Wikimedia Korea/Annual Plan/2021

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This article is a draft not approved by the general meeting

Background

[edit]

Wikimedia Korea is based on South Korea. Because the country's official language is only Korean, we mainly support Korean Wikimedia projects. Last year, Korean Wikimedia Community started activities to innovate Korean Wikipedia, which included the replacement of Korean Wikipedia's old main page. The activities were so successful that the project's user edits and active users reached an all-time high.

Unfortunately, we must have stopped all of our offline activities due to Covid-19 pandemic last March. Because we predict that the lockdown will be lifted, we will focus on offline activities for the innovation of Korean Wikipedia, which we originally planned this year.

Now, Korean Wikipedia is facing threat of a commercial wiki service. The service allow users to write articles without references and add their own opinions. With the policy, users can create articles more easily and quickly than Korean Wikipedia, and search engines place the service's articles on the top position. In this situation, we had to consider a way to draw new users and collect more professional or academic knowledge to keep our mission. We also had to think about how to provide more convenient tools to contribute to articles.

Priorities

[edit]
  • To support activities for the Korean Wikipedia's innovation suggested by the community.
  • To research and survey needs of new users who came after the innovation
  • To encourage users to improve academic and professional articles which have been less edited
  • To reach out to students who have difficulty assessing to the Internet and online knowledge.

Programs

  • WikiConference
  • Wikimanina scholarship
  • Awards for dedicated Users
  • Regular meetups for innovation
  • Supporting offline meetups
  • Supporting online editathons (new)
  • Supporting development of gadgets and improvement of the user interface (new)

Compared to last year, we canceled support for mentors for new comers activity. Originally, we planned to organize a group of mentors and hosted consecutive offline and online events. However, we couldn't host the offline events due to Covid-19 pandemic, and Korean Wikipedia's mentor system developed by the foundation was naturally activated. We don't need to organize other mentor group any more.

We established two new activities: supporting online editathons and supporting development of gadgets and improvement of the user interface. During the pandemic, users required us to financially support online editathons hosted by volunteers. After the innovation, we realized that Korean Wikipedia has old and inconvenient system. Users pointed out that it causes mobile users to give up their contribution to Wikipedia, and its old communication interface interrupts efficient discussion among users in this year's annual conference.

activities explanation objectives
WikiConference A national conferecce for both experienced users and newcomers hosted in Seoul
  • delivering new knowledge related to Wikimedia project
  • sharing and discussing users' experience related to the project.
Wikimanina scholarship A travel scholarship granted to a Korean Wikimedia user who attends Wikimania

Awards for dedicated Users Money prizes awarded to dedicated users recommended by Korean Wikimedia community.
  • complimenting dedicated users and motivating volunteers

  • encouraging users to specific articles intensively
  • activating specific projects
Supporting development of gadgets and improvement of the user interface Financial support for technical activities to develop new gadgets and improve old interface. Korean Wikipedia is a very small community and we don't have volunteer developer for this activity. We can order the development suggested by users.
  • providing convenient tools to lessen user's labor
  • motivating mobile users to contribute to articles
  • improving old communication system to discuss more efficiently

Partnership

[edit]
2020 2021
  • Libraries
  • Schools
  • Non-government Organizations
  • Volunteer groups (new)
  • Schools
  • Government organizations for students from a low-income family (new)

This year, we changed targets of this program, because last year's partnerships didn't make an impact we expected. To improve professional and academic articles less edited by the community, we will build a partnership with volunteer groups which are consisted of student or researchers with professional knowledge. To motivate them, we will provide official volunteer hours for them through a government-run online platform.

We have supported schools by supporting offline meetups or delivering offline lectures. We will continue these sub-activities, but we will add following plans to this activity to make this activity successful:

  • Hosting webinars for teachers
  • Providing certifications for dedicated students recommended by teachers
  • Providing volunteer hours to student who participated in our editing program
  • Developing educational sources

This year, we realized that we cannot easily advertise our program to students who don't have their own mobile device or desktop computer. To reach out to these students, we will cooperate with government-run organizations which support students from a low-income family. We will introduce our volunteer programs to the students through the organizations, and provide opportunities to access online knowledge and to share their own knowledge online.

  • Wikiquote & clubs
  • WikiTambang
  • Online edit-a-thons (new)

We will resume WikiTambang activity next year, because we evaluated the last year's results achieved the goals. We will focus on online events more than offline events to support sister projects, because online edtiathons we hosted on some sister projects during the pandemic were more successful than we expected, given the participants and items/articles submitted.

activities explanation objectives
WikiTambang In this activity, skilled users gather in an area or region which is less represented on Korean Wikimedia projects. The participants collect sources and take pictures intensively for one or two days, and they improve or create articles related to the region. tambang means to explore in Korean.
  • intensively improving articles related less represented regions
  • taking photos of the regions
Online edit-a-thons for sister projects We offilcially hosted two offline edit-a-thons on Wikidata and Korean Wikiquote. We will hold online edit-a-thons on other sister projects including Wikinews.
  • encouraging users to contribute to sister projects
