- Hello Ocassi, thank you for your message. I have posted my proposal. I dont know what more I have to do and I dont know how I update its status in Probox. I hope from our editors soon someone will endorse my proposal.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 17:22, 29 September 2014 (UTC )
- My apologies, you are already proposed! Ocaasi (talk) 17:32, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
Breakdown
[edit]I'm from Wikimedia Community User Group Pakistan and I've been told about this grant request so thought of making a comment. The grantee has said four students but he's seeking US$ 5,000 for four computers which is too much in my opinion. A good enough laptop cost less than 500$ in Pakistan Or are you looking to buy them MacBooks? Anyways, a breakdown is required. Also, I would like to see what is measure of success. --Saqib (talk) 17:00, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
- Mr. Saqib, it was better before commenting if you read my proposal carefully. --Khalid Mahmood (talk) 16:47, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
Moving to a Project and Event Grant
[edit]Hi Khalid Mahmood, Thanks for this thoughtful submission! Based on an initial read of your proposal, we believe this project would be a better fit for our Project and Event Grants program, which commonly funds expenses for in-country editor appreciation campaigns and Wikipedia promotion. Assuming you'd like to proceed, my colleague Alex Wang can help you to move your proposal page into a Project and Events Grant, and I expect she will be well-placed to advise on what has worked well for similar outreach projects in the past, what type of expenses we're generally able to fund, and so forth. I'm updating the status of this proposal to "draft," meanwhile, to allow space for that discussion to move forward outside of the IEG review timeline. Please let us know if you have any questions! Best wishes, Siko (WMF) (talk) 00:18, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Discussing a Project and Event Grant
[edit]Hi Khalid Mahmood. It's great that you're so passionate about promoting the Punjabi Wikipedia in Pakistan! I would be happy to discuss your proposal further and a potential Project and Event Grant. In the past, we have funded prizes for photo and writing competitions and merchandise to reward volunteer efforts. However, we generally do not fund the purchase of laptops for volunteers. We would like to support excellent editors, but giving away laptops is not sustainable as a funding mechanism.
We also have not found general outreach programs to have much impact on recruiting new volunteers or creating online impact. I would encourage you to explore outreach activities that may have more measurable impact. For example, you could organize an online writing competition for the Punjabi Wikipedia, promoting it through social media and a geo-targeted notice to editors in Pakistan. You could apply for a grant to fund the prizes for the competition. Here is an example of a recent grant (that we have funded multiple years) on the Arabic Wikipedia: Arabic Wikipedia Producer Prize. Additional information on writing competitions can be found here.
If you're hoping to engage more students and professors, I would suggest contacting Anna Koval, on the Wikipedia Education Program team, who can help develop some ideas. I think you're especially well poised, as a professor, to do outreach in universities (or at least your university). We are happy to fund merchandise like t-shirts and pens to reward students who show progress and commitment in their editing.
This recent grant for Project Quebec Wikisource, might also be a good reference. We supported the production of Wikisource buttons and t-shirts in coordination with introduction to editing workshops, GLAM partnership discussions, and the organization of monthly editing workshops. New users will receive buttons and t-shirts will be awarded to new users who become very active editors in their first month. We have found this type of rewards program to be more effective than giving merchandise for general awareness building.
We are happy to discuss the above or any ideas you have to make you project proposal as successful as possible. Please feel free to respond here or contact us at grants"at"wikimedia.org. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 22:37, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
- OK Alex Wang I withdraw from the part of proposal where I requested some laptops for committed editors who have not their own computers but I request to merge the money allocated (2000 $) for laptops in other parts of proposals. Thank you for showing me other projects for guidance. Pakistan is a very big country but we dont have enough writers for our wikipedia. Majority of editors from Pakistan consider it easy and comfortable to write at English Wikipedia which is already saturated. Punjabi is the mother tongue of 70% Pakistanis but it is not taught in schools, so it is difficult for them to write in it. It was/is a herculean task for me to start a wikipedia in Punjabi and I am still watching and editing it daily. It is interesting to note that in the world Punjabi speakers are equal to German speakers. But although I have gathered around a million clicks a month but still serious editors are few. Here I need Wikimedia Foundation to support me to enlarge this editor base through this Promotion Program. I am hopeful that I can mobilize more editors through this program and could create more awareness. I am in contact with T.Shirt and Pen manufactures to provide us the things we need. I have in mind that I will do and how I will distribute these items for the awareness of our Wiki Projects and Wikimedia Foundation. I am already too much indebted to the Foundation for providing a platform that is helping our language and making it a modern language. Thank you.--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 14:32, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Khalid Mahmood. Thank you for the update. Once you've developed your ideas for a program, please submit a grant request here: Project and Event Grant submission and notify us by sending an email to grants"at"wikimedia.org. Again, we don't support general promotional outreach, but will support a more targeted project. If you would like to discuss projects ideas, please let me know and we can set up a time to talk. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 20:09, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
- Khalid, I'm planning to arrange a 2-days Wikipedia event early next year (in Islamabad or Karachi). The event will be host by UNESCO Pakistan. I can sure give you some space at the event for promotion of Punjabi WP. Let me know whether you will be interested. --Saqib (talk) 20:21, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Discussing your outreach work in education
[edit]Dear Professor Khalid Mahmood, I am so happy to hear about your outreach efforts in Pakistan. You are my team's first point of contact in the country, and I would love to discuss your plans and see and see where I can be of help. Outreach wiki is the home of the education program and so I've created a page for Pakistan at Outreach:Education/Countries/Pakistan. Please fee free to introduce yourself and share your work there. Program leaders from around the world come there to connect and to exchange ideas. Plese feel free to reach out to me on my talk page or you may email me at: akovalwikimedia.org. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 03:49, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Status update
[edit]Hi Khalid Mahmood. Thanks once again for starting to draft your proposal last year.
I just wanted to give you a heads up that I'm going to mark your proposal as 'withdrawn' because we've launched a new open call for IEG proposals for 2015 and I want to make sure that community reviewers don't mistake this idea as a current submission.
Of course, you are welcome to submit a new proposal either in IEG or, as Alex indicates above, in the Project and Event Grant program.
Warm regards,
