WMF comments

Thank you for your proposal. Given your past success in WLM contests generating a large number of images, it is good to see that this year the contest is focusing on “missing media rather than massive media.” How are things going so far? We certainly look forward to hearing about the lessons you learn from changing the focus. Please see the comments below.

Goals

[edit]
  1. The goal for number of participants is much lower than last year, which was 525. Is there a reason that you anticipate that fewer people will participate?
  2. What is your strategy for reaching the goal of 826 municipalities photographed? Have you provided participants with guidelines of what to photograph in the missing municipalities?
  3. Your goals include 100 new monuments photographed. Can you add information about how many monuments in the list are unphotographed?
  4. Using the http://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous.php tool, it looks like 1285 or 5% of images from last year’s contest were used on different Wikipedias. If you meet your current goals, that would be 4% of images in use. Given that this is the fourth year of WLM in Spain, we would like to see an increase the percentage of images in use to between 5% and 10%.
  5. Last year you were not able to track the number of new users who participated, do you have a plan for how to do that this year?

Other Comments

[edit]
  1. Prizes: Is there a reason why you have chosen to give out external hard drives for top prizes this year?
  2. Your report last year notes that social media and blog posts were important for reaching new users. Will you be doing social media outreach this year?
  3. Do you have a plan for the transfer of images from Flickr to Commons that will avoid challenges from last year?
  4. Will you be hosting any ‘Wiki Takes’ events, workshops or a writing challenge this year?
  5. Have you made any changes to upload instructions so that more users will add the correct information for each photo?

Please let us know if you have any questions about these comments or want to discuss your proposal further.

Hello Kacie, please, find above the answers to your questions in the same order:
Goals
  1. The reason is that as we have reoriented the contest to chase those monuments (and also municipalities) without a photograph, therefore we expect to discorauge a part of the potentially interested people to upload pictures of the places around them from which we already have lots of pictures.
  2. Sure we did, we have tables and maps of all municipalties missing, see the overview here and here an example of table and map. By the way, for the missing monuments we did exactly the same: overview, example of table and map. Those overviews are rather for internal purposes, the main flow of visits is coming from our WLM web where we have also this table for municipalties and this one for monuments missing (see the column "Listas sin foto en español" in bold). Furthermore we have contacted hundreds of media and photography associations everywhere in Spain. To make all this easier for newcomers we have invested and are still investing a lot of time to add in each row of those tables the dedicated Commons category (along with the code of the monument) for the municipalities/monuments, so that just clicking on the camera upload icon all needed data for categories aren description is already automatically available.
  3. We haven't performed any reliable counting, we are talking about 4000 monuments without pictures in the current list, but we are also aware that there are many more monuments (somewhere between 1000 - 10000, I guess) which we haven't listed yet due to lack of capacity to accomplish this task as we'd like (bear in mind that we've no staff and everything we have is voluteers' work). I'm pretty sure, though, that we'll easily reach the 100 new monuments barrier, and based on the work done with the list we are ready to organize additional activities to keep on closing this gap.
  4. I agree, 4% is pretty conservative. We can double the target to 8%. I wouldn't feel uncomfortable doing that as we are chasing for new material that we are not using yet, therefore there are no other pictures concurring in Commons with the new ones. Should I edit the grant page with that figure?
I want to state that this is the 5th year of the contest in Spain, not the 4th. But anyway, in one hand we have that getting more pictures of monuments without a photo already on Wikimedia Commons the amount of pictures used should be higher, but in the other hand, pictures of monuments with an existing photo are more difficult to be used, because the articles can already have a photo. Yes, in case that the photo is better or it shows a new detail it could be included. But we can, as Diego said, increase the target. --Millars (talk) 11:37, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  1. Good point and the honest answer to that is: no, we don't have right now a method to do that automatically. As there is need everywhere for such a statistics I was wondering whether we can hope some help from the WMF there?
I tried to use Wikimetrics but honestly, I was a complete disaster. I think that the tool is very useful but we need more clear guidelines. But I'll try to use it or at least that one of Wikimedia Spain members try to know this figure. --Millars (talk) 11:37, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Other comments
  1. Because that is something photographs can always use. Actually we also offered that prize last year (2nd and 3rd prize).
  2. Yes, sure, that's always part of the standard package. We publish a press note and send it to 800 medias, and a blog entry that we spread in social networks.
In addition we publish regular twits and messages on Facebook about the contest. We also spread the word in several Facebook groups and mailing lists. --Millars (talk) 11:37, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
  1. Last year our bot expert was suddenly not available when we needed him. We have now additional colleagues (at least 4) that can accomplish this task. It worked very good during Wiki Loves Earth.
  2. We are planning always this kind of activities but in the contest of WLM only a Wiki Takes in Ayora (Valencia, on Sept 19-20h) and in Granada (Sept. 19th) and also some promotion a the end of September in Madrid. Still, the organizing team will keep on working on improving the uploaded material in a continuous manner. With the work done so far the a bit more coming we have a very robust base to organize Wiki Takes in those regions with lots of missing municipalities or monuments, but we haven't had time to accomplish this short-term. It will surely come.
  3. I already explained this topic in the bullet point #2 of the first paragraph. We have invested most of time in improving the lists with categories, coordinates and additional monuments and created 2 wikiprojects in the Spanish Wikipedia to prepare the missing municipalies and monuments to ease the work of those helping to close the gap.
I hope to have given answer to your questions, if not, don't hesitate to ask, thanks! best, Poco a poco (talk) 20:35, 9 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi User:Millars, Thank you for responding to our comments. It is incredible that your community has participated in WLM for 5 years now, please excuse my counting error. You must have so many good ideas that I hope you will share in the new Photo Contest Toolkit. It is great that you agree to focus on getting 8% of images from this contest used, and we understand the difficulty of doing this when so many articles already have images. Hopefully your efforts to get participants to photograph new monuments will make this goal easier to achieve. Please contact Amanda to discuss solutions to Wikimetrics problems and come up with a plan to count new users using some tool. In your report, it would be good to see an account of how many municipalities and monuments from your existing list have been photographed. We really appreciate all of the comments and review by the GAC, thank you to everyone who took time to write, improve or support this proposal.--KHarold (WMF) (talk) 19:07, 10 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Previous Competitions

[edit]

I guess the track of the Wikimedia Spain should have been kept in mind. You should have noted that Wikimedia Spain organized Wiki Loves Monuments in 2014. It has been 1 year now and they have not delivered any prizes till now. I oppose this grant funding. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 15:42, 20 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I thought I sent the data to WMF but I checked my e-mail and I can't find it. May be I made a mistake and I've never sent it. I'll send the mail tomorrow. I'm very sorry. The prizes sent directly by WMES were sent without problem, only the item of Wikimedia have to be sent. --Millars (talk) 13:12, 22 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request for minor changes

[edit]

Hello @KHarold (WMF): and @AWang (WMF):, as I wrote in Grants talk:PEG/WM ES/Wiki Loves Earth Spain and Portugal 2015, we asked for some extra days to complete the report. It is almost ready, but some extra days provide us time to finish better. We want also ask a minor change in the budget. We asked for 50 € for leaflets and stickers and we actualy spent 65.99. Could we include it? --Millars (talk) 21:39, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Millars. Thanks for the update. Please let us know when you expect to submit the report. In terms of the leaflets, do you have remaining funds from somewhere else in the budget? If not, you can use unspent funds from WLE to cover the extra 15.99€. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 21:54, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hello AWang. Yes, we have remaining funds in this project. I have a lot of work these weeks, so, it could be possible April 17 as a date to have the reports, or is it too late? Another question is that the members who bought the prizes combined the prices in a different way, but they respectec the total amount. --Millars (talk) 15:22, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi Millars. April 17th is fine. It is fine if the total price for prizes remained the same. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 15:18, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
