Grants:Project/Rapid/Ambrosia10/NDF2021 Conference
Project Goal
[edit]Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
- To facilitate connections between the New Zealand GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) community and the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand. The National Digital Conference is the annual GLAM digital conference of New Zealand. It is a time when the employees of GLAM institutions come together to discuss how to enhance digital interaction with culture and heritage in New Zealand.
- By attending this conference I aim to continue to develop ongoing relationships with a variety of New Zealand cultural institutions such as the National Library of New Zealand, the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, DigitalNZ and Auckland Museum as well as with smaller institutions whose employees prioritise attendance at this conference. I'm also hoping to establish new connections to facilitate collaboration between these institutions and the Aotearoa New Zealand user group.
- I hope to raise awareness of the growing editing community within New Zealand with GLAMs and to continue to act as a person of contact for interested GLAMs.
Project Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- I will be spending my time attending presentations at the conference and actively engaging with presenters during the question and answer sessions after their presentations. I find this is a good time to advocate for open access, the use of appropriate rights statements and to encourage reuse of GLAM collections and data in various Wikiprojects. The break sessions, as well as the CONNECT evening event which is intended to be open to the wider GLAM community and not just conference attendees, will be fertile times for informal but important conversations to take place, facilitating collaborations between GLAMs and the local New Zealand editing community. I am hoping to raise the profile of the Aotearoa New Zealand User Group and assist in facilitating more collaborations or at least raise awareness in the GLAM sector of our community. I also hope to recruit new or lapsed editors from the GLAM employees attending this conference. Now that more regional meetings are being established around New Zealand I believe there is an opportunity to encourage knowledge professionals to become more active in contributing to the Wikimedia movement themselves.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- I will be reporting on this application to the Aotearoa New Zealand Online Meetup on the 16th of September. See this link. Once this application is published I'm also intending to publicise it on the New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- I intend to write a report back on the conference to both the Wellington Wikimedia Meetup group as well as at the Aotearoa New Zealand Online Meetup. It will be at this time that I intend to pass on to the appropriate editors or local meetings any engagement opportunities that New Zealand editors might be able to assist with. At this time I also hope to ensure that any conference attendees expressing an interest in editing Wikiprojects can be put in touch with a more experienced editor or an invitation sent out to attend a local Wiki meetup. It will also be an opportunity to update the editing community on any new GLAM initiatives raised during the conference that may be of interest. I will be happy to add a link to this report in the final report back to the Community Resources Team as part of this funding application.
Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
Impact
[edit]How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:
- 5 - 10 meaningful engagements/conversations with GLAM organisations or representatives of the same concerning the potential or current Wiki related collaborations between GLAM organisations and Aotearoa New Zealand editors
- Undertake to tweet actively about the conference presentations attended to assist Wiki editors, particularly international editors who will be unable to physically attend, to participate via social media in the wider discussions concerning NDF21.
- The impact of attendance at this conference is unlikely to be measurable by the normal standards of wikipedia pages created, images uploaded or new editors trained to contribute. However I believe the relationships created and maintained via attendance at this conference are vital to the ongoing collaboration efforts with the GLAM community. Attendance at this conference will also assist with my ongoing effort to encourage GLAMs to support the open reuse of their cultural heritage content by anyone including by Wikimedians. I'm hoping to record the details of between 5 - 10 conversations or interactions between myself and conference attendees with the aim of both reporting on these to the Aotearoa New Zealand user group as well as to ensure that I am able to pass contact details along to appropriate editors for further potential engagement if needed.

- Support Siobhan is a stalwart of the Wikimedia movement in New Zealand, and has presented at previous National Digital Forums from the point of view of the Wikimedian and end-user of institutional collections. From talking with members of the GLAM community in NZ over the years, I know that her advocacy for open knowledge, volunteer crowdsourcing, and open licensing of institutional photo collections has been noticed and is having an effect on institutional policies. She's also a tireless Wikimedia advocate who supports numerous events and projects in NZ, and is an excellent representative of the Movement in the media. But she's also a volunteer, and receives no funding from the WMF or any institution for all her work. Most NDF attendees work in the GLAM sector and are supported by their institutional employers, but few private individuals can afford to attend. I think it would be in the WMF's interest for Siobhan to be funded to go this year. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 01:55, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- The GLAM community in New Zealand is only beginning to understand the opportunities offered by engaging in the Wiki movement. Knowledge and understanding of what we do and how we work is very patchy in GLAMs, and having Ambrosia at this national GLAM meeting will help to raise our profile in this important group. Ambrosia is a very effective communicator and will both represent the Wiki community well, and feed back to the user group what she learns. DrThneed (talk) 01:49, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support Ambrosia10 will be a useful addition to the NDF conference attendance list. As a representative of users of digital GLAM outputs she brings a viewpoint that GLAM employees need to pay attention to. This conference is very focused on building capacity and sharing knowledge within the GLAM sector of New Zealand. Having representatives of users of the digital outputs that are discussed and demoed at this conference is very influential. GLAM workers want their work to have impact on the public and this is an opportunity for a member of the public attend and advocate for other users - and specifically the users that are the editors of Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikisource. The Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand is going from strength to strength since lockdown in 2020 provided opportunities to link up our small editing meetups into a wider discussion via videoconference. Having representatives attend NDF is a way in which we as a User Group can continue to build influence to add to the Wiki GLAM movement within New Zealand. - Support Siobhan is a well-known member of the Wikimedia community, whose knowledge extends across the different wiki's She has a great overview of the cosy integration between wikidata, commons and Wikipedia and beyond (non-wiki information systems). Her attendance would greatly benefit the tightening and extension of different information systems and as a result grow the movement --Andrawaag (talk) 05:27, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- Support no brainer, if you would increase grant funding, start here. Slowking4 (talk) 00:19, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
