Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes, we met our goals and we are happy with the way the event unfolded. We hosted a series of trainings and two edit-a-thons from May 23-24, 2018 as planned. Many of our old editors turned  up and many new ones were recruited.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Please report on your original project targets, use the below table to:

  • List each of your original targets from your project plan.
  • List the actual outcome that was achieved.
  • Explain how your outcome compares with the original target. Did you reach your targets? Why or why not?
Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
2 Events 2 events
Number of participants on day  one=50 69
Number  of participants on day two=50 69
Number of new editors=38 55
Number of articles improved=50 167
Number of articles created 7 The number seven here represent the number that were moved out of the sandboxes. Many of the articles created by the participants are still in their sandboxes. This is because majority of the participants have not qualified to move articles.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  • What did not work so well?
  • What would you do differently next time?

a.       Apart from the problem we had with moving newly created articles out of our sandboxes, every other thing worked well. There was a good turn out of participants. 14 out of the 69 participants were people that participated in our 2017 edit-a-thon. The participants were excited to be part of the program. There was constant electric power supply, internet connectivity, lunch and baby sitting provisions. Participants were happy. Thanks to the Wikimedia foundation for funding our event.

b.      Many of the participants were newly recruited editors without the capacity to move articles out of their sandboxes. As such, participants were stucked with their first created articles on their sandboxes. There was no highly experienced Wikipedian in our midst. At a time we had to call Mohammed Sadat (User: Masssly) in Ghana on Skype to help us on creating new sandboxes. But before then, we had wasted so much time trying to do it ourselves and waiting for the responses to requests we placed on our sandboxes asking more experienced Wikipedians to help us move our articles.

c.       Next time, we would like to have a more experience Wikipedian in our midst. We would also encourage newly recruited editors to edit as many articles as possible before the event date. This is to ensure that everybody acquires the capacity to move articles before the date of the event. We were unable to move participants from Ituku Ozalla and Aba campuses of the University as a result of the distance between the campuses. Traveling from Aba to Nsukka is about 10 hrs to and fro.; from Ituku Ozalla to Nsukka is about five hours to and fro. So it is not possible for people to be transported from the two campuses daily without jeopardizing the effective time management for the program. Moreover, people turned out from Nsukka Campus more than we expected.
