Programs
[edit]Educational Program
Within the objectives defined for the 2017-02 period is to further deepen the activities developed by the chapter in the Education Program, especially in regard to activities previously tested such as "Wikipedia in the University" and "Wikipuentes". This program will address three lines of work:
- Wikipedia in the University: After the successful experiences carried out by Wikimedia Chile between 2014 and 2017 along with different institutions of higher education, it is expected to carry on new activities, both with institutions which we have already worked and incorporating new ones. For 2017-02, the following objectives are expected:
- Goals
- Implementation of three Wikipedia in the University programs.
- At least two of these programs should be new courses.
- 70 students involved in the activities and created as new users.
- 40 new and/or improved articles at the end of the evaluation period.
- Wikipuentes: To address primary and secondary education, Wikimedia Chile will launch a local version of the successful Wikipuentes program, created by Wikimedia Argentina. This MOOC is intended for primary and secondary education teachers, with a duration of 5 weeks. Since educational activities end in November-December each year, the idea is to use 2017-02 as a time to prepare the platform for its launching in April 2018, when the activity can have a mayor impact.
- Goals
- Installation of the site www.wikimedia.cl/wikipuentes and adaptation of its contents to the local context.
- Conduct a trial period with at least 5 teachers and/or people linked to education.
- 2018 outreach materials: As in the case of Wikipuentes, it is expected to use 2017-02 to prepare the materials to be used in educational activities during 2018. Among these it is expected to produce short videos that will explain the main characteristics of Wikipedia for both online and in-person activities, as well as brochures and other printed materials. This will allow us both to support activities such as Wikipedia in the university and to generate a greater impact in the long term.
- Goals
- Production of four short videos.
- Brochures design & printing of for educational purposes.
Outreach activities
Wikimedia Chile will continue its outreach activities, mainly edit-a-thons and workshops in conjunction with local GLAM institutions.
- Edit-a-thons and workshops: Two activities during the year are expected, for which we already have conversations with the National Museum of Fine Arts and the University of Chile.
- Goals
- Organize 3 outreach mass activities.
- 100 participants.
- 30 new users.
- 35 new and/or improved articles.
- 2018 Outreach materials: Like the Education case, it is expected to prepare printed and audiovisual material to spread the Wikimedia projects in different activities during 2018. It is expected that this merchandising items -such as brochures, pencils, stickers, etc.- can foster our projects awareness and thus encourage participation. In addition, it is expected to develop some viral videos that can be used through the chapter's social media.
- Goals
- Production of four short videos.
- Brochures and merchandising design & printing.
Iberocoop-WikiArabia contest
It is expected to develop a wikicontest jointly between some affiliates/groups part of the Iberocoop and WikiArabia initiatives, with the objective of expanding Latin America contents in the Arabic-speaking projects and Middle East and North Africa contents in the Spanish-speaking projects (and potentially Portuguese and Italian), especially related to cultural and artistic themes. Wikimedia Chile would be one of the coordinating chapters, managing the promotion, jury selection and awards delivery, among others.
The contest would be held between October and November.
- Goals
- At least 5 Latin American countries and 5 Arab countries participating.
- 100 people participating, with at least 40 from Latin America and 40 from the Arab World.
- 300 new articles created, with at least 120 in Latin America and 120 in the Arab World.
Wiki Science Competition
It is expected to organize the national version of Wiki Science Competition (WSC), an international photo contest organized by the University of Tartu and Wikimedia Eesti. The objective of WSC is to encourage scientific development at local level through photography. Being a completely new activity, Wikimedia Chile will participate in a pilot mode, trying to get the support of local scientific institutions (such as universities, research centers, National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research, etc).
- Goals
- Launch Wiki Science Chile contest in the October-November term.
- Obtain the support of at least two local scientific development institutions.
- Have at least 50 valid photos for the contest.
Sports and other events coverage
It is expected to cover several sporting and other cultural/social events, with the aim of obtaining high quality images and better illustrate Chile-related articles with photographs published under a free license.
- Goals
- At least 200 pictures uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
- At least 10% of the photographs should be highlighted as quality images.

Educational Program
Education projects have traditionally been one of Wikimedia Chile’s focuses, where we have had relative success in recent years. Considering this, the chapter planned a significant number of activities in this program for 2017-02, based on the activities carried out during the first part of the year. However, various administrative situations (Board dedication to the publication of the grant, release of pending reports and the approval of this grant) made it impossible to contact educational institutions before September. At that moment of the semester, it was impossible to convince new or old institutions to organize new activities in the last three months of the academic year, so the activities expected for this semester were not possible to achieve. Despite these problems, we have been able to talk with some academics to start planning the activities for 2018 and we were able to organize at least one activity with the Library Sciences course in the Metropolitan Technological University (UTEM). This workshop was organized on November 21, and it had 25 students participating.
Regarding the other activities planned within the Education Program, we have made progress adapting Wikipuentes, originally created by Wikimedia Argentina. The original MOOC was completely reviewed by a teacher and then adjusted, mainly localizing some texts, so it can be easily used by Chilean teachers. During the next weeks, we will work on the website design and its release so, during February, we will work on the pilots to be done by some school teachers.
Regarding the design of outreach materials, work has been done on the definitions of the products, which should be carried out during the months of January and February.

Outreach activities
After several months of planning, Wikimedia Chile and the National Museum of Fine Arts organized the Editatón de Mujeres Artistas dedicated to improving the information about female plastic artists. The event became the main activity of the National Day of the Visual Arts, held annually on September 29, and had the participation of the deputy director of the National Council of Culture and the Arts and several other authorities, getting important mentions in the national media (Radio Biobío, EMOL).
The activity, which included two workshops and several artistic interventions, was joined by more than 60 participants (mostly women) in what became the largest editathon in the country. Of them, more than 40 participants edited a total of 36 new articles on visual artists. The result was considered positive by the Museum, the main artistic institution of the country, and they have requested a new activity during December to improve and expand the articles created in the first editathon and explore new opportunities with Wikimedia Chile.
Just like in the case of Education materials, the production of videos and other products will be done in January and February, once the main activities of the grant are finished.

Iberocoop-WikiArabia contest
With the objective of increase the coverage of cultural content in the regions of Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the affiliates associated with the Iberocoop initiative and the WikiArabia conference, partnered to develop an editing contest between the communities of Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish Wikipedias. Wikimedia Chile, as one of the original promoters of the idea, participated as the administrative manager of this contest, although it was developed collaboratively.
Bridges across Cultures was held between October 15 to November 15, 2017. Although the contestants could edit any article related to the five available categories (Literature, Music, Visual Artes, Cuisine & Traditions and Monuments), the organizers released a list of 644 articles relevant for 6 Latin American countries and 9 MENA countries. 206 Wikimedians signed as participants, although 64 were able to gain some points according to the evaluating system.
802 new articles were created with more than 5 kB, while other 30 stubs were improved in a similar way. Some of the best articles created included the Persian version of Music of Colombia and the Spanish article about Carthaginese Statue of Ganymede). Regarding the articles created about Chilean culture, the most relevant include the Arabic and Turkish articles about the Viña del Mar Song Festival (the most important artistic event of the country), the articles in Arabic about poet Nicanor Parra and folklorist Margot Loyola, and the article in Persian about empanada, one of the most traditional pastries in Chilean and Latin American cuisine.
The contest wasn’t only a success according to the achieved goals (the number of created and improved articles was almost three times larger than the expected goal). We believe it can become a model to increase South-South cooperation within our movement as a way to improve the knowledge equity, in line with the new Wikimedia Strategic Direction.

Wiki Science competition
Between November 1 and December 3, 2017, Wikimedia Chile organized the first local version of the Wiki Science competition. The contest about scientific photography had a total of 71 participating images (142% compared to the original goal), including microscopic images related to geology, scientific instruments, and native fauna, to name a few. The winners will be announced in a few weeks.
Besides the direct output of new images available in Wikimedia Commons, this Wiki Science competititon was an interesting opportunity for Wikimedia Chile to reach the local scientific community. We were able to contact some academic institutions and they promoted the contest within their communities, so this could be a first step to start working with those institution. The contest was also an opportunity to reignite the relationship with the Photographic Academy of Chile so we can organize more activities together.

Sports and other events coverage
Continuing this project launched in 2015, members of Wikimedia Chile have been able to attend some local activities and take better pictures using the equipment acquired by our chapter in the past years. In the time covered by this midpoint report, a total of 187 files have been uploaded. The activities covered included a religious ceremony, where it was possible to take a good image of Cardinal Ezzati (most important Catholic authority in Chile) and an artistic intervention in Santiago. The most important activity until now was the opening of Teletón 2017 (a charity event turned into one of the most popular TV shows of the country), where one of our members was able to contact the organizers and got a press accreditation.
In the past weeks, Wikimedia Chile improved this equipment with the acquisition of a new lens and a monopod. This reflected in the better quality of the images uploaded, especially in the case of the Teletón images, which used the new equipment entirely. Currently, 9 images have been elected as “quality images” in Wikimedia Commons.
For the following weeks, we will try to participate in some of the very popular summer festivals (such as Santiago a Mil, Viña del Mar Song Festival or Olmué Huaso Festival) so we can increase the number of images uploaded as part of this project.

The public release of Wikipuentes Chile will be made in mid April, 2018.
Regarding the design of outreach materials, a 8-page brochure was made to support local activities (and is one of the first documents focused on Visual Editor instead of the traditional wikicode). 4 tutorial videos ("How to edit", "How to use templates", "How to add sources", "How to upload a file") are being in the last stages of production and will be published before April 15th, 2018.

Wikimedia Chile also took part on the Primavera Hacker conference (December 3rd, 2017) with a presentation regarding the gender challenges on Wikipedia. Finally, a small workshop was done with members of the Chilean Association of Psychoanalists (APCH) on January 6th, 2018.
To support the future work of the chapter, several materials to promote Wikimedia Chile and our projects were done. Stickers and institutional pens were made. A campaign was planned to be released in April-May 2018, explaining Wikipedia to general audiences: «Wikipedia es de todos: Colabora, Comparte, Cuídala» («Wikipedia belongs to all: Collaborate, Share it, Preserve it»). Four videos were created explaining each concept and 1,000 flyers were printed to use it in any of our future activities.

In the time covered by this grant, a total of 266 files were uploaded.
The activities covered included a religious ceremony, where it was possible to take a good image of Cardinal Ezzati (the most important Catholic authority in Chile) and an artistic intervention in Santiago. In November, pictures were taken at the opening of Teletón 2017 (a charity event turned into one of the most popular TV shows of the country), where one of our members got a press accreditation. During summer 2018, we were able to participate in two important musical events: the Chilean Rock Summit and the Olmué Huaso Festival (in the Valparaíso Region).
In 2017, Wikimedia Chile improved its equipment with the acquisition of a new lens and a monopod. This reflected in the better quality of the images uploaded, especially in the case of the Teletón images, which used the new equipment entirely. Currently, 26 images have been selected as “quality images” in Wikimedia Commons, while 1 was selected as a “valued image”.
