Project Goal

[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Increase awareness of Wikimedia projects among new editors who are members of the hub and possibly nonmembers in the locality
  2. Engage new editors to ensure their retainment and commitment
  3. Equip new editors with requisite editing and writing skills for wikipedia as well as those for Wikimedia commons

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We are planning a series of 3 editathons over 1 month focused on improving the presence of contents relating to the region on english and Igbo Wikipedia by creating new pages and improving existing ones as well as uploading files to commons.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will ensure full participation through email invitations, notifications on our private chat rooms, as well as social platforms. Also, we will involve the community in selecting flexible dates for our conversations.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We have the Chairman, Wikimedia User group Nigeria, Mr Olaniyan Shola and one other experienced wikimedian, Sam Oyelele. I will also lead as the project coordinator, considering my wealth of experience in organizing Wikimedia projects.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Most of the participants have smart phones which can be used during the edit-a-thons. I will be providing unlimited fast-speed internet that will be used for all the editathon meetups.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will use our Whatsapp group for the participants to talk and share ideas. We will also set up a support system to encourage new editors.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1i5IfUqKax51HB8yofT9cKBZPa9gpZI2gUwZKg-C9F5o/edit?usp=sharing

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Given that this is a new hub domiciled in the south eastern region of nigeria where wikimedia projects have little or no visibility, this project will kickstart a long journey of committed editors who will serve to ensure adequate representation of contents related to the south east region, particularly their rich culture, history and others alike. This will pull participants from the many higher institutions in the region, especially Imo state.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets: '

  1. Number of participants - 25
  2. Number of new editors - 20
  3. Number of of articles created or improved - 30
  4. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) - 10
  5. Number of photos uploaded on Wikimedia commons - 10
