Project Goal
[edit]What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative
- What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
- 24. Movement Charter: To ensure that our communities within our underrepresented region are fully engaged in conversations about the governance of the movement.
Project Background
[edit]- When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
- During the Ambassador Program implementation phase: 25 March 2024 - 22 April 2024
- Where will your project activities be happening?
- Meta-wikimedia
- Lusophone wikimedian community
- Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
- Yes. Part of my work will be an individual work of translation and revision work on meta-wikimedia. But I will collaborate once more with Alebasi24 in co-organizing a virtual call for the Lusophone community members to discuss the Charter's new content. Such a collaboration is connected to a previous grant requested by the Alebasi24. Her part of work is funded by this previous grant.
- The proposed translation/revision intellectual work and community organization activity is connected to my previous participation in the Ambassador Program. In the first consultation of the Lusophone community, which happened in 2022, I worked as an assistant for the ambassador Alebasi24, acting as liaison for the group WikiMulheres+ (See Perspectivas para a Carta do Movimento). In this experience, I helped craft a detailed report on the outcomes of the conducted discussions. In the light of this, I possess an in-depth understanding of the Lusophone discussions on the Movement Charter, which can guide the proposed activities.
- What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
- Not rarely, the Portuguese language is overlooked in the global panorama of the Wikimedia Movement, in both institutional and voluntary environments. On one hand, the Wikimedia Foundation website does not yet include this language, even though it is one of the 7th most spoken languages in the world. On the other hand, there are few volunteers translating pages to Portuguese on meta-wikimedia. Although vital to the movement's governance, many pages related to the Strategy 2030 are poorly or barely translated. That is the case of the domain Movement_Charter/pt-br and its affluent pages.
- As of March 10, 2024, only 52% of all the content under the domain Movement Charter, on meta-wikimedia, is translated to Brazilian Portuguese (PT-BR). The lack of access in one's own native language to a dense and important content such as this surely gate-keeps many Lusophone community members from this conversation.
- I plan to increase and improve the translation of the Movement Charter main page and all affluent pages to PT-BR, not only ensuring that Portuguese-speakers can access this content, but also implementing strategies for language inclusivity.
- OBS.: As Portuguese is a gendered language, inclusivity is an important theme, especially when in comes to gender equality. For Language inclusivity best practices, see the manuals curated by the Brazilian Government and the one developed by a prominent University of Portugal.
- To continue the good practice of MC Ambassadors within the Lusophone communities, I plan to assist a strategic discussion (online call), in collaboration with Alebasi24.
- Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?
- Translation
- Coordination
Project Activities
[edit]- What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
-
- Translations: Increase to 70% the PT-BR translation completion status of the domain Movement Charter, currently at only 52%, as shown in the table below. The translation will be executed alongside implementation of the best practices of Language inclusivity. The residual 30% will be a margin for omitting sub-pages from source languages other than English (e.g. Arabic) and with very specific content (e.g. internal documentation), as well as outdated content. We expect to input a total of 25 hours of work to achieve this milestone.
- Revision: Increase to 50% the translation reviewed status. All the 52% previously translated content will be revised according to the best practices of Portuguese Language inclusivity. For this, we expect an extra 5 hours of work.
- How do you intend to keep communities updated on the progress and outcomes of the project? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals responsible for updating the community
- When the project is finalized, the availability of Portuguese translation for most sub-pages domain Movement Charter will be advertised on the main Lusophone channels of the Wikimedia Movement, such as, pt.wikipedia village pump and other private channels (Telegram, Slack, etc.).
- Who will be responsible for delivering on this project, and what are their roles and responsibilities?
- CalliandraDysantha, translator and reviser with a translation edition count of over 3000 on meta-wikimedia (See Xtools).
- CalliandraDysantha, coordination assistant of a community call, alongside Alebasi24.
Additional information
[edit]- If your activities include community discussions, what is your plan for ensuring that the conversations are productive? Provide a link to a Friendly Space Policy or UCoC that will be implemented to support these discussions.
- To ensure a safe, productive environment for the conversations, we will observe the Friendly Space Policy by Wiki Movimento Brasil and will promote the talk on Lusophone Wikimedian channels, after presenting the MC content translated to Portuguese, and revised to adhere to Inclusive Language.
- If your activities include the use of paid online tools, please describe what tools these are and how you intend to use them.
- N/A
- Do your activities include the translation of materials, and if so, in what languages will the translation be done? Please include details of those responsible for making the translations.
- PT-BR
- CalliandraDysantha, translator and reviser with translation edition count over 3000. (See Xtools).
- Are there any other details you would like to share? Consider providing rationale, research or community discussion outputs, and any other similar information, that will give more context on your proposed project.

Outcomes
[edit]After your activities are complete, we would like to understand the draft implementation plan for your community. You will be required to prepare a document detailing this plan around a movement strategy initiative. This report can be prepared through Meta-wiki using the Share your results button on this page. The report can be prepared in your language, and is not required to be written in English.
In this report, you will be asked to:
- Provide a link to the draft implementation plan document or Wikimedia page
- Describe what activities supported the development of the plan
- Describe how and where you have communicated your plan to relevant communities.
- Report on how your funding was spent
Your draft implementation plan document should address the following questions clearly:
- What movement strategy initiative or goal are you addressing?
- What activities will you be doing to address that initiative?
- What do you expect will happen as a result of your activities? How do those outcomes address the movement strategy initiative?
- How will you measure or evaluate your activities? What tools or methods will you use to evaluate your activities?
To create a draft implementation plan, we recommend the use of a logic model, which will help you and your team think about goals, activities, outcomes, and other factors in an organized way. Please refer the following resources to develop a logic model:
- Overview of logic models on Meta-wiki
- Example logic models for reference for other movement activities (such as partnerships and edit-a-thons)
- Blank logic model template on Google Drive
Please confirm below that you will be able to prepare a draft implementation plan document by the end of your grant:
- YES
Optionally, you are welcome to include other information you'd like to share around participation and representation in your activities. Please include any additional outcomes you would like to report on below:
- N/A
