Questions from WMF

[edit]

Hello Amandameeks, thank you again for submitting your request for a Rapid Grant on behalf of the Cline Library! It sounds like you're well-equipped to have this Art+Feminism event underway, and we are glad to see that you've planned this through some help from A+F and your university! It's also great to see the follow-up surveys to help determine future events based on the outcomes of this event. We have a couple questions and suggestions before making a decision about this proposal:

  1. Could you please identify the experienced editors who would be in attendance to help facilitate this editathon?
  2. The budget is on the higher end for what we normally fund for food and drinks at an editathon for 40 people. Would you provide a breakdown of these costs so that we could have a better understanding of them, in case I may have calculated incorrectly (which is entirely possible)?
  3. Finally, I wanted to note that 80 created/improved articles is an ambitious target to achieve! While we appreciate this goal, we wanted to note the difficulty for editors, especially newer ones, to navigate Wikipedia's complex policies and that expectations for successful edits should be set to ensure that they gain comfort and confidence in this online environment.

Thank you again, and we look forward to your responses! Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 00:14, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Amandameeks,

Thank you again for taking our suggestions and updating your budget and metrics. We are happy to support NAU Cline Library's project for US$800. While this grant is expensive for an edit-a-thon of this size and scope, we do appreciate that Northern Arizona University is donating the venue space and staff time of the event organizers, and recognize the constraints of university policy. We are glad to see you've taken the initiative in securing external funding from Art+Feminism, and encourage you to continue seeking external partners to secure more in-kind donations to offset these expenses in future events.

We will also be interested to see feedback and follow-up with the participants post-editathon, and encourage you to make a plan with your co-organizers/facilitators for supporting participants after the event. We have found that one-off editathons do not often result in retaining new editors without plans for continued engagement and online mentorship.

We will be in touch shortly with further details. Thank you for your work, and we look forward to learning the outcomes of this project in your grant report! Best, Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 22:59, 8 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
