a lot! --a gratitude we extend to Committee and the WMF officers. Wiki Movimento Brasil is a thriving affiliate, and our accomplishments are of course impacted by the level of support and quality of feedbacks we receive from the movement. We are truly grateful. I respond to your comments below:
  • This is the first year-long support we have received, as in 2020 we were funded for eight months, and this extended time frame leads to --as you said-- a bigger budget and more ambitious goals. Metrics that were presented went through internal discussions, and informed by your feedback on the "increase of over 300% from last year" I will go back to a round of deliberation within our group. Is there a deadline for eventual revisions of metrics?
  • Thank you for supporting the decision to provide insurance and security for our staff members. This is really important in our context!
  • We appreciate the support for administrative operations expenses and at most two Wikimania travels. Let's hope the global situation will permit such travels.
Let me also say I have been particularly impressed by the sense of participatory, caring governance of the sAPG process this year. We are really grateful! Most importantly: I hope everyone is safe in your area and community. Best, --Joalpe (talk) 14:26, 16 December 2020 (UTC) (on behalf of Wiki Movimento Brasil)Reply
@Joalpe: Thank you for this feedback, and glad to hear your experience with the grant program has been productive. In terms of the revisions to your metrics, there was no specific deadline set. Would it be reasonable to have these revision prepared by the end of January, or do you think more time will be needed? I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 14:49, 17 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
@I JethroBT (WMF): Hi! We just had a meeting to revise our metrics in order to address your feedback. Can I add them to the metrics spreadsheet already? Best, EricaAzzellini (talk) 21:55, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@EricaAzzellini: Certainly, please do. Thanks for letting us know about the changes! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:31, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@I JethroBT (WMF): Done! You can check out the new metrics both on Meta and on the metrics worksheet. Please, let us know if there's anything else you think we should update. Cheers! EricaAzzellini (talk) 18:01, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Committee comments from Siarus1074

[edit]

Hey now,

You are doing great work. I like that you have been able to continue forward movement during the pandemic and engaged your diversity plan through online events. I was wonering what progress have you made towards the following parts of your plan:

2. Increase the number of people who identify as brown or black.

4. Increase representation of people from Brazilian indigenous groups in the WMB.

5. Increase representation of people with intellectual or motor disabilities involved in group activities.

Siarus1074 (talk)

Hi, Siarus1074!
Thank you so much for your question. I'm happy to answer about that topic, which I believe is a very important one for the UG.
2. Increase the number of people who identify as brown or black.
Our strategy has been twofold. Firstly, we have organized events that have specifically addressed racial biases on Wikimedia. An example is the Editatona Artes+Feminismos - Arte & Arquivo. Secondly, we have tried to work with already existing groups and establish partnerships to increase engagement with Wikimedia projects. An example is Coletiva NaPupila, which is an online curatorial research hub that, among other activities, try to diversify the universe of art in Brazil.
4. Increase representation of people from Brazilian indigenous groups in the WMB.
This is particularly challenging, and I do not think we have been able to really connect with people from Brazilian indigenous groups. Nevertheless, we led two edit-a-thons on Brazilian indigenous groups and one of them, the Os indígenas no museu, was an opportunity to critically discuss cultural colonialism and decolonization in the context of GLAM-Wiki initiatives.
5. Increase representation of people with intellectual or motor disabilities involved in group activities.
Challenges here are also tremendous, as people with intellectual or motor disabilities --at least in our context-- face an intersection of oppressions and exclusions. Our strategy here has been to partner up with a GLAM and an organization called Museus Acessíveis to create an environment for exchange between Wikimedians, cultural activists, and educators. This exchange has taken the form of an ongoing community capacity building to collaboratively create audio descriptions of Brazilian artwork. We just had the first of eight working sessions on Monday, and 34 people have joined, with around 8 with motor disabilities. In these sessions, we will work on developing audio descriptions to be shared on-wiki, initially on a Wikibook. The idea is that this gathering will lead to sustained exchanges.
In August, we also received funding from the Creative Commons Open Education Platform to help improve the accessibility of our content for Education. Also through Creative Commons, we responded to your request to lead discussions on accessibility in the context of the OpenGlam statement.
I would also like to point out that, next year for the Wikipedia 20 celebrations, we will hold the Wiki-Lusophone Festival and these three topics will be central to the discussions of the event, in particular the letter of intent we intend to create.
I hope I have addressed your points and I am available to answer any further questions. -- GFontenelle (WMB) (talk) 17:57, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

WikidataCon 2021

[edit]

Hello all.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Information I am sharing here is not publicly announced yet (it should be in the coming days on the Wikidata mailing-list): Wiki Movimento Brasil has been selected to co-host with WMDE WikidataCon in 2021. Yay! Events will take place simultaneously in Berlin and São Paulo in October.

I am sharing this information directly and earlier on to the sAPG officers and committee as it will have an impact on our annual plan and might be taken into consideration when you assess our organizational capacity. It is a big event; and it is the first time our group will host a global Wikimedia conference, and it is the first time WikidataCon comes to the Global South. This is super exciting!

Our application is currently under evaluation (at least I think it is), and assuming it would be inappropriate to edit the grant application at this point I have decided to bring the information on our co-hosting WikidataCon to the talk page. Let me know if I should edit the main page.

Greetings from a sunny morning in São Paulo. --Joalpe (talk) 11:45, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

PS: Siarus1074, I acknowledge having received your questions. We will reply asap.
