Round 1 2017 decision

[edit]

Congratulations! Your proposal has been selected for a Project Grant.

The committee has recommended this proposal and WMF has approved funding for the full amount of your request, 4300 USD

Comments regarding this decision:
The committee is glad to support this partnership with Goge Africa. We appreciate that you have an experienced Wikimedian in this role, with a team of volunteers to offer support.

Prior to finalizing a contract, we would like to further discuss the details of your budget, and we ask that you provide a job description specifically outlining the activities of the WiR role with this partner organization.

Please note that we consider funding for WiR activities to be short-term. Grant funding for WiRs is not intended to support ongoing workflows in an organization, but to leverage the partnership to build a sustainable platform that ensures outcomes long after the WiR has completed their service. Your work will be to ensure that every action is taken to secure long-term outcomes that do not depend on ongoing grant funding.

Next steps:

  1. You will be contacted to sign a grant agreement and setup a monthly check-in schedule.
  2. Review the information for grantees.
  3. Use the new buttons on your original proposal to create your project pages.
  4. Start work on your project!

Upcoming changes to Wikimedia Foundation Grants

Over the last year, the Wikimedia Foundation has been undergoing a community consultation process to launch a new grants strategy. Our proposed programs are posted on Meta here: Grants Strategy Relaunch 2020-2021. If you have suggestions about how we can improve our programs in the future, you can find information about how to give feedback here: Get involved. We are also currently seeking candidates to serve on regional grants committees and we'd appreciate it if you could help us spread the word to strong candidates--you can find out more here. We will launch our new programs in July 2021. If you are interested in submitting future proposals for funding, stay tuned to learn more about our future programs.

(A) Impact potential
  • Does it have the potential to increase gender diversity in Wikimedia projects, either in terms of content, contributors, or both?
  • Does it have the potential for online impact?
  • Can it be sustained, scaled, or adapted elsewhere after the grant ends?
6.1
(B) Community engagement
  • Does it have a specific target community and plan to engage it often?
  • Does it have community support?
6.5
(C) Ability to execute
  • Can the scope be accomplished in the proposed timeframe?
  • Is the budget realistic/efficient ?
  • Do the participants have the necessary skills/experience?
6.5
(D) Measures of success
  • Are there both quantitative and qualitative measures of success?
  • Are they realistic?
  • Can they be measured?
4.9
Additional comments from the Committee:
  • Would like more clarity about what this grant intends to promote. Is it trying to promote more content for a specific language? or topic? or more volunteers?
  • The project fits with Wikimedia's strategic priorities and has a potential for online impact. The sustainability is unclear because it is unclear if any stable relationship between Goge Africa and Wikimedia will result from the this WiR project.
  • Its great that a partnership like this has been secured. Will complement Wikimedia projects in the country.
  • The project is in rather good position to create impact, and as any other WiR position fits well with our strategic priorities.
  • While 2500 uploads and 200 articles are mentioned, this alone is not a sufficient criteria. Would like to see specific goals in the request. For example I would like to see the grant include a goal to promote more volunteers.
  • The approach is iterative - uploading more images to Commons. Risks are unclear as there is no track record for the participant or the organization. The success can be measured.
  • Would like more clarity about what is being proposed. What specifically is meant by "GogeAfrica agreed to donate contents for this project". Does this mean WiR will write and upload the files by self?
  • Good iterative projects (there were many successful WiR elsewhere), strong adviser will most likely help to make this project successful.
  • The project can be accomplished in the requested six months. The budget is probably realistic though it is not clear for whom he will be buying refreshments. The experience and skills of the participant are unclear.
  • The current plan is not quite clear to me, because I don't know at this moment if there will be one or more WiR's.
  • The budget is realistic, scope is reasonable, and participants (+adviser) are skillful enough.
  • There is no evidence of community engagement so far. It feels more like one person is spearheading alone. It is also unclear how Anthere would be advising the grant.
  • The community engagement is low.
  • Would have loved to see an endorsement of the names of the people mentioned to show their commitment on the project.
  • Cannot be accessed by any of the three sources in Community engagement section so it is unclear if there is community support or not.
  • There is reasonable community support and the project does support diversity by working with underrepresented content.
  • For me to support this, there needs to be a greater evidence of community support.
  • I am inclined to support this project but the main problem is that the project appears to be aimed mainly at uploading new images to Commons, not at building a sustainable partnership between Wikimedia and Goge Africa. In addition I am unable to assess whether the applicant has necessary skills to execute the project and if Goge Africa is a reliable partner - these should be checked before the project is funded.
  • The budget needs to be clearly broken down to explain how many WiRs are going to be present, hourly charge, etc., and to show that realistic targets have been set.
  • I'm worried that organizations that are not willing to fund, even partially, their Wikimedian in residence will not provide enough resources (time from their staff), for the project to be successful.
  • A rather good project, with key participants already having good links with the community via Wiki Loves Women project. The project is reasonable enough to be supported.

Request for Project extension

[edit]

Dear Grant Team,

We are requesting for extension on the agreed final date of the completion of this project for additional three months. This will help to take care of the initial months wasted. This is due to the non availability of our partner as a result of other commitments. We hope the project will resume before the end of this month. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 10:05, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Olaniyan Olushola. Thank you for this update. The extension is approved. However, please do also provide a more detailed update on the Timeline tab. It will be helpful to know what has been done, what the delays have been and how this has impacted how you are planning the project. Originally it was planned for 7 months and it sounds like the actual residency will be three months. How does this affect your goals and measures of success? Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:00, 30 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Alex Wang (WMF) Thank you for the request for explanation. The change will provide enough time to plan and executes all the laid down works. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 22:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Olaniyan Olushola. To confirm, the new grant end date is 31 March 2018. A midpoint report is due 15 Jan 2018 along with monthly updates on the Timeline tab. The final report is due 30 April 2018. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:54, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
