Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Hausa Wikimedians/Movement Strategy Implementation Plan for Hausa communities
Add topicOverall Positive Feedback
[edit]This application from the Hausa Wikimedians is a good one to see. This grants application demonstrates the community’s interest in developing the leadership and capacities of community members. It is also encouraging to see this drive that encourages the community to think of, and develop solutions to what can be considered a major priority - Skill Development. Feedback For Improvement
[edit]Project plan and outcomes
- It is important for the application team to provide additional clarity about which specific challenge this project aims to address. The application alludes to two potential tracks, a) identifying the needs of the community regarding Skills and Leadership Development, and developing a plan to meet those needs or b) identifying the barriers to acceptance and retention, and developing a plan for raising awareness about Wikipedia. If the project team can be more specific about the “problem”, then the project objectives and the outcomes expected, would be much clearer.
- Within the Hausa communities, what previous activities and/or ongoing efforts have happened around leadership and skills development, or awareness-raising? How does this project complement or build on those efforts?
- What are the projected outcomes from this project? Please provide details on the
Community engagement
- About the outreach activities, how is the project team planning to mitigate the risk of overburdening the community members?

Hi, @YPam (WMF), Thank you for the feedback and for following up with our proposal. Please, find below our response to your feedback for improvement on the Project plan and the Community engagement.
- Yes, sorry for the mix-up! The project's main focus is to address the first track as you referenced, a) identifying the needs of the community regarding Skills and Leadership Development, and developing a plan to meet those needs' but by looking at the depth of the project and the communities to be involved (Hausa, Fulfulde and Kanuri) these might transcend to the other track which will lead us in b) identifying the barriers to acceptance and retention, and developing a plan for raising awareness about Wikipedia seeing that apart from the Hausa projects which have an active volunteer community the other two projects are still at a very low level with a few activities in them, the Fulfulde is active but with no active volunteer community and most of the contributors here are not native of the language that's why most of the revisions are minor edits and has no growth in content creation, while the Kanuri project is still in the incubator with a few or no activity, so these communities are the ones to benefit the most of this second track of awareness about Wikimedia projects in those languages.
- There have been previous engagements around strategic planning within our user group in the past few years on leadership and skills development efforts, this project is a continuation of those efforts and part of the revive Hausa Wikimedians User Group 2022 planning, which we are working to restructure the group into a formal entity in Nigeria with a well-structured organization. Right now, we are currently processing application for registering the Usergroup as Wikimedia Hausa with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Nigeria as a non-profit charitable organisation which will help us in being more credible in the society as well as attracting more volunteers and partners and boost our public confidence in promoting the movement mission activities.
- What are the projected outcomes from this project? Please provide details on the
- Updated on the grant page.
- Regarding the outreach activities, we plan to adopt a local participatory approach, where we will engage volunteers who live within or are closer to the communities we are going to work with so that it will help increase the project efficiency and curtail societal barriers that might hinder flexibility in terms of communications, cultural differences etc through the involvement of the main beneficiaries who live within the project communities. This is why all the translators we are going to work with are natives of those languages and yes, some of the volunteer time will be compensated as provided in the budget.
We hope this helps in clarifying the above observations, we are ready to provide more clarifications. Thanks for your work in advancing Wikimedia movement strategy planning. Em-mustapha talk 18:51, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
