Grants:Project/Kaspo/Editathons in central southern Italy
Project idea
[edit]What is the problem you're trying to solve?
[edit]What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a project facing difficulties in Italy because Italy is one of the few countries where the right to panorama is not granted by the local legislation and there are furthermore other restrictions imposed by the legislation related to cultural heritage. For this reason it is necessary to request prior authorisation to upload photographs of the monuments with a licence compatible with Wikimedia Commons. Although we have a huge monumental heritage, the participants in the competition can only take pictures of a small fraction of it.
In Italy we have a gap between the results of Wiki Loves Monuments and the actual coverage of certain topic on Wikipedia. This is mostly related to the fact that local users are increasingly Wikidata and Commons-oriented. One example is this year's WLM winner. In addition to that, we also have a very fragmented presence in the local authorities that we are trying to strengthen. Interaction events, such as activities in the libraries or museums and events for OpenStreetMap and Wiki Loves Monuments, have been rather limited so far.
What is your solution to this problem?
[edit]For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem.
We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing.

We want to realize a series of editathons in 5 different Italian regions. In each of them we will focus on a specific area.
History
[edit]The tuscan group organized a first big event funded by WFI in 2018 in Editathon in Fortezza delle Verrucole the main acting wikimedians in Tuscany met for 4 days. In addition to editing, we consolidated the group and was able to discuss events and future participation. We can say that was the first big tuscan meeting. The same group and participants return in 2019 in a three-day editathon in Montecatini Terme. In 2019 we asked a bigger grant for 5 events. The big editathon we organized in Montecatini Terme with over 30 people. The municipal council help us by offering free meals and accomodations. So we can save money and we can realize an other big editathon (no before planned) in 28-30 March 2020 in Pescia. For the other one-day event nowday we can't do fix the date, we're waiting for news by with municapal councils. Almost participants are from Pisa so we organized an other editathon, after few weeks in Pisa not included in the project. We are organize other 4 editathons in Pistoia district in the next months how we planned. The project are lasting more than we planned (now we are not at mid-point) but we got more goals that we planned.
Other italian wikipedians asked us help to organize similar events in their region. So we're writing this grant project in common.
This project has Luca Landucci as main organizer like previous projects. For every region there is an organizer, actually we will all help each other.
This is what has been done in other regions to give an idea of the experience and the starting point.
Umbria
[edit]In Assisi (Umbria) has signed a memorandum of understanding between Wikimedia Italia and Municipality of Assisi in order to devolop many projects: events in schools, association, liberations of monument for WLM, Open data etc. The promoter is Paolo Ansideri. He created the jury for the region contest WLM in Umbria in 2019.
Marche
[edit]The most significant projects in the Marche are the following. These are initiatives carried out from the beginning of 2016 that involved hundreds of participants, schools, municipalities, associations. Many hours of training have been developed and first of all encyclopedic articles have been produced, but also articles in Wikivoyage and photographs in the contest of Wiki Loves Monuments.
- Wiki_Appennino_Centro_Italia a collective writing project on the topics about collective memory, history and culture of the territory affected by the seismic series of 2016 and 2017.
- MarcheLovesWiki It is proposed to carry out interventions to support reading education through a multilingual and inclusive regional library network service, intended for students, parents, school staff and citizens with particular regard for special educational needs and ethnic, linguistic and cultural minorities, in the age group from 6 to 19 years.

- ArCA_Wiki_Lab_Macerata one of the activities carried out within the ArCA - Art of Communicating Art project, managed by the OZ Cultural Association as leader and by the partners Gruca Onlus, Distilleria Fotografica and Comune di Macerata ..
- "Fermo Loves Wiki" a collective writing project on topics concerning the history and culture of the city of Fermo.
- Senigallia Loves Wiki a collective writing project on topics concerning the history and culture of the city of Senigallia.
- Digital resources and methodologies for teaching in the historical social field promoted by the Network of Area 9 "Vallata del Foglia" Pesaro-Urbino and intends to provide teachers with tools for laboratory teaching with the use of web sources and the production of multimedia texts in a cooperative mode.
Abruzzo
[edit]Since 2017 the Abruzzo Wikimedia Italy Coordination Team is working on establishing partnership in all Abruzzo’s districts (L’Aquila, Teramo, Chieti, Pescara) with Universities (specially with the University of Teramo with the European Documentation Centre), local municipalities, cultural heritage Institutions and owners of ancient, historical or industrial buildings.
The approach chosen is to establish a strong and personal connection with people and institutions, to let them actively participating to Wikimedia projects in order to promote access, knowledge and management of Abruzzo's treasures and to impact on the discoverability of the land fostering tourism too. The final aim of the Abruzzo Wikimedia Team is also to use Wikimedia projects to expose cultural heritage via Linked Open Data to use as “Abruzzo Wiki Grand Tour”.
All actions are established by personal contacts and meetings with a) politicians and administrators key people to approve the freed of monuments and to develop further agreements and projects; b) teachers, professors, researchers, students of universities and last high school years, GLAM professionals, political and cultural people, photographers and travel bloggers (mostly on Instagram and Facebook), citizens, by conferences, seminaires, workshops, photo sessions, to let people becoming aware of the usefulness and importance of using and practicing Wikimedia projects and to add photos on Commons, to edit the related Wikipedia entries, to manage Wikidata and Wikisource too.
These actions have given to Abruzzo Wikimedia Team and to our projects a wide appeal and we have been called to present our work at conferences in Italy, in Croatia, France, in Austria.
The Wikimedia Project with the greater impact is Wiki Loves Abruzzo, started in 2018 with 20 photographers for 414 photos charged, repeated in 2019 with the participation of 22 photographers for 151 uploaded, photographers directly contacted on Instagram and Facebook with the aim to have better photos compared to those of 2018. This specific action was conducted with the Wiki Loves Abruzzo jury in which from 2019 a photographer and a travel blogger well known in Abruzzo have been chosen to participate as jurors and to disseminate the competition in their communities.
The 2019 Wiki Loves Abruzzo has led Abruzzo among the national finalist winners with the 10th place that it is for our land a very good achievement thinking also we are just at the 2nd year of Wiki Loves Monuments’ Abruzzo participation. During the 2019 Wiki Loves Abruzzo photographers and municipalities administrators realised to be part of a projects that can truly impact on tourism and Abruzzo’s cultural heritage development and findability too.
Projects CDE UniTeramo for Abruzzo Wikimedia:
Molise
[edit]Molise is a Region of central east Italy where are two province Isernia and Campobasso. Molise is bordering with Campania (Naples region), Lazio (Rome region), Abruzzo, and Puglia. The Wikimedia movement in Molise is represented by activists that are working with the schools, university and local administrations. Events to promote contributions on Wikipedia such as an editathon and online and personal meeting will surely enforce the relation between the communities and be an occasion to find new members and donators.
Apulia
[edit]Wikimedian activities in Apulia are really few, but we think we can improve the number of persistent editors and the number of created articles per year with an editathons project and a vision for the future with the purpose.
Context
[edit]In 2017 we organized two Wikipedia courses in Bari (capital of Apulia region), all the participants were satisfied and they learnt about the way to edit Wikipedia and other projects, but few edits were made because there weren’t any follow-ups and there wasn’t a pratical session after the course. What about Wiki Loves Monuments and Wikimedia Commons? In 2018 only 50 photos were uploaded during Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Apulia region of Italy. Since 2019, some volunteers have made contacts with local institutions and photoclubs, so that the number of photos uploaded in 2019 became 950 with 65 photographers. In 2020 the region has for the first time a coordinator in Wikimedia Italia. In 2018 only 50 photos were uploaded during Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Apulia region of Italy. Since 2019, some volunteers have made contacts with local institutions and photoclubs, so that the number of photos uploaded in 2019 became 950 with 65 photographers. These results are really encouraging, because this was the first time and we think that organizing an editathon with a contest will improve users and pages from/about Apulia, because they're really few. So, we are planning to teach and prepare new wikimedians with courses followed by editathons. We are going to work together with cultural institutions here in Apulia and in the municipality of Bari, starting from local cultural center La Scuola Open Source (who gives us location) and then other cultural institutions (like libraries) and local government institutions. We want to have a long impact and to make other follow-ups editathons and having new active and persistent editors.
Project goals
[edit]What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
- Growing partnership with GLAM istitutions and municipalities in 5 italian areas.
- Improving sightseeings articles in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Commons and Wikivoyage in 5 italian areas.
- Improving the community atmosphere and friendliness and strengthening the community cohesion in each 5 regions between wikipedians.
- Giving value to Wiki loves monuments in 5 italian regions and increasing partecipants (istitutions, wikipedians, photographers) in the next years.
Project impact
[edit]How will you know if you have met your goals?
[edit]For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents).
Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.
Outputs
[edit]Goal 1
[edit]For the results on Wikimedia projects we refer to our editathon in Verrucole in 2018 and editathon in Montecatini Terme in 2019. In the first we was 11 people and we made 7 new articles in Wikipedias (different language versions), 3 articles improved and 1 article in Wikivoyage, in the second we was 30 people an we mede 28 new articles Wikipedias (different language versions), 3 articles improved and 1 article in Wikivoyage.
Using this benchmark we calcolate with xxx editathon and xxx participants:
XX new articles in Wikipedias, improve xx articles in Wikipedias, xx new articles in Wikivoyages. Enhancement and creation of articles will involve adding neutral, accurate details about contextual significance and key works; ensuring that articles are included and easily locatable under appropriate lists/categories; and including citations to authoritative recent sources. We will bring high-quality, cutting-edge research to bear on Wikipedia articles by recruiting the help of approximately 10 experts in these topics. These specialists will be trained to ensure that all articles they touch meet the highest standards of reliability and verifiability, so that Wikipedia users can benefit from their expertise – particularly in locating the best up-to-date open access sources for articles.
Goal 2
[edit]We want to develop the network of contacts we have in 5 areas where will do the editathon. This is important to realese new liberations in order to join the Wiki love monuments and to create new events in future.
Goal 3
[edit]This year to measure the satisfaction of partecipants we're going to do a survey for editathon partecipants.
Outcomes
[edit]Goal 1
[edit]Once our project is over, we hope that at least 2 of the experts who were new to Wikipedia will continue to remain active contributors, editing and updating sites (especially should new or better sources become available). In general, we will increase awareness about the importance of Wikimedia participation throughout our networks. Even those who do not participate themselves will find out more about the structures that make Wikipedia articles so reliable, and about the importance of contributing to greater knowledge equity. Like the Fortezza dell Verrucole article we hope the pageviews grow about monuments in Pistoia district and, but we haven't tools to measure, the artistic tourism in zone.
Goal 2
[edit]We want to organize events (editathons, conferences, lessons) in the next years in our old and new GLAM partners.
Goal 3
[edit]We hope the participating this project excite old wikipedians to edit more in next months and new wikipedians start to write new articles.
Do you have any goals around participation or content?
[edit]Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.
- Total participants: 160 people
- New users: at least 86 new registered users each event
- Experts about topic: at least 41 for all events.
Region | Participants | New Articles | Articles improved | New users | Experts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Toscana | 40 | 70 | 30 | 10 | 5 |
Umbria | 30 | 10 | 20 | 20 | 20 |
Abruzzo | 40 | 20 | 30 | 10 | 7 |
Molise | 10 | 10 | 20 | 1 | 1 |
Puglia | 10 | 10 | 20 | 10 | 3 |
Marche | 40 | 40 | 40 | 35 | 5 |
Total | 160 | 160 | 160 | 86 | 41 |
Project plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
We have 5 sub-project, one for each region involved. Each region has an organizer, in section below are specified.
Tuscany
[edit]We want to organize 5 editathons offline in Val d'Orcia about monuments, sightseeings, museums, local history in zone. The biggest event will be the first. This will be a week end in May or June and we wait at least 20 participants, half out of Tuscany and half from Tuscany.
The other 4 will be on Sundays and we wait just people from Tuscany. In each these events there will be a tour for everybody to visit monuments participating in WLM. This is an occasion to involve photographers and other people who are not wikipedians. At the end of tour we present them the Wikimedia projects.
In each editathon we invite at least 5 experts about topics we're going to edit. The experts will help wikipedians to write the articles and will find the correct references. The experts are included in 20 participants in each event. The experts are provides us by municipals councils and local associations.
We choosed the Val d'Orcia because, like in the past in San Romano Garfagna and in Pistoia district, we found municipal councils very collaborative. They offer us the free accomodations for 40 people in order to join the editathon in San Quirico Val d'Orcia. Val d'Orcia is union of municipalities. The main event will be in San Quirico d'Orcia in 2021 spring, the other 5 editathons in each municicapalities (Abbadia San Salvatore, Castiglione d'Orcia, Piancastagnaio, Radicofani).
After these 5 editathons we organize a presentation at the end of August 2021, before next WLM edition, we'll show the results to a broader public in a public event. We'll invite the GLAMs previously involved but also new GLAM istitutions and municipalities in Tuscany to explain the advantages of Wikimedia projects and WLM contest. Wikipedians and local press will also be invited. Every event will be in different place in Pistoia district, in order to involve new wikipedians with more focused targets.
We offert lunch and travel reimbursement to partecipants editing in Wikipedia projects.
At the beginning a brief Wikipedia presentation will be suggested. Later we edit, expert wikipedians will act as tutors for newcomers, especially for expert in topics that we recruited. In the afternoon a tourist guide will present the local sightseeings. In these tours we also aim to involve photographers for WLM.
Usually such free tours, called wikigite, are scheduled mostly in September with just few days in advanced decided. With a calendar with months in advance we can improve the participation and move them also to the early months of summer.
The tours in the afternoon are better than in the morning because on Sunday's afternoon people have more free time.
wikigite have usually targeted photographers since they are related to the WLM photo competition. We think that professional and semiphotographers who want to win the contest go to take the pictures alone and they don't need a guide tour. Therefore, such wikigite have to aim at a wider generic target in order to present not just the WLM contest but also all the wikimedia projects.
Umbria
[edit]In July 2019 Wikimedia Italia signed an memorandum of understanding with the municipality of Assisi to develop various projects involving Wikipedia, sister projects, Wiki loves monuments and courses in schools. The initiative was promoted by Paolo Ansideri of the OICOS Riflessioni association. In order to concrete the memorandum OICOS Riflessioni wants to create an editathon about the architectures of Assisi with expert architects from the zone and from outside. The costs of accomodation will be provided by the municipality of Assisi. While the Wikipedians will provide training support and help them write the articles. The event will be in 2021 spring for a week in Assisi.
Abruzzo
[edit]The main issue we are facing in our projects, established along these two years, is to dedicate special sessions to prepare and train those interested to promote monuments and places related to Wiki Loves Abruzzo competition and to the Abruzzo Wiki Grand Tour project.
There is the need to create a stable community of practices, of interested people, well trained, able to promote further projects devoted to Abruzzo and its treasures, thanks to the whole training process.
Until we will not have people with good Information Literacy competences, Public domain and Copyright knowledge, Wiki digital writing skills, a connection with the Wikimedia community in Italy and in foreign countries, our projects will remain as separated and not connected projects, as sylos.
In particular we intend:
- to work jointly with people from GLAM, high school, universities, touristic and municipality sectors, considered as stakeholders and agents at the same time (e.g. librarians who should give references and documents to edit and could be in the meanwhile addresses too);
- to have specific sessions with all users, previously listed, directly in the main important places located in the four districts in which municipalities and GLAM institutions are actively collaborating;
- to improve edits for those monuments, villages and cities, to connect the edits with other Wikimedia projects training, such as the use of Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikivoyage;
- to use digitazation for special document to expose on Wikisource.
For those reasons we would like to plan:
- to have four or more edit sessions, at least one for each district, if possible;
- to develop the trainings during the summer and autumn seasons for the coast and for other districts during the winter and atumn seasons;
- to connect these sessions with local touristic and cultural events to promote both our Abruzzo Wiki Grand Tour projects and places and people involved too (artists, photographers, GLAM professionals, etc.);
- to organise wikigite and photographic visits to promote tourism and specific cultural events too.
With the edit sessions we would like to give grants and to host participants, at least to some students from the two last years of the high school and from universities classes together with GLAM or local institutions specialists. Those selected should apply formally declaring which entries they would work on and giving some further details on projects they would like to build with Wikimedia platforms, giving reasonable and agreed dealines for their further projects.
Marche
[edit]Digital Monuments of the Marche is a project to promote the territory which intends to involve all those interested in the digital dissemination of the local architectural and monumental heritage. We can involve three entities (two public libraries and a museum in the Marche), in the cities of Fano (where the organizer Tommaso Paiano works), Macerata and Fermo. A photographic (and / or multimedia) wikigita (wikitrip) and a writing session would be organized in each of the three cities. The three structures would make space, connection, computers and sources available to participants.
Specifically, the activities are:
- Photographic Wikigite (Commons)
- City Photo Contests (Wiki Loves Monuments)
- Training courses for teachers and Paths for transversal skills and orientation (school / work alternation)
- Mapping Party on Open Street Map
- Edit-a-thon
- Digitization of works in the public domain on Wikisource
- Creation of city guides on Wikivoyage
Molise
[edit]The project consists in promoting the meeting between activists, wikipedians, inhabitants of the territory and cultural experts in order to put cultural information online, especially regarding archaeological sites, museums and nature trails. In the Isernia area there is a national park and various and important archaeological sites including one of the oldest Paleolithic sites in Europe. In the Campobasso are there are two ancient roman town called Altilia and Larino and we want to work with already existing promoting association around those places. Methods: the project consist of a series of online meeting and editathon and some physical meeting before durind and at the end of the project. The choice to work mainly online is to reduce the financial impact and augment the productivity without forgetting the importance of the physical meeting to make stronger relation between the partecipants. About the specific score we will work on the following goals: a) Involve in our project the woman association and LGBT+ community that is already really active and sensible to the cultural activities in the Region with the specific objective to increase gender diversity in our projects After the project we want to produce a project proposal to who want to replicate it in their community B) We will involve local administrations, especially municipalities and service clubs to our project c) The scope is accomplishable in one year. The budget is realistic Some participant that will lead the group are experts and we will try to invite also not skilled high motivated interested people d) Every activity will be objectively evaluated during the execution of the project
Apulia
[edit]We plan to increase articles and article quality about cultural heritage here in Puglia with two different editathons, in pair with the local Wiki Loves Monuments contest, “Wiki Loves Puglia”. This coordinated project will consist also in some photowalks and a final exibithion, where we will sum up the work we did during the entire project. We’ll work together with local institutions and cultural organizations, like Municipality of Bari, the Metropolitan City of Bari, La Scuola Open Source, Associazione Cine_fotografica Kaleidos. The first editathon will be held during Wiki Loves Monuments Puglia, if the sanitary emergency conditions permits, or immediatly after, at a cultural centre location. We will work on Wiki Loves Puglia and local topics (local cultural heritage). The second editathon will be held at a local Apulian library, to have more reliable sources to use. Again, we’ll write about local monuments, cultural heritage and history. We’ll add sources and improve articles in Italian and in English (and presumibly other languages) about Apulia in general. We are planning also to organise a third editathon, this time about Technology, at a local technology hackerspace group, that will complete the editathon works here in Apulia for this year. The important point of our work is leaving in our participants quality Wikimedian competences in our participants. So, we’ll work to teach them how to use Wikitext and syntax, how to collaboratively edit and the basics of Wikimedia projects polices. The editathons, so, also have the purpose to serve as a real test of these abilities, that will be consolidated, contributing also to the free knowledge, relasing material on Wikimedia projects and working to improve their reliability, adding other sources. During the editathons, there’ll be also a “photoathon” moment, where participants will be able to upload their past photos on Commons, using the right licenses and tools. We’ll also work not only on content, but also on Categorization and organization (portals etc.). We won’t work only on Wikipedia: we plan also to work on Wikivoyage, other linguistic editions of Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and, if we get some texts to release, Wikisource and Wikiquote. We will also improve near zones on OpenStreetMap project (which is also a way to improve indirectly Wikimedia projects, because they actually rely on OpenStreetMap to show maps, see maps.wikimedia.org) This is also a work to improve relationships with GLAM institutions (libraries and cultural centres) and planning future work on Wikimedia projects and free knowledge. All the editathons will be held at the end of this sanitary emergency (or, in the very worst case, online), so we can’t give an actual date at the moment. We'll always work in pair with local associations and institutions, and we'll always work not only on Italian language projects, but also in other languages (for example, in Bari there's a big amount of Russian tourists because of Saint Nicolaus). At the end of Wiki Loves Puglia project, there will be a exhibition with the location offered by the Metropolitan City of Bari; during the inauguration of that showcase we will present the work we did during editathons.

- In Italy, especially in central and southern Italy, important historical documents can also be found in minor archives kept in parishes or local institutions. These documents can be a source of absolute value for writing pages on Wikipedia, thus sharing their content made free. The people who propose this activity all have great writing experiences on Wikipedia and satellite projects. The organization of Wiki-hackathon will surely involve other experts, local institutions and even ordinary citizens, bringing them closer to the culture of free content sharing, this is very important for the community to grow numerically in those areas of Italy. Particular attention was paid to optimizing costs in the organization of this initiative, which makes it easily replicable. Mattruffoni (talk) 05:45, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
