    • Indication of FTE and duration of work: 1.0 FTE, with a renewable contract for 12 months.

Strategic plan

[edit]
  • May be required. Link to your strategic plan, if you have one. This is not required for new applicants or affiliates developing their strategic plan.

Introduction

[edit]
  • Required. Introduce your organization, give some context about it, highlight your strategic plan and some activities to give an overview.

We were established in 2014, and approved as a user group in 2015. Finally, we were approved as a Wikimedia chapter in 2019. We are the only movement affiliate in South Korea. South Korea is not a multilingual society, so we are focusing on supporting Korean Wikimedia community.

Last year, Korean Wikimedia Community started activities to innovate Korean Wikipedia, which included the replacement of Korean Wikipedia's old main page. The activities were so successful that the project's user edits and active users reached an all-time high.

Programs

[edit]
  • Required. Each program should contain only the following information:
    • Name of program
    • Brief description of overall program (about 100-500 words)
      • A comprehensive list of activities for a program is optional, and no extensive description of these activities is required.
    • Description of SMART objectives or goals for that program
    • Target metrics at the overall program level (not the activity level)
    • Brief explanation of why this program is important in relation to your organizational strategy or movement strategy (2-3 sentences).

Community support

This program aims to support users' activity on Wikimedia projects and share Wikimedia-related issues with the community. Since last year, we have been supporting activities to innovate Korean Wikipedia to provide user-friendly environment and revive the community.

Program Objectives
  • Share Wikimedia-related issues with Korean Wikimedia users by granting travel scholarships to two users
  • Intensively and collectively improve specific article by supporting 5 offline meetups and 2 online editathons
  • Praise and encourage dedicated users by awarding money prizes to 4 users.

Why are we doing this?

Although Wikimedia Foundation provides rapid grants and travel scholarships, Korean Wikimedia users cannot easily apply for the foundation's programs, because most of Korean are monolingual. In this situation, we need to provide faster and easier supportive programs for the Korean users. South Korea is regionally and linguistically isolated from other international communities, we also need to share international Wikimedia-related issues with Korean users.

As we mentioned in our annual plan, Korean Wikipedia was seriously threatened by a new competitor. The users agreed that we needed to innovate the project and revive the community. Our activities for the innovation was so successful that we will continue and extend this activity.

Planned activities

  • travel scholarships for Wikimania attendees
  • awards for dedicated users
  • supporting offline or online meetup for the innovation
  • supporting offline meetups and online editathon
Program metrics and targets
  • Number of participants to offline events: 30
  • Number of participants to online events: 30
  • Number of content pages improved or created: 400

Partnership

We planned this program to improve professional or academic articles, and support teachers and students who use Wikimedia projects as an educational tool. To motivate them, we will provide official volunteer hours for students who edit articles we specify next year.

Program Objectives
  • Improve professional or academic articles by building partnership with at least two groups with professional knowledge
  • Promote Wikimedia projects to teachers by hosting at least one webinar
  • Motivate middle/high school students to edit Wikipedia articles by running five monthly volunteer programs
  • Reach out to students from a low-income family by creating partnership with at least one government-run organization.

Why are we doing this?

Korean Wikimedia community is so small that it lacks a lot of professional or academic articles. Korean Wikipedia's competitor is fast growing and it provides enormous professional knowledge without references. As a solution to this problem, solution we will create a partnership with volunteer groups with professional knowledge, and provide official volunteer hours for them through a governement-run platform.

We are also planing to provide the volunteer hours for middle/high school students who participate in our editing program. During the trial activity, we realized that we cannot easily advertise our program to students who don't have their own mobile device or desktop computer. To reach out to these students, we will cooperate with government-run organizations which support students from a low-income family.

Planned activities

  • partnerships with volunteer groups with professional or academic knowledge
  • supporting teacher and student who use Wikimedia projects as an educational tool
  • cooperation with government organizations for students from a low-income family
Program metrics and targets
  • Number of participants to webinars: 10
  • Number of participants to volunteer editing programs: 70
  • Number of content pages improved or created: 1000
  • Number of partnerships made with government organizations: 2

Sister Projects

We invented this program to support much less active Wikimedia sister projects than Korean Wikipedia. We will collect pictures of region which is less presented on Wikimedia projects and host online edit-a-thons to encourage users to edit sister projects' articles.

Program Objectives
  • Intensively improve articles related to regions less represented on Wikimedia projects and collect images of the regions by hosting two 2-day offline gatherings for skilled users
  • Encourage users to contribute to Korean sister projects by holding three online editathons

Why are we doing this?

Korean Wikimedia community is relatively small, and most of the users just contribute to Korean Wikipedia. Other Korean sister projects are maintained by the small number of users. Korean community continuously require us to support the projects. Although We planned some offline events, we failed to motivate the user to contribute to the projects. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we hosted alternative online edit-a-thons for the sister projects, which we didn't plan last year. They were surprisingly successful, so we will extend this activity this year.

Planned activities

  • WikiTambang
  • Online edit-a-thons for sister projects
Program metrics and targets
  • Number of participants to events: 50
  • Number of content pages improved or created: 120
  • Number of Wikidata items improved or created: 500
  • Number of pictures and videos of places uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: 300

Communtinity Support

Originally, we planned to resume our offline activities, becuase we expected that Korean Government would lift the lockdown. Unfortuately, we had to cancel or postpone our offline activities due to the spread of Covid-19, last year. We mainly hosted or financially supported online edit-a-thons. Meanwhile, we launched new program titled "Media literacy education for new users." It aimed at educating new users on media literacy, using Wikipedia. Last year, we had difficulties to bulid a partnerships with schools and non-profit organizations, because the schools were closed and the organizations couldn't hold offline events. On the other hand, our online volunteering program was very successful. We gathered 37 volunteers from medical shools. They created or improve 78 articles which were related to HIV/AIDS. We gave them hour of communtiy hours. We think that that ecouraged them to edit aricles diligently.

We oringlly planned to gather all of the Wikitambang participants in one place and edit ariticles together, but we had to change the WikiTambang plan due to the spread of Covid-19. The changed plan drew more new users and two of six participants were new users. They enthusiastically edited aricles and uploaed images on Wikimedia projects.
