Grants:TPS/Geraki/EEPEK2017
This had been a submission to the Wikimedia Participation Support process, but was withdrawn or otherwise cancelled (not denied).
Proposed participation
[edit]I am highly active Wikipedian since 2003. I am experienced in giving Wikipedia oriented talks and lectures. I cooperate with Magioladitis on education and gender gap issues and we organised a lot of related activities the past years, including and online course on Wikipedia in Education for educators.
Last year we implemented an online course on Wikipedia for educators (http://edu.wikimedia.gr/) presenting why and how to use Wikipedia in the classroom. During the course we helped the educators to understand the basics of Wikipedia Education Program, but we also found enough things about the expectations of these educators, and the challenges they meet. The results of our work were written in a paper titled "Digital Wikipedia School for Educators" - "Ψηφιακό Σχολείο Βικιπαιδείας για Εκπαιδευτικούς").
Our paper was accepted at the 3rd National Conference to Promote Educational Innovation. The conference is organized by the Scientific Association for the Promotion of Educational Innovation (E.E.P.E.K.) in collaboration with the University of Thessaly (Department of Education, Early Childhood Education and Special Education) and the Technological Educational Institution of Thessaly (Economics and Management School).
Goal and expected impact
[edit]We expect to raise awareness of use of Wikipedia in Education. It is an effort to encourage more educators and teachers to use Wikipedia in school projects and explain the benefits of it. This will also help educators guide their students to improve articles. We expect that raising the interest of educators in formal education will create a movement of implementing wikipedia assignments within the existing curriculum of many courses. We also expect to get more feedback about the challenges and expectations of educators on using Wikipedia in the classroom. Most of our findings from our work, the paper, and feedback will be published here as a Learning Pattern. The paper will be published in the minutes of the conference, available for free (so the potential audience is even wider than the actual participants).
At the same conference there will be participation of two educators who organised Corfupedia school project. It's a good opportunity for meeting them in person for the first time.
Budget breakdown
[edit]We have decided that we do not need to be both of us in the conference in order to cut travelling expenses and avoid personal burnout. Unfortunately, the conference organisers ask for registration from all authors of a paper, so we cannot avoid the registration fee for Magioladitis.
I will probably drive to Larissa instead of travelling by train. According to a previous trip and the current prices, it will cost a little less than 50 € including car fuel and road toll fees.
- Transportation: 50 €
- Per diem: 1 x 30 €
- Registration fee: 2 x 30 = 60 €
- Bank commission for incoming transfer: 4 €
Other instructions
[edit]- I will carry with me handouts that we have already printed, and some more dedicated to educators.
