Thank you for this report and congrats on a successful Wiki Loves Monuments! We have a few questions/comments:
- Can you please provide a link to the web tool provided to the jury? It would be great to see if it's something that can be used by other countries.
- There were significantly more participants this year as compared to 2013. Do you have any idea of why this is? Different outreach/ads?
- It's a shame that almost 194 photos weren't correctly labeled by their uploaders. What can be done in the future to decrease this number? Better instructions?
- Please absorb the remaining funds -- perhaps use it for your next meet-up?
Thanks again! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 05:15, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, Alex!
- Here it is. If you want to try it, please use test as token. The tool isn't pretty, but it can be used to quickly approve/discard images for a first selection round. I initially thought to make it available for other countries, but I decided to focus on getting it ready for our contest first, so I hard-coded it for WLM-CO. However, I think I would be able to modify it so it can be used by other countries (and make it less ugly in the process :P).
- There are several factors that probably caused this effect:
- In 2012 and 2013, the contest had a very limited monument list (about 1100 valid monuments in all the country, most of them located in main cities only). In 2014, we allowed any monument to be valid. I think this is the main reason for the increased participation.
- In 2013, the contest didn't have prizes. This year, we had (however, it's important to note that we had far betters numbers than 2013 even before revealing prizes).
- I'm not sure about how 2013 communication and organization were handled, as I didn't organize WLM that year. In 2014, we had an active organization team, and we got help from a previous year participant who organized an independent local photo-tour in her city.
- I don't really understand why these people didn't label the photos correctly, as we mentioned in several places that the "location code" was necessary. Maybe a combination of more clear instructions and a big "remember to put the location code" sign in the contest main page could work. We'll probably have to brainstorm ideas about this, and also ask other countries if they had similar problems and their solutions.
- Thanks!
- I think that's it. If you have more questions or need some clarification, don't hesitate to contact me again. Cheers! --Racso ¿¿¿??? 20:54, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your responses Racso ¿¿¿???. Maybe you can send a note to the WLM mailing list with a link to the tool to see if folks are interested in using it? I'm not sure how other countries do their judging, but it seems like it would be great to make it available for other countries. Good ideas about the location labeling. I'm going to write a learning pattern for WLM and will be sure to include that. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:57, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
- [User talk:Racso|Racso ¿¿¿???]] I just added your comment about making it very clear that images must be submitted with location codes to Create and event page learning pattern. Please feel free to add other advice about creating effective event pages for photo contests, especially in situations where there is no official monument list. Also, would you be willing to share your jury tool in a learning pattern? I can give you more details about what information would be needed to share it. --KHarold (WMF) (talk) 09:25, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
