Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will do a series of two editathons, one in February of 2020 titled, "Writing (Pacific Northwest) African American History into Wikipedia" and one in March 2020 titled, "Writing (Pacific Northwest) Women's History into Wikipedia".

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will post 11x17 print flyers around the university campus; we will advertise on Instagram and Facebook using targeted marketing; we will advertise through university listservs; we will partner with AfroCROWD for both events.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes, we hosted an editathon, in partnership with AfroCROWD, in February of 2019 titled, "Writing African American History into Wikipedia." We published an article about the event in our regional LIS journal, Oregon Library Association Quarterly.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We will be using a computer classroom at the Oregon State University Valley Library that has 24 desktop computers. In addition, participants will be invited to bring their own laptops - the room has many tables without computers where participants can sit. We will provide training and "information piles" about histories that need to be added to Wikipedia.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will keep participant emails for future editathon invitations. We will possibly include participants in follow-up assessment.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

We have several additional goals: 1. Get other libraries in the pacific northwest involved in hosting and cross-promoting editathons on the same topics in the Spring of 2020. 2. Host Winter/Spring editathons annually.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 2
  2. Number of participants: 30 at each event
  3. Number of new editors: 20 at each event
  4. Number of of articles created or improved: 20 at each event
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 10

  • Support Support – Laurie Bridges does some fanstastic Wikimedia and libraries intersectional work. Having heard of her past experiences working with students and librarians, I've no doubt this will be a worthy cause as well —UY Scuti Talk 19:13, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
