Add topicImpact Section Missing
[edit]Thank you for your report. It looks like there might be some missing information under the Impact section. If so, please add the statistics mentioned. Thanks. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
- This must have been fatigue. Impact is the most exciting aspect of our report. This was the most impactful project we have ever had as WM-ZA! I have added analysis and charts on statistics and impact. I trust that it is acceptable.--Thuvack (talk) 07:50, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for this report
[edit]Thank you for submitting your detailed report. Congratulations on an impressive number of uploads during WLM ZA and the high engagement of women throughout the competition. We are especially encouraged that ~9% of the uploads during the competition are already integrated on wiki projects! Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
We have a few questions and look forward to your response.
- Launch event: Do you have a sense of why there was such low attendance and what you would do differently in the future to ensure better participation? Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Strategy: Did you have a specific outreach strategy for encouraging women to participate in WLM or did this happen on its own? Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Upload marathons: Your social media statistics are impressive and I understand your reasoning for cancelling the provincial upload marathons. However, aren't upload marathons still worthwhile in that you can interact personally with new wikimedians and collect contact info/usernames in order to create lasting contacts and to be able to measure their participation going forward? It would be helpful to know your opinion on this. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Budget: Was the lack of funds spent on demonstration stations and press kits for the launch event due to low turnout? The requested funds in USD on the summary budget table are actually the used funds amount. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
- Evaluation: It is good practice for WLM projects to develop measures of success around the number of photos integrated on wiki projects X months after the event. You can track this using the Glamorous tool. We have run the tool and about ~9% of the photos uploaded during WLM ZA are integrated on wiki sites, which is a good number! - Hi Alex, thanks for the response. Herewith my answers to the above feedback.
- Low attendance of Launch
- Mainly the weather conspired against us. Cape Town had a three week rain spate and a day before our launch it cleared, so people opted to go to the beach with their families. Anyways at least that's how it looked to us. I also felt that the venue ambiguity had a hand, there are two Truth Coffee in Cape Town, and some of those who turned out did say that they got lost to the other truth coffee and had to make their way back to the correct venue. We don't know how many decided to just go back home.
- Hi Alex, thanks for the response. Herewith my answers to the above feedback.
- Outreach strategy for encouraging women to participate in WLM
- At the moment, we believe that this is simply a reflection of the heritage community in South Africa. It is predominantly female at ages between 40 and 60. This year's event will give us a chance to test this as we have secured the interest and assistance of the photographic society, which is a male dominated industry. We will see how this dynamic changes the profile of the participants. We are however confident that we will increase female participation as more an more continue to like our Facebook page.
- Upload marathons
- We intend to hold PUMs in two provinces outside of Gauteng and Western Cape, ie Eastern Cape and Free State. We have foot soldiers who are keen to assist with the PUM, so it makes sense to do it there. Picture hunts will still be arranged in Cape Town and Johannesburg, dependant on interest.
- Demonstration stations and press kits Spending
- We did not receive confirmation from media houses so we decided not to do press kits. We also each had our laptops for the launch and decided to use those instead. Going forward we will reduce the number of press kits that we plan.
- Evaluation
- Thanks for the heads up, I am going to do more evaluations for the chapter projects as Theresa starts to take over project admin. I will indeed use this and other metric tools.
- I trust that the above is acceptable.--Thuvack (talk) 20:29, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Report Accepted
[edit]Thank you for the above response. This report is accepted. It sounds like being very clear about location is a good learning for next year. Your intensified media outreach efforts will also hopefully help increase participation. I'd be happy to talk with you, or put you in touch with the Learning and Evaluation Team, to talk about the various metric tools available. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:19, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
